I Love My Little Rooster by Almeda Riddle

- Almeda Riddle (1898-1986) was an American folk singer.
Born and raised in Cleburne County, Arkansas, she learned music from her father, a fiddler and singing teacher. She collected and sang traditional ballads throughout her life, usually unaccompanied. Introduced to a wider public by folklorist John Quincy Wolfe and musicologist Alan Lomax, Riddle recorded extensively, and claimed to be able to perform over 500 songs. She was often known as Granny Riddle.
One of her acapella recordings, "My Little Rooster" appears on the 1997 cult film "Gummo".
John Quincy Wolf recorded Almeda in the 1960's, but I'm not sure if these recordings were ever releases commercially... probably not.... for more info, try here:

she's my granny :) Almeda is my great-great grandma! i wish i wouldve known her :( she dies when my mom was 14... mom loved her
Awe she seems like a heart of gold
You and I might be cousins, She was my great aunt. Almeda was married to my grandmother's brother. We used to go to her farm in Greers Ferry Ar. for family reunions. As a child I went to her house, she had a new tape recorder and was determined to get everybody in her family on tape. I wonder what happened to the tapes? I sat with her under the trees in her backyard on several occasions talking and singing old songs, she was a wonderful woman.
@@michaelbittle676 that's incredible...and those sound like beautiful times....I hope you were able to get in touch with your potential cousin , in this comment section ...
@@matthewzizzo4586 Beautiful memories for me. She lived as a widow with children on a farm with no electricity, no running water, no cell phones or computers, only later had a radio. Only entertainment they had was home made, communication with neighbors and friends was face to face or by letter. After Al Lomax recorded her she was asked to perform and record and she earned enough money to install an indoor bathroom. This type of lifestyle was typical for the area and the times. Very tough, strong and independent people came from rural Arkansas.
@@michaelbittle676 I have no experiences like that (city person)....I'm speechless....in awe... it kind of pains me to think that life was so much more clearly laid out and beautiful.... my family is from New York my father took us all camping upstate Connecticut, once a year.... now I take my family camping .... I would love to be able to live on a river... not too big of a river....but I'm 46 now....dont think it's in the cards 4me.... what about the food? I bet it was unbelievable....but I will believe you , if you tell me ....I promise !

When my sister and I went apple picking, she walked barefoot through the orchard singing this song. It made the day so perfect.
I love these folk songs for that kind of rhythmic walking/working sing-along
Oi, eu sou brasileiro. Não entendo muito bem sua cultura, poderia me dizer o que essa música significa pra você?!
I wanna mustache. dammit! I wanna look like Burt Reynolds!
My daughter's favorite line 🤣🤣
I swear to God I can't forget that line, almost every day is I wanna a mustache dammmmmmmit!
The Gummo soundtrack had so many bangers. Sleep, Bathory, Flesh 'N Bone, Buddy Holly, and Almeda Riddle. A little something for everybody.

So I'm ashamed to say I forgot how much I loved this in Gummo but never looked to see what it was. I'm finally here and I love this version as much as the One in the film. I encourage anyone who loves this song to listen to her other works and fall in love all over again as I did. Thank you kindly for posting this!!!

Hi
i cant be the only person who sang this song before gummo.. I couldn't imagine this being on that movie but they made it work.. wow korine is a genius.
more like one-hit wonder.
LMTR14
Lol, he is still going man... Gummo is a novelty and might seem that way, but he is still directing and doing what he always has.
kids sucked so hard I never would watch another one of his films though
LMTR14 He didn't make Kids. Just wrote it. Larry Clark directed Kids. And it's a fucking masterpiece.
LMTR14 he didn't direct "KIDS" actually. he did write it, but Larry Clark directed it.
I am here from listening to The Chariot. They used this as an intro to one of their songs on tour in 2009. Wonderful!
long live
beautiful and authentic music from the pure Spirit of Miss Almeda Riddle ,may she rest in peace and her music and spirit live on forever

When people ask me how my love life is...
I love my little rooster and my rooster loves me.
I'm gonna cherish that chicken 'neath a green bay tree.
My little rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo,
doodle-doo, doodle-doo.
if i'm gonna play this one more time my gf is gonna kick me out LMAO
My mom sang this to me as a lullaby when I was really young. I'm almost 20 and for some reason it came to me again at 6:30am
i lobe my littlew rooster snc my roosdter love me
Am I the only one who loved Gummo when they were 5? That movie was my life
no... you're not the only one :)
5 ?!?!
What is wrong with you
yesss!!!! Gummo has introduced me to so many special things
Granny Riddle was a classic. So glad I got to know her and collect a couple of songs from her.
Every time I sing this song I have different animals and friends and sounds to sing to it. Awesome.
How fun! I'm definitely gonna try to get some friends to do that with me!
Edit: not try to get some friends. Get my friends to try making up new verses with other animals, lol😆
My Grandma sang this to us on long car rides when we were little and know she sings it to our children along with 'Bury me beneath the willow tree'. My youngest niece has a fever of 103 tonight and moments ago my sister asked me to send her the songs so at this very moment she is sitting at her youngest childs beside playing them to lull her back to sleep. I've have also seen the movie gummo and although it is an interesting film that is probably the last thing some of us think of when hearing Alameda Riddle.
I love this song
I’m almost 50 years old and this will forever be tattooed in my brain. My Great Grandmother always sang it to me on her front porch swing of the log cabin my Great Grandfather built for them. Thank you, to whoever uploaded this. Thank you so very much. (No idea what Gummo is) lol
Gummo!
One of the fondest memories is my grandma singing this.
Gummo soundtrack is quite amazing.
i love my rooster
I've sung a version of this song to my daughter for the last 8 years....still chuckle when i remember where i heard it first.
From my favourite movie !!
Spirit of old America
happy birthday almeda 🥳
This is absolutely legendary😊😊😊!!!
Gummo got this stuck in my head
Although I am a city born type of guy. I love anything country. Country music and country living. Although I am from California, Texas is where it's at. The Beverly Hillbillies should move back!!!
Jay-Z and Alicia fall to their knees in tears when they hear this... There's no competition.
this song stuck in my head after i watched gummo
This one's goin on favorites for sure!!!
I love any song that mentions guinea fowl.
I love my little rooster too!
My mom used to sing this song to me as a child.
This song can go on for like 10 minutes. Working long shifts , I song this song over and over adding so many animals. I also like to switch cherish, with feeding and playing. Gotta play with the pup, who goes bow wow, neath the green berry tree💖
THE CHARIOT BROUGHT ME HERE!
ABOUT TO WATCH GUMMO....THEM SUM PPL FROM ANOTHER PLANET...♡
Heard this during The Chariot's set, n started singin along
My dad played guitar and sang this to me when I was a kid. ♥️
My Dad would sing me this song to get me to sleep when I was really little. I guess its a part of Appalachian heritage
almeda is ozark but the cultures are very similar! :)
Innocent songs that got a sinister aura after a movie:
Hurdy gurdy man : Zodiac
Everyday: We need to talk about Kevin
I love my little rooster: Gummo
More and more: Hills have eyes
Almeda did many other songs that were fantastic. Everyone seems fixated on this one track used in the movie gummo
I love that Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds is automatically the next video when this one ends. They do go hand in hand. I gotta tell you though, she wanted to call the whole thing off. She had a headache but I gave her an aspirin.
Ha.....LOVE THAT MOVIE!!
Gummo introduced meto this song back in 97
This song freaked me out when I heard it in Gummo, I still have no idea why
i love it
Thank you for this!
My baby girl dedicated this song to me. May God bless and be w/my Tati, CusCus, Anya always... Mommy
song does my fucking head in
LOL, so good!!!! I LOVE this lady :DDD
Eu sinceramente não entendo o que essa música significa para aqueles daquela época mas só sei que eu gosto disso. 🇧🇷❤️
É a música dos bichos. Nunca ouviu? O cachorro au au o Pato quac quac a galinha co co
This song is catchy af!
Thanks
Awesome!!!
I’m trying to find more music like this I love it
Love and Respect all the way from Pakistan 💚
LOVE GUMMO LOVE THIS
This song makes me miss the movie Gummo. Too bad I cant watch it again lol its like his other movie Kids....won't watch that again either. Harmony Korrine makes interesting movies....that you only watch once and then tell everyone else to watch it.
my daughter loves this lol
haha, this is the best version ever!
its the fact that she kinda forgets the words that makes it a bit unsetlling
I noticed that towards the end, and it always unsettled me for an odd reason
@JeffBurdette1 , Guinea hen is a bird from Africa now found on farms all over the world.
gummo
My Granany just sent me this. Why do I like this song?
this depresses me
guess so.. 'Gloomy Guy' lol
lol
The thing that ruined it for me was one time I was jammin this song and she mixed the Guinea pig with the hen..the hen is suppose to be 2nd and the guinea doesnt come till later in the song, like after the duck..so Im singing along and she she gets to the pig, right on,but then after the pig she jumps to then hen..seriously!? Its Pig,guinea, duck, hen and then Rooster.. ...why does everybody have to fuck everything up. If she want the hen before the pig then she shouldnt have started it after the Rooster..you cant start the song one way and end it another. Unless she wanted to do like a new wave version where all the animals come in a totally different order, that would be cool. But thats not what happened here. Am I TALKING TO MYSELF??? You know what, just forget it. Im gonna drink a glass of wine with my anxiety meds and depression pills and maybe have 2nds..and just try and let all this go. If thats even possible.
It's not a guinea pig you idiot, it's a guinea bird. Have you ever heard a guinea pig go "pardarack"?
Isn't that cute...
I love you Chloe Sevigny.
I love my heritage of bein souther
Gummo brought me here!
Don't know why, but this song freaks the shit out of me!
I like this song a lot for some reason, especially if you work on a farm, and this song has nothing to do with gummo if you think it does
My scout master used to play this to wake us up. I then looked at the comments and learned that Gummo exists and I have to say that there is something wrong with you if you like it
Ranfren
awesome
GUMMO
Here becasue of Nyen
@TotalNekro
Whatever the hell it is, it goes 'padarack'
guinea
Asked myself this many many times and still have no fucking clue what kind of sound padarack is
@JeffBurdette1 It could also be a guinea hen, those are pretty common on farms in Arkansas as show birds... At least they were when I was a kid and stayed with my great-aunt. The ginnys were the only chickens she wouldn't threaten with a fate in the stock pot if they started pecking at her legs... :)
Nice song ❤🌸❤
These are the nursery rhymes that serial killers had when they were kids.
which serial killers
These? It's a minute single, city boy...
great. now i want to smoke a cigarette over an overpass while wearing bunny ears
The movie Gummo brought me here
