Edmonton has a fascinating history. One of the reasons why it was selected as the capital (and why it got the University) over Calgary was because of Alexander Rutherford, Alberta’s first Premier. He owned a lot of land in Strathcona (just across the river from Edmonton and now a part of Edmonton) and lived there.
Another part of that story I think is interesting is the political differences between the cities; Edmonton being usually more liberal (to varying degrees) and Calgary being quite conservative likely played a role since Liberal PM Wilfred Laurier had been elected the year before Alberta entered confederation and you’ll conclude who voted for him…

The River Valley is so deep that you don't even see the tip of the 70 storey Stantec Tower in lots of areas in the River Valley right on the edge of downtown. Feels like you're in the wilderness not near any urban area when you're right next to downtown in some parts.
As a former Edmontonian I like how you captured the beauty of the city in the summer time. The winter time is a different story lol. Also majority of people drive pick up trucks. You see more pick up trucks compared to a Corolla or civic lol
Also mini vans and SUV's ! Edmontonians have gotten smart when it comes to winter driving and perhaps think that driving a bigger vehicle with winter tires is safer and easier to handle in the snow and on the ice? I switched from a car to SUV for that exact reason!!
More pickups? Umm...no. An Alberta survey said only 21% of Albertans drove pickups and its even lower in Calgary and Edmonton. One can easily drive around town and see it's not even close to being the case.
I’ve lived in Edmonton my whole life, & the thing I like about it is that it’s a big city with a small town feel. It’s easy to talk to people & if you need directions or anything, someone will help you . Plus, it’s quite safe for a large city.
I lived in Edmonton for the first 17 years of my life and have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it. I have many fond memories growing up there and it's such an active vibrant city...during the summer. The winters are, well...absolutely brutal. I could tell stories that would chill you to the bone, no pun intended. It's the reason I would never consider moving back there. The other thing that's kind of a bummer about Edmonton is that it's very remote so it's kind of a pain to live there if you like to travel a lot. It's a fun town though, lots to see and do, just avoid it between October and April lol
I am really grateful to live in Edmonton, I came here as a hopeless addict, and I will be leaving this city in the top eschelon of society. I got healthy here, and I found my wife here. Thank you Edmonton.
Great video, lots of cool info here about my city! Small correction, however: Edmonton took on the moniker "City of Champions" because of the amount of volunteers that came out to help people recover after the Black Friday tornado in '87. The Sports stuff helped contribute to it though, as they were winning both the Stanley Cup and Grey Cup (CFL Championship) pretty regularly.
This is my home city. Born and raised here. It’s cool to see someone who isn’t Canadian cover my city, and you using km’s instead of miles. It’s more blue collar than Calgary, which is white collar. Alberta is considered Texas of the North
Wow, I always imagined Edmonton to be grim and kind of dirty. Granted, I've only been there 3 times for work and left so that wasn't a fair assessment at all. This video totally changes my perception of the city. I'll have to take a proper trip this summer for sure now that I live in Calgary.
You would be wise to trust your original perception. Edmonton is a disgusting, rotting, crime ridden, miserable city that doesn’t come close to Calgary. You can have a pretty fun day or even weekend at the west Ed but there is nothing special about the rest of the city, and it’s not a safe and enjoyable place to explore. Watching a high definition compilation of pretty buildings and tourist attractions from a guy who’s never even been there should not change your perception on anything regarding that shit hole.
I live in Ontario and at the point in my life now it seems that perhaps western Canada would be a better place for me to live, I could liquidate a smaller property here and buy a larger property overlooking the rockies in Alberta if I wanted to, the natural beauty in western Canada is unrivalled. I could continue my work over there as well, but its leaving family that's hard but I think of past ancestors who left Europe for a better more prosperous life in Canada.
Possible, but property overlooking the rockies is big, big bucks now, especially around Calgary. I remember when Canmore was affordable. Not anymore. Perhaps if you were west of Edmonton in the Hinton area. Very beautiful but fairly isolated. On the plus side it's not far from the National Park and Jasper is a great little resort town not too far away.
As someone that lives in Edmonton, I love this city, it can just get way too cold sometimes. Outside of that though, perfect size and place to raise kids.
Great video I hope to visit or relocate to Edmonton one day. You should do a video on Anchorage or my home town of Fairbanks! Just any Alaskan city would scratch my itch lol
I’m from Montreal, lived in Calgary before, but didn’t get the chance to check out Edmonton although I’ve heard good things about it. And this video just made me book a flight for a 3 days getaway. Didn’t know where to go, thanks 😅
Thank you for a great video! I always learn a lot. If you're doing Canada then why not Mexico too? I am less familiar with their cities than I am with Canada's.
@@CityGeek thank you, and thank you for actually trying to figure out how to pronounce the local names used. It always give me a chill when some bloke with a know-it-all attitude destroys the pronunciation and then these reactors just perpetuate their mistakes.
Just a correction, the city of championship isn't to do with sports, although is a very common mistake. It's to do with the people and how they heroically helped each other in times of crisis particularly referring to a tornado in the 80s. It just coinsided with the Elks and Oilers winning streaks, which is why there is the confusion.
@alex35agm I'm not even a CFL fan because let's be real, it's a rip off of a rip off of an actual sport. That's said, those 14 titles are apparently nothing. Good to know. Also not the point of my comment to rile some child, so I'd appreciate you removing you comment for to keep the point propper
A fair balanced view of the AB capital city. Like its Southern rival, Big E is growing and very vibrant economically. Alberta is fortunate to have two great urban choices.
As an Edmontonian, it's a shame to hear good things being said about the Royal Alberta Museum. Yes i know that seems like a odd statement. For all it's square footage, the RAM is more empty useless square foot than exhibit area. The old RAM, which the new building replaced, felt full and exciting with new things to see just around a corner. One of the reasons that the new building was commissioned was that the museum archived were so full, they couldn't display more than a third of the items at any one time. So having a shiny new building wit huge wide and very empty halls, soaring ceiling filled with nothing and galleries displaying the exact same thing that were in the old building, is kind of a kick in the teeth. IMHO
In addition to the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton is home to several other sports teams, such as Edmonton Elks, of the CFL, FC Edmonton of the CPL, and Edmonton Stingers of the CEBL.
Lived there for good number of years, where my first son was born. Loved it. Winter is brutal but it is "dry cold" comparing with East Coast cities. Living cost is low, and income is comparably higher. So overall, for small mid-class family who want both low cost living & metro city vibe, Edmonton could be a good option. Calgary is definitely better, but Edmonton has its uniqueness and character.
I’m from Vancouver but lived in Edmonton in 90-92 ish. Great city people were way friendly than Van which is by-far the least friendly city in Canada. Prices are good foods good people are honest and nice…
Lived here all my life. You can still pan gold in Gold Bar creek.. to this day, I can pull $50 out of the dirt in an afternoon. If you come to Edmonton, you really need to take a walk through the river valley. Unless you're not into nature, then I guess you could hit up the mall....
City of champions has nothing to do with any sports teams within the city. In 1987 (Which is 3 years prior to the last Stanley cup you referenced) a tornado wiped through Edmonton's east side and destroyed thousands of homes, displaced hundreds of people and even a few deaths occurred because of it. Laurence Decore, the mayor at the time, cited the response by the community and emergency services as evidence that Edmonton was a ‘City of Champions.’ Nothing to do with sports. -An Edmontontonian
Idk people say it's racist here as a indigenous thats 28 born and raised here I only experience it 3 times or something like that the people here are so nice
You did a good job and while you can't mention everything, three defining features of Edmonton that you didn't mention were Refinery Row on the east side, the views and recreation opportunities of the wide river valley, and the weather. I have lived in Edmonton several times and much prefer it to Calgary. The best thing in Calgary are the mountains which - of course - are an hour's drive away.

Moved from Calgary to Edmonton 15 years back, and no regret so far. It is a great city to raise family.
Moving to downtown Edmonton in a few months, super excited!
Sorry to say but Downtown Edmonton is horrible, a place full of homeless drug addicts with very few normal human beings walking the downtown Streets, most unsafe place of Edmonton
Glad to have you. Welcome toy city.
how do you like it?😊
The River Valley is so deep that you don't even see the tip of the 70 storey Stantec Tower in lots of areas in the River Valley right on the edge of downtown. Feels like you're in the wilderness not near any urban area when you're right next to downtown in some parts.
That was a great overview of Edmonton!
Thank you!!
Keep these coming, please. Always a treat when one drops.
Thank you! I’ll try to get the next one out quicker!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you. I'm in Edmonton for a month and I wanted to see all the sites. I'm going to all these places now.
Wow great video on Edmonton. I wanna visit one day, Canadian cities always amazes me. Clean & beautiful.
Thank you!
Yes, if you take photos right after heavy rain, and from a distance.
I live in Edmonton. It’s not that clean. It’s a big city
Majority pickups is factually untrue haha. But yes, we have lots. Partially due to winter, industrial economy, and laws that enable it.
More pickups? Umm...no. An Alberta survey said only 21% of Albertans drove pickups and its even lower in Calgary and Edmonton. One can easily drive around town and see it's not even close to being the case.
Haha there are a lot of pickups but that’s not true, Edmonton is probably the city with the least pickups in Alberta actually.
From Alberta, big Oil fan, been to Edmonton countless times, just now convinced that it's very underrated.
Oil fan is a-big fan of destroying the planet , guns , the far west like in Texas
nice seeing my city get mentioned!!
Awesome vid friend, we moved to Mexico from Edmonton Albert in Oct 2021. Edmonton Alberta was good to us. 💖✌🏽
I’ve lived in Edmonton my whole life, & the thing I like about it is that it’s a big city with a small town feel. It’s easy to talk to people & if you need directions or anything, someone will help you . Plus, it’s quite safe for a large city.
Have you ever been downtown? Lol ya wonderful place...
Wow this city looks so nice! Must be so underrated!
Great video on Edmonton, we lived there for over 24 years and its architecture has become very impressive. It's a great city.
Thank you!
Thanks for pointing that out! I'll make a correction in my video description.
I lived in Edmonton for the last 10 years, the city has developed, and so many things changed. One I hate about it is the harsh winter 🥶.
Can you tell me about the job opportunities
@@muntaserrahman8541 there’s many opportunities in Edmonton depending what you looking for.
Excellent Edmonton🎉🎉👏👏👏👏
You imagined correctly
I was there last Summer and was impressed. Lots of cool breweries, places to eat. It had a nice feel and am saying that as a Torontonian
You must have been in the north part of the city
@@btech918 if you really think so, you must not have any friends, or go out often, or both
Thanks! I choice Edmonton home, never regret
Can't see the rockies from Edmonton. Just Calgary.
@@Tribuneoftheplebs Well I mentioned Alberta, no city in particular.
@@danbaumann8273 thanks for the ideas. I live west of edmonton so ill look into that
@@Tribuneoftheplebs Well, I'll be. So do I.
As someone that lives in Edmonton, I love this city, it can just get way too cold sometimes. Outside of that though, perfect size and place to raise kids.
Another great "Meet..." video!
Thanks!!
A quick correction, Edmonton is the 5th largest metro area not 6th, and Quebec City is around 7th or 8th as Ottawa behind Edmonton.
Great video I hope to visit or relocate to Edmonton one day. You should do a video on Anchorage or my home town of Fairbanks! Just any Alaskan city would scratch my itch lol
Thank you!! I’ll definitely do one of Anchorage at some point 😊
Thank you!! Yeah I’m sure I’ll make some videos on cities in Mexico down the road 😊
Thanks for covering my home city!
Love my city, Edmonton! Great video. :)
Thank you!!
❤ Edmonton
Nice to see my city get some attention
Good job! Edmonton is a great place to live.
Wow that’s a nice city
Would love to see you cover Hamilton, Ontario. Such an underrated city with a bunch of character.
I’ll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hamilton is among the most dangerous city in Canada according to statistics Canada in 2022 and getting worst even in Toronto
Thanks for making great videos and not using stock whatever footage that isn't even in the cities.
Thank you! And yes those kind of geography videos always bothered me so I try my best to get actual footage of what I am describing.
@@CityGeek thank you, and thank you for actually trying to figure out how to pronounce the local names used. It always give me a chill when some bloke with a know-it-all attitude destroys the pronunciation and then these reactors just perpetuate their mistakes.
it's a dated city stopped booming since 1980. you can tell by visiting the Jasper Avenue. crime rate is quite high.
First.
Ok, *I did not* expect to see you here.
@@DioTheGreatOne I'm everywhere.
@@JerryRigEverything I knew it, you are God.
Love Edmonton
As a Montrealer I would really appreciate to see a video about Montreal.
Correction, the Elks haven't won anything, especially recently, although they could be given the chicken award for changing their name .
3:22 Galveston, TX has something similar to this. It’s called Moody Gardens.
A fair balanced view of the AB capital city. Like its Southern rival, Big E is growing and very vibrant economically. Alberta is fortunate to have two great urban choices.
That indoor bungee 😮 whaaaat
Great video
Thank you!!
Riverhawks and Oil Kings as well
Its Edmonton Eskimos!
Thanks for this video bro! Awesome 👌
Thank you! 🙏
Taste of Edmonton and k days were some of my favourite event to go to in Edmonton when I was a kid
Thinking about moving from Toronto to Edmonton so I am watching videos about the city
Really cool as usual!!
Thank you!!
Gòod vid, should do Fort Mac and Lethbridge next
Cheers
As a Vancouverite I was like "OMG I'm going to have so much fun bashing Edmonton," but it was good video
Lol, thanks!
@@CityGeek when are u doing a video on Vancouver ❤
Vancouver sucks, lived there for 34 years.
Beautiful city 🍀Greetings to uncles and aunts to cousin and cousin and to their children
An old Edmontonain here and other slang names for Edmonton are the YEG, E-Town, E-City, and Deadmonton
I moved back here from Vancouver. Best thing I ever did!
Great video! What software do you use to edit your vids?
Thank you!! I’m cheap so I just use iMovie right now
@@CityGeek me too but still can't get my vids to look like that. Need some practice. But keep up the great work :)
@@slidedeckfinance Thank you!! Good luck with your videos!
Awesome job! I like the comparison numbers to U.S cities
Thank you!
Im from Edmonton I was waiting for this video to come out ever since the Calgary one came out lmao
Man I am Torontonian but Edmonton does look pretty neat.
And another and probably the most fitting nickname is Deadmonton :D
City of champions has nothing to do with any sports teams within the city. In 1987 (Which is 3 years prior to the last Stanley cup you referenced) a tornado wiped through Edmonton's east side and destroyed thousands of homes, displaced hundreds of people and even a few deaths occurred because of it. Laurence Decore, the mayor at the time, cited the response by the community and emergency services as evidence that Edmonton was a ‘City of Champions.’
Nothing to do with sports.
-An Edmontontonian
Yes , and as a remembrance to those that provided aid , and a tribute to those lives lost this point should be addressed and corrected in this video .
It represented the spirit of the people.
4:27 interior of this mall reminds me of Russia's GUM, especially the arching ceiling.
Idk people say it's racist here as a indigenous thats 28 born and raised here I only experience it 3 times or something like that the people here are so nice
West Edmonton mall is my favorite part of Edmonton and i also remember getting lost at elk Island park 😂
A nice shot of downtown Edmonton is looking east from west on northside of downtown juat north of 104 ave.
Nice video
Wow you just gained a follower and I really love to move to Alberta I might not live in Edmonton but might live in Airdrie 🥰
Thank you!
Please make a video of Winnipeg!
Most underrated city in Canada!
Thanks for the informative comment!
The ONLY reason I would wanna leave Edmonton is to move to Vancouver island to get rid of the brutal winters! I love it here!
Could you do a video on Lexington, KY? It's not a huge city but it has a ton of unique qualities
Absolutely!
Great Job
Thanks!
You should do a video on Sherwood Park Alberta!
Both my kids were born there and is my favorite city i have lived in, which includes larr Germany Calgary toronto kinston and Ottawa.
