IF YOUR FONT WON'T EMBOSS - you are most likely using a custom font that is not a TrueType Font format (.TTF). Open Typeface fonts (.OTF) fonts don't work for emboss/deboss operations in Fusion 360 for some reason. You can still use your custom .OTF font by converting it to .TTF format, installing it on your system (replace the .OTF with the .TTF), and restarting Fusion 360. For Windows users, Installed fonts are in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder and can be located and converted to .TTF for free using one of many online converter websites. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing! More info is here: productdesignonline.com/tips-and-tricks/how-to-use-custom-fonts-in-fusion-360/
Thank you so much! I couldn't work out why the font I was trying to use wasn't working until I read your comment ❤
These videos have been great, 7 videos in and I've been able to do a fair bit of modeling on my own without issues. Thanks!
So glad to hear that - keep practicing... you can do it! :)
The emboss tool was not working for me initially, and it took some googling for me to figure out what was wrong. It would be good to mention that some fonts are finicky with the tool.
Thanks for sharing! Didn't realize the font would impact that. Which font(s) did you try?
@@ProductDesignOnline I had the exact issue. I used a font I had previously downloaded from Dafont and when I tried one that was preloaded onto my computer it resolved itself. Not sure where the discrepancy is but it worked nonetheless.
Same here, had chalkboard font and couldn’t figure out why I was getting errors. Switched fonts and it worked fine. Thanks for saving me some googling time!
I'm so glad you commented this! I was getting frustrated! I wish the alert text in fusion would've said that. I thought I did something wrong!
I spent an hour trying to figure out why I kept getting an error message when I tried to emboss. Thanks for your help
sheesh. that timeline thing u did there felt like timetravel movie shit..btw. great tutorials. really helpful. THANKS.
Thanks for watching! :)
Been away from Fusion for awhile glad to see there is a 2023 roll out, thank you Kevin.
Thank you Kevin for making these videos. They are helping me a lot on my RC hobby.
I gotta say man, these videos are awesome. I used AutoCAD 2010 in high school and really enjoyed it. Now that i have Fusion 360, its all starting to come back.
Really nice of you to do this seris.....Love it!!
Wake up babe, the new Product Design Online vid just dropped
🤣
Thanks a bunch! Love these videos!
Great series for beginners! Thanks😀
Wish you took the time to explain the purpose of every tool you used instead of just making us follow the steps but still a very helpful series overall, thank you
I try to explain each on throughout the series, but not in every single video (each time it's used) to keep the lessons shorter. Thanks!
Fantastic work. Splitting this course into short lessons is a great help.
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely brilliant series! Thank you! - Would love to see your approach to form modeling.
Thanks for the kind words! I do have some older videos on Form/Tsplines. Check out the playlist tab on my channel and you'll see them all in one place 😎
Thank you Kevin
Waiting on day 8 can’t wait
Got to here basically in day one, trying to understand how the tool works more. Will go back over it again but stuck on the constrain bit in 2:38 but ill go back over it again. thank you
When I Emboss the text on the hand grip, I select the lettering, then select the surface of the cylinder. It always projects the embossed letters to the back side of the grip rather that the front facing side of the grip cylinder. Thus the text is all backwards. I have redone the entire grip multiple times and same result. I'm going to try it with other shapes etc and see if I can determine why it doesnt project forward. I coiuld create the text backward and make it work out but something is off.
Perhaps the 'Flip' option in the dialog is to fix that?
@@jamiehooton6253 My Emboss Dialog box doesn't have a Flip Function. I'm using the free, not for production, version.
@@Johnnyo_alb Same issue, same non-existant button here
Thanks!!!!
Very cool
Cool 💯💯💯
This is awesome, subbed to you
Appreciate it 😊
Wow I’ve already completed a week of this course! Might need to review tho as it is alot for me to take in at 15 years old!
Thanks Kevin for sharing, what’s the best way to get Fusion 360 program for hobbyist while not putting hole in the pockets?
How do you edit the text at the end. I cant figure out a way to change the text now
I am at 3:25. Exact state. I selected text as the Sketch Profile and the cylinder for the face. Nothing happens. The Emboss window shows 1 selected for each option, Tangent Chain checked, Effect set to emboss, no other options appeared and OK button is greyed out.
Edit: It seems to have been a font issue. It won't work with Barlow or Barlow Black, but it did work with Consolas...
3:53 Same thing here, Flip options are missing.
Thank you for the videos! Just love it! Could someone help please? What is the easiest (correct) way to do left handle so that text is not "mirrored"? Or is there the way to change the text on mirrored clone (not changing the original text) so that it is in right direction?
I've been on this lesson for a long time now. I discovered that there's fonts that wont work with embossing lol
How do you auto hide the grid when in solid mode and show it again in sketch mode? Thanks for your videos, this is helping me a lot
Nice, are you updating the whole series? Good to See, a lot of the interface has changed. Ive done the old ones and still draw from the knowledge everytime i use Fusion!
That's the plan! Re-working each lesson from scratch given there are new features, wofklows, etc :)
@@ProductDesignOnline how long do you think till you have the full sereise? Been binging these and made every day already!
@@willpeeler8547 I can only release about 1 a week (typically available by Friday), as it takes me a a few days to product by the time I prep, script, record, edit. :)
Hi, thank you for the videos!!!
I have a begginer's question - sketch 3 in this video is not fully defined. does it matter? and why does it happen?
I'm moving on with you flawlessly. Sometimes I can't get enough about the logic behind, but they always get clearer in time.
How to make those letters removable? I wonder it now. For instance, the letter 'M' will have male end, cylinder will have a female. Letters will be snapped on and open to customization. Would be an eccentric feature! :))
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, I follow along exactly and when I select emboss the text comes out the other side of the cylinder...there must be a settings issue???? 😑
I could not get the final grip ring to be flush with the internal edge. I redid the entire thing and still had this happen. I notice you didn't say that you selected the inner surface along with the offset profile, although you did do it onscreen. I selected both and this fixed it.
Loving this series! One thing I'm wondering is if/how I'll retain all of this information, i.e. remembering to use intersect>coincidental to define corner parameters etc. has anyone gone through this course and been able to use what they have learned here to navigate their future CAD endeavors? thx!
There have been many folks who have! Even a handful that have started some successful Businesses selling their creations on Etsy, etc. Lots of 3D printed items and some who ended up doing CAM/CNC projects.
Happy learning! 🙏🏼😁
Thanks for that reply@@ProductDesignOnline, awesome and encouraging to hear that. Gonna get through all these videos for sur! Would you recommend taking notes as we progress?
@@MrEatsChildren really depends on the person. The most common process I've seen folks share is watching each lesson once, then followed by a second time as they follow along step by step. That tends to help ppl retain info and know what to expect next 😊
I didn’t have the flip box. I had to move the entire cylinder over until it allowed me to emboss it properly.
Nice!.
Thanks a lot for all your videos which are very helpful for me. I have only one question what does project command do? why do we need it?
I discuss it more throughout the course. In short, it helps you reference existing geometry, making the model adaptable should you change dimensions later.
Thanks for the amazing tutorials
I was wondering how to get all the sketch lines off my models. They do not look solid like yours when complete. Thanks
At the bottom on the display settings, visual style, shaded! :)
In closing the video, I wanted to go the extra step of making the left handlebar grip but have a question:
First I selected offset plane of 50mm just to give some spacing, then mirror the body of the right grip to the left, creating now two grips. The only problem is the text is inverted and I don't want the editing of one to change the other. Thoughts?
Great videos! Thank you...
Maybe make a copy of file and rename it. Then you can just swap ends on the hollow command and the last extrusion, right?
I can not seem to project the circle at the end of your video.
Everything else seems fine, but when I project, i still get 2 seperat rings to extract.
What am I doing wrong.
takes a while to learn if youre used to maya but i feel like i could realy use this irl as it is actual cad software and not just a 3d modeler.
I cant manage to combine all the bodies at the end, i can go through with the combine command and it shows on the timeline but there are still all the bodies in the bodies folder?
Can anyone help me? I don't know where I'm going wrong. I have done this lesson from start to finish twice now to ensure I'm not going wrong anywhere. On the last section when it comes to applying different materials and colours to different faces I select the lettering just as it shows in the video holding shift. I then drag the desired colour to within the lettering but every time I try it changes the colour of the entire object as opposed to just the lettering and I cannot work out why. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks
I find an error that had me crazy. Around 2:21 you say INTERSECT command, and I do not know if its a new version I have, but it did the same as in the class when I use the PROJECT command. Any way its a great class
4:50 I don;t think we have adjusted them. Thank you for the very good and informative video!
I guess by using measurement tool, and input the desired length
flip option is missing for me in emboss
❤
Can you use the emboss command on a dome?
There are some limitations. If it's a perfect dome you can get it to work. Any irregular curves will not allow Emboss at this time.
The text/emboss feature was kind of cumbersome. Took like 3 different text types until it worked. After the whole grip was complete it got me wondering how I would model the diamond pattern on this cylinder like the bottom of a pair of Vans (or Vans MC grips)
I notice that at 8:35, Sketch 3 does not have the red lock to indicate that it is fully constrained. I can't find anything to further define it. What is missing?
I had some puzzling issues when trying to Sweep the rings at the 6:27 mark. My First problem was I was succesfully highlighting the end faces of the first two rings on the left but when trying to do the same with the next two on the right the Dialog would should them selected as i clicked them but they wouldn't highlight regardless of my repeated attempts. When setting the 'Operation' to New Body as directed I was returned to the model without the changes. looking back at Kevin's actions it seemed he first set it to 'Join' before 'New body' I did the same and it seems to have worked but don't know yet until I discover later errors?
Thank you, I was wondering why it didn't make a new body. what a weird bug
@3:50 the current version I'm using has no Flip Normal option in the dialog box, but otherwise so far so good.
Can i use the test tool to add Copyright and Company Name to the bottom of a part. Store that as SVG and reuse it on every part???
If you used Fusion 360's native text tool, instead of an SVG, then you would want to reusbe a 'Component' for each part. You could then simply edit the text and change the part name/number as needed. SVGs are not ideal as you have to 'Explode' the text before you can work with them, and once you do that you can no longer (easily) change the placement. :)
In order to do the offset circle for the last ring, why do you have to project the inner profile?
Projecting will make sure it always updates if you were to change the dimension in the original sketch.
When you created the first grip extrusion for patterning, you said to do a new body to make patterning easier. Couldn't you have done a join and then patterned the feature instead of the body?
No, it will create pattern of the whole body including the cylinder
Thanks a lot for these videos. It isn't clear to me what the Project tool is for though. I tried it, and I was able to make an offset circle off the inner circle by just selecting the inner circle. What does Project get us there and what should I be sure to use it for in the future?
Thanks for the feedback/question! Project will take the existing geometry and 'project' it into the active sketch so it can be referenced. The reason this is so important is so that geometry automatically adopts whenever you change dimensions/sizes later on.

Why i can't embose the Text? Itu says 'sketch Profile create a self interesting body. Adjust depth of EMBOSS or size of Sketch Profile.'
Is it possible to put numbers around a compass rose such as degree numbers at each degree tic?
You could! Though, you would likely need to use a new text feature for each number to get the exact spacing.
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks for the reply I appreciate all you do I've learned a lot from your videos.
When doing the embossing I select the Text and then click on the face of the cylinder and I get an error Sketch profiles create a self-intersecting body. Adjust depth of emboss or size of sketch profile. OK this is why this software is so frustrating. The answer was to switch to a different font. I chose Arial and the problem resolved itself.
I'm getting the same error and have no idea how to fix it.
Hello, this is great! The only provlem for me is that I have a shitty PC and I'll have to buy a new one, which I currently can't do. My PC can't handle the shell command. I'll return once I'll get a new PC. Thank you!
mine was facing the wrong way until i started over, but i noticed my emboss tool didnt have a flip normal. anyone know why?
hi i dont understand why you used sweep?
Is it possible to go back on the timeline and edit the text?
Yep! Double-click on your sketch (that has the text), then double-click on the text itself (or right-click > edit sketch).
I would like to join into the number of people who are confused why their emboss text is coming out the backside reversed. Help appreciated
Ik it’s been a long time sense u posted this comment, but when getting the thickness of the emboss, try to put a negative sign infront
I can’t flip the emboss. It won’t show the box to flip it
not sure if its because i'm on the trial version or because of an update at some point since this video was released, but I cannot find the "intersect" command.
I found it- It was hiding in the sketch function, I had already finished the text sketch.
Sketch is not fully defined. I tried remaking and following the tutorial. Yours gets fully defined the moment you click on the tool but mine doesn't. Any help?
Fixed it, thanks.
@@siddhantrander4536How did you fix it? I am having that issue, but when I try to add constraints it tells me it is over constrained.
at 8:20 the Project command magically appeared! is there a keyboard shortcut for that?
Shortcut letter "P". You can also use "S" and search for Project (or other features).
@2:43, I had troubles to get it fully defined, as you just breezed by it with a casual mention. Some how, I did undo and followed along again until it worked with no real explanation of the problem. Absolutely frightening.
Same thing happened in the previous lesson with the previous lesson, selecting the point to revolve the triangle around in a circular motion. Help from the comments pointed out that the view had to be left straight on. No explanation why again.
I can't wait to start developing things on my own and running into this nonsense. It is not inspiring confidence.
as I can see the edges that someone help me please
How do I edit my Text after i clicked Ok? Because when sweeping the ends of the grips, it goes over my lettering.
Figured it out.
For anyone else, you can edit the sketch > right-click on the text itself > "Edit Text" from the right-click menu. Cheers!
@@ProductDesignOnline First: This is GREAT! But I too wanted to change the width of the text for the same reason. In the Browser, I right-clicked on the Sketch called 'embossed text' (not the one called 'cylinder'). This gives me a RIGHT view of the sketch that shows my text. I also get a SKETCH PALETTE window. When I right-click on the sketch (in the text OR background), I get a right-click menu - but without any 'Edit Text' item. I'm on a MacBook Sonoma 14.2.1. Fusion is up-to-date and I'm in a Trial.
OK, got it. In the Browser, I showed only the Sketch called 'embossed text'. THEN, I right-clicked on that sketch and 'Edit Sketch'. I got a RIGHT view of the sketch and a 'SKETCH PALETTE' window. NOW, when I right-click on the sketch, I get a menu with 'Edit Text' and choosing it gives me the 'EDIT TEXT' window. Yay! Thanks again!
followed your directions on this one, and it didn't work, when I went to emboss it, it sent an error code Error: Sketch profiles create a self-intersecting body. Adjust depth of emboss or size of sketch profile. and from lookin in the comments it was the font!!
I don't understand the need to project, what does it do?
Project command will include (project) existing edges so we can reference them without sketching them again. The advantage is that your model will automatically update if you change the original sketch (source), helping keep your models more parametric.
I have a lesson specific to Project on the channel that may be helpful 😎
what does project command really do? I don't understand. Playing around with the command on my own on random sketches, dont get the purpose
Project allows you to reference existing edges of your 3D bodies instead of punching in the same dimensions. As a result, it makes it easy to update your models without having to go back and manually update sketches.
Projected geometry "drives" the sketch from where it was inherited/projected.
Hope that helps!
Hi, I had a problem with shell command when I was doing. All the time I tried to use shell command, the program didn't respond, got frozen and threw me out. I tried it several times with different inside thicknesses but the result was the same. Why does this happen?
Make sure at 5:15 your ridges are set to 'new body'. I'm guessing yours joined the rest of the cylinder. There wouldn't be enough thickness there to Shell, resulting in an error.
I checked it out, I choose the new body as well but nothing changed. Program again got frozen.
So sorry, I got what I have done. Thx for helping.
@@cagolisano5551 Can you share link to your file or a screen recording? Something doesn't sound right. :)
@@ProductDesignOnline There is no problem anymore. I just got my mistake. Thanks for helping.
I am completely lost on this video as many times I have had to search for why things just aren't working! Now, for some reason I cannot seem to colour the text! Every time I went to fix the problem nothing changed. Checked other videos and they all said the same thing as here. I even deleted the file and started from the beginning, yet when I got to colouring the grip then the letters, nothing changed. So is it my computer or is it Fusion 360?
I would need to see your Fusion 360 file or a screencast video to see what's going on. Generally, as long as the letters are select before trying to drag the appearance over, it should work as expected. Without any more details, I'm afraid I can't help troubleshoot. You can always share your file here: community.productdesignonline.com/
I've had the same issue with selecting the letter faces. I found that pre-selecting the letter faces works better when zoomed in closer so that you can definitively put the cursor only on the letter face. The shift selection seemed to prefer edges to faces.
@@ProductDesignOnline My free trial has ended, and was not going to purchase F360 until I upgraded my 6 year old computer. So when I get my computer upgraded I will come back and try this video again. Maybe my whole problem is that my computer is just too slow for today's F360?

You keep talking about how important constrained sketches are, but your (and my) sketch 3 is not constrained, but the model is completed. What implications does this have?
As with all things in fusion, it all depends on your design intent. If you plan to make truly parametric files, then you should always fully define every sketch. If you need to do it quick design mockup, such as this, then it's not a big deal. You would still be able to update the core details but would need to manually update the rest.
Whenever I try to emboss, it embosses out the back side of the cylinder, so that the text is on the wrong side and also backwards. How do I fix this? I don't have 'flip normal' in my options.
Not sure why they removed 'flip'. Checking on my end, the Emboss still goes to the front. Would you be able to export your .f3d file, upload it to a sharing site (DropBox, Drive, etc) and share the link?

@@ProductDesignOnline I did manage to get mine finished, but i can send you a screen shot of the missing feature if youd like? ive noticed in todays version (at least the one i have) theres several little nuances missing that i have to take an extra step to get the same thing. do you have a contact i can send it to?
@@drdjr8 ah, no need for the screenshot. I've verified the flip is gone in all versions (of course, no notification or reasoning from Autodesk). I was more curious in your file if you were still having issues as I couldn't reproduce it embossing to the back side on my end. Thanks!!
I'm not sure what I did there either, but after backing up and redoing it it worked the way I wanted. There's little features here and there in these videos that are just gone. Makes for some fun trying to find a workaround! Would be cool to see some of these videos re-approached with these updates. Thanks so much for putting the time in for these videos!
There are some things I'm not sure I understand, like what project actually does, ect. A lot of these are like "use project" and idk what it does or what I'd use it for I just know that's what we use here (if that makes sense)
Nice and clear, I like your style and enjoy your videos but I have two problems with this tutorial. First, handle grips are molded and your text has undercuts. Look at 4:25 and you can see that the parts would not release from the molds.
Second, it's not your fault but Fusion 360 has only rudimentary text tools and many professional graphics people would not be happy with the stock kerning you show. "Character spacing" is too general and wont fix loose or tight pairs. At this point you are forced to use a tool with better text handling like Illustrator and import the text as line work which is a pain, You can "Explode" the text when editing the sketch but this is extremely crude for anything more than a couple of characters as you are nudging without any feedback and can easily add errors.
I agree, Brian. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll be adding proper kerning or other text updates anytime soon. It was 'big' win when the text tool got this overhaul, as previously you couldn't change anything with text.
I still dont quite understand project or when to use it.
Not to fear, it will be a more in-depth topic in later lessons in the course.
@@ProductDesignOnline I think I'm getting it. It seems like it's Ray casting geometry points on a 2d plane so they can be referenced in a sketch, right?
Going back in time line to make it work? This shit is 4D modeling.
Menh you added a strike to my channel
Loved all his other tutorials, yet all I can say about this one is its absolute garbage. I've never struggled with a 3d software before this video, half the time when I do something the 3d model doesn't follow the same path as his. Personally this video is going to be skipped and forgotten about!
What was your issue?
