John 17:3 is confusing. The verse is telling us the how we achieve eternal life, and it is by knowing God and Jesus Christ who God has sent. Its not about knowing about God and Jesus Christ, its about KNOWING them. We need to understand that when Jesus asked his disciples who men say that he is, what Peter said to Jesus led Jesus to state that Peter was blessed because he had received revelation from the Father. Revelation from the Father is unforgettable, it defies logic and cannot be argued away. This is part of getting to know the Father. Another way to get to know Jesus is by doing the things that Jesus done, like feeding the hungry, visiting the lonely, helping the sick and afflicted and helping those you see struggling. By doing the things that Jesus would have done when He was on the earth, we get to feel what Jesus felt like when He was doing those things and we get blessed by the Holy Ghost. In this way, feeling the way Jesus felt allows us to feel like Jesus and, therefore, to get to know Him. Just reading a book wond do it. We need to behave like Jesus. We need to strive for perfection. He says, 'be ye therefore perfect like the Father is perfect". An impossible job some may think but its a commandment that we strive toward this goal. We surely won't make it in this life but we will progress faster in the life to come if we are trying here.
