DIY Wooden Punching Bag Stand

- My son and I bought Sara a punching bag for mother's day one year, as she took a boxing class years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hung it from the rafter, but it just shook the whole house, so this was my 1st attempt at making a stand. I used wood I had on hand, except for the 8 foot 4x4 that I purchased specifically for this build.
It's not perfect, so I need to stabilize it a little better, but I think I can do that pretty easily. Please note, that I haven't put this through the test to see if I really works and last, so if you build this, build it at your own risk....sorry, I felt I needed to say that.

Looks great. My suggestion would be put down some construction paper or old tarp and pour concrete in the triangle voids in the base to add weight to help keep it from rocking/walking.

Just buy some sandbags and place them over the "feet" of the mount. Should help and they will give enough to keep it more stable and absorb the force rather than clatter around like weights.
I would add an additional brace at the bottom of that vertical. Quite a bit of moment generated to be handled by screws so close together. Also stack up some sandbags to weigh down the whole assembly.

Hanging the bag on the spring helps a lot against vibrations. I'm not sure how sturdy the connection is between the base and the pole but you gave me some inspiration. You aspire me to make a stand :)
Awesome, good luck! I keep talking about it, but haven't done it yet. I want to put the same triangle brace on the bottom as I did on the top. I think that will help quite a bit. Perhaps the spring you suggest too. Thanks!

You're welcome Kai! What I didn't do in the video is, I added a diagonal 4x4 on the bottom with 2 triangle plywood pieces sandwiching it together, just like the top. Make sense? Good luck!

Good luck! I have weighted the bottom with a couple bags of concrete. If you have big Olympic weights, try putting a dowel on the ends of the "feet" and throw your weights there.👍

You got it! I can imagine it shaking the house pretty good. Good luck with it. I would add a triangle bracing on the bottom like I did the top. It stabilizes it way better....oh yeah, like the comments say, add weight to the bottom.

I planned on just putting it in the ground with some concrete too, except I was gonna use a 6x6 as the upright, and make the hanging piece and support out of a 4x4. I don't mind if it doesn't look pretty, shits gonna work 🤣
That should totally work. Especially if it's pressure treated.
Great design and great video walking through your process! I built this yesterday with similar upright dimensions but wider rear brace and longer side supports at 45 degrees, with a 2x4 bracing across the font of the base (from angle tip to angle tip, anchored on the center supports). With some extra weight to keep it stable, it survived the first work out with ease. Planning to brace the upright post a little more once I figure out how best to do so, but your work was a great inspiration to get started!

I guess most people to him are smaller but he will always be punching in a downward angle which will make it move more. I’m 6’2 and I would need it at 8 1/2 feet or so, depending on the bag.

This is dope, can't go to boxing gym with the situation and so this inspire me to build my own, i do think maybe you need to add more weight to the base of the stand to make things stable or permanently clamp it down with brackets where you're going to set it up

I was looking for something like this. Great work, thanks! Maybe a brace from the back of the vertical down to the cross pieces might not keep it from moving but would add additional stability.

Looks good! I think if you add three 2x4s itll add alot of stability! one in the middle horizontally and then two that are vertical connected to the feet! Im going to try and recreate this with some variations to see how it comes out
That would be great. Let me know how it turns out! I'm thinking of putting a 4x4 at an angle on the back at the bottom of the long 4x4 and maybe stabilize it with a couple of plywood triangles like the top.

Some suggestions for making it move less: add some sandbags or some other heavy weight to the back/legs of the stand, and add a second caribeaner and a heavy bag spring to the hanging system. A lot of commercial bag stands have places to put weight plates, and the spring would help reduce some vibrations from your hits
I was going to comment same thing regarding sand bags. I'd consider some kind of angled brace at the bottom back as well
That's a good call, Jeff. I did end up putting the same angle piece on the bottom as I did on the top, shortly after. And I have concrete bags on the base. Maybe I should do a follow-up video. Thanks for the comment!

The factory built metal stands have bars on base to add weights that prevent the stand from moving around. Sand bags would also probably work well.
I've got a couple of bags of concrete on it now. That's working....ha ha ha, thanks for the tip.
I'm going to build one similar except I'm putting mine out side and going to put the 4x4 into the ground and concrete around it.

Add another angle support from the rear bottom and put 3 buckets of concrete on the platform so it doesn't move

You could put three small pegs sticking up from the base one on each side and one on the back in order to put barbell weights on it. Works as both weight storage and holds the stand in place

I'd say definitely add some.coach bolts as you've suggested, but as far as the wobble goes, even if it's flat it's still going to wobble when you lift it. Best bet I'd say is going to be to weigh it down with sandbags (seeing as you dont want to bolt it to the floor).

You need a weighted base. Put sandbags on the legs to stop it from moving.
(FIRST TIME SEEING THIS CHANNEL &THIS VIDEO). All you have to do is add counter waits from what i can see the bottom platform is a perfect size especilly for indoor use
Thanks. Right now I have a couple of bags of concrete sitting on the base, and that seems to be working. Hope to pick up some 45lbs plate weights in the future.
Looks good and I think your potential solutions are good. I might add an angle brace at the bottom on the back side of the upright post similar to the one where the top support intersects with the upright post, as it looks light the upright is flexing when you hit it. Once you get some no slip of some kind on the bottom you could put a couple concrete blocks on it to give it more weight on the bottom to help anchor it. Don't know if that would help or not.
Bags are a good workout, and low impact, except on the hands. LOL
Thanks David, I can always count on you for some good solution advice. I didn't really realize how much the post flexed until I watched the video. I think the lower base like the upper one is a great idea! I will try that along with the shims before I add any additional weights to it. I would really like it to work without any more weight to it, in case we need to move it around. 🙂
This is my favorite video on a hanging a punching bag. My question is can this be done on my shed ? Maybe keep the noise away from my wife.
I bet it could be done in the shed. Depending on how solid your floor is, concrete or plywood would probably make a big difference. I added weight to the base of mine to stabilize it more. Good luck!

Just put some sandbags or heavy stones on top of the base so it doesn’t jump around.
I'm going to use the upright setup here with a fence post spike in the bottom to drive into my lawn AND a much smaller variation of a base to aid from rocking and see how this works in my backyard.
A 3 ft spike in the earth and the support base should keep it tight. Hehehe

Will adding weight to the base make it stable? I'm guessing so. And what is "lag"? You mentioned to add lag below the arm or something like that can you explain it? Cause I'm no woodworker
Yes, adding weight to the bottom help! A lag bolt is like a larger, fatter screw. It's much stronger and had a hexagonal head to it, so you will need to predrill a hole and use a wrench to put it in. Google lag bolt and it will give you an idea. Good luck!

If you don't need it to be portable, it would be a lot easier to just cement a 4x4 into the ground. I considered it, but I'd like to be able to move it around my yard (so I don't wear out the grass).
Decent design, appreciate the ideas so far. As you know, the base is lacking stability in particular. I wonder if it was stood on a plywood base or something would it move. Maybe if the boxer was stood on a large plate of wood at the front and the stand was screwed to it. The trouble with these is tolerance over time, and a primary reason why I have hesitated to make one. Would the screws be enough in comparison with big bolts going all the way through the square joints? 🤔
This may sound stupid but I am a beginner, what is the white stuff your are putting down before drilling?
I think you might be referring to the Titebond II Wood glue. It's in a fancy bottle so you can use it without needing to turn the bottle upside.
May be adding some weight on the base would stabilize the stand.

I think the upright support needs to be braced with more wood to keep it from flexing and bolt it to the floor.

Thanks for sharing, very compact design. I'm going to build it as, as a few more braces, carriage bolts, and add some construction adhesive and sandbags. It'll be solid.

You could always just put some sand bags on the base so it won’t move and just not add more wood
I'd worry about all the stress on the base wearing it out after a few workouts.

Does the 4×4 need to be angled back or can I leave it up right I don't have the right tool to cut the 4×4 I'm 16 ain't got the money for it
I feel the angle helps with the balance of the bag. A straight pole would make it want to lean towards you.
You can use a cheap framing square and a hand saw to cut that angle. You can buy used tools on Facebook market place or Craigslist. Half of my tools arr bought that way. Matter of fact, the DeWALT chop saw I purchased for $25 and bought a $13 part to fix it. One of my first videos. Good luck!

3 inchers! They are deck screws that I typically have on hand.

Weight on the base. No offense but have you looked at heavy bag stands? Most have vertical rods to put weight lifting weights on.

Just wondering how long the screws you used for this project please?
Sorry. Just saw this. The long screws for most of the project were 3 inch and the shorter ones for the bracing are 1 1/2 inch. Hope that helps.

Wood pegs in strategic spots weighted down with weights should make it not as wobbly
