Revell 1:72 B 17F "Memphis Belle"

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2020
- This was a very involved project. I spent hours watching and rewatching the Memphis Belle movie, and newly released videos on the restored Memphis Belle. I based the Belle as it was on it's 23rd mission, as on the 25th mission there was extensive damage to the tail. I didn't know this until after the fuselage was glued together. There's a lot of love and frustration gone into this model. It's far from a perfect model, but I'm pretty pleased with the end results.

I had one of these for a Christmas present, well over 50 years ago! I’m pretty sure it didn’t have the level of detail this has but it gave me hours of joy and a memory which is almost as fresh as a 68 year old brain can haul back into being.
Cool
Takes me back. Thank you from an old guy who just can't do it anymore.
Hello mr cloud!i build that kit in 1997at the age of 13.and as i conquered the kit i was so very proud as i put it on display.ohh those happy childhood days.with best regards and sticky greetings from Brandenburg/germany.your modellmate.christian
I'm a car builder myself but recently I've been leaning more towards military builds and this video definitely pushed me more in that direction..
Absolutely superb attention to detail of the Memphis Belle! I saw her when she was still on display in Memphis (before the restoration and relocation to Dayton). You got the colors perfect! Even the darker green “patch work.” The only thing missing was all the bird poop on her from sitting all those decades on display.
I thought she was in the Smithsonian ! That's where she belongs ❤❤❤
Excellent work mate looks fantastic, you certainly overcame the kits problems, back ground music is great to buddy
I appreciate that greatly Matt, lots of problems with this kit, I'm hoping that the Airfix kit will be a lot smoother build. But after editing this video I'm not all that keen to build another for a bit haha
Great job on the model kit! Looks really good and the audio clips added into video were a nice touch. It really helps to tell the story of this iconic airplane!
Great Work! The narration at the end gave me chills! I've seen all the documentaries and have this kit with a ton of photo etch waiting on my shelf... big job
You may say this build isn't perfect, but it is a first class build. I'd be very happy with this kind of result. Very impressive.
Man amazing build, the audio at the end is chilling..praise thise brave men.
Wonderful kit ,well constructed and painted, great job looks good.
Thank you Captain :)
Solid and innovative build!!! And a really nice video, you captured nice angles!!! Looking forward to tune in again!!!
I'm going to try and record the final shots for my most recent build. It's a BIG model :)
Thank you so much for a masterful build.
I want to say to start, those end flap model boxes are such a drag. It is a special time building B-17's. They have that 50's hot rod good look. May all your imaginations be as alive as mine as I pictured these planes in service. Nice looking instructions. Looks like a graphic novel. I have never built one in 1/72 so detailed inside. Good job.
I agree it's difficult to store parts back in the box when you are done. I know that people have mentioned this to Revell in the past. I really wish they'd stop making these types of boxes.
During what must have been a terrifying seemingly never-ending engagement they all seemed so calm and focused. Such brave men.
They were trained to stay calm and to not yell over the radio otherwise the messages would be garbled.
That was dubbed by the crew in post production, profanities removed for a more innocent non cussing America of the 40s, wouldn’t do for Aunt Emma hearing her nephew cuss, might put her off buying war bonds.
Very nice work Jared. I enjoy your builds very much, and learn a lot from your videos. Cheers
Thank you very much Stephen, I'm really glad that I finally got this one completed. I'm going to get some new decals soon and build another one. Possibly have it out later this year :)
Remarkable. You’ve gone from Craftsman to Artisan.
Excellent attention to detail!👌
Hi Building the Revell 1/48 scale Belle a giant of a kit I was in a bit of a fix for some of the paint colours, but thanks to this video I am, well on my way to a beautiful model. Where I am going to put it in my collection I don't know yet. . Thanks for a good video and very helpful even though it is the big daddy to the kit shown thanks
snazzy new intro and a nice looking model man! Even in 72nd scale that looks like a beast of a kit
Thanks TWA :D Yeah this kist took me nearly 2 years to complete, it just kept coming up with problems. Worst part was that when it was finally done I went to put it in the display case and found out that it's too big, I just can't seem to win.
I built one of these too, my favorite model. Actually got to take a flight on the liberty belle in Sacramento, $400. I love B17s!
Fantastic job ! Love your work
Thank you so much Nicholas :)
Great job on the B-17....I enjoyed watching this video as it has given me lots of tips for future builds. I wasn't aware that Krystal Kleer could be used to build windows...another beaut idea to store in the vault....wished I'd seen this vid earlier!
It's a very helpful glue, I use this method on a lot of builds. It's just most times it's on an odd place and difficult to record.
Superb work at this airplane model , it is fantastic . Excelent painting and weathering , that's make from this project to become more real .🏆🥇🎩👌
Fantastic work Jared! Beautiful!!
Thank you very much :)
Excellent work!
I really like the idea of using a magnet on the turret hager.
Thanks Michael. It was actually pretty easy to install and saved me a lot of work with painting and finishing :)
Hi So do I tried it today GREAT!!
I do learn a lot with you, cheers.
I met one of these hero’s, he flew to Berlin and back 2x in a B-24. 1st mission Berlin and his last 35th. They changed it to 35 in 1944 so they didn’t rotate experienced crews as fast. That must of been a raw deal for those one month away from shipping home when it changed. Some that went on knew they’d buy the farm, but they went anyway so you and me can be free to worship as we please, or not, so you didn’t have to hate your fellow man so a master race could rule over you, so you could say I think what I wish without the state telling you what to think. The ones which didn’t return, whether they be Americans or part of the United Nations of Allies, they gave all their tomorrows, for your yesterdays!
I think he"s a famous model maker. He has a fair talent to make such a plastic model real scenery. GOOD JOB he made !
Thank you very much, this is one of the nicest comments I've ever received :)
Awesome build. Love it.
Thanks as always Charlie.
I have that model kit as well. And it's waiting to be assembled ;) :)
I like when you have putted the magnet on turret (4:22), and I like how you have made a small windows of glue. Thanks for the tips, pal. Very excellent work dear friend. I like it.
Thanks man, the Kristal Klear is a great tool for small windows. It makes things a lot easier than creating new windows out of clear plastic :)
Excellent work well done, great looking B17.
Thanks Chancer, it was a tough kit, but I'm glad to have it completed :)
This looks great. I love the interior detail. Would love to try a B-17, but this might be beyond my skill right now.
Me encanta, muchas gracias por enseñar tu trabajo saludos desde españa 🇪🇸 💪💪
You are definitively a great artist!
Wow, thank you Stephane, that's really kind of you to say :)
@@rebelsatcloudnine You're welcome ;-)
Great build man ñice video also thanks for the download Hi from Ireland🇮🇪💚☘️✌️
I've been watching your videos since 2013. You have developed an incredible skill set, as well video producing talent. I was blown away with the Micro Krystal Clear windows you made. Model on :)
Thank you very much Russell, coming form you that means a lot :) I'm actually uploading another B-17, this time the new Airfix kit. It should be up tomorrow. How have you been man, your channel has been quite for while now?
@@rebelsatcloudnine You are too kind, Sir. I have moved away from video making for the time being. I will return again in the future. maybe a new name. I achieved my goal which was to meet model builders around the world and share this great hobby. Also, I need to focus on my builds. I have too many that I have neglected and need to be finished .
to make the windows with the krystal clear you have to take a glob and set it on something and let it start to dry and cure (about 10 min or so) otherwise it will just fall thru the window. It will work instantly if you are doing a very very small window.
INCREDIBLE Build..Neat Bomber..
Belle maquette bien propre !! bravo et ... A+
I have a Revell B 17G that I was going to build for a friend that rode in the 909 before it crashed. He and I went to see it at an air display a few years ago. I have photos of it somewhere.
What a lucky guy, I was gutted when I heard that it crashed, and worst of all that people were on board. I'd really love to see one someday :)
A job well done. My congratulations for it and thanks for the video. Good tips in it.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was helpful :)
chapeau, dit is een prachtig werk proficiat!!
Very nice work. Great B-17. Greetings. Aleš 😎👍
Beautiful build
Another must buy
B17 is a beautifull plane. Much stronger that any p2w game says. Nicely built model. Clean work too. Too bad these models were never available in my country.
Well done!
Great job. I'm starting to gather ideas for my build of Academy's B-17F 1/72...hope I can finish mine as good as yours!...
You did a beautiful job . I watched the video several times , it took me until the third time to realize that Revell didn’t include the pitot tube. I was thinking about cutting off one end of a small staple and using that for the pitot tube.
Wow, that was awesome
Thanks Stillerjager, I'm planning on building another one soonish ;)
awesome work keepthem coming
Still pondering wether I'll get the Academy or the Revell kit.. Seeing your build surely put some weight on the Revell scale!
I built the Academy kit years back when I was a teen, I didn't enjoy the build. Especially that the landing gear was too fragile and it buckled under the weight of the model.
Well, the hard work paid off... :) That is a beaut... :) :)
Thanks Rob, I watched your Academy build a few times to keep me inspired to build this kit, it was really helpful :)
@@rebelsatcloudnineYou are too kind.. :) I like your new intro, by the way.. even though I am a little bit nostalgic for the bullet holes. :) I have had a few different intros over the years, but I quite like my current one, as it reminds me of an interesting period in my life.. :)
I'm starting on a model today! Hoping to have it ready as an anniversary gift for my hubby. Hopefully, I have the patience it'll be a really cool gift he won't be expecting. If my results are anywhere near this I'm sure i win with gifts this year, Thanks.
I just bought this model on a market for second users but I should only can built it with your video. Thanks.
Excelente video desde Chile abrazo me encanta los aviones el aeromodelismo gran trabajo 🤟🤟🤟
Such a nostalgic kit this one I feel like I should build it for a third time
@@beaugavin8292 you’re bot isn’t falling anyway take your scam someplace else
Great job .... 🤩🤩🤩
Now this is epic
Espectacular
I remember my B17, build in the 70th.
Not nearly like this;-)
Wow
Nice job.👍
This is great.
Superb bro
I've been excited for another one of these! I'm looking forward to the next stream too :)
Thanks, I haven't got another live Stream planned, as life has been pretty busy lately. But I should do one soon, and I'll be sure to announce it first :)
Had the same kit, but mine was molded in Olive Drab green, and came with paints, assembly glue, and paintbrushes.
The b 17 is so gorgeous I like it😊
the B 25 j and b 25 D , the douglas invader A 26b, such cool planes as well.
looks good
So, I actually got back to working on the same kit. I'm glad you made this video because those glass windows that need to be cut out above the nose would have freaked me out. My only question is did you thin the edges out after the cutting? I'm wondering if the krystal Klear needs some large styrene for a good bite.
I saw the film here in England 30 years ago, it shocked me and moved me to tears! I have to get this kit. I hope it’s still available?
The 1990 film is terrible.. very disrespectful.
This is a seriously updated, new 1/72nd scale Memphis Belle B-17F kit, not the venerable Revell kit which first appeared in the early 1960s (I built several of those as a kid).
I like the mismatched wing/tail wing/tail rudder detail
I am still confused on how to find and use the right type or color of primer for the body and wings?
Hi dude, amazing job - how did you attach the thread though? I am stuck on this step!
I still have the original, 1st issue Memphis Belle kit from 1969, nib. I'm too green to risk building it. I've had it for 22 years and I'll probably look at the box for another 22.
Awesome looking plane! Could you tell me where you picked up the circle cutter? I am from Southern Alberta
Always great to meet a fellow Albertan, thanks for watching :) I purchased that from Japan I think over 5 years ago now.
I had this same model kit when I was 17. I did it in the post war colors
Excellent work! If I have to give a suggestion that would be try to varnish the clear parts (e.g dip them in future or pledge)
Another awesome build but that recording at the end put a lump in my throat
I’m building the Lindbergh Line Nose Art 1:64 B-17 with the Thunderbird nose decal
What kind of air brush do you have mb looks stunning
Incredibly nice build enjoyed watching you work. Also if you stated I missed it, what type of air brush are you using? Again awesome build.
Thanks John, it's a Tamiya 0.2mm HG Airbrush.
@@rebelsatcloudnine
Thank you
What a long way from that old ‘60’s era ‘Belle’ I built in the ‘70’s. Lottsa’ detail.
Really grand built, Jared. I’d read you build another? That says a lot.
Hey are you still doing the live thing? Am I missing the announcements? Do I need to join your blog to get hooked up?
Hi Dave, thanks, I've got the Airfix kit, the new-tooled version I just haven't purchased new decals for it yet. The B-17 and Spitfire are tied for my all-time favourite aircraft. In a lot of ways I'm looking forward to the Airfix kit to see how it compares to the Revell. No I haven't done any live streams, but I'm thinking about doing one soon. I've had a few people ask me this lately. I'll post a video a few days ahead when one is planned however :)
@@rebelsatcloudnine that’ll work.
Be well in these upside down times
Great work! Hello from BC! May I ask what airbrush / needle combo you used for the close-up work?
Hi Kevin, it's a Tamiya HG 0.2mm airbrush, I used it for the entire build.
Thank you!
This is the first time I've seen the new-tool F. Had so much hope at the start...then saw this F also has an astrodome on top of the nose like every other F that comes with Memphis Belle decals. The MB was an early F and had no dome! I noticed when you showed the painting of the nose that you had corrected this; You didn't show how much was involved in doing that. Revell really should have retooled the whole nose to also get rid of the chin turret hole. Did you use wire for the aerials.
BTW; All the "talk" on the war-time MB film was dubbed by the crew in the States, the original recording for the mission were lost during transport back to the US.
That came out real nice rebel great work as usual :) The Memphis Belle movie you mention in the description, is that the 1990 movie with David Lithgow and Harry Connick Jr? If so, I've loved that movie my whole life and still is my number one favorite of all time :)
Thank you, I agree the 1990 movie is one of the my all-time favourites. I watched it all the time when I was younger, and it was the reason I got into hobby modeling with my Dad :)
It's not clear to me from the video but it looks like some kind of black paint product was applied to the fuselage near the 10 minute mark before the Army Painter gray brush primer was applied. What was the black product? Is the primer a two-part system or is that another product entirely? Would the plane turn out alright if the gray primer was applied directly?
Great video with a great end product! This has been super helpful while I follow along.
What are the green streaks supposed to be ?
I'm surprised that you didn't marble the olive drab paint like you did the ventral side.
When you were doing the mottling I noticed you didn't have the end of the airbrush screwed on, was there a reason for that?
Nice 👍🏻
That’s fantastic 👍is this the decal nightmare extra thin recovery B-17? Great job🍺
Yes the very same, I only spotted some very slight silvering on a few stencils, it worked 99% of the time which was really great. It was an eyesore before that.
It’s great to see it finished in all its glory. Well done.
What’s your opinion of this Revell kit? Is the air fix better?
@@PeteCourtier I think that the design of this kit is excellent and they sections of adding the nose panels is a really cool idea. However the execution of the model left a lot to be desired. I struggled with this kit a lot, that being said I've seen many others build the G model and have great success. I bought the Airfix kit earlier this summer and I might build it soon. I noticed that the shape of the nose is really more narrow than it should be, and a lot of the design is an almost identical copy to the Revell kit. That being said, without having built the Airfix kit, I think that it's going to be a better fit, I just need to find some new decals for it first.
@ottoVonSkidmarck DUDE, I love your username!
stevethefishdotnet thanks mate😂🍺
I love 1:03
They were not just metal they were guardians of freedom.
Agreed :)
Great detail I got to see the Memphis Bell at Patterson air base 2016. Check out 3 Days in May 1943
Thanks Roger, Im really thrilled that the Belle has been properly restored, I'd really love to see it one day.
fantástico parabéns
That was really great.....what glue was you using with the orange lid thanks?
Shoot, I forgot to add that in, that's Mr. Hobby, Mr. Cement. I started using that instead of Tamiya, it fid it to be a bit more corrosive to styrene.
@@rebelsatcloudnine thanks!!
