Thanks for the love
It is not just raw talent. She has spoken about how she learned to growl. Her inspiration came from a band called Otep. She said her first growls were at passing cars or in a pillow and how she hated that her growl sounded too female. It took her years to learn how to do that.
She practise for 15 years to both sing and growl like this....it's not the same being in a band just growling or just singing but doing both like she does takes aloot of practise and of course talent
I'll just leave it here

She's both. She's possessed with talent.
She's both, plus she has 2 vocal growl tracks superposed to add that depth. Her growl is still amazing, but this is not what she actually sounds like.
@@Theodolphe that is actually very close to what she sounds like, I have seen them live on two different occasions. She sounds just as good live as she does in the video.
talent isn't real, hard work and dedication to do what you love is
@@deminybs "Natural aptitude or skill." Talent is very real. Some people do excel in ways that others cannot, and ultimately, with a little luck, become very successful. Athleticism is literally evident in your most successful athletes. This isn't to say that "Hard work," (which in and of itself is exceedingly subjective) or persistence and continued practice, isn't required in order to hone or maintain a specific skill set. This also does not negate outliers who defy the odds and are able to overcome deficiencies that would otherwise prove natural inhibitors to specific goals. Simply put, I disagree, and stand by my original statement that Tatiana does indeed have talent.

Female metal vocalists that can growl/scream aren't that rare, but, Tatiana's growls are SO low, and, her cleans are so beautiful. She's a rare talent, and, of course, the rest of the band are AMAZING!
Look up the band Aephanemer. For the longest time, I thought the vocalist was a male. But after seeing a music video for them, I was shocked when I saw a female growling like that. Great band
Female vocalists who can pull of a vocal fry like that are insanely rare.
Entheos (Chaney Crabb)
Couldn't have said it better myself!
It also has to do with her inner facial structure and her sinus cavities to be able to produce such a low gutteral
I feel I need to correct Tara here! Actually vocal fry the vocal cords do NOT connect which is why, if done correctly, it doesn't destroy your voice. Using proper vocal fry you should need no rest, false cord screamers may need rest but vocal fry done right is almost 100% safe! A University study was done using a laryngoscope to see why metal singers don't destroy their voice over time doing this. They found the 'vocal folds' do NOT slap together, or make contact in any way, which is why it doesn't cause damage when done correctly! False chord 'screaming' on the other hand is usually very destructive over time! The vocal fry is an open articulation which is why it produces lower notes whereas false cord is a constricted articulation which is why it produces higher notes!
Good explanation my friend. You are also not projecting from your throat, your air should come your chest. It can mess up your voice if you project straight from your throat.
@@justinrennick9503 Exactly because the only way to project from the throat, which the huge majority of false chord screamers do everything constricts onto itself and as the air flaps the constricted vocal cords they slap against each other causing swelling and leads to likely formation of nodules and/or scar tissue (can't think of his name- the guy from The Used destroys his throat)! It can also, over time, cause paralysis of vocal cords. Fry vocals are always misrepresented as screamers, they are not!
False chord=screamer
Fry vocal=geowler
@@justinrennick9503 Dr. Izdebski goes on to explain that by using a very, very high-speed camera (16,000 frames per second - by way of contrast, note that a movie is traditionally only 24 frames per second) placed inside a singer’s throat, he was able to determine that the vocal cords of your average metal frontman or woman never collide, which is how damage to those cords is normally created:
“The images that we recorded clearly show that it’s produced predominately, predominately by structures above the glottis. So, the vocal folds do open and vibrate but actually don’t collide, and the entire sick area above - aryepiglottic folds, arachnoids, epiglottis - everything claps and dances, basically, and creates vibrations and creates acoustic orchestration… It’s that the area above [that’s] very loose and the air turbulence that comes through. The air that comes through produces turbulence, and the turbulence produces the sound.”
@@Axe_Slinger Very informative. Thank you for sharing
Great info
No dear Tara, this is not produced by exaggerated fry. That would be very unhealthy indeed and while it can be done and it is done, it appears only sparsely for coloring, in no case as a permanent technique. This is done by completely opening up the larynx, pushing it way down, then adding a serious amount of pressure from the diaphragm while in the same time closing the false vocal cords. And of course it takes practice.
My false chords pretty all come from the diaphragm. I can make myself lightheaded if I do it hard enough but my throat feels none of it
Jinjer fans will never warn you about the bipolar singing... we want a raw honest reaction

@@dougarnold7955 i don’t know actually lol. What i meant was that a lot of people try to understand that pisces energy, as i have heavy pisces energy within me as well. And it is considered the most confusing and dual sign. Because the symbol for pisces are the two fishes going in opposite directions. Yin/yang, light and dark, masculine/feminine. Tatiana the singer is actually a Pisces as well. And the fact that she sings softly and relaxed as well as the gutteral, growl, and scream is exactly what she was trying to portray of the duality of Pisces. We tend to act in opposite spectrums.
Yeah but there are a ton of singers out there that don't do it right and blow their voice out.

One of the things that annoys me about people and metal is that they just disregard the growl vocals as evil or angry. There is so much depth to many metal vocalists.
yeah man like for someone who's a vocal coach I thought they would know how to truly appreciate all aspects of the human voice

What I love most here is the dichotomy of the song. It is called Pisces. The Twin Fish. Bipolar indeed. Not only do the lyrics tell of the dual nature, but her performance does as well, siding from melodic to fry with such easy freedom.
Thank you, the two emotional natures of the fish in the water, up in the surface and down in the depths. It's very esoteric and wonderfully executed.

Bewilderment of Eden To digress, the style of vocalization is irrelevant towards expressing the duality of the song and its lyrics. I used the term “fry” because, to those without vocal training, it is the term they will most likely recognize.

@@Tarasimonstudios I highly encourage you to revisit Jinjer. Check out "Teacher Teacher" or "Who Is Gonna Be The One" (Live) in particular. Look deeper into the meaning of the songs that they are playing, and how they inform the performance. Pisces is all about the characteristics of the astrological sign, one of the biggest pieces being duality, so the clear switching back and forth is HIGHLY informed by the content of the lyrics.
I love the fact that you did this in the first place, but just tapping the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rock and metal singing, especially with female vocalists, is in my humble opinion, doing a disservice to a large percentage of the vocal music that is out there. The growl is not demonic or evil. In progressive metal, it denotes a change in emotion or the darkness within someone warring with their light half; the duality that lies within us all, if you will. It's meant to sound disturbing because not unlike fire alarms or sirens, it's a sonic cry for help and/or understanding.
Yes, the growl represents the dark element of duality. Light and darnkness, good and evil. Of course the growl represents negativity, anger/evil, in contrast to the cleaner vocals.

Second to this! It's intense at times, but never demonic sounding like this. I actually love Jinjer but Nightwish is a nice happy medium. Please react to some Nightwish!
yes yes yes
I want delain reaction
Yes please!!! There is no screaming in this Tara!
Absolutely. Floor Jansen is amazing in everything she does, and that's a great showcase of her abilities.
Omg! That was the cutest reaction ever! Having seen Tati sing live, I can confirm that's she IS that good! Sweet to demonic in perfect transition! Loved your reaction! Made my night 😂😂
There is a warning, it's when they switch to the electric guitar.
The guitars electric throughout the whole song my guy :/
@@GlockGrippa what he means is when the guitar switches to distortion ...thats the warning, and he is correct
Sarge0341 Yeah I know, but what I meant was the clean sound still technically comes from an electric guitar and it’s electric counterparts...
This lady sounds like my mom trying to listen to metal
1:35 that's everyone's reaction. I'm gonna speak for every metalhead, Tatiana (that's her name) is Super talented. We haven't seen a female singer who can growl like that since Angela Gossow quitted from Arch Enemy. She's really talented. She's basically a monster.
The best part of this is that she can perform live as good as in the studio.
Have you never heard of The Agonist? Alyssa White-Gluz. Arch Enemies new vocalist as of like 8 years ago. Alyssa is amazing.
@@KICKBIDENOUTOFOFFICE alissa is better in mixing good growling technique with super nice and dinamic clean vocals(something arch enemy rarely lets her do).Angela had super evil sounding growls and screams(fit the arch enemy feel better than alissas growls). Tatiana surpassed both, and her technique is still getting better with every album. Also arch enemy without women growling would sound like average melodeath band, while Jinjer instrumentaly is still insanely original, and songwriting is not straight forward like in a most of metal, everithing is in place even tho lot of their songs have some unexpected or unusual elements. cant get Perennial out of my head since its release
And she's been doing those growls for a decade with a relentless tour performance schedule. Oh, and she can take her growls way lower than that too (4 minutes into Who Is Gonna Be The One, for example).
I agree with you. And in my opinion Gossow is a way better growler than Alyssa. Also I liked this girl's style but her live performance remains to be seen. But it's cool as in studio vocals.
Fedora wearer.
To me she is representing her song feelings in the change up, she is beautiful in both ways.
Her scream reveals a lot about the song on an emotional scale
Thats true.. and I appreciate that perspective!!
“She’s a little woman, she’s not even butch”. Cracked me up
A bit sexist for me but okay
@@hanahmichele6566 The, "Now she's a girl again" annoyed me a bit.
Pumpkin V Get over it...
@@TheNerdess I think "Now she's a girl again is referring to the fact you very rarely see a woman sing like this. She goes from soft singing to growling. Her remarks basically say anyone who is bigger or butch is unattractive. Her opinion tho.
Pumpkin V agreed but it annoyed me a lot. So judgmental and sexist. She’s very narrow-minded
Just so you know, Jinjer is the band, not the girl.
Dat' Bassist tho...
@@TN_Travesty The whole band is pretty sick, the shock of Tatianna's voice tends to make people miss it first few listens. Pay attention to the drummer, he's not just wrecking the set but his ability to add and fill is incredible.
@@rileyrat13 The whole band is tight. Not my cup of tea, but the talent is undeniable.
Tatiana Shmaylyuk
thanks , i was wondering about that
Oh my God. Your reaction was so great. I mean, I was shocked as well, and I would have thought I was listening to 2 different people if I hadn't seen the video. She's amazing. But your reaction was so hilarious I couldn't focus on the song, because I was rolling. 🤣 I legitimately rewatched your reaction a few times and I've shown several people. Lol Typically, I'm watching for your coaching and instruction, but I honestly can't remember anything you said after the reaction. This is my favorite.
😂🤣😂
Me too!
I am a huge fan of Jinjer and I love this reaction. What a great way to explain the vocal specifics behind the growl!!!
Your reaction to Tatiana screaming the first time was priceless, have to give a like just for that.
Tatiana is a great singer. Now the next one is the vocal beast Floor Jansen of Nightwish. Ghost Love Score live Wacken.
Yes, not nearly as scary. The only thing intimidating about our sweet Valkyrie Queen is she's a raven haired 6 foot tall Danish Woman who sings with a metal version of the cast of the Hobbit ;-)
@@rhettkennedy3507 Floor is Dutch. Not Danish.
The dutch are the only people regularly breeding girls over 2m tall ^^
@@ioanniskostoulas4448 Humblest apologies. I have a condition that mixes up any nationality that starts with a "D". ;-)
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I think it's really a matter of taste. Tarja is like a finely honed sword. Floor is like a Swiss Army Knife. Tarja has the goods on Floor for what she does (Opera), but Floor can sing Opera pretty darn well (even though she said it's not something she studied as much in depth) and she can do rock and metal equally well.
That sounds of being evil is kinda the goal. The fact that she brings that feeling of evil and intense power shows how effective the technique is
Tatiana is an incredible talent and an incredible singer..The band is incredibly tight
Jinjer = The Group's name
Exactly!!! The singer is Tatiana ;-)
@Sebastian Glad I didn't say anything. Some death metal fans get upset if you call it anything but growling. That's what I know it as.
does it really matter what people call it
@@timpecover8600 To some people, yes. It's just like anything else, some people want you to call it what it actually is, not what everyone else is calling it.
@@timpecover8600 Yes, that's why we have words for things. Do you drive a car or a wheelie-thing? We have words to describe what we experience and what's around us.
“This is so disturbing to me!“
Does this lady own a television??
I react the way she does when i am forced to listen to a Top 40 song. I seriously would rather be deaf if i had only pop music.
@@ChuckBeefOG But honey... where are my paaaaaaaants?! *laugh track* Come on, man. You know that everything is awesome...
@@ChuckBeefOG geezuz... top 40... i smashed that radio at work because of all that repetitive junk they feed society.
Pulled the car to the front door, jammed a Slayer CD in the disc changer and fullblasted that thing until it was time to fo home. At that point in time, Jinjer hadn't formed yet.
@@ChuckBeefOG Right.
Yeah its disturbing when you are not a metalhead
She abnormal in a Beautiful way. I learned how too appreciate that approach of singing. The most impressive is how easily and quickly transition her voice live in key and dancing all over the stage. Also her band is one of the tightest in the game.
My favourite part of the video is at 1:34 😂 i love your reaction ! And i love the fact that you never watch videos on beforehand, your reaction is pure every time.
Both the song and your explanation how the singer does it, fills me with emotions.
Kudos to whoever got her to watch this. Priceless.
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Wacken
Even the poet and the pendulum live with Floor
i concur
Even She Is My Sin- Live from Wacken as well!
It’s so cool watch the people’s reactions listening to Nightwish
I've been requesting this for weeks.
Having a pretty good experience with growling, we can see that her throat stays relaxed the whole time when she has that possessed voice. Back in my early days of growling i could get sore in a matter of second. I realised it surely wasnt the right way to do it. Some of my favourite bands were talking just fine in between songs.
When I learned it properly I could go a long time ''screaming'' without even bruising my voice. To finish I would advise to anyone who'd love to learn to growl, If it feels tight in your throat you are doing something wrong with it.
And this is why it's fun to watch the watcher.
Hahahaha! The Jinjer army strikes again! Great reaction. I can watch these all day. The song is great, the band is great. All hail the Queen!
"I'm here to review her vocals..."
"WOAH! That's alot of hard ware on her face..."
😂🤣😂
I've watched a lot of your reactions and they are always very informative. I'm definitely a fan of your channel. One of these days I'll take the dive and start working on singing again...
I know the extreme vocals aren't your thing, but I do like that you still give respect where it's due. I think this reaction was my first exposure to Jinjer and at first I was a bit not sure what to do with them as I was never into growls and screaming in vocals. But I love her voice and the band is just awesome (not to mention just really cool down to earth people in general). But after seeing your reaction and many other vocal coaches/musicians react to Jinjer, I've learn to really appreciate the skill and talent it takes to do what she does. She is crazy talented. I've fallen complexly in love with this band (more like I'm obsessed now ). They are my favorite band and I don't listen to metal typically. I didn't comment back at the time I watched this as I'm typically quiet online.
I know the growling and screams aren't your thing, but I'm interested in hearing your take on some of their other music and Tatiana's vocals showcased in some other songs. I love this song, but compared to their other songs, it doesn't showcase her full range as much. She is self taught (some brief formal training) and she taught herself how to growl/scream over a 4 year period of time (it's her own technique - she says she can't explain it very well - all her attempts at learning the normal ways didn't work for her). They have been touring for 10 years now and they had 152 shows in one year once. So whatever her technique is, it seems to barely affect her clean vocals. It's pretty darn amazing how fast she can switch between clean and extreme vocals.
The whole band is extremely talented and they draw on many different genres (jazz, reggae, nu metal, progressive rock/metal, etc.). They have some songs that don't have as much extreme vocals; Bad Water (official live video) is a cool bluesy groove rock song (no extreme vocals) has a bit of Alice in Chains vibe to it, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (intro and outro to their King of Everything LP - just audio videos available - no extreme vocals), I speak Astronomy (official video) showcases her range really well and is definitely a different vibe than this one. It has two shorter sections of extreme vocals but changes from fast to slow (very dynamic song). Perennial (Live at Wacken) is awesome - great example of her switching between the vocals. It has the growls but she also has some amazing soaring vocals in that one as well. Teacher, Teacher is awesome - another very different song... a bit rapish/hip hop vibe at the start. Really cool. Also, they have a One Take Vocal of their song Judgement (&Punishment) - great video to see her technique up close and that switches up a lot.
SHE IS SUPER TALENTED!!!Tati has gone through so much to get to us, and I STILL get goosebumps when I listen to this song! It just blows my arce away!
You know what would be more up your alley? Nightwish, all three of their singers are amazing female vocalists. "Phantom of the Opera" with Tarja Turunen, "Ghost Love Score" with Floor Jansen, and "The poet and the Pendulum" with Anette Olzon. You'll love those three.
Floor! "Ghost Love Score" Awesome voice and the way she smiles at the audience makes me melt. She's my favorite Operatic Rock Valkyrie ;-)
dont forget marco....
Big yes!
I'm not sure about that. I always loved Tarja (and stopped loving Nightwish when she left), but I still honestly think all the singers are more of average talent.
I was going to say the same thing!
The notice is actually quite clear, it’s when the guitar distortion comes in. Even you yourself started to lean back and cringe a bit because you subconsciously felt it coming XD.
Tucker Drums Right?? I was about to comment about this.
However, when she was about to feel it, the scream already reached her in supernatural speed.
We don’t WANT you to prepare for it. The fun is watching you see/hear it for the first time. 😱
Hi Tara,
Wonderful reaction/review!
I am glad that no one forewarned you, as your reaction is raw and pure.
It is probably the same reaction I had watching this first time round.
