  • Phil Mickelson was poised to finally shake his Sunday U.S. Open woes. Could he hold off a fierce group of golf's best, that included Jason Day, Justin Rose, Hunter Mahan, and more?

While so many US Opens are remembered for Mickelson defeats, that final round from Rose on this course is well worth the trophy.

Justin Rose is one of the most thoughtful and respectful sportsman out there. Always a class act.

If Phil had won this championship, there would have been a plaque installed on the 10th hole where he holed out that wedge shot from 76 yards for eagle. But alas, the Hogan plaque on 18 is still the only one Merion. On another note, I’d love to see the US Open return to Merion. What a fantastic course, truly one of the best in the world.

Even if Phil had won this championship I doubt they would have put a plaque in the rough.

A little birdie tweeted to me that the US Open will return to Merion in 2030 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bobby Jones' Grand Slam.

There is a plaque beside the 11th green where Jones won the 1930 Amateur and completed the Grand Slam.

Really cool that there is something different than a flagstick. It would be cool to see the US Open with unique stick toppers at each venue.

Phil gave this away multiple times on both the front and back 9. Then, once he was trailing, that birdie putt at 16 was his only realistic chance to catch back up, and in typical Phil fashion it caught the lip and missed.
This was an amazing course set-up at Merion, this is what a US Open is supposed to be about, the supreme test of driving accuracy and pure nerves in the game, with narrow fairways, thick rough, and fast greens surrounded by cabbage and sand.

Phil's won 5 majors and he could have won 10. Would you change the way he plays? I wouldn't! The fans love him because he gets you excited about the game. Not many manage that - Palmer, Ballesteros, Norman, Daly, Tiger..

@@austi16 an image of the winner isn't giving away the details of how it played out. There is a DVD for the championship called "A Rose Blooms at Merion 2013 US Open". @TheMrLandon I understand that, but literally two days ago during the final round broadcast of the Charles Schwab Challenge when Justin Rose was in contention they mentioned he's a U.S. Open champion.
