  • 80 years ago, Gone With The Wind took America by storm...with Vivien Leigh leading the charge. Her performance is considered one of the greatest in film history, but so much had to happen for her to get that role. In this video, I talk about the notoriously extensive process of casting Scarlett O'Hara and why Vivien Leigh's Oscar was so well deserved.

    So it turns out that IMDB has a picture of George Cukor listed as David O. Selznick on D.O.S's page and I FELL FOR IT...Which is the worst because Cukor is literally one of my favorite directors and that's just the dumbest mistake. Anyway - wanted full transparency on that! I hope you all still enjoy the video!

      @@christopherbrown2706 I've read about that also, that the Indian part of VIvien's lineage was from her mother. I saw a picture of VIvien Leigh from when she had long hair and she had that beautiful, rippling, wavy dark hair that I see on people from India and that part of the world. If people had known about Vivien Leigh's ancestry I wonder if she would have been considered "colored" and not given the role of Scarlett.---Merle Oberon's Indian heritage was concealed, her own mother had to dress like a maid as part of the secrecy.

      @@andrewbrendan1579 I was referring to Anglo Indians like Kipling- British settlers in India and their descendants. That said, you made an EXCELLENT point about Merle Oberon and Vivien's possible rejection (or typecasting à la Myrna Loy, IMO) had her complete heritage been known. Also, I wonder how Olivier would've reacted; would he have matured her anyway or distanced himself from her for his career and reputation?

    Vivien Leigh was, of course, amazing as Scarlett. But I think Olivia de Havilland is very underrated as Melanie. It's hard to believe she was only 22 or 23 when she filmed that role b/c she seemed like a woman beyond her years. The zoom-in close-up of Scarlett in that red velvet dress as she enters the party, defiance masking her fear and that bristle of her shoulder, Vivien's beauty and her talent hit me like a thunderbolt in that moment when I was a kid. She may not have made many films but this one immortalised her. Some A-list actresses with 100 credits to their name will never make this impact.

      You might be my soul mate. I remember first seeing that scene when I was five years old. When Rhett leaves her at the doorway, she’s frightened, and if you look closely to her long earring it got snagged by her veil, like it was hesitant reflecting her fear. Then suddenly she transforms into this fearless warrior going to battle and at the very moment that her eyebrow raises like a cobra ready to strike, her earring drops and that image of divine unmatched beauty with the confidence of an army that I’ll never forget

      Lisa A the dress is in Austin Tx along with several of her dresses and complete reproductions. I’m in Houston so I’ve seen them a few times . The party dress seems red on film, but in reality, it’s totally burgundy. There’s some great video clips on line of the restoration of these gowns. The curtain dress has faded into a chartreuse green/yellow . Vivien Leigh was extremely petite. You’ll see her bodice in the barbecue dress and she must have been a size 2 in our modern size chart. I know that her waist was 22 inches in the corset , my neck size is almost 18 lol . I’m an avid Vivien Leigh fan and have read almost everything I could about her since I was a kid. Alexander Walker has a great biography on her with many personal details you should look up. I’ve chatted with her great granddaughter, Sophie Farrington , who is my age and has a great UA-cam documentary on her great grandmother. Check them out . I think when someone has so much beauty and talent, there always plague with a curse. Vivien’s life had its accomplishments but mixed in were so much tragedy and heartache. She suffered greatly throughout many period of her short life. Check some of the documentaries out :)

      Alys Tarot Moonscape it’s funny you mention that. Plenty of people before the modern era had excellent bone structure. Looking at the bones of hunter gatherers, they seemed to have far superior jaw growth and facial bone density. They also had perfect neck and tongue posture, as do modern hunter gatherers. It is with the introduction of processed foods and unnatural lifestyles where we see asymmetry in faces. Vivian Leigh has excellent neck posture and was most likely breastfed (as opposed to being bottle fed). She also probably had a pretty tough to chew diet.

In other words, Viven's personality in real life was very similar to the character of Scarlett O'Hara....the friend also stated the anger and impatience of Scarlett later in the movie was easy for Viven to do because her lover Laurence Oliver had to leave for New York to do a play---Viven wanted to Hurry, Hurry, Hurry and get the movie finished so she could leave Hollywood to join him...and this anger was projected into and out through Scarlett. Vivian Leigh is my Bipolar Icon. There aren’t too many famous and talented (to this level) bipolar people, really. Not when you consider that it’s not that rare a condition. I think a lot of that has to do with the stigma it brings- even now. We’ve gotten better about mental illness to a point. By that I mean that stigma has reduced- but mostly only for depression and anxiety. And it’s good that’s happened, they are the most common mental illnesses.
    But bipolar still seems to be in that category of “scary” mental illnesses, along with others like schizophrenia. And those of us in this latter category haven’t seen that much of a reduction in the stigma of our illnesses.
    So it’s nice to have such a talented woman to point to. An icon in her own right, respected by her industry and beyond. And perhaps if she had lived now, when medications are more advanced than they were then, we’d have a more extensive filmography. But, I’m happy with what we got. And I’m very happy to have someone like Vivian Leigh to point to and say “see, we’re not so scary!”

Clark Gable as "Rhett Butler" would be difficult enough to replicate. However I simply cannot imagine any other actress carrying the role of the capricious and tempestuous, "Scarlett O'Hara", as so utterly believably as Vivien Leigh. "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It..!!"

    I consider this "Be Kind Rewind's" best video. I have watched it multiple times. Without Vivien Leigh, GWTW would not be the ultimate classic film it is today. Leigh breathed life into the cardboard character of Scarlet O'Hara. No other actress could have done it like she did.

    This movie's a guilty pleasure for me.
    The preformances all around are great, especially Vivien Leigh, the set and costume deaign's beautiful, and Scarlett really is a glorious milestone in how female characters were written.
    Unfortunately, it's REALLY hard for me to watch the movie without noticing how romanticized the Civil War is. And then there's the sexual assault element, which... yeah.

    • @francisco.mrsm.22
      @francisco.mrsm.22 4 роки тому +7

      @S Oh yeah definitely.
      And not to forget Butterfly McQueen's chataracter being an annoying/sexist/racist charicature that's basically just there to drive Scarlett up a wall and show off how low her life is.
      That's probably the worst parts of the movie put together. Everything is contorted in favor of Scarlett's character, so the racist and sexist tropes in the movie are all used to lift Scarlett up, while sinking everyone else (except Rhett Butler).

    • @namefirstnamelast6404
      @namefirstnamelast6404 4 роки тому +10

      @S The Civil War was romanticized by the people who lived through it, after it, and many even today. But you, looking at it and judging it with your modern point of view shows how foolish you really are. If you are unable to look at things from the perspective of a person in another time and another life situation, you have a very small point of view, and that makes your life and your world very small. Try to put yourself in the shoes of a black woman in the 1930's, who wants to work in Hollywood. Or in the shoes of a woman in the 1860's who is a widow at the age of 18, has a child, younger sisters, and a senile father to care for, who are all now destitute. Those same people just a few years earlier had wealth and privilege, and she has lost her mother. I'm not saying you should sympathize with anyone. I'm saying that you should try to understand their point of view, and don't judge them too harshly based on what 20/20 hindsight your birth year has afforded you.

    • @namefirstnamelast6404
      @namefirstnamelast6404 4 роки тому +3

      @S seeing the faults of time that is not your own is easy, and pretty much anyone can do it. It is not highly reflexive at all. What you've done, is regurgitate what you were taught. Try instead to understand the people of that time and the world they lived in. UNDERSTANDING takes a different skill set entirely. It requires study and acceptance that even in the present time, ourselves will one day be seen as primitive and backwards. An educated person can still be ignorant.
