How to biohack your cells to fight cancer - Greg Foot

  • Check out the science of biohacking, where biologists go into a patient’s genetic code and reprogram their immune system to recognize and fight cancer cells.
    --
The human body is made up of about 30 trillion cells that carry a code which has been duplicated over and over for billions of years - with varying degrees of accuracy. So what happens when the system breaks down and the machinery turns on itself, leading to cancer? Greg Foot dives into the science of how biologists are biohacking the human body to try to fix the seemingly unfixable.
Lesson by Greg Foot, directed by Pierangelo Pirak.
Produced for TED-Ed by www.sciencemedia.studio and NIHR University College London Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre.

I'm a molecular biologist and IMO the best thing about this video , obviously aside from the top-notch animation and script, is that it conveyed the important scientific concepts as effectively to a 10-year old as it did to a professional scientific researcher. The consistent use of computer science and robotics analogies all throughout was genius. Absolute great work, TED-Ed!

My aunt’s mom has cancer. They were so excited to celebrate her birthday but she started feeling ill and later found out it was cancer. The doctors have said that there’s nothing left they can do and it honestly breaks my heart. I just hope she makes it for one last Christmas and hopefully a new year. Currently my family is selling food so they can raise some money (not sure whether they started a go fund me though) So this video makes me bittersweet for one it’s amazing that better treatment for cancer is being made and there’s even talk of a possible cure in 10-20 years, however it’s heartbreaking that my aunt’s mom won’t see or receive such treatment 😢 I have met her a few times but it still breaks my heart to know that she’s in pain and that she won’t see her baby granddaughter grow unlike the rest of her older grandchildren. Stay safe everyone and go to the doctor, get checked, do your yearly needed doctor checks. 🙏🏼

How so? Car-t has helped less than 5% of cancers and probably won't get much better numbers without dipping into metabolic therapy to turn "cold" tumors into "hot" tumors. If they just accepted the metabolic therapy they would manage ALL cancers without the huge cost. Maybe they haven't accepted the metabolic therapy because it won't make them money. And Car-t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per patient. But surely they wouldn't deny a highly effective broadly applicable treatment because it won't make lots of money would they?

I was just musing over this as I was studying for immunology. If the body is so adept at recognizing non-self molecules, how can we make a way for the body to recognize malignant 'self' molecules such as cancer?
Beautifully made video. As a fan of animations and cartoons, the visual effects have motivated me to study harder for immunology. Great job as always, TED-Ed!

@@Satwikg_7 I'm afraid halting the shortening of telomeres is just an easy way to develop a lot of cancer. The telomeres have a specific length for a reason, after so many cell divisions chances are high some critical errors slipped in, eventually leading to cells accumulating the necessary traits to classify it as cancerous. It's basically a self-regulating mechanism to prevent old cell lines from duplicating even further because it's very probable the damage to the code has become too high. I'm betting my money on stem cell therapy instead.
