Crime and poverty in Sarasota is centered around the very northern edge of town, a long way from the downtown area so overall the majority of the town is very, very safe.

A real professional job that never becomes stuffy or boring. Incredible historical narration with video done like a native which he is not. The drone work at the end is the icing on the cake. I have never seen something as complete or unique as his livability score. It is appropriately geared to someone who is thinking of living there rather than just being a fun place. He is performing a great public service for any age group from young people who are devolping their career to retirees who have to balance resources with aspirations. So a disclaimer for me. I am a much much older midwesterner who likes my midwestern state but likes to get a bit more sun and warmth in the depths of winter too...guilty as charged!

@@jennascott6309sadly all of Florida is becoming very un affordable. I have lived here for 30 years an every year it becomes harder to get by here. If you have lots of money then no problem! If your not so well off some other southern state would be my choice now.if you want to rent its gonna cost you. If you want to buy a home its really gonna cost you now. 10 years ago my home might have been worth 40k. This year the taxable value was just under 200k. Everything here is crazy now.

I moved to Sarasota back in the early 90's as a college student. I needed the polar opposite of New Yorks hustle and grinde and my old professor informed me of his colleague heading up an animation department in a small private art school with great credentials. The brochure of the place showcasing the beach of siesta key said it all. I had many dreams and premonitions about the place, seemingly flying into this beautiful crescent shaped city. So many things that would indeed come to pass. That school would be the Ringling school of art and design. Now renamed Ringling College of Art and Design. And both the school and the city of Sarasota would be astounding. Back in the 90's the place was well off the nations radar. While most people routinely bashed and criticized Florida, such people were clearly clueless to the reality of what existed along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Known for retirees and the War generations, it was true that much of the old were living out their last, having made the place both beautiful and ironically affordable in most cases. You would not believe what you could buy into at that period in time. Think Santa Barbara for pennies on the dollar. Much of the older descendants were looking to leave the place for the big cities. As nice as Sarasota was it still was a sleepy town with little industry and job opportunities outside of medical. Eventually I lived on siesta key beach. Just a slip and a hop from its parking lot. And most condos were either empty or owned as short term rentals for seasonal travelers. Again Sarasota was old money. But you could readily see the trickle before the coming flood. Little by little, individuals who wished to vacation off the beaten path would end up in Sarasota, a transformative experience to say the least. You knew this was THE place! The place to get in early before others found out. Let them bash Florida in their ignorance, while I sip Pina coladas with my toes dipped in cool powder white sand beaches with little crowds and the best sunsets in all of the US. I loved the place, but those were my college years. Then came life in California, Burbank. And though work was lucrative and fun. I wasn't so impressed with cali. This is what people were on about!?. Really!? I get the money but the quality of life¿? Meh... And not so long after I found myself back in Florida, but this time the Tampa area. Clearwater Saint Petersburg to be exact, and once again here was a town that was special. More of a bustling city but also very sleepy. Lower middle class but also flanked with the same demographics as Sarasota. The three cities all sleepy and yet all on the cusp of coming change. Thankfully I got to live work and vastly enjoy these places as well for years. And when it came time to leave so did the masses began making their move in. And for what was so nice and affordable began to change. The very peoples that long scoffed at Florida were now making a bee line for it. How ironic. The complainers have ruined their states, sold and priced it's own people out. And here they come. I returned to NY but not the greedy city of no.. I went north. 45 minutes up to Wappingers falls. And like a repeating tune so this area was unique nice affordable and lower income, and like all the places I lived and left, the writing was on the wall even there. Soon those peoples leaving the big city will become aware of these Hudson valley river side townships. And see their laten value. Cold Springs, Beacon, Peekskill. And only took but a few years for new money to find it's way in. And poof. Here comes the Starbucks crowd. Prices skyrocket and what was affordable now becomes some equity firms asset portfolio. The town is transformed, looks great but so many are pushed out. Then comes the greed. So, this time I get off the mainland all together, to a Caribbean paradise. And all those places I had lived are now the very places so sought after. Places that were so nice and yet so humble. Then the newcomers come along with the very ideals and practices that forced them out of their homes only to setup shop in a new place only to make things worse. You said you didn't need nor want Florida, so why do you need it now? I do miss the crescent city. The one that revealed itself to be true from my dreams as I made my way back from Saint Armond circle across the bridge revealing its splendor. But the greater lesson is that all things change in time, and if by changes you come across a good thing, take advantage of it while you can, as opportunities as such don't happen everyday.

Sarasota is so tempting. In a few years, if I make it, I'll be on SSI with virtually no savings. So I have to look at the whole picture. Warm is nice. My legs are old, in bad shape, and the cold hurts. But I like to eat. A studio apartment is doable though a one bd rm is preferable. Lived in a studio in San Francisco 2005-10. Without huge student loans. a p/t job, and a food pantry it would have been impossible to live there. Even in 2010 the writing was on the wall and now you couldn't pay me to live there. Moving to a place knowing a food pantry is the only way to make it work? Not a good idea.
College towns have been a good value but that's changing as the opportunity for over inflated development is replacing shabby chic. I do have my eye on a casino town along the gulf. But casinos attract a different element than college towns. Affordable is not a deal if it's in a ghetto or infested with people servicing the darker elements that casinos attract.

My 1st x-wife (no surprise there) lives there now. She moved there in1986 and it was much more affordable. She was able to buy a home there after selling her home in Eastpointe (formerly East Detroit). Her new hubby is a real estate agent and they have done well. I spoke to her recently and she told me that prices jumped so much in the past 35 years that they don't think they could get a smaller house and afford it. Regarding the age of the residents; this is why restaurants close early and there isn't much to do for young people after 8pm. This is true in most of Florida. Also true, the driving in Florida is expensive and thrilling. Due to the high cost of insurance on anything, there are many uninsured motorists here. Kinda encourages hit and run drivers. Living in Florida? I admit that I'm not crazy about living in Florida. Too expensive, too hot/humid in summer. Too much traffic, hurricanes, too many bad drivers and too many people that just want to stay in their homes and not do anything more than drive around a little. I like a lot of places more than here including Michigan, Indiana and South Dakota but at age 70, I'm not thinking about moving again. Come visit if you like, the winters are great! Make sure to buy the insurance on the rental car!

Sarasota is an old and tired town. They have not kept up the area and worked on modernizing it. It is just old looking. Also, the traffic is absolutely horrible. Bumper to bumper all the time and it is worse than Tampa. It's governed by Liberals so now they are planning their "work force housing"building plans so the crime will get worse than it is. The population is elderly so they are not wanting it to change. Old is what they like. You couldn't pay me to live there.

My wife and I just took a great morning walk down at Marina Jack and then hit Pastry Art downtown for coffee. We were just saying, we sure as heck couldn’t dine at an outdoor cafe in seattle in January.
Truth be told, this is our primary residence, but we do leave town for summers and hurricane season. We immediately gained a large circle of friends, and find people to be 10X friendlier than those back in seattle.
