They actually do know his problems really are on his plate; this is their way of playing games with him. And now I see what some user meant when they compared this to a cult movie, because Nick and Lily are trying to brainwash Michael into becoming a cannibal like themselves. Really, if you think about it, that’s just what they’re trying to do-brainwash him so as to turn “bad guy,” there is even that one scene towards the end where Nick tells Michael,”You’re an outsider, you’re not like the rest of the world, but us.”

The whole high school theatre gang went to see it on opening weekend, we felt very edgy and cool afterwards. Retro-ironic kitsch was very much the temper of the time. Throw in some transgressive horror and violence and 18 year old me though it was $4:50 well spent.

I thought this movie was actually pretty good for it's time. The camera work such as the angles they used in some scenes was pretty creative and even though it's a horror comedy, it was decieving. There wasn't much funny comedy in it. It was much more darker than I was expecting. And lastly, Randy Quaid was amazing in it. He's was creepy guy and nailed it perfectly. :)

Yes, Michael really is "beyond his years," certainly smart, and intuitive, for a 10-year-old; he KNOWS that what his parents tell him is NOT true, that they have been eating LEFTOVERS, every single night, since they moved to their new town. And YES, you would have thought a sequel could have followed_GRANDPARENTS-due to the way this ends.

I saw this movie several years ago, and while it was scary, there were also things that didn't make sense. For instance, if these parents really wanted to raise their son as a cannibal, why didn't they eat this strange meat before they moved to this area, and why were they intent on hiding the fact that it was human flesh. Another scene that didn't make sense was the one where the body was hidden in the cellar. Why didn't they eat it?

Furthermore, I never got(and still don't)get the one scene, where Sheila has "quit school," and they both go out of their way(basically her doing, though)to "destroy his house," I mean, since it really has nothing to do with the rest of the plot. Unless the part where Nick(Quaid)is giving Michael a talking to, for what he did, and ordering him, that he is to have nothing more to do with Sheila, could be an indication as to how wrong Nick is about Sheila(she really is trying to help Michael).

According to what someone had told me once, Long Island Iced Tea was originally made spiked with alcohol in it(I'm referring to the scene where Michael's parents and his friend Sheila's parents are playing bridge, and Sheila's mom announces that the iced tea they're drinking "is from Long Island,"when Lily(Michael's mom, played by Mary Beth Hurt),claims that she's starting to feel tipsy). And I had heard, that the 1950s were when the "original"brands of Long Island Iced Tea were made. I think this is supposed to take place in fall 1958-if you notice carefully in the kitchen scenes at Laemle's, there is a calendar, and it always seemed to say "September 1958."
