This scene was so poignant, it helped me understand that _true_ communication between beings was less about _words_ and more about making _feelings_ and _intentions_ known. A pertinent lesson for an 11 year old boy to remember, and have tried to live by 30 years later.

Alright, I'll make it a trifecta; I was 13 years old. I'll never forget because the original air date was on my birthday. This episode truly made me understand how shared adversity can make friends from peoples of starkly different walks.

I think I really understood things better when I saw a guy that really wanted a cold 🍺 🍻 beer, but he had no money, and I was 9 years old, and slipped him a twenty when nobody was looking, and I could feel his gratitude.

I like that the monster itself is almost ignored by everyone. "Yeah, there's an interdimensional killing machine down there on that planet, nobody knows why, but it's occasionally useful for bonding rituals." The universe is a strange place.
Wait, perfect strangers dropped on a unidentified planet and must fight the beast.. Sounds kinda like the exact plot for 'The Predators' right!?

Man, those tamarian ships would have been useful against the dominion. Taking out a galaxy class shields with one salvo while taking no damage whatsoever.
@Yaldabaoth -- Yeah that Tamarian ship was bad ass. The Tamarians were probably one of the groups the Dominion made a not aggression pact with.

Yep. The also used that same Tamarian warship model on several DS9 episodes too.
"Sokath! His eyes open!" The way the Tamarian delivers this line, and sounds joyous I take his meaning to be something akin to "He understands!!", happy that Picard has a semblance of understanding in how the Tamarians communicate.
What he gets told next is not so joyous.
Kinda religious-cultish. 'He speaks our history, he is initiated now. We won him over.'

That is exactly what it means. Their phrases have a very general meaning and require context to make sense.
"Xinda, his face black, his eyes red" - Anger in battle, pain.
"The river Temarc, in winter." - Stillness or silence.
"Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra" - Cooperation between different people.
"Darmok and Jalad on the ocean" - Two people being stranded together.
"Sokath, his eyes open." - Understanding.
"The beast of Tenagra" - A dangerous obstacle.
"Uzani, his army." - A battle strategy.
"Shaka, when the walls fell." - Failure.
"Picard and Dathon, at El-Adrel" - First contact between alien races.
"Mirab, with sails unfurled" - Travelling.
"Temba, his arms open." - Offering a gift.
"Temba, at rest" - Accepting or declining a gift.
To offer a full translation of the conversation:
"You have attacked us, and we will fight back if we must!"
"Quiet! I demand that you be silent!"
"Did you...?"
"Cooperate? Yes. We were stranded on the planet below."
"He understands us!"
"We faced a powerful foe. We attempted a strategy to defeat it, but your captain died in the attempt."
"We will remember this first meeting between our people."
"I'd like you to have his knife back."
"You may keep it."
Something I've realized about the Tamarian language is that communicating through metaphor is the same as communicating via meme. Once I realized this I started making up my own Tamarian phrases. A favourite example... Phillip J Fry, his eyes squinted.
Pikachu, his mouth open!
Boromir, at the Council.
Leeroy Jenkins, his fist closed!

This really is one of the best episodes.
One of the best episodes of the entire Star Trek series, not just TNG. Rivaled only with "The Inner Light" (which will be screened later in Season 5)
I've watched The Inner Light several times and yet on my most recent viewing it got me like it had never got me before. I must be getting old and soft.

@@TheZetaKai While this is a common film trope, it was so blunt that I assume the Tamarians had some suppression going on, or maybe an energetic boost to compensate for the damage.
It speaks volumes about this series that the most badass scene of the episode is daddy Picard walking onto the bridge.

I forgot that he changed the metaphor to Picard and dathan to emphasize the importance of what happened between our two species that day, and now I’m over here trying to choke back tears and stuff. We need more sci-fi like this.
he didn't change a metaphor, they adopted a new one. "picard and Dathon at el-adrel" just means "successful first contact"

@@Tosslehoffe I always took it to mean that Picard and Dathon's story had become part of their legendarium, that those two were now regarded in the same way that Sokath and Temba were.
Picard is such a statesman.
I always had trouble keeping up with Picard's exchange with the Tamarian First Officer starting at 2:52. For anyone else that had a problem with it here's a rough translation (this should at least be in the ballpark):
Tamarian First Officer: We're very angry at you!
Picard: We seek to stop fighting! We want peace. (???)
TFO: What happened down on the planet?
Picard: Your Captain and I stood together against the beast down on the planet.
TFO: He understands our language now!
Picard: We fought the beast together, we had a plan to be him...but we failed. Your captain is dead.
TFO: (Expresses sorrow/ritualistic honor gestures along with other Tamarian crew)
Picard: I offer you your Captain's book.
TFO: (signals to crewman to beam it over)
TFO: Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel fighting together against a terrible beast, finding common ground, and humans and Tamarians finally being able to communicate for the first time; we will remember this day in our legends. (Turns to crew) Alright, it's time to go.
Picard: I offer the Captain's knife that he gave me to fight the beast with.
TFO: No, you keep it.
(Power comes back on on Enterprise)
TFO: (Motions to close channel, channel closes)
Picard just killed the captain and took his book and knife.
I remember when this 1st aired. My late father was very intrigued by this race & speculated they would become a bigger part in the show. Even though they didn't, when one made an appearance on Lower Decks it made me think of him. Every time I see this episode it makes me think of him. It's also the 1st time we see the Captain's jacket but the last time it had leather shoulders - the remainder of the times we see it has wool shoulders. The whole point of the jacket was Patrick Stewart wanted a more comfortable uniform he could take on and off easily when he got too hot.

Picard's very first Playmates action figure sported that jacket and shirt... only without the midriff rip.
It would have been great if they gave this race/speices more attention on TNG (or DS9).
It’s weird about losing your dad, isn’t it? The things he loved suddenly make a bigger impact on you. Couldn’t stand half of my dad’s favorite music until I lost him, and now most of that is in my own most favorite songs. I’m glad this stuck out to you and him. I feel like little things from your memories of what impacted him end up impacting you. I try to stress this to my kids once in a while, so maybe this thing I say might be helpful if I say it here? “When you lose someone you love, the most important thing is to remember the good things they taught you, and live the lessons you learned. Eventually you’ll pass those same lessons on to another, and maybe one day they’ll do the same. In this way, the best parts of that person you loved will live on forever. Do this, and not only will you ensure that their life wasn’t wasted, but also your own.”
Not only one of the best Star Trek episodes, but one of the best examples of what makes science fiction great!

Putting Riker and Worf in charge of the Enterprise in a tense diplomatic situation only results in more conflict with the Tamarians because of their tendencies to use aggressive, war-like tactics. It's good that the philosopher-captain Picard was able to come in time and use his newly acquired knowledge about the Tamarian language to cool down the situation.

@zerrodefex...Riker had no clue what they were saying to him and definitely the Tamarians hadn't mastered the English language. Knowing "Tamok and Gilead on the ocean" might have helped Riker.

my anthro teacher had the class watch this episode in class when we were discussing language. everyone was like "oh this is interesting" and im in the back like "watch this part lol"
I still can't believe such an intelligent episode of television was ever created.
In college (which was around the time this episode first aired) me and 3 of my friends who were fanatically into TNG at the time used these various phrases in our own conversations when applicable. 'Shaka when the walls fell!' was the most oft-used. But various uses of 'X and Y at Tanagrah' and 'on the ocean' were often used as well. Reciting 'Gilgamesh, a king', was a frequent ritual.
We need more people like Picard in this world.

Fantastic episode. It's not just about the novelty (nor the workabilty) of a race that speaks in metaphors but in the mutual desire to find the commonality between the two cultures with seemingly little in common.

everytime I watch this episode I cry. the desperation to communicate, the deadly risk, friendship, the sacrifice. it's a deep love story in a single episode. crying again today.

In a way, a close group of friends speak in a similar manner sometimes. If I told the internet, "John's gloves in the garage. Greg's rough day at work. Steve forgot his umbrella." it would probably not make much sense, or at least not the sort of sense I meant. But if I said this to my friends, they'd pretty quickly get that someone got drunk, fell in a creek, and got sick from being soaked. And yes, it's difficult when there's an activity with friends of friends because those outside the group have no idea what we're talking about.
Look at how we communicate with memes in words and images, it's no different than this situation.
Always wondered why Riker called Red Alert after the fact they initiated combat.
Sure could've used those guys help during The Dominion War.
I know. It's sad the Tamarians were never seen and mentioned again in TNG and other 'classic-Trek' series. With their firepower, they would've easily beaten the Jem'Hadar, Cardassians, and Romulans w/no problem. Only recently in the "Lower Deck" series we got another Tamarian character appeared - assuming you accept "Lower Deck" as part of the 'classic-Trek' canon, that is.

Why can't we have Star Trek written like this again?
Most TNG- writers & producers have moved on to other sci-fi series - Ron Moore to BSG, Brannon Braga & Andre Bormanis to "The Orville," etc. Most writers recruited as part of 'Kurtzman-Trek' are not veterans of TNG and other 1980s-90s Trek series, hence you see the difference in how the Trek-verse was projected in the 'classic/Roddenberry-influenced' and 'Kurtzman' era easily :(
Because most mainstream entertainment in the US right now is made for children by those with the mentality of children.

What an amazing scene, the writer(s) of this episode are waaaaay under appreciated.
“Picard and Dathon at El-adrel” = Understanding.
They already got one for that, the 'his eyes open' line. There would likely be a unique property assigned to it. As we have several words for almost but not exactly the same thing.
No two encounters are identical, and by acknowledging the differences that make them unique, a new way of thinking is created.
One of my all-time favorite episodes.
This episode made me cry.
Peace, communication and understanding. What this world sorely needs.
Phasers, their positions fixed. Trekkies, their sanity saved.
Ya know, I've always wondered how in Star Trek they can get a lock on something and beam it. I can understand beaming life forms, that's easy. But to essentially "snipe" beam something out of someone's hand on another ship, is an entirely different story. :)
It's the scanners that make it possible. Being able to scan and record something that thoroughly is the real wonder. "Beaming" is just the destruction and re-creation of the object.
Just don't take the hand with it.

Why? Seems like merely a little more focus. It's actually strange if Federation beaming cannot do that. Considering what fancy things they can do with their filters and buffers and all.
Still one of the best ever episodes of Trek, and I'll give Lower Decks all the credit it deserves and then some for showing that Dathon's sacrifice was not in vain. :-)

@@armand531 In Season 2 the new security chief is a Tamarian, he’s a recurring character from then on. They even managed to fully translate everything. Kayshon is a fun addition to the cast
You know watching this for the umpteenth time I'm only just now realizing the way the first officer reacted to the Captain's log might give us a clue about how they communicated. He looked at it and recited the title of a new story. Maybe that was the significance of Dathon's log. All their stories and maybe all their complex communication is written. They use titles, settings, and characters as shorthand
Yep, and that both Dathon and Picard will always be part of the Tamarian's language now, as an example of what happened in their situation.
I watched this the night it was broadcast. I cried like a baby at the end. This is the perfection of science fiction.
"Star Trek TNG: Darmok" or for Captain Picard: "The one where I learn to communicate with a meme-speaking alien race!!"
I love how the viewer also gained enough knowledge to understand basically all the dialogue after Picard gets beamed back up.
This episode and the Tamarian's language always fascinates me when looking at our own society and how we communicate, particularly now when we use memes and references to popular media so often.

The key is that it was not 'mere' communication. The Tamarians were demonstrating the essence of their value system.
Basically, as one likely aspect: _Don't tell me, show me. ... I want to know whether we can work together, so we have to try to work together._
Sometimes it needs dire situation before one understands another....

I always loved this scene. So amazingly done. It made you feel like you were actually there and this was important to have happen. The reactions and emotional connection was incredible.
And now thanks to Dathon's sacrifice, Kayshon became a Starfleet officer.
Kind of slow on the red alert there Riker. I'm sure all of the civilians appreciated the unexpected shaking.

It’s in Bronson Canyon, around the corner from the mining pit that has the Batcave.
A zillion films and tv shows have filmed there. Even episodes of TJ Hooker with William Shatner.
At 1:10 when the creature blinks into sight, on the left, way back is a big green hill. That hill, has the Hollywood Sign on it. They cropped the shot , just to the right of the sign. Behind Picard, over the hill, is all of LA, right there.
I’d say it was filmed in the summer. Because all of those plants on the ground are dead and dried up. In the spring, they are green , and have little yellow flowers on top.
I know episodes like Best of Both Worlds and The Inner Light are quintessential GOATs of Star Trek TNG, but Darmok I believe is what truly defines the core meaning behind Star Trek itself. Seeking out new life and civilizations (encountering an alien species with a language they couldn't understand), and boldly going where no one has gone before (going beyond to understand that species and become their allies).
This gives me chills. And now, to bed.
i remember the phaser blasts coming out of the forward torpedo launcher in the original of this scene, they must of fixed it for the bluray release..

Watching this helps me understand the communications from the Creator in the Bible. Similar methods are used there. Stories of how various people in the past related and had experiences with the Creator and with one another helps us understand concepts of al kinds of topics. David and Goliath for example, or the Prodigal Son in the New Testament, teach a whole host of lessons told in life-story forms.
I just.. I gotta know, where'd the notepad come from? He certainly wasn't holding it during battle, and it's not like a big metal square would fit in a pocket, even if those suits *have* pockets.
It was flat enough that we can assume he put it in/under his jacket.
In fact, that might be a or one reason why they let him wear that jacket for this episode.
It is also odd how he would suddenly start wearing it during his captain duties and then happen to get beamed down on a planet for days and coerced into survival mode.
I am a huge Star Trek fan this is the one episode that made my brain hurt after watching it trying to figure out what they were talking about until the end when it finally cleared up but it was really hard to understand but it was an awesome episode

I wonder how this language could work. If I'd say "Christ on the height of Golgotha" you'd probably understand that I want to say "Sacrifice". Or maybe "Torture"? In any way you understand because you know the story. But how would you learn about the story in the first place as a child, if you have no words to tell it other than via references to even earlier stories, which you can't tell because you have no words other than even... you get the point.

The reverse of us. We learn short phrases as kids. The Cat sat on the mat. (Could mean to rest also) then get more verbose. I'd imagine kids in Tamarian get read the story of Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra to understand the meaning of the phrase. It's not just metaphor but also idioms. Like kill two birds with one stone doesn't literally mean to go and kill two birds but it means to achieve two goals with one action.
For a while I tried using "Shaka, when the walls fell" as a cuss whenever I messed something up or like stubbed my toe or something. But no one around me would get the reference, so I stopped using it. I guess that's the appropriate result of speaking Tamarian.

The acting captain of the other vessel better have gone on to do great things in any other fiction he appeared in.
He literally was surprise-attacked by the the USS Enterprise and her FULL CREW, save for Picard himself, and he could have easily destroyed them if Picard hadn't arrived.
Even Picard would think that his command of the ship during that crisis was commendable.
Even funnier when you realize the original captain is Paul Winfield from Wrath of Khan.

They are matching their maneuvers? Yeah, I guess the Enterprise was flying at 0% impulse and the Tamarians did the same. No wonder they can keep up.
What I find a bit strange is that they would still want to maintain their suppression field after their captain has died, almost as if they wanted Picard to either kill it or be killed, too. ... Maybe as a kind of pact of equals? Diplomatic negotiation where you are willing to die for the other and expect the same in return to have good relations?
But then it was strongly indicated that they actually didn't know. ... What orders did they have? I wonder. How else was this gonna end?
Generally this appears to be a diplomacy that doesn't value words much, but wants to know truth through testing someone, to show when someone is serious.
It is really beautiful how they included Picard in their history. And that can also be seen as a first big stepping stone for understanding their ways.

I know it was a technical error on the part of the studio but in the original scene, firing the phasers from the photon torpedo bay looked way cooler and more powerful...
