This all goes back to the famous ad-hoc Montana (Whipping Floss) version during the 1974 Helsinki concert (with the Roxy lineup) which only came out in 1988 on volume two of You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore. So this particular live performance must have been around the 10-year anniversary of that first rendition which makes it all the more interesting. You really gotta listen to the guy yelling from the audience requesting WP, FZ not knowing the song and the guy going "yoooyooyooo" followed by an improvised kinky down tempo version of Montana, it's quiet a gem. ua-cam.com/video/SnEiZ2ESOOY/v-deo.htmlsi=lbp_htNz5roqKAzj
Was listening to Zappa's "Whipping Post" with my band as we were all riding together in the van on the way home after playing. At one point when the band stopped playing and you could hear the sound of the live audience, my bass player was freaking out, suddenly realizing that he was listening to a live performance. "WHAT! This is LIVE?" We were all in shock, honestly.
You can see the satisfaction in Franks face after Robert Martin's vocal performance, can't blame him, this was incredible, this was one of my favorite Zappa lineups.
One of the greatest things about Frank is you can listen to 10 live recordings of the same song and all of them will have different solos, vocals, breakdowns and components. You never got the exact same song twice
@scottmendelson2315 Zappa is better known now than ever before , a percussionist, and self taught Guitarist , but clearly a Virtuoso , and the greatest COMPOSER and CONDUCTOR,,MULTI INSTRUMENTALIST, OF THE 20TH CENTURY , 126 ALBUMS , PLUS THE SOLOS , I'M NOT SURE BUT THERE IS MORE OUT THERE THAN OFFICIALLY STATED , 1 HAVE 100 ALBUMS, NOT COUNTING THE DOUBLE UPS 1 ONLY , AND THERE IS ABOUT 40 I HAVE HEARD , AND DON'T HAVE , I WANT ALL , IT ALL ZZZzzzaaaappppa .....Luv on - yah

I used to go see him in NYC every Halloween. Then some jerk weed stole a bunch of his equipment and he announced he’d never play in New York ever again ☹️ What a stupid stupid thing to do You’d never be able to play the guitar in public and would you really trust your friends by telling them? Hey I just stole Some of Zappas stage stuff! I’d beat the guys ass big time
This was the most awesome show! Afterwards, we met Frank for the first of many times. He was the epitome of cool, and so generous w his time after the show.
When I was in my late teens I owned this concert on DVD and I used to carry it with me everywhere and watch it anywhere I went. This is one of my favourite tunes from the show. ❤️
Ok. You were an odd bird yes? I appreciate that you had to spread the word though It did not make it to me though. I thought frank was a snooty radio personality or something I only recall the valley girl song which since I really was a valley girl I thought it was pretty funny This is the best version of this song All others sound tired in comparison.
This is how I was introduced to Zappa. My best friend in high school was a big Zappa fan and we would listen to music, play guitar and watch movies and concerts on the various DVD's he had and when he put this in, I was hooked and became a Zappa fan that day. I really need to reconnect with him and see how he's doing. It's been way too long. Thanks for reminding me of a happy time during my adolescence.
Felt the fluff I know what you mean, but don't forget - Beethoven was deaf when he wrote his 9th Symphony. There is nothing like the feels you get when listening to music, but I can remember tunes I have not heard in fifty years, on pitch and note for note, all in my head.
I've seen Frank smile lots of times. But it is true that this became a rare sight in the 1980s, when he started leaning hard into his cynical public persona and was pretty much disgusted with the world, I guess.
I saw them on that same tour in Seattle. The crowd went wild, all of us jumping to our feet. We were blown away by Bobby Martin and the entire, extraordinary band.
Had the pleasure of seeing Frank play live... and it was Incredible!!! Also have had the pleasure meeting Dweezil a few times at NAMM shows in Anaheim Ca. And he is a very kind and talented man!!!
I met Dweezil in London on the tour before Hot Rats live. Got a signed setlist too. Whilst I had the chance, I asked him "if they ever do a reboot of The Running Man, would you be in it?" and he chuckled and said "no". Because absurdity is the only reality.
This is where my Zappa journey started back in 1995. I stumbled upon a clip of the band playing Whipping Post on Serbian tv late one night. Musically, I've never looked back. Zappa's very much what we Brits call a Marmite artist; you either love his music or you hate it. Those who hate it are missing out.
I was at the live at the Fillmore recording of the original Allman Brothers version. This singer is good, but Greg Allman was on a difference dimension. And let's not forget Greg was 22-23 yrs old at the time. This guy is more of a pop singer; a good one for sure. It seems forced whereas Greg puts his soul into it. And while I'm a huge Zappa fan, saw him several times, and he does well with this version...it doesn't compare to the emotion that the Allmans put into it.
Was actually at this concert. Sadly I was too inexperienced as a Zappa fan to truly appreciate what I was seeing. Luckily I was able to get the DVD later on.
I'm sort of surprised that so few have mentioned the performance here by the singer (whose name I don't know)...my goodness!! That guy's vocals are immaculate!!! His singing is pitch perfect! And this is not an easy song to sing....
Robert martin. Like all Franks musicians.... AMAZING!!! Talk about multi talented! The 1 good thing about Frank being a music nazi is that he went thru a lot of musicians. So as u go thru the yrs ur always hearing fresh, new, amazing talent! In my opinion the late 70s were the best zappa yrs!
Yup, Robert Martin. Aka Bobby. He toured with Zappa for number of years, and played keyboards, horns, and vocals for quite a few tours before Zappa disbanded his shows in 1988. What a quality musician, as are all of Zappa' s Band Members.
ON the vocals.... Robert "Bobby" Martin (born June 1948) is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Martin sings and plays keyboards, horns, saxophones and other instruments. Born: June 1948, Philadelphia Profession: Singer-songwriter, Multi-instrument... The singers name is Robert Martin and he totally stole the show with his exceptional vocal performance. Even FZ had this look on his face like” damn he’s killing it again and I’ve gotta follow this?!?!”
So true! Frank is/was just as humble as Clint: They allways gave the spotlight to another greats diminshing their own greatness, like to Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman etc.
I saw that tour. No way in hell did Bobby Martin steal the show ... with a cover. A great cover, and the finale ... but a cover! My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama!

The thing that always brings tears to my eyes is when Robert Martin sings the last sentence, "there ain't no such thing as dying" and they zoom in on Zappa and the look in his eyes, he didn't know at that time but somehow it looks as if he knew, damn I wish I could have seen him live once.
this was their final encore when i saw them at brendan byrne arena in the meadowlands in 1984. i've always said it was the best live song i've ever heard done. absolutely amazing cover.
I've just given the 2nd like in 5 years to this comment. I do hope this unbelievable quality of music is not being slowly forgotten as we old rockers fade away!
There is a good version of Whipping Post on them or us , sounds like George Dukes or Ike Willis don't jump on me , it's not Bobby ok , the solo is awesome, he just the ubeaut
I've always loved this song by ABB and I've been a FZ fan for fifty years. Having said that, I live across the street from a bar where there have been many, many bands over the years. I made it a habit to go to the stage during sound check or whenever to ask a member of the band if they played Whipping Post. The answer was almost always no. In my mind, it was a way to separate the wheat from the chaff. And it was 100% reliable.
I saw Zappa a bunch of times in the 70's, never knew him to ever do a song by another band. That he did Whippin' Post by the Allman Brothers is amazing, as is this performance overall.
I _love_ that FZ decided to cover “Whipping Post” because some guy in Finland yelled out for it-and he (FZ) decided that, if any audience member _ever_ requested it again in like manner, he was going to be _ready_ for it.
Oh, the incomparable TONE of Frank's guitar!
Robert Martin absolutely killing it on lead vocals! What a voice!
CHAMPION.
Inarguable.
Imagine what the selection procedure was for the Zappa band.
Sounds like Pat Travers only better!
Killing it for sure, other guitar was also a McKay?
amazing!
Huge ABB fan. I enjoyed it. Zappa choosing to cover it was a complement.

One of the greatest things about Frank is you can listen to 10 live recordings of the same song and all of them will have different solos, vocals, breakdowns and components. You never got the exact same song twice
Frank Zappa was one of the most underrated guitarists ever.
100% He never gets mentioned as one of the best ever but clearly was, makes Hendrix look like a novice
Also an under-rated composer, arranger and producer.
I saw him in the UK in 1970. So unbelievably overated.

Frank always surrounded himself with musicians who could play any damned thing any damned way. "Beethoven's 3rd in F# and 7/4? Here you go."
Couldn't do Reggae in 9/8
Frank's guitar solos are like Rembrandt's drawings.
R.I.P. Gregg Allman great song!!!
Nice to see they finally pleased that guy in Helsinki. Keep up the humbleness Frank!

If you don’t turn it down you will definitely affect your precious hearing.
The bass playing during the solo is out of this world.
I love the bass line during the solo
Sometimes I feel. Sometimes I feel. Like I want this song to go on forever.
This is the closest you’re going to ever get to a smile on Frank’s face
4:59 - I don't know if I've ever seen anything but disdain coming from Frank, but holy shit is that a smile and/or ...admiration?!!
I've seen Frank smile lots of times. But it is true that this became a rare sight in the 1980s, when he started leaning hard into his cynical public persona and was pretty much disgusted with the world, I guess.
This was the final encore number they played in ATL when I saw them in '84. Amazing concert!
I saw them on that same tour in Seattle. The crowd went wild, all of us jumping to our feet. We were blown away by Bobby Martin and the entire, extraordinary band.
He does what I never dreamt of was possible... A true genius!
Best ever version. The editing using Frank's expressions for licks was lovely.
Best ever version? Hilarious... Frank noodling around as usual. No soul. Duane would have left the stage
@@mastorey1 That's okay...it's over your head 😉👍
@mastorey1 Exactly. Zappa's talented but he uses the basic Allman Brothers arrangement and adds his overblown pretentiousness. It delves into parody.
@@mastorey1bullshit, Duane would have jumped on stage & jammed, dickey too.
@@MundaSquirebullshit, he did an interlude for duane
so blessed to have seen Frank in concert ! genius
There's some who see the genius of Zappa, and there's others who like Toto's Rosanna 🤣🤣🤣
This vid is one of my favorites. The close ups of the faces . . priceless memories of Frank and Bobby at their best. Love it/them. x
That's the way to play a spiritual
1973 we drove to Boston From Cape Cod to see Frank in a blizzard driving in a big dump truck. 75 miles each way.
That's dedication lol
*Thank you* for this upload. I've never seen it before and I just love Frank Zappa. :D
