We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

One tenacious couple. Keep rollin!
Javelina were so cool
@Jim For Crewe: What if you put up a cable, running diagonal from the center of the covered porch area to over by the Earthbag Dome, and put Crewe's leash on the cable so he can walk back and forth, from one area to the other.
I have done long cable runs for my dog, even with the cable laying right on the ground. Just watch so they they don't catch your feet in their leash when they're running! Mine was about 90 feet long between 2 gates, the cable attached to the gate posts, and laying on the ground.
My brute boy could guard both gates!
Great 👍 job
Mr Jim. scribe a line at 4'' below that line, cut the flashing to look like the scales, above that line fold over the wall. the scale cut should give you relievf for your bend
joe in 24' YEAH, that'll be good, REAL GOOD !!! hey Liz !!!
Crew's feet wiggling are adorable!
Good for you thinking of the animals
So sweet you put out water for them
12:48 Desert Buffalo!!!
life in the desert
Looks Awesome
Awesome
Look at those guns. Looking good there Jim.
“The Cob Needs addressing”
As a matter of urgency 😮
Jessica you are the MOST patient person ever!!!!!! Your man drags out everything.
What have you built in the last year Shirley?
rain on way sorry busy fighting gremlins again lol, blessed assurance rain incoming. oh don't worry about home not being approved ever again all taken care of blessed assurance, keep going proud you two blessings and peace be with always.
You both are amazing…
Great job on ridge cap Jim!
I would mix a large batch of clay, sand and silt, (Adobe materials) and rent a AST trailer mounted texture blowing machine, make sure it's thin enough and blast that whole dome in one afternoon. Then just sit back and let the sun turn it into a hard shell.
Cheers you guys
Galvanized metal will not hold paint generally speaking or at least not long, what you want is actually galvanel, which is paint ready.
Never heard of that. Will look it up
galvanneal - not galvanel
Y'all should try throwin' a few of those rattlers on the grill...Mmmm, TASTY! 😋 It'll be nice having to put light covers on while you're sleeping in the dead of Summer! Crew's dreaming of chasing those dang little hogs! 😆
Hi you guys I loved your love show last night it was nice you guys are great you two are both lovely people with a big heart I wish I could help you out but I love watching you anyway God bless
Come back and plaster that exterior with a light color and your dome will stay even cooler in the sun.
A few pair of c-clamps would have come in handy on that job also. 😊
Thanks for sharing 👍😀
"neigh-bors" 😂 Oh my gosh that snake looked 3 feet long (or more) I hope he remembers that you didn't hurt him-in case you run into him again. Your ridge caps look great. Have a nice Holiday-hope you get a chance to celebrate with family and friends.
Adult racers (snake). can easily be over 6 feet long. It is a very slender snake.
@@wandadibble5426 Yikes!😱
Ummm a sssnake in the ssssleeping room ?? No thank you i'll passsss...
Yay!
It’s not that you fall down but what you do when you get back up
The work looks great! Cruz was dreaming he is adorable
Nice Sonoran Coachwhip!
Being heat loving snakes, surely the 67* helped make it easy to catch & keep in the open top bucket. Coachwhips are well known to eat young rattlers -- definitely one of the good snakes to have around.
🐎Neighbours. 😁❤️🌼🏇🌼
Unconditional builds definitely require a lot of creativity! Lots of things to figure out. It looks great! 😊❤️🏜️
Perhaps you should correct the word in your comment that detracts from the meaning you're trying to convey.🤔🤔
Heather, Red is a pretty sharp cookie on his UA-cam channel, so the use of 'unconditional' vs. 'unconventional' is worthy of at least a moment of personal reflection on what it takes to build in the Greater Southwest. Go check out his multi-variable Design of Experiments (DOE) on Foamcrete. I have used it as an example to the new Engineers that I work with.
@@honthirty_ 😂 Thanks!
I'd suggest lining the top with scales instead of long sheets. You can overlap the scales after bending them in half and it'd look organic & neat too
Hush you!
Looking good, snake extraction went well to, well done guys team work xx
That looks great folks. I will be glad to see you get the outside sealed up. So will you be harvesting the rainwater from that to the cistern? I always wondered if you guys ever watch television out there? Also, are there plans for a spiral stairway for the bedroom? Keep chugging'. You'll get there. I always look forward to your videos. Give ol' Crew some scratches from me. 🙂
dang, i'm glad you finally got the hatband finished....congrats! keep on keepin' on.👍👍👍👍👍
The shingles are super unique and beautiful!!
Awesomeness 😃
Another great show. Monsoons 1 month
Learning so much
Happy Birthday late 🍰🍨🎁🌺
Happy birthday to you both. I think it's nice that you celebrate both together on your own special day.
You did a very good job. Well done
It would be hard not to hang out in the dome more and more as the temps increase!
I knew you would figure it out. Looking good Jim
Wonderful job, Jim! Your home becomes more beautiful every day! I don't comment much but I always watch and like. Kudos to you and Jess for all your hard work!
we have 71/2 footer in the pumphouse, it can stay but babycoopers ... must go (; looking good 🤟✌🌻
Good afternoon Green Dream family. Loving your progress! Jim, you are in need of a workbench. Even a small one would be a huge asset! Just a thought.
Love these videos well done guys 😊
Jim, I am concerned that the soon-to-start monsoons will eat away at your dome. When do you get some protection up there?
66.9 .... nice 👌
I see crew gave his sniff of approval. Which means it must be okay
Nope not moving in yet, with snakes. LOL
Love it!
You'll have such a generous spirit watering the wild boars 🐗
Javalina are not boars.
Looking at the picture of your dome roof, I am wondering how you are going to get the rain water to collect on the eave around the dome, collecting in the downspouts, instead of running down the cob to the ground. Are you going to install flashing there and cob over the top edge of the flashing?🧡🧡
Time to put lights up down there so's you can see the snakes and start cobbin' the walls
Rattlers is good eatin'...
Great video again guys!!
Sod the snakes couldn't have that lol
Other than that good job on everything..
Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
With those temperatures, I'd be moving in the dome. LOL
Ooh that bloom..maybe it'll turn into a pineapple. How exciting!
❤️❤️❤️
The Tri-Namic trio strikes again!! Good job people!!
Great job 👌 Blessings 💖
We were 118 last week here is Redding,Ca.
Hit the like button everyone.
I have been enjoying your journey and can’t wait to see the next one! Always nice to see Jess smiling as I always hear you laughing 😂
Like they did on tiny shiny homestead
Way to go Jim and Jess. I loved the coachwhip catching. I have only seen one in my property so far. Also fun to see Jess do a stand off with a Curve-billed Thrasher. They don't have a curve-bill like that for nothing. They love digging looking for anything edible with that tool.
Thanks for IDing the bird. I was wondering what type it was. Cool.
Crew is chasing those Javelinas in his dreams.
Pumice stones in the top of your plants will help you with any of those problems.
Where did you get the long catch pole
Great to know your home inside is as cool as the outside! ❤️🌱🌞🎨
We are new just a few miles away. Land owners ready to make a home. I enjoy watching you both make this work. And that laugh ..
This is definitely a great episode. I am sure, sometimes, you may feel like you're getting nowhere, however, the seemingly tedious process is also the MOST IMPORTANT part of the journey. I can't say it enough - how much you both inspire me to push to do more off grid projects. You are doing an amazing job by showing us that it CAN be done. Great look on the hat & shades, Jim! You remind me of a Vietnam Soldier in hot weather back in the 60's. And Jess, I admire your inner peaceful vibe. You are demure with the glow like the sun. I call it a "demure radiance". And, lastly: "Do you plan to shave or skim Crew for the summer"? #Thankyou for sharing your journey with us. #Keepupthegreatwork Happy Memorial Day Weekend.
About Crew I can answer that NOPE. Been watching since they start the Cistern.
@@marymccowan6629 🤣🤣😅 I totally understand. It will get HOT out here though. 3-digit hot. Crew needs a pool!
@@TheUltimateAcres
They've been out there for at least 3yrs , so are well aware of the temps. Also do you need other people to instruct you on how to maintain your pets ??? Maybe a rephrased question :
" with the high temps out here in the desert and with Crews breed having such thick coats, what do you do to cool him down for the summer heat please ?" ....
OK, I hope you see the difference . 👍👏👍👏
PEACE OUT ✌️✌️✌️✌️
@@heatherclayton-callaghan4270 no one is instructing anything for anyone. It was a simple question and simple observation. Please don't twist anything I say to negativity. My intentions were good and the pool remark was said in jest. These are the hazards of answering questions that weren't meant for you. Thanks anyway!✌🏿
You might be able to use the original roll in the gap between the rain trough and the dome if you’re going to fill that with cob (lay it down and cob over).
I Love how the roof is turning out! Fantastic!!
✅🌟👍
Yay on completing the ridgecap!
great job keep up the good work!!!
When you're spray painting stuff, maybe do it in the bed of that rusty trailer. The overspray will help keep the rust down.
Maybe a hardware cloth "door" can be made between the basement and first floor levels. With a tight fit. :) and a self closing mechanism.
Never make a TRAP DOOR that cant stand the heaviest point load possible.
@@honthirty_ I was imagining it would be to keep snakes out. A strong metal grate does sound safer
Looking good. Loved the snake handling.
enjoyed the critters.......the dome looks amazing
Regarding your house temp. You won’t really have a good idea until you are in residence. Your bodies give off a lot of heat. It will be really interesting to see how it works. Fans would help. I understand the heat I too live in the desert.
As they say You don't learn anything if you don't try. Job very well!
I don't post here often as anything I could say is in the past and done and dusted by the time you would read it, but I may just be in on this one ;o) ....
Have you thought about how to cover the gap on the inside of the rim? It looks like there are small gaps between the adobe and the aircrete ...... this would allow rain to go under the whole catchment of the rim instead of into your tanks!
I would imagine a little adobe to divert the rain running down the side of your dome would do the trick. Normally I would be talking about flashing but you could use what you have and what you are good at to better effect!
I am sure you already have it all planned out, but if I don't mention it now it might be too late if the rain is coming.
You mentioned previously about Crew getting too hot and turning camatose ........ would he not like it inside your dome?
Or is keeping an eye on the workers more important to him? ;o)
I was going to say something about the metal being so small, lots of work, but experience is priceless, and usually those longer efforts look better...
I've designed a earth home that will compete against new homes, I mix best of all worlds and make earth building a no brainer...
You have to seal that roof before it rains, as the gutter will collect water and it will soak into the wall; big-time!
i dont think you will have to worry about snakes in the dome to much once you get a real door set up finished . looking good and great to hear you will be working on the inside soon . work safe guys
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 love you guys, Good you talk to the animals. maybe find where the snake came in and make it snake proof.
Appreciate the shingle feature and also the energy you bring to rescuing the serpent. The ladybug ride along and ‘neighbors visit’ were among sweetest part. I think the pineapple fruit will begin to bulge and develop at base of the flower. The music is perfect. If one eats meat can those hoofed explorers be fare game?
Awesome to watch you guys making progress on the dome and the way you handle and treat snakes, thank you.
great job on getting the red snake out and put near the hay for rat control.
if you kids are going to do a white wash on the outside remember to add 1/4 c of plain salt to the lime & water . and you need to lightly dampen the surface to be whitewashed . the salt helps the lime stick and repair its self . I haad forgotten and got most of my house done and kept wondering why it was washing off so easy when i was damping the next section (I had forgotten the salt ) made a huge difference
Salt will contaminate any collected water. While the sombrerro with a ferro-cement gutter would, at best, yield less than 50% of rain fall, the run off would have to be segregated, until the lime coat is chemically stable & determined to be useable.
That's how a pineapple grows
Sure its going to wrinkle! but fold it where its nice looking! I still say you need tar paper under it! Cause metal sweat moisture
Working on job sites all my life the first thing we always did was to make a 8 to 10 ft table waist high. For a work bench it saves time stress and your back and can be used for everything we moved it to where ever we needed it and it lasts
The ridge cap looks great. Good job. Your pineapple plants look exactly like my two! They're at the same stages. I'm in NC, so they are kept inside during the winter months. Just put them outside last week.
Cool. I hope they bear the juiciest fruit during those difficult seasons. I wish I had pineapple trees, maybe next year.
@@TheUltimateAcres - Thanks. Ha, all the years I lived in Hawaii I could've grown them but didn't. I did have access to mangos dropping to the ground in areas, and picking papayas. So now I'm growing all three.
Yes Jim..I think using the large washers under the Bolt made all the diference should reduce risk of Bolt cuttung into the sheet
Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again. Sounds like an old Fred Astaire song. Not a fan, but I remember being told that line growing up.
Now you made me excited for what is still to come
Cannot wait. Great job so far you two. 🥰
