      It is not just raw talent. She has spoken about how she learned to growl. Her inspiration came from a band called Otep. She said her first growls were at passing cars or in a pillow and how she hated that her growl sounded too female. It took her years to learn how to do that.

Athleticism is literally evident in your most successful athletes. This isn't to say that "Hard work," (which in and of itself is exceedingly subjective) or persistence and continued practice, isn't required in order to hone or maintain a specific skill set. • @Axe_Slinger
    @Axe_Slinger 4 роки тому +469

    I feel I need to correct Tara here! Actually vocal fry the vocal cords do NOT connect which is why, if done correctly, it doesn't destroy your voice. Using proper vocal fry you should need no rest, false cord screamers may need rest but vocal fry done right is almost 100% safe! A University study was done using a laryngoscope to see why metal singers don't destroy their voice over time doing this. They found the 'vocal folds' do NOT slap together, or make contact in any way, which is why it doesn't cause damage when done correctly! False chord 'screaming' on the other hand is usually very destructive over time! The vocal fry is an open articulation which is why it produces lower notes whereas false cord is a constricted articulation which is why it produces higher notes!

    • @justinrennick9503
      @justinrennick9503 4 роки тому +39

      Good explanation my friend. You are also not projecting from your throat, your air should come your chest. It can mess up your voice if you project straight from your throat.

    • @Axe_Slinger
      @Axe_Slinger 4 роки тому +19

      @@justinrennick9503 Exactly because the only way to project from the throat, which the huge majority of false chord screamers do everything constricts onto itself and as the air flaps the constricted vocal cords they slap against each other causing swelling and leads to likely formation of nodules and/or scar tissue (can't think of his name- the guy from The Used destroys his throat)! It can also, over time, cause paralysis of vocal cords. Fry vocals are always misrepresented as screamers, they are not!
      False chord=screamer
      Fry vocal=geowler

    • @Axe_Slinger
      @Axe_Slinger 4 роки тому +21

      @@justinrennick9503 Dr. Izdebski goes on to explain that by using a very, very high-speed camera (16,000 frames per second - by way of contrast, note that a movie is traditionally only 24 frames per second) placed inside a singer’s throat, he was able to determine that the vocal cords of your average metal frontman or woman never collide, which is how damage to those cords is normally created:
      “The images that we recorded clearly show that it’s produced predominately, predominately by structures above the glottis. So, the vocal folds do open and vibrate but actually don’t collide, and the entire sick area above - aryepiglottic folds, arachnoids, epiglottis - everything claps and dances, basically, and creates vibrations and creates acoustic orchestration… It’s that the area above [that’s] very loose and the air turbulence that comes through. The air that comes through produces turbulence, and the turbulence produces the sound.”

    No dear Tara, this is not produced by exaggerated fry. That would be very unhealthy indeed and while it can be done and it is done, it appears only sparsely for coloring, in no case as a permanent technique. This is done by completely opening up the larynx, pushing it way down, then adding a serious amount of pressure from the diaphragm while in the same time closing the false vocal cords. And of course it takes practice.

Look deeper into the meaning of the songs that they are playing, and how they inform the performance. Pisces is all about the characteristics of the astrological sign, one of the biggest pieces being duality, so the clear switching back and forth is HIGHLY informed by the content of the lyrics.
      I love the fact that you did this in the first place, but just tapping the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rock and metal singing, especially with female vocalists, is in my humble opinion, doing a disservice to a large percentage of the vocal music that is out there. I was browsing through your reaction video playlist and I noticed a theme revolving mostly around a lot of melodic and more traditionally clean sounding singers. Nothing wrong with that, at all, but I think that your followers could benefit from some additional vocal styles.

    The growl is not demonic or evil. In progressive metal, it denotes a change in emotion or the darkness within someone warring with their light half; the duality that lies within us all, if you will. It's meant to sound disturbing because not unlike fire alarms or sirens, it's a sonic cry for help and/or understanding.

    • @BC08
      @BC08 4 роки тому +27

      Yes, the growl represents the dark element of duality. Light and darnkness, good and evil. Of course the growl represents negativity, anger/evil, in contrast to the cleaner vocals.

    Having a pretty good experience with growling, we can see that her throat stays relaxed the whole time when she has that possessed voice. Back in my early days of growling i could get sore in a matter of second. I realised it surely wasnt the right way to do it. Some of my favourite bands were talking just fine in between songs.
    When I learned it properly I could go a long time ''screaming'' without even bruising my voice. To finish I would advise to anyone who'd love to learn to growl, If it feels tight in your throat you are doing something wrong with it.

    I've watched a lot of your reactions and they are always very informative. I'm definitely a fan of your channel. One of these days I'll take the dive and start working on singing again...
    I know the extreme vocals aren't your thing, but I do like that you still give respect where it's due. I think this reaction was my first exposure to Jinjer and at first I was a bit not sure what to do with them as I was never into growls and screaming in vocals. But I love her voice and the band is just awesome (not to mention just really cool down to earth people in general). But after seeing your reaction and many other vocal coaches/musicians react to Jinjer, I've learn to really appreciate the skill and talent it takes to do what she does. She is crazy talented. I've fallen complexly in love with this band (more like I'm obsessed now ). They are my favorite band and I don't listen to metal typically. I didn't comment back at the time I watched this as I'm typically quiet online.
    I know the growling and screams aren't your thing, but I'm interested in hearing your take on some of their other music and Tatiana's vocals showcased in some other songs. I love this song, but compared to their other songs, it doesn't showcase her full range as much. She is self taught (some brief formal training) and she taught herself how to growl/scream over a 4 year period of time (it's her own technique - she says she can't explain it very well - all her attempts at learning the normal ways didn't work for her). They have been touring for 10 years now and they had 152 shows in one year once. So whatever her technique is, it seems to barely affect her clean vocals. It's pretty darn amazing how fast she can switch between clean and extreme vocals.
    The whole band is extremely talented and they draw on many different genres (jazz, reggae, nu metal, progressive rock/metal, etc.). They have some songs that don't have as much extreme vocals; Bad Water (official live video) is a cool bluesy groove rock song (no extreme vocals) has a bit of Alice in Chains vibe to it, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (intro and outro to their King of Everything LP - just audio videos available - no extreme vocals), I speak Astronomy (official video) showcases her range really well and is definitely a different vibe than this one. It has two shorter sections of extreme vocals but changes from fast to slow (very dynamic song). Perennial (Live at Wacken) is awesome - great example of her switching between the vocals. It has the growls but she also has some amazing soaring vocals in that one as well. Teacher, Teacher is awesome - another very different song... a bit rapish/hip hop vibe at the start. Really cool. Also, they have a One Take Vocal of their song Judgement (&Punishment) - great video to see her technique up close and that switches up a lot.
