We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

You got a floor and an epic background score. This plays like a western movie. I'm half expecting John Wayne to ride up. Well, he'd be plenty proud of what you kids are accomplishing out there with just the dirt and the hay and water from the sky. I think you must be on my list for "Winners of the Real West". It sure makes an old man's heart proud to see you both working together and getting your Dream Project done and won: - "One Mix at a Time"!!!

Jim if you run out of straw just go in the field behind you and chop it down. It wouldn't hurt if you kept the grass cut around you to deter snakes anyway.❤❤❤❤

Once you clean out the floor - you could move the mixer in there to make the cob. Won't have to lug heavy cob as far when you do the walls.

Just thought I'd share something that I suggest to everyone (and all of the folks watching), that I follow, that does back breaking work...
Get yourself a good back brace, and wear it whenever you're working.
I'm 60 years old, and have degenerative disc disease. I've abused my back in my younger years, and have paid the price.
The only reason I'm able to still do physical labor (which I find quite satisfying), and stay somewhat pain free, is because of my back brace.
Even when my back feels fine, I put it on whenever I'm working (and of course, pay attention to how you are moving. Using your legs, instead of you back, as much as possible).
Can't stress enough the benefits of a good back brace. It's the simplest, and least expensive thing you can do to save your back.
Love y'all ❣️ hope everyone has a great weekend.
    ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎

When mixing different flocks, I have lots of perches so that they can get away from eachother. I also have a food and water pot up on the perches for at least a month so they can gain confidence and not starve and grow weak.

Interesting, "kinda turned the corner"-----in a circular dome?? Ha! Will your final flooring coat be more of a non-straw mix? Maybe give the surface a smoother feel and then some linseed oil for a binder? Just spitballing some ideas since I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm not there. Obviously, I can't wait to see what you wind up with as well as seeing the top of the dome finished in all of it's stunning glory. Looking good, folks, looking good!

No tapping down of the cob required to minimize shrinkage when dry. Any thoughts to making a temporary covered cob station near to the dome? Seems like a lot of handling and backtracking-water, hay, sand, mixing and barrowing of 2 cob pails to the dome. Sheltered area: power, water, hay, sand, mixer, wheelbarrow, totes, hose, shovel. Shorter distance to the dome.

There are lots of exciting options. Mixing blood (need a farmer to sacrifice a goat or two) with clay also makes a very groovy dark brown waterproof floor. When it dries it leaves large cracks that you fill in with a white lime, prickly pear sap, mud mixture. Another method is simply smearing the floor with fresh cow dung as is done in India.

wow thats alot of water to dry up . my advice would be leave them doors open as much as you can and turn that ceiling fan on to rotate the air in the dome .it will help it dry out alot faster . still looking at about a month or maybe more for it to dry out . could take up to a year for it to dry completely on the inside of the cob seeing how its kinda trapped in mud . but it should be usable in a couple of days as far as dry on the outside . with the layers of cob that still have to go on that door is going to be a issue again . unless you just work around it then when you take it out fill in that area .
