  • Australia vs USA, in the UK! We know you've been waiting for this one. I finally compare the ‪@furiousdriving‬ Ford Crown Vic with my Ford AU Fairmont. In this video, I walk around the car with Matt, who takes me through the history and details of this Detective-spec Police Interceptor. Did someone say V8?

A nice example of a police interdeptor.
I live near Beachwood Ohio so yes, it was exposed to a lot of road salt...and pot holes. In that town, most of the miles were likely to the local donut shop.

Body-on-frame vehicles are still common here in America. All of our pickup trucks 😅 P.S. when "civilian" sales were discontinued for the Crown Victoria (2003), a major chassis change was that the rear shock absorbers were moved from outside the frame to the inside (which improves the handling, at the expense of ride quality and maintenance). Prior to 2003, an individual could walk into a Ford dealership and buy a Crown Victoria (as long as it wasn't the Police Interceptor model). There was also a Mercury variant, the Mercury Grand Marquis. And there was a limited production high performance version of the Grand Marquis called the Marauder (worth a lot of coin today!).

Most of the Crown Vic taxis in NYC were special long-wheelbase models, so even with the barrier they still had adequate rear seat legroom. But needless to say, rear seat passengers of the police cars were not afforded such luxury. Did Mr. Furious hold your head down as you climbed in the back, as the cops do?

    • @Papa7Bravo
      @Papa7Bravo 2 роки тому +1

I found that with the partition leg room is still good, saying that though the one i have doesn't go all the way down so your feet can go under the front seats if you want but leg room really hasn't dissapeared at all, it's just weird having the screen there in front of you.

I was a fleet services mechanic for a large U.S. city for 40 years, and worked on millions (only a slight exaggeration there) of Crown Vics. I started driving them about 25 years ago, and haven't owned any other kind of cars since. I now have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with only 47K miles on it. Like new. Will likely last me the rest of my life. These are 500K mile cars if taken care of. Same as a civilian Crown Vic. The P71 is actually NOT the one you want. I have driven both, and the P71 has a much rougher ride, due to it's suspension designed for handling, and due to a much lower rear end ratio, the engine runs a lot faster at any given speed, burning more gas and wearing things out faster. Mine has an AOD (automatic overdrive) 4 speed transmission, and will get 30 mpg at 65 mph on the highway with the cruise control on. It rides like you're floating on air. And it's big. I'm 6' 240, and I like a big car. I especially like the V8 engine, rear wheel drive, solid rear axle, and body on frame construction. For a Crown Vic/Grand Marquis (again, same car) you want a 2003-2011. They made some significant improvements in 2003. They went to a rack and pinion steering setup, and the front end is built stronger than some trucks. These things are tanks. Mine is an Arizona car, never seen rain, much less salt. Zero rust. You do need to be careful about getting a white one. From the very beginning the white paint was defective, and began peeling off in huge sheets after a few years. And they can't be repainted without removing ALL the original defective paint. All other colors are ok.

A lot of these vehicles are still in service as taxis. One, heading south of me, has hundreds of these parked up for years!
Even its twin, the Mercury Grand Marquis, are still on the road because you simply cannot kill them except for rust. They are spacious, comfortable and get reasonable fuel mileage despite its size and weight.

As a testament to how ginormous the rear seat is in the Crown Vic, I have the following story to tell: Back in 2010, me and my then wife was planing to live in LA. We flew in from Spain (her country of origin) and among other things, I brough my mountainbike. To protect my bike, I transported it in the box it was sold in. We had to take a taxi from LAX to the house we were going to rent, that could take all our stuff. First we tried with a minivan (Toyota Sienna or similar) - did not work. The bikebox would not fit. Then we tried a Crown Vic taxi. The box did not fit in the otherwise enormous boot, but if did fit in between the rear and front seats! I had to sit sideways, with my legs on the seats, but hey, I could bring the bike! Amazing!

A note for Matt: the "Panther" goes back way before 78. It was based on the 72-79 Mid-sized 2 door platform. That, in turn, was based on the full-sized 65-68 platform. The amount that can actually move from a 65 Ford Galaxie 500 to a 2010 Crown Victoria us exceedingly small, but the wheel base changed a whole ⅛ of an inch in all those years, and it was how the spindles mount in relation to the wheel arch in the frame.
The boot on the Crown Vic is 21.3 cubic feet with a full spare. The J Hook for the spare goes in the bracket in the middle. P71, P72 (both Police Packages), Performance/Handling as well as Trailer Tow III Package cars all came with full spare tires. In Canada, all 4 packages included Traction Lok limited slip Axel's with Performance Ratio. In the US Traction Lok was a separate option.

I went through a police car phase in the mid eighties. Both of my cars were B-body big block Mopars. I had a slicktop gold 77 Plymouth Fury (440) and a former county 77 Dodge Monaco (400). Back then I thought they were the last fast Mopars we would ever have. They were much faster than the police cars of the day. Thanks to both of you for the video. Cheers.

Slight note is the Mercury Marauder is the high performance one. So it's a 4v and very sought after as it's 300 bhp and the others are between 220-240 depending on the year. The Mercury Grand Marquis is the 2v

The fire system on the rear of those Fords came about because several instances of those cars catching fire because of rear wrecks ! One of our officers here in Phoenix Az was severly burned in one of those wrecks . His name is Jason Schechterle, he was a strong reason Ford had to fix those cars. Look for him online and see his story about the car and him. Tell the man that owns the car also. There are some good stories about him and show the car he was burned in.

There were a tremendous amount of serving officers that DEEPLY protested the change away from the Crown Victoria as the duty vehicles. Now, they have gone to SUV body frames mostly.I find the Fairmont AU much more exotic, as the N.American Fairmont could hardly get out of their own way, when in production, until 1983, under powered under specified, unless the came with the 5.0 liter engine (standard engine was a 2.3 liter carbonated model) and rusted while you watched.

Similar Taxi story with Falcons in Australia. The go to cars for taxis from about 1975 until production ceased in 2016. Almost always running on LPG and running for well over a million kilometres.
The importance of LPG in Australia to keep running costs down had Ford make factory LPG models for sale to the public as well even with the sporty XR6 models. LPG models now sought after for the stronger connecting rods.

The road test I had hoped you would do but never thought it would happen.
BTW, the owner of the Crown Victoria should have narrowed his search to 2003 models, or NEWER. In 2003 the front chassis was strengthened making for a better driving/steering car. Unfortunately, even among the " whales " some years are better than others. If it hasn't been fixed already, this 2001 model has the part plastic intake manifold that eventually leaks. Not that it's needed, but the later (2003 and newer) models have a tachometer.

American Law Enforcement vehicles cruising in the UK...love it! I'm sure the fuel consumption hurts when fuel is roughly £1.47 per liter, give or take, but Crown Vic's ride so well and look cool.

@@HubNut It's getting on for €1.90 here in Tallinn, really glad I don't drive anymore. Free bus, Trolley, or Tram for me now and has been since 2015 for residents.

Full size Fords from 1973 were even bigger, but not much more room if any in the inside.

I find these type of cars so much more interesting than modern day motors , however I am picking up my 2018 focus on Friday cant wait , still I want a second car was thinking about a rover 400 or a 75 or maybe a vauxhall cavalier , when I was growing up In the 90s we always had a rover or cavalier as the family car , I know rovers get a bit of abuse but I have a soft spot for them same with the cavalier
