  • So my first ever Kiln opening. So pleased it went so well. The Test tiles are a brilliant way to find new combinations for my bigger pieces.

    I died and went to heaven with this kiln opening. Would have loved to see your husbands reaction when he came home to those masterpieces.

    I like the shape of your test tiles. Would you consider doing a video on how you make your test tiles?
    Love your video

    Congrats! Your Glazer combinations are fantastic. I am not a native english speaker and could not understand the name of the glaze you used with oatmeal 7 min. Can you help me?

    Thank you for sharing all these combos. That last vase was jaw dropping!! Did you say what cone you fire to?

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  3 роки тому +1

      I fire to cone 6 medium. I was trying a 10 minute hold and recently I just stopped that as it pushed it to a 7. Trying to get a balance. I refuted recently to a cone 5. Some glazes like vintage gold bubble if too hot but copper needs hotter.

    Fantastic pieces Lois. Love the colour of the Ancient Copper on that last piece. Do you have a price list or website of your work?

    I was curious on the last one you used ancient copper and textured turquoise. Did you do the whole piece in ancient copper then top in textured then oatmeal on the rim? Been working with this and wasn’t sure how you applied it. On your bowl with obsidian Smokey and oatmeal did you do the obsidian first x3 full bowl, then Smokey x 3 and then oatmeal just on the rim or over the other two also?

      Hi. Ancient copper and Textured Turquise will be separate but Ans over lap of an amount. Whether AC over TT or the other way round will give a different finish. Usually then a line think of oat meal above the overlap and the run will then come down etc.
      Obsidian x3 first. Smokey Merlot 2 to 3 but thicker at the rim. The. Oatmeal very think at the rim. Over the other two.

      Thank you kindly, I have to ask because I can’t hear well. I love how you experiment.

    Lovely, did you dip or brush? How many coats?

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  3 роки тому

      All my glazes at the moment at home at brush on and I typically do a x3 base coat but layering changes as I design the glaze. So may be 1, 2 or 3

    So are you using the oatmeal to get the other colors to run? It is under or over the other glazes?

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Brad. I’ve only used Oatmeal over glazes not under.

    Hi, I was wondering about the glazes you used on the inside of the bowl at 7:04. I have been trying to get an effect like that.

      If you do three coats of iron lustre then a thick coat all over with oatmeal you will get this reaction. Looking at the rim I had oatmeal thicker so it turned pinks. And blue.
      I have also played with iron lustre x3. Either smokey merlot x2 or Blue Rutile x 2 and then the oat meal and that causes wonderful colours as well. I will find a video of another mug and let you know when that is so you can see other options.

      If you look at video 8. And go to 11.05 you will see a mug with more info.

      @@LoisHook That was quick! Great! Thanks for your answer. I have a number of Amaco PC glazes but not those particular ones. Will definitely have to get them. I have a small bowl at home that I bought at a pottery in France, which looks very much like that and I have tried to recreate the look but haven't gotten close yet. So thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction.

      I know this was filmed ages ago but what white were you layering blue rutile and ancient copper? Was it PC Snow by any chance?

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  Рік тому +2

      Hi. I’ve just gone back to watch. Always interesting to be reminded. Yes I only use Amaco PC Snow for white.

    How do you know what is what without marking the tiles before firing? I would be in a muddle.

      All the tiles were numbered and I have it all written down.

    Lois...is there a video with the details of these test tiles?

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  3 роки тому +1

      Yes go to video 23. It’s all there.

    • @kiddywriter
      @kiddywriter 3 роки тому

      Lois Hook Pottery Mmmm...I don’t see them in that video. The test tiles from this video you put white as base with various glazes and then reversed and put white over the same glazes. In video 23... you used ancient jasper and oatmeal on various colors.

    • @LoisHook
      @LoisHook  3 роки тому +2

      Sorry my mistake. That was the first lot of test tiles which which was video 3. The videos have all been done in order of number.

      Lois Hook Pottery Yes..that’s the video I saw them. You mentioned that you may do a separate video with the details of the glazes on those tiles. I saw a few I really loved and wanted to try them on some pots of mine. The reason I was asking.😉
