I love the mindset that exploratory time is not wasted time! I recently interviewed for a job that I did not get, but I’m proud of myself for putting myself out there and seeing what new work environments are possible. The relentless productivity grind that demands you always have a “positive” Result and Data at the end of an experience in order for it to be worthwhile takes soooo much fun and play out of the experiences we otherwise love.
I love seeing how you navigate this new and unknown phase. It’s so reassuring, and it helps to see what doesn’t work and how that’s so important to figure out.
Regarding Coursera: Something that you can do (and that I did with two other Google certificates) is auditing the courses for free. You can read and watch all of the material absolutely free of charge, the only thing you can't do is the final assignments/quizzes. I went through the courses in my own time, and when I was finished I took the 7 day free trial and submitted the assignments and did the quizzes, and voila, certificate done, lol. Doing the courses also definitely did not take me as long as they say, I finished the whole thing in a few weeks max. I did find the courses really informative and well done, but you're definitely right when you say that you already have a lot of the skills anyway - that's way more important than some certificate! 💖
Hey Hannah! I'm a project manager for UK Gov and I got the APM project management qualification. They do it in a week intensive course online with an exam at the end. Alternatively PRINCE2 is another internationally recognised PM qualification where courses are run in the UK. So there are plenty of options you could go for if you want that certificate at some point!
i feel like PRINCE2 is more international project management with a focus on grant sponsored projects. I used to work for the UN and they used the PRINCE language a lot. I'd rather recommend PMI to APM especially for someone who already comes with Project Management experience like Hannah =) But both are great in my opinion.
I just started a new job that is a huge career change. Moving from the arts to politics and I feel so lost. I’ve spent the whole first week crying at the end of each day, and sometimes even during. It’s so reassuring to see any kind of shift of career is full of ups and downs, thanks for sharing ❤
I'm watching this immediately after a job interview which if successful would allow me to pivot into a new career, and I completely relate with the combination of mild terror but high excitement!
You are currently my favorite UA-camr and I get so excited every time you post, even if it's a short and I used to ignore shorts altogether. xp I'm glad you are enjoying this stage of life/career, it's really fun to watch as well. 😊
I recently quit my job as I want to pivot into freelancing using my research skills and PhD. I've decided I'm going to 'cosplay' a career for several weeks at a time and see how it goes! Interesting to see you do something similar (but with more of an idea of what you want to do lol)
In my first role pivoting from marketing/content soft project management to a full project management role in the digital space. You've got this! PM'ing is hard but so rewarding :)
Aaah I just can’t reiterate enough how much I love your new videos & following your exploration and career journey and everything. It makes me feel soo soo happy and excited and connected to you. I’m so grateful for everything you share with us. It’s so so beautiful!
I loved this. I love to see you figure stuff out and attack things with a plan - but also adjust the plan as you learn what you want and don’t want. It’s so useful for me to SEE that. I always struggle with work when new things pop up and I have to pivot.
Hannnnaahhhhh! I just want to echo what I've seen from other comments about how affirming it is to see you in this figuring-it-out phase. I started a business as a freelance Virtual Assistant two years ago and had NO idea what I was doing... and then last year a lot of my time was spent trying to figure out how to narrow down my services into something more specific (I decided to become an Online Business Manager, which is heavy on the organization and project management -- go figure, considering this has been one of my favorite YT channels since you started it years ago bahaha), but that unknown phase of trying to figure out what elicits that "buzzing" feeling you described about 5 mins in was so full of analysis paralysis and "am I making the right choice?!" panic.... so I just want to say that you're so not alone in that liminal space and I appreciate you sharing it! Excited to see all that this next career phase holds for you
@@morehannah On a short term basis it's helping streamline a business's operations (setting up automations, standard operating procedures, sales funnels, etc.) and then in the long-term it's project management, running launches, working on strategy with the CEO, being a filter between the CEO and the rest of the team to help delegation, etc.!
I'm watching this at work in the background and my boss looked at the title like 👀👀 haha. Also I can't believe i didn't notice Rowan filmed some of their videos in your office! Love the crossover
For whatever it’s worth, I’m currently taking that coursera course, and their time estimates are wayyyy generous. The 50 minute end-of-module assignments (which are basically 10 question quizzes) take me 10 minutes. The “20 minute” readings take 10, including taking some notes. I watch the videos at double speed (but then pause occasionally to take notes). I’m up to module 3 of the second course in the series, and so far everything on average takes less than half of their estimated time. Obviously still totally legit if it’s not the right thing for you right now (or ever), but thought I’d mention about the time estimates in case it’s helpful to you or anyone else who might read this comment.
I've done Google's Project Management course and the whole first part of this video I was thinking "I don't think this will be helpful to Hannah" - it's very corporate focused and has fewer takeaways for social media/media work. So I was very glad when I saw you put it to the side :)
Thank you for sharing how things are going as you exoloire this new career! I'm in a career crossroads myself, and you motivated me to reach out to a career coach to figure things out. Thank you, Hannah! I'm looking forward to sit down and make some decisions based on what I want to do and what I'm passionate about, which is exciting even if a bit terrifying. Also! If you're ever interested again in taking a project management course, I've been doing one through LinkedIn Learning which has been good so far and you can get a certificate at the end.
About the Google coursera courses... I completed the digital marketing course and I absolutely did not take the time they suggested. I completed the quizzes in 10 minutes max and the time they recommend for reading is too much. I was able to complete each "week" in one morning
about the project management courses: they mostly qualify you to work with one specific software and thus "management style". most of these are globally used to manage large teams in conventional entreprise contexts and are, in my opinion, much less universal, transferable skills than what "project management" as a skill sounds like at first. for smaller teams/coworking or other settings than corporate business, I find it more viable to develop own structures and systems (which you evidently are an expert in already hehe 😊)
This has nothing to do with the main theme of the video (which I loved and am looking forward to sequels of) but seeing your wordle opener be "rowan" just melted my heart, that is so cuuuute 😭💖
28:50 I feel like this is the positive side of lifestyle content creating, yes? Your followers are invested in your posts life wise and you are truly excited because it's your life!
Loving this content! So nice to have a look behind the scenes and see how and what you are exploring. Might be even more fun to me since I'm at my first month at a new job. So thinking about similar things: where do I wanna focus on and where lies my expertise, but also the practical stuff like planning some free time at the last working day of the week. Feel like an exciting phase to me of figuring out the structure and building onto something.
Looking forward to watching this video. As someone who is in a similar position of trying to make my freelance job more concrete it'll be interesting to see how you go about it
As someone who is currently considering a career pivot and who is also currently feeling a bit lost/overwhelmed, this is v reassuring to watch and know that I'm not the only one
This is awesome getting the behind the scenes look. I’m finding myself getting excited when you get excited about the business ideas and almost brainstorming along with you!
Just wanted to say i loved this BTS vlog:) I’m currently in a bit of a career crisis so it’s super helpful to see how you are setting up your exploration phase with some kind of structure. Hope there’ll be more of them! xx
Loveddd this video and hearing you think through exploration of ideas! Your mention of being able to enjoy the time to play around with things when you remove the pressure for it to be “perfect” quickly or immediately really resonated with me. I’m finishing my PhD thesis and have def been dipping in and out of the “rush for results” mindset so I heavily feel that diff in having fun vs creating anxiety 😅
I am currently thinking of doing a sort of sideways career jump because I've found something in the job I have at the moment that gives me that excited feeling. So watching you figure it all out is probably going to be very helpful! Also thanks for the shout-out :P I am available for all baby naming needs.
I did a professional training in management & you *really* do not need it for handling 1-person businesses (esp. as a highly organized person). You need a couple books as reference to read when you see a difficulty. Just leave them next to the loo :)
🎉One idea: If you do create a worksheet of some kind, it’s a great lead builder! You can start with just one freebie worksheet that people can get when they sign up for your email list on your website :) Then you nurture that list to invite people to book a coaching/guide call with you!
fyi quickest way to get a project management certificate is to do a PMI foundations course, they do like week long intense courses, might be more expensive than Coursera but at least its only a one time fee, and then you do one or two exams depending on what level you chose :)
Love this video and journey! I did a non-accredited project management course through the local university's Lifelong Learning Centre - twas about £150 and 10 evenings with assignments - there are other options if you do still want to do the theory stuff at some point.
This is interesting. Would love to hear if you ever work with authors! I've considered Patreon but am unsure what sort of content I'd be able to do, especially as my books are contracted so I can't share WIPs and things like that.
I think you can audit Coursera courses for free, so you don't get feedback on your tasks and you don't get a certificate, but you can watch the contents. If that's an option on that pm course, that could be more like what you are looking for :)
I'm sure this is something you've already thought about but have you considered (probably a few years down the line) creating your own course or guide on how to have a Patreon? I think that could be a really helpful resource for people that may not be able to afford a one on one deep dive sessions with you into their individual Patreon and it could be a good source of passive income!
I love watching this, as I have gone through a similar transition recently and still am still figuring out things for myself. Also regarding project management - there are so many trainings for that out there, and they are not all so intense. Maybe look into PMI?
Also- agile versus waterfall method of Project Management would be an interesting concept for you i think... but you dont need to do a whole course about them. Just find some good youtube videos about them =) That alone would give you a better concept of Project Management in a way that wouldn't be a waste of time, but more a helpful info =)
Might be interesting to consider: you have developed strategies and tools that were helpful and fitted specifically to you and how your brain works, how will you help people learn to work in a way that is helpful to them personally? (Instead of teaching what you learned that works for you)
Okay but I was watching rowan ellis's video the other day about lesbian cheerleaders and was full on confused why hannah's bookshelves were behind lol, so glad to have the crossover confirmed lol
I've been a project manager for years, and honestly the PM certificates and degrees are complete BS. Unless you were trying to get a job with a tech company, where they might ask for those certifications, they really won't matter nearly as much as actual demonstrable experience managing projects similar to the ones you're offering services to manage. Even for those jobs, they often ask for PM certifications OR X years experience. Genuinely, having the lived experience with actual day-to-day project management is way way more useful for you and impactful for whoever you're working fo.
