Monolithic Munitions record setting 223 WSSM 40g HV 4700 fps load vaporizes a watermelon like no other. This is a production cartridge with non-lead bullets available at monolithicmunitions.com
Monolithic Munitions presents a new world record, 4700 fps muzzle velocity from a factory cartridge,
Monolithic Munitions loads the mighty .223 Winchester Super Short Magnum with a 40g HV all copper bullet to produce this amazing velocity.
Here is the little demon with the test rifle, The 223 WSSM is short enough to fit in compact rifles including the AR-15
Compared to the 223 Remington, that's a lot more powder.
Now lets see the explosive results, each test compares the 223 WSSM to the 223 Rem with the same 40 HV bullet, only going 1300 fps slower.
A few water bottles for warm up. Wssm first, then 223 rem.
Now let's shoot this unsuspecting watermelon WOW look at that explode, nothing in there, just bullet energy transferred to the target.
One frame at a time, look at the speed of that melon flying apart, in just 4 frames its blown to bits!
Now lets try the 223 Rem on a watermelon.
The Monolithic Munitions 223 Rem with 40g HVs is already devastating at close range, but the 223 WSSM will do the same thing at long range, at 250 yards it is equivalent to the 223 rem at the muzzle.
With the Monolithic Munitions .223 WSSM ammo, a 400 yard point blank range is possible on a 6" vital zone target
But un like fragile bullets, the core continues to penetrate, so you get massive hydraulic shock and deep penetration all in one bullet.
The drive band technology of the 40g Hv bullet eliminates the excessive barrel ware that has plagued super velocity rounds in the past.
    Shooting watermelons sure is fun!
So ask your rifle builder to make you a 223 WSSM today and get your ammo from monolithic munitions

All they had to do is look up what happened to previous high velocity rounds. They knew it would destroy barrels and just tested to see if they could crack 5000fps. P. O. Ackley tried as did likeminded Bill Hembley-Clark with his .17 "Flintstone Super Eyebunger" reaching 4798fps. While you are right that the heat of any powder will still cause erosion over time, I believe that slower burning powders actually cause less erosion than faster ones, at least that's what I've been led to believe from gun magazines when going into the problems with .220 Swift when it was originally introduced with no suitably slow powders that in part (barrel metallurgy was the other) contributed to the reputation of rifles so chambered for having terrible barrel lifespans.

Exactly keepleft! I've reloaded and killed coyotes with a Winchester Model 37 220 Swift-45 grain soft point spitzer at about 4300 FPS. It had been re-barreled with a Fajen I think. We were thinning coyotes on my friend the doctor's farm to keep them from killing calves. He had a Sako .222 (50 grain) and the 37 had been his Dad's. I had a Ruger M-77V in .243 I was loading with 75 grain HP boattails at about 3750 FPS. The .243 would reach 100 yards farther than the .222, 50 yards farther than the Swift without as good of glass on it, and three shots from the Swift and the barrel was nearly dull red at dawn or dusk. The .22-.308 is too hard on the barrel over a .22-.250 Improved for the gains. And with a Unertl battery scope (12X) on the M-77V I killed a crow at a MEASURED 700 yards pecking in a Winter wheat field in Western OK. A 55 grain .22 vs. a 75 grain 6mm I don't think would have gotten there that flat started 1000 FPS faster or nearly that accurate.

    • @Gunners_Mate_Guns
      @Gunners_Mate_Guns Рік тому +1

Actually, given the extreme velocity of the WSSM, it would probably be a very poor choice for deer because, unless you're using a bullet with a much thicker jacket and controlled expansion at the velocities of this cartridge.
I know that Nosler now makes one of their Partition bullets in .224 diameter for those in states that allow centerfire rifles with that bore diameter on deer, but I'm dubious about whether even that style of bullet with its very good reputation could withstand this thing.
Honestly, you'd probably be much better off with a .223 Remington (good) or .22-250, as I believe the second cartridge was probably the one for which that particular Partition bullet was designed.
It's possible that the .220 Swift might also be suitable, but I'm almost certain that its velocities are the practical maximum for the Partition.
Remember: Bullets used on big game need to behave quite differently from varmint bullets, i.e. ideal varmint bullets fragment upon impact to deliver quick kills on small thin-skinned animals, while ideal bullets for big game will reliably penetrate medium to thick hide before beginning expansion, remaining intact as a single "mushroom" and destroying vital organs before exiting with nearly all of the bullet energy spent.

I'll stick with my 1943 .303 British! Plenty fast, bullet ranges from 150 I think was the lightest,up to 258 gr solids. A friend had some Winchester bullets and loaded me 10 of them. Hurt like a bastard but went through 3\8 or 1\2 inch steel from an old RR tank car someone used as a culvert. The 150 gr were some old surplus ammo I bought at a gun show. They were strange, because instead of loose powder they had cordite spaghetti noodles in the case!
When I can get ammo,I usually get 178 gr Winchester power points.
I mean if you're gonna have an odd ball gun(around here, nowadays) might as well have one that several companies still make ammo for.

I played with speed but accuracy sucked. I used a sabot with a 22 bullet in a 308, 300 Win Mag and a 30-378 Wetherby cartridge. The speeds were insane but the twist of the barrel would not stabilize that small bullet. Some thin jackets and soft points simply vaporized in a puff of smoke as they left the barrel.

There's a reason why the 223 WSSM is dead. It only gives 300 fps more velocity the my old 220 Swifts; its barrel life is extremely short; the short fat case is probably a feeding nightmare in bolt actions; and with a ballistic coefficient of .221, a 40 grain Nosler Ballistic tip is going about 3450 fps @ 200 yards. Even the lowly 223 Remington firing that bullet is going 3,000 fps at that distance. Basically, not worth the effort. About the only thing the 223 WSSM is good for is shooting watermelons, up close.

I shot a wildcat I made by necking down a 270 case to 224. The rifle now has over 3000 shots through it using the same GS Custom 40gr HV bullet. It still holds under one inch at 100 yards at 4700fps at the muzzle. GSC HV bullets allow no gas leakage past the bullet and gas leakage eats barrels. Friction of the bullet and barrel contact is greatly reduced because GSC HV bullets are drive band bullets as opposed to smooth or grooved bullets. It makes a big difference. To those that say there is no record: Do you know of any other 223 WSSM that goes 4700fps? I am not talking about another cartridge, only about 223 WSSM.
