A new piece in The New York Times explores the man behind those moments, and finds plenty of reasons why Miller’s performative, trollish, and aggressively racist antics in high school and college had the GOP salivating after him.

@@LaoZi2023 ignorant about what? Julia is a rabid leftist who spits pseudo-intellectual twaddle for a living. She has an agenda towards Stephen Miller. She knows nothing about him.
@@kyleg8098 , she has an “agenda” toward Miller, because he spews right-wing ideology that designed to control liberals. The funny thing about conservatives, you don’t mind your side drudging up dirt, but when somebody from the left drudges the right’s dirt, all of a sudden they are propagandists. SHE IS A JOURNALIST! Do you not understand that? And in some cases, she actually calls out when Miller is correct.
Whatever it takes to get your through the day. To me, she is merely parroting the elitist lefty garbo that has been spewed for decades. Can *guarantee* she wouldn't be pro-immigration if she lived in Youngstown, Gary, or Lansing. Classic example of "hearing but not listening" and why Trump is our POTUS.
I want to share a story on this "Muslim ban" for anyone interested. I'm just a random white guy whose lived in both poverty and middle class/upper suburbs in mid-east US. Agnostic atheist if that matters. My high school was mostly white, but did have diversity. My brothers and I had friends from every religion including Islam. When Trump was running for president, one of his first shocking "policies" was a ban on Muslims traveling to the country. They later changed it to what Julia has described. This was the beginning of the division of my Facebook and most of the country. One of my friends posted something like, "Should we just allow Muslims into our country when they have done these terrorist acts?!" This happened to be the first girl I kissed at like 11 years old. I replied explaining that, yes we should allow them in because of the first amendment for one thing.. Freedom of religion.. And, that while religious radicalism can be dangerous, it's a very small minority compared to the many peaceful people in the Islamic community. It's also not limited to just Islam, and with her being a Christian, she should know the history of that. I know she must have been taught these things having gone to the same public schools which had teachers who didn't preach their own religious or political beliefs in class. How can so many people be ignorant, not just to the constitution, but to other cultures and the meaning of freedom? Then add on the fact that the primary presidential candidate is saying this so brazenly, and people are supporting this? After 4 years he still gets nearly half of the countries support? It's just shocking that we can all pretty much agree on things like for example, President Zelenskyy of Ukraine has shown himself to be a badass. Why can't we all agree that Trump is not someone who should have political power, and things like racism are not ok on many levels?
did you know 40% of muslims in the uk want sharia law. I read this but obviously its not something easy to prove/. Sharia law is basically what the Taliban is all about. IMHO \ personally I believe people should be held accountable for what they do and not what others do.
Haha a cerebral conversation, no where near exciting as a rambling Trump rally which you are clearly used to. This PBS expose' is for mature adults only...
Yea. Repubs don't seem too happy or relaxed, huh? Angry victims who blame everyone and insult others without any practical; measurable method of improving our everyday lives.
We have many racist in the USA. It's ashame because this entire country is made up of immigrants. Unless you are a native American Indian, YOUR ANCESTORS WERE ALL IMMIGRANTS. How dare these white supremacists think they belong here more than a black or brown individual.
Illustrating once again the capacity for one self-determined individual to infiltrate other's minds; and then coerce them to act based on their own belief system....
But words don't make my life better. Would it be better if his name was Proud Boy or Kyle Rittenhouse? Make my life better (and you can work on gun control too if you like) but do something other than blame others for your grifting
“American born worker” Once upon a time in America, we were call simply “Americans.” I guess I am just one of the global workers now. I have no country.
Not surprising that she begins with gross disingenuousness by referring to Republican positions as “anti-immigration” when they are exclusively anti-ILLEGAL immigration.
No, they don't do immigration or allow any immigration legislation -- you didn't notice? Then go out there and do the legislation or point to it. You'll see
One thing I have often thought about, but never gets covered in the press, is the responsibility of business owners that create demand for illegal immigrants. If they refused to hire anyone here illegally (and fine them if they did), I imagine the demand would go down. I have always thought that that people want to appear tough on illegal immigrants but also as many people are business owners, it is in their financial interest to keep them here. Any thoughts?
@@mikeearls126 The irony is that the Right wing promotes hyper capitalism at any cost. Consequences be damned! Whether it's the damage to the environment due to industrial interest, the grinding down of workers and the impeding of their rights to organize or the industrial level in which the Right wing promotes war via the military industrial complex. Why then are working class whites so shocked that the Right wing enables corporations to create an environment to utilize cheap immigrant & prison labor to undermine the prosperity of domestic workers? By using racism and ethnocentric talking points they get poor & working class White folk to vote against their interest. Many Hispanics, Africans, Asians and Middle Eastern immigrants would love nothing more then to assimilate into the American society. Yet, we ask them to forego their dignity to do so. Well, this is why Republicans will always meet resistance.
She studied Russian politics. It's the same. We have no ideals and no one can even debate the facts because Trump (like Putin) uses misinformation to get away with his grifts.
Funny how she describes anyone with views that differ than her own as being 'fringe right-wing' or 'extreme right-wing'. I guess that she has nothing good to say about conservatives at all.
tekteam26 she was clearly differentiating between conservatives and extreme right, that was the point of using the term. If you agree with stephen millers views you are NOT conservative you are extreme right
Actually, I don't even know what Steven Miller's views are. But I can tell from Julie Ioffe's comments that she is making absolutely no distinction between opposing ILLEGAL immigration which is what the vast majority of Trump supporters believe in and opposing ALL immigration and encouraging hate for all minorities which is the false narrative that the MSM keeps trying to push as being the Trump agenda.
tekteam26 she isn’t making the distinction because she knows Miller doesn’t make the distinction. He is racist. His view on immigration has much more to do with preserving “white culture” (whatever that is) than saving jobs. Trump is exactly the same. He has made it abundantly clear what he thinks about brown people. If you can’t see it you likely share the same views. The idea of preserving whiteness is racist
tekteam26 Stephen Miller is one of Trumps chief advisors on immigration. He is admittedly a Restrictionist when it comes to immigration, which by definition means he wants to restrict Immigration be it legal or illegal. Most everyone wants to stop illegal immigration, even liberals! But Miller has helped propagate the lie that liberals want open borders, when in actuality they want the illegals that are already here to have a path to citizenship, as they have lived in the US, some as asylum seekers, and have children and families in the US. Also, they are a big part of our economy, and contribute to society. You can’t just deport millions of people. Immigration reform is what the country needs and we were so close to getting it! It was a bipartisan bill supported by both Democrats and Republicans, but Stephen Miller was one of the chief saboteurs in getting it killed and stoking the xenophobic fire and frenzy and racial division surrounding the immigration issue in this country. I think you’re right that most Americans agree on the actual issue, but Stephen Miller doesn’t. He’s an extremist and he is still in the Whitehouse and has Trumps ear.
Missy P I like how you set people up with if you do this then you’re that. Typical leftist who sees the world as black and white and grey is racist or some phobia. There’s a lot of proof that people typically Mexican men who enter the country illegally are criminals. This was said at a time where the majority of illegals were single men many who are gangsters. The family units weren’t even on the radar at the time. People like you automatically label anyone against any immigration as racist regardless. I laugh at all the leftists who call blacks white supremacist just for having different opinions lmao. You people are completely out of your minds and dangerous to the country.
Very articulate interviewee , should a freestanding single person be an influence on a viewer, I'd say wait for another perhaps opposing view. Could be many faceted views.
There's no contempt. Just the truth and a lot of sorrow for out voters. Why not fact check Trump's misinformation and do your own research. It's all con man grift without measurable improvements for us 90%!. Stop with the hateful victim soap opera nonsense. I can turn on TV if I need entertainment! Give me evidence and legislation to make my life better. 80-90% of all voters (BOTH PARTIES) approved of BBB legislation but not one Republican voted in favor of it. Then blame shit on the Dems. In fact Repubs won't even vote on it unless forced. I don't need tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations. They don't need either. WE DO!!!

iT'S not about liking anyone . It's about doing your job and passing legislation that make their voters lives better. I can rant and rave and hate for myself (waste of time and energy though)

By proxy she’s familiar with the subject of the Doc. Also identity politics comes from the right as well. Isn’t the concern to keep America white and Christian an extreme form of identity politics?
She keeps referring to Breitbart, Coulter and Miller as “fringe”, but, when you watch the other interviews they make clear that these people are representing the views of the overwhelming majority of the Republican voters. It’s like she’s not in touch with reality.

I don't think "white people", as a race, rule over the minority populations in this country. That certainly may have been the case in certain parts of the country in the past, but, we're multiple generations beyond Jim Crow now. The concern is more about ideology than race.
IMHO \
