The Unfortunate Problem with the Creality CR-X 3D Printer

  • The Creality CR-X 3d printer has some new features that make it quite interesting to work with, especially the added second extruder for dual extruder capabilities.
    HOWEVER - the machine sadly lacks much quality control, and the machine I have is different than what was announced, and most likely different than the machine you would receive.
    How am I suppose to do a review on that? Simple - I won't be.

    Before opening the box, an extra extruder, dual port nozzle and touch screen doesn’t justify an $800 price, $400 increase over a CR-10 is ridiculous. Your experience makes it worse.

      + CHEP ... One year later ... the CR-10 costs about $ 360 and a CR-X about $490.
      And *now the question is:* do $ 130 justify "an extra extruder, dual port nozzle and touch screen"?!?
      ... Maybe, it's time to re-review an actual machine? Even an unfair comparison with an Ender 3 would be nice, since this machine is 3 times the price!
      I would love to see that on filament friday!
      Greetings from Germany!

      Hope they finally understand where their interest is.
      They need to be honest with testers. And since they decided to go on the route of externalized testing like in software industry, maybe they should do the same and offer bug bounties to reward testers.

      And Naomi, PLEASE let them know their customer service SUCK really bad.....They never answer messages...To get one was necessary to open a dispute on aliexpress, because they simply FORGOT to send the longer cables i bought for my CR-10S....It´s insane to spend 460 euros in a product and not have a seller answer when you have questions..... TEVO are doing a much better job in this area and i really think instead of getting another CR-10S(or CR-X) im going for Tevo little Monster.

      I read a book about cultural differences which lead to misunderstandings and bad results when westerners deal with Chinese companies; it really opened my eyes to some things I was not previously aware of, including that it is common for Chinese manufacturers to make lots of changes to a product after it is designed and released. (the book was titled "Poorly made in China"). Personally, I have nothing against improving products for either quality improvement or cost reduction (that's just good business), but I do have a problem with undocumented and unexpected changes that do not enable users to know what changed and when, so that informed purchasing decisions can be made. In the west, if a product changes just a little bit and in an immaterial way, we expect revision numbers and a revision history log to inform us of those changes. And if a product changes in a material way impacting fit, form, or function, then the product's name should change to indicate that it is really a different product. That's how you build strong brand trust, and repeat customers; with consistency!

    Angus, at maker's muse, had the same issue with the bed leveling. As well as most of the others. If they want beta testers, they should do what the software companies do and have a selection of people they send them to so they can tell them what the bugs are they need to fix. These ppl rarely get paid but do get to use it for free.

      s R in the United States that might work in China that won't work look how long it took geeetech to put on a clone... I think about that for a moment how many Ender threes have been sold in the last couple months... They would have all been geeetech sales don't get me wrong I like geeetech I love their printers but they cloned the under 3 so did TiVo with the Flash both clones of the Ender 3 have they done what you suggested they be out of business... So how do you get around that? I don't have the answer for that but I know they could not have done a small release and spent the next couple months iterating in house because all the other manufacturers would have destroyed them in sales so they would be bleeding money in R&D and QC while the competition is raking in the money and don't tell me it settles out over time when people realize the good stuff over the bad stuff because the Clones will just copy the good stuff too it's not like here in the US we have to spend a fortune to set up a company and set up Manufacturing anybody over there in China can walk down the halls of their business districts and grab all the parts they need to start manufacturing a printer I wouldn't be surprised if you can go from I'm going to create xyzprinting today and next week you're shipping a printer it's that easy over there so we should be careful what we wish for :-) creality is trying to be a good neighbor the others are not that doesn't mean we excuse their mistakes that doesn't mean we called him out on the floor like Joel was doing here and like I missed it the mistakes in this printer while I consider them very minor are also in theory very easy to catch in manufacturing and should have been especially for one of their first pro-level printers one of their higher-end models which is what the CRX is supposed to be so I'm not saying go easy on them but let's attacking from the right angle and I fully admit I'm not sure what that angle is but I don't think the process of beta testing with customers is a bad one if done properly

    • @nerored6235

      It's no different than them sending the stuff to reviewers like they do now, only the problems don't get plastered on the net and the user is very aware that they might get something that is more junk than anything. It doesn't have to be done by the guy next door.

      Only in the short-term. this kind of thing only really works with software which people can get fixed for free so long as they have an internet connection. With Hardware it ruins your brand reputation and causes people to stop trusting you thus it causes people to stop buying thier product.
      In the long run doing this could cost them everything.

    • @vng
      @vng 6 років тому +4

      And another issue is that all of us free beta testers do not have free access to future upgrades. And worse, they don't even tell you what has been improved based on feedback or not, so even if you buy a new one, you are not guaranteed that things have changed.

    Sometimes I get the feeling that these companies don't even understand what they are making. My Creality CR-7 is a prime example. It shipped without a heated bed, so only PLA. Good, fine. Yet it had no part cooling fan so no PLA either. Even weirder is that the PCB cooling fan plugs into the port for the part cooling fan so if you don't turn the fan on in g-code, the PCB could potentially overheat. The annoying thing is, for maybe $30 more I fixed all the problems and now it prints better than my Ultimaker or Prusa. Like you said with this machine, they get 81% there and then quit. It's so frustrating.

  • @christophermaschek
    @christophermaschek 6 років тому +10

    It seems that more 3d printing companies are using their customers to find the problems and report back, then improving as they go. I am glad about them fixing known issues, but it make you not want to be the first one diving in on a new model.

    • @nerys71
      @nerys71 6 років тому +1

      Christopher Maschek correct this is what I tell my viewers don't buy the first run wait a couple months at least with creality printers you'll always get a working machine but the first batch or two will need little fixes
      As far as I know they are the only company iteratively improving their products TiVo ads corrections to the next product but does not appear to improve the existing product at least not yet

    Quality control is severely lacking in a lot of products today. I work in the tech industry, management pushes for unrealistic time lines, when the engineers explain what they can deliver by the unrealistic timeline, management states, “approved”. Mid-management to executive management are to blame for product that meets the market unfinished. Today’s management 101 is to cut corners in timeline, cut cost, and cut experienced engineers for low cost newb employees. The only way for this process to change is to have a law, or lawsuit that will hurt their bonuses, and pocket books . As consumers, we need to hold them accountable for releasing unfinished products. Thank you for your help in taking a stand!

  • @gh0s7ny

    It's not just Creality, lot of tech companies are like this. The manual for my Cetus 3D did not match the machine I got. This whole idea of using early adaptors as testers came from software companies. It worked for them because their product were not physical, they can push fixes to customers via the net. I used to be an early adaptor, but I've given that up since a lot of tech companies has adopted this QA model.

Changing the design in the last moment and ship it like that? Commercial video showing one products and now we have different one? Why?! I don't get it... What's the rush?! Sorry, I am totally out of the loop here, but just a question on the background/context of this video as I have been looking into buying a Creality machine. Did they send you a review unit for free and/or are these printers currently being sold in this state to customers? If the review unit was free but not yet commercially available, I feel that some QC problems should be expected as there are probably still ongoing hardware design iterations. In the same vein though, I feel like you can then also fairly say "this unit isn't there yet, do not buy." However if this current version is for sale, then I agree that the QC problems could be an issue. Having first started with 3D printer kits back in the day, maybe my tolerance for this kind of stuff is higher than the average user, but I also feel like a true, 100% novice-user-friendly 3D printer is still a while away, so some manual labor will always be required regardless.

      Calvin Witt I agree. They need to not be rushing to produce the next big thing. That will only lead to disaster, It’s not worth it if they drive the ones doing things the correct way into the ground because they won’t cut corners. We need great reliable machines that are consistently produced the same way.

    If this is a $800 printer just get the folgertech ft-5 r2 yes its more of a kit, yes more assembly is required, yes to get dual extrusion you would need to fashion your own y connector or add a second extruder, but its $500 with 300x300x400 build volume, better support, a ridiculously rigid frame and it should work first thing after assembled, oh and did I mention folgertech wont beta test on you :P.
    obviously this comment is half a joke, but I seriously cannot see why in the world people would by a $800 printer from china that has a single nozzle dual extruder with no bed leveling when you could get a $500 printer add $20-30 in parts, configure a couple lines of code in marlin and have a dual extruding machine cheaper and probably with a little less headache than the cr-x.
    Love what you do joel, and I love the honesty in the video.

    The Z rod is held onto the motor by a coupler with two screws. Lots of motor shaft showing below it.
    Loosen the screws and lower the coupler 0.1 inch? That could let the bed lower enough.

    It is refreshing to see a machine that did not receive a glowing review. Quality control is the issue with many of these units and I feel that many purchase them expecting all roses since most reviews depict them in such a flattering way. These I3 clone machines have become so bland and boring . PLEASE stop making the same cookie cutter I3 style machines. I understand that many people want larger, cheaper machines but this has stunted all innovation. Most manufacturers seem to have forgotten about 32bit boards, direct drive, Core XY, true multi extrusion and enclosed units in favor of what they can manufacture cheaply and easily. At this point there are plenty of low cost, good quality machines. Let's see something new. Raise3D has great machines but not everyone has the 3k plus that they cost. My kingdom for some innovation!

    Thank you for the video! I’ve been considering the CR-10 vs the CR-X and I’m now definitely going with the CR-10. Ive done science projects before (rigidbot big) and I’m still working on it. They should advertise that these are beta tested (although I doubt they will). Makes me cautious to buy any new printers from them in the future. At least if it’s advertised that I’m beta testing then I would feel better about it, and not frustrated and cheated.

    You are so right. I recently purchased a printer from a popular new contender in the resin printer market based on some reviews. I love it now, but it was a long and painful road that involved waiting for replacement parts to ship from China that I had to install myself. Couple that with the fact that the machine I received was slightly different than the one I saw in reviews, and that there is yet another version of the machine shipping now, it feels like they've been shipping a product that isn't quite production ready and relying on customer service requests to finish it. Not saying a machine can't evolve over time, but basic things like wobble in the lead screw and acrylic panels that properly block UV should've been done right from the start. I love this field or hobby or whatever you want to call it, but these companies really need to slow down and make sure they are sending quality machines both for review and final sales or we risk a market flooded with sub par garbage.

    And the high spot in the middle of the bed is down to one of two things. Either too much tension on the build plate (unlikely as its spring mounted) or shoddy manufacturing. Bad manufacturing can be remedied but requires specialist know-how and tools. Feel free to contact me if you want to go in-depth on this.

    This seems like a large number of companies way around internal testing. They have apparently found that it is cheaper to send a bunch of their Pre-Production printers to people who then unwittingly test them for free, as well as advertise the new model for free, instead of having workers at the company test them when they could be doing other things at the same pay rate.

      They could literally beta test things on customers- but they need to say it's a beta and discount it appropriately. For instance, Ubiquiti has a beta store for their new products, and when you get one it is because you acknowledged you want early stage gear.

      Agreed, mesh leveling is just making the customer pay extra for a workaround to deal with a cheap flimsy weak bed. It would cost less to take a thick sheet of metal, flatten it, and just put 1 fixed point and 2 thumb screws to level it on both directions.

    yeah i recently got into 3d printing myself and as it stands for me, based on the development of the market the cr-10s is by far the best bang for the buck still. it might not do dual but quality wise and setup was super easy and we're printing away with only minor issues from user error and learning. i hope the beta testing on first buyers stops, i'd love to be able to buy the latest and greatest if it didnt come at the risk of design flaws.

  • @Jason-yn6oy
    @Jason-yn6oy 6 років тому

    Hey Joel, to mix it up even a little bit more the CR-X that we received allowed us to move the acrylic bracket holding the Zedd and stop down enough to allow the nozzle to touch the bed with the Springs compressed a little. I'm going to take another look to see if the bracket is different than yours. Also, there was no rough hand-drilled hole for the second z motor wires.
    Unlike you, I had an absolutely miserable time getting anything to stick to that bed surface... Without the use of glue stick. Even then, the models would pop off about three-quarters of the way through.
    Have you had the LCD bring up random messages and crash? I've had to reboot more than once because of this.

    Totally agree. I got a Creality-CR10 S5 and... Really, I feel like you. Is like they use the customers as beta tester, selling products that are not ready at all to work! In the Creality-CR10 s5, for exemple (there are ALOT of things that actually doesn't work) the bowden tube with cables are so long that everything fall INTO the print... Nothing there is designed to prevent this, then seriusly, this printer can't print. It's ridiculous.

    This is why we have started building our own 3d printers for our business. The Creality printers were the best, but could be a lot better, the real nightmare machines were from a company called Geeetech (yes, 3e's), total disaster, the wiring harness had problems, the parts did not fit together, the software had mistakes and when finally it was possible to print something the aluminum platform was warped by about 2mm in the middle. Thanks Geeetech, you motivated us to make really good 3 colour printers

  • @truetech4158

    4 printers over here and had challenges to each of them, such as missing parts, broken parts, missing micro SD chip, a substituted part that were not advertised such as a push button controller rather than what should've had a dial instead, defective controller cards, even bought a defective smoothieboard, english marketing, non english instructions, and a Anet seller who played games with cat n mouse messages for months rather than to ship a vital missing part. I ended up ordering the part from someplace else, and ebay read the messages and was amazed at how the seller tried to keep a dialogue going with the intention to make the ordeal run past eBay's customer complaints time limit. After the time limit, the seller became less responsive, skipping inquiries, and always 48 hours and not a minute sooner if to reply back, as per eBay's time limit policy. Even past the 60 day time limit, ebay realized the seller was a complete loogin, so ebay made an exception to their preset time limit and offered me a complete refund, though i opted for just enough to cover the cost of the missing part.
    And why advertise a project as being ideal for ABS, then make sure to not include a heatbed capable of reaching a typical ABS temperature setting, not even after waiting the usual hour it takes to max out.
    Yes, the bed levelling screws are poorly designed, that involved adding extra springs and washers, and even then, that maxes out at its barely within a hairs range of being ideal.
    Had a extruder framing melt and was observed dripping while smoldering towards housefire, and it would've eventually because being a delta meant it would've tossed the firey stuff over to one side past the printer eventually. Thermal runaway at the thermistor or the controller card. Damn things should have a bonus smoke alarm mounted to them really.
    I guess this is how it was when the first cars were being sold too. Lol
    Now, they only make them to eventually fall apart, often very shortly after the we got you covered time limit is reached.
    Let's see more effort put into the recycling of plastics when it comes to the 3d printing world. Printers designed with a complete recycler setup either built in or included affordably so as if to encourage responsibility towards our planet, or should all fish in the ocean and people that eat them end up with 3 eyes?

  • @RonFloyd

    Unfortunately, this corporate attitude has become the norm in the "I Was First!" world of the 21st Century. We see this in so many fields: News, automobiles, toys, pharmaceuticals, software, food, UA-cam videos, 3D Printers, etc. It seems that being first takes precedence over EVERYTHING else! Everyone wants to scoop everyone else. In the past (way past), development of new products often took many years. But, now, with CNCs, CAD/CAM, (and, yes, 3D printers), instant world-wide marketing, corporate spying, incomplete prototyping, super-fast production venues, et al., this practice has become the inevitable result of businesses trying to apply Moore's Law to all aspects of manufacturing. But, it just doesn't work that way in many areas, unfortunately.
    I see it only getting worse though - not better - in the near future at least. Our primal need for "Instant Gratification" drives it forward at a faster and faster pace. There's nothing wrong with a company offering qualified people a chance to beta test a product (for free or at very low cost) and listening/reacting to their feedback - as long as that manufacturer is up front about it, and delays shipping "production" units until discovered issues are 99% addressed. But, claiming that those beta units are fully tested and the production units are now ready to ship is not only unethical, but sometimes dangerous - and even potentially deadly. In the software industry, ethical companies will often release beta, and possibly unstable versions of their software, knowing full well that there will be some users who actually enjoy running tests on, and evaluating such products. But, the average user is discouraged from using them until those beta tests have been completed, and the newest (mostly stable) versions are released to the general public - with documented and realistic, updated version numbers prominently affixed. But, hardware is more difficult to approach in the same manner. Few manufacturers make even the most feeble attempt at doing so. Cutting costs and reducing lead times takes the forefront as a general rule.
    Until we all become the new Howard Beales (of "Network" fame) and finally open up all of the windows and yell "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!", nothing is going to change. Why should it? Luckily, for us, you, Angus, Naomi, and others are in such a prominent position that you CAN make a difference here, and force manufacturers to step up to the plate and change their ways, or suffer the consequences of their inactions. Kudos to you all. Keep up the good work, and stick to your guns here. Thanks!

    Not to make excuses for Creality (the bed leveling issue should be solved before they ship), but I was able to get around the issue of the springs not compressing on my CR-10S by adding some 3d printed spacers in-between the bottom of the spring and the y axis carriage. It's a band-aid on a problem that shouldn't exist, but it does work.

    It's odd to me that they would chose to go this way, I and many others would be more than happy to take a free machine, beta it, report back any issues, suggestions etc. in exchange for a new printer, or even a greatly reduced printer. The concept is good the execution is flawed. I cant imagine sending my "prototype" to an opinion guy with out any agreement in place and just hoping for the best. That is ludicrous.

    Is this something that creality does? Change their printers at random? Because I got an ender 3 not too long ago and it has a weird removable bed on it. And I couldn't find any reviews on UA-cam showing that. The worst part is that I feel like the removable bed was a last minute thought because it's made of plastic or something. It's surface is uneven so i have to get a glass bed to print anything. Don't get why they wouldn't just keep the original bed that wasn't so crazy warped

    This machine seems to be a great evolution of the cr10, I'm really interested in the dual extrusion system, I like how it's not the big Y adapter like seen in the past. Not having abl though, especially with creality selling an abl sensor as an add on fo r the cr10 [stolen, it seems, but still] is a huge miss. It needs it. For the next evolution, for the price, for the market....it should be standard by now.

    After watching this video I actually went ahead and bought this printer. BEST. INVESTMENT. EVER. Not sure why its getting so many negative reviews. The only (and I mean only) thing that isn't quite right is the glass plate. It is exactly 0.1mm lower in the centre than the outside. Hasn't stopped the prints from sticking though. The dual extrusion system works perfectly and I have been cranking out prints nonstop. And the print quality is amazing. Hands down the best £525 I ever spent.

      So, you just recently purchased the printer, and the one I tried was months and months ago. They've changed and upgraded and updated and quality controlled this machine. I'm willing to bet if I had your machine as opposed to the one I had, it would have been a very different experience.

    • @baz6128
      @baz6128 5 років тому

      Probably. But that's kind of the way with chinese manufacturers. Products are constantly upgraded. My point is that these things do upgrade over time and things change. Another thing to point out is the waste material used for purging. Yes, its a lot but that's kind how this system works. Personally I don't mind the waste as all I'm interested in isa high quality print. Yet review after review all that is mentioned is the waste (and everyone breaks out a scale). Yet no-one mentions that the print quality (which happens to be typically Creality i.e. very good) No-one mentions that you can use this for single extrusion prints (no purging). I just felt that your review did not go into any depth. Most reviewers didn't though.
