Excellent Episode, thanks for Posting, I had a crush on Michael Upton (Barry Evans) but I loved Paul Collier (George Layton),RIP Robin Nedwell and Barry Evans.
John Cleese wrote this episode and the character played by Timothy Bateson was based on the Torquay hotelier he met called Donald SInclair.Humphrey Barclay the producer of Doctors told Cleese he had a series in the making with this grumpy, disagreable hotelier , et voila - Fawlty Towers was born
doctor in the house series were about upton's student life, during medical school at st swithin teaching hospital, doctor at large was when he graduated and started practicing medicine as qualified doctor
Interesting. Although its humour wasn't based on the pyschosexual problems that Basil was having there were elements - apart of the actual hotelier and wife - that were included in the actual series of Fawlty Towers. The revenge on Roy Kinnear was like the revenge on the spoon salesman and there was even mention of a psychiatrist. We also mustn't forget the old ladies who became a feature of the main series (although played by different actresses). Cleese - through his writing - had a way of getting back at certain types he didn't like and that was clearly evident here.
Look at his face after his character's comeuppance. There's such pain in his eyes. He's so hurt that these people he'd thought had liked him, have suddenly turned on him, that he can't even move. There's something else in his eyes: An almost childlike look of confusion, as if he doesn't know how or why these people could be so cruel to him. This character had thought he was the life of the party; it had never occurred to him that he was being a jerk. I get the feeling his brashness was a mask to hide his crushing insecurity. He's really a tragic character. A great actor can convey all that, while just sitting there, not moving, and without saying a word.
Not quite. He got the idea for Basil from Donald Sinclair the owner of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay when the Monty Python team stayed there. He used this as a dry run.
Barry Evans said the days he acted in the Doctor series were the happiest times of his life .
Love his smile and acting. Just watched him in 2020. RIP Barry Evans.
@@simawar3166 yes RIP .so sad as to what happend to him .

I missed this series at the time, but there's so much of "Fawlty Towers" here - love it!
Uncle Leo was Neil’s dad in The Young Ones.
And also Neil’s dad in The Inbetweeners.
Yep. You can see alot of Fawlty Towers in this ep. :)
he is the teacher in "Mind your Language"!
Yeahh
Professori!
Masterji or even the bosh
Por Favor?!?
Duh
Such a good serie.
Brilliant
I was trying to think where I'd seen Timothy Bateson before....I remember now, he played the caretaker in the early series of GRANGE HILL!
Love you Barry ...
Love you ....
Fucking hell...can you imagine staying in that hotel..Roy kinnear constantly cracking jokes at you every second..you'd go nuts..
Because he's very nervous and he started writing MR. Upton instead of Dr. Upton. A bit of an over reaction. heh.

Roy Kinnear, a great comedian but also a good actor (e.g The Hill with Sean Connery).

@@OofusTwillip Love this analysis here spot on.Roy Kinnear was brilliant.
@@OofusTwillip Thats a hell of a bit of psychoanalysis, but you are probably onto something as John Cleese was into that at the time.

Well, that was dire.
That woman at 7:00 is wearing the same top as the woman serving in the canteen in Doctor in Charge, Shut up and Eat.
Is it just me who has noticed Barry Evans has a NL account eye
Whats that? NL account eye?
What is that fella??????
john cleese wrote this? no wonder the chaos :)
This is not the basis of faulty towers!
One of the episodes were through a real life Basel.
It is, John Cleese said so.
It is and it's so obvious.
John Cheese (Mr. Fawlty) got his idea for Forty Towers after writing this one
No it was through a real life Basil

About as silly as Fawlty Towers
LOl
Not feeling this one... annoying... I like Brit comedies but this one is irritating.
This is probably the worst episode of the series, nothing like the rest. Give some other eps a chance :)
If you're American than that does not surprise me one bit .
@@dariosmagata8481 Can't see that as it works really well and a good Fawlty Towers pro to type.
@@dariosmagata8481it's one of my favourites

Shite. Apart from Roy Kinnear.
