What was better about 70s cinema, is pretty much exactly how Ron described it. Of course some great films still get made, but the marketplace simply doesn’t allow for the volume of great films and filmmakers to thrive like they did in the 70s. Part of it is also simply that the studios didn’t have all of their formulas set in stone when the technology finally started allowing filmmakers to shoot on location, and so they simply allowed to artists to run the show. But once they dialed the formulas in, the studio suits started running the show again and it all became much more purely profit driven. Same thing happens to music and radio.

I love Ron Perlman, I can't get enough of him on screen. City of Lost Children, Alien: Resurrection, Island of Dr Moreau, Hellboy-every single time he is on screen is a pleasure to watch and he performs so well you totally believe his role. He has instant authority behind each role he plays-I can't say enough about him. With regard to the discussion at 27:20 - I think the reason movies aren't made in the way of the 70s is because studios stopped making dramatic films for general audiences. The point at which I noticed this the most was after Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. After these, the Franchise was the star and so the studios (forgive the crudeness) began to Franchise F*** every story they could. Sci-fi and Fantasy had ample serial stories to do this too as a backbone. Fitting well into Sci-Fi and fantasy are comics, which are cheap stories with...many times...so-so stories (compared to a well-written drama). The modern dramas are most of the time relegated to smaller productions (10 million or less a lot of times) and it now feels like the folks that make these go for a reaction instead of a satisfying picture. So, I think drama writers feel now that if they can get any reaction from the audience, any at all: disgust, repulsion, outrage, depression, it excuses them from having to make the whole story of the movie cohesive and satisfying to the viewer. Those Dramas aren't made for general audiences now, they are only made for people who go to these dramas, and I think many of this much smaller audience now, goes for the reaction effect instead of quality/rounded story. We don't get The House of Sand of Fog anymore, we don't get Notes on a Scandal, we don't get The Right Stuff, we don't get The English Patient, we don't get Dog Day Afternoon. Those movies are like, from a different era; they are gone with the wind. Every now and then we get traces of them-like Argo or The Gift, but they are certainly not anywhere near the presence they used to have-nor can I see them re-establishing themselves. The continual loss of attention spans, intellect (the vocabulary and diction in many of these new movies feels like they were written for a 5th grader) and inability to emotionally process unfair dramatic situations portrayed in film will (I hope I'm wrong) stop these kinds of pictures from ever being made in the US. One of the best interviews, informative and eye opening, we talk about anything from his career to his interests and still be entertained. Up there with the gene Simmons interview
He looks much more distinguished now, but back in the day he had the right 'look' for playing that hunchback oddball in the 14th Century monastery in THE NAME OF THE ROSE. Great movie -- and I hear it's been made into a miniseries on one of the streaming channels.
God, what a magnificent actor. Glad that he's done with cigars. Hope he has a much longer career. I'll watch anything this actor chooses to grace with his acting skills.
This man has a history being scary and menacing. As usual the relaxed interview erases all that. I know that history. he is real polite and very pleasant to talk to. Quit smoking😊
I have loved Ron Perlman since Beauty and the Beast, seen lots of films and always thought he brought so much warmth, depth and humanity to his performances, that just makes me want to see and learn more. Please Ron, do this and I really hope Finding your roots or Who do you think you are? see the treasure that he is, and give him/us this! By the way, having grown up with him on-screen if feels a bit weird, but he is just sexy, cool and clever, on fire even! ❤🔥😋😜
I used to love Beauty & the Beast & other roles he's done since the 80s, but after Sons of Anarchy & the 2016 where all of Pedowood went insane, he became a massive, rambling tool on twitter - one of the worst of them like Mark Hamill, deNiro, Stephen King & a bunch of other celebs. He's absolute dogshit & dead to me now. I have to FF past anything I see him in as an extra.
I’m on board with Maher most of the time BUT, I am a struggling American retired person.. He has the privilege of living in his wealthy neighborhood and traveling to one nighter gigs by private plane (and I assume private cars too..)..

Michelle Pfeiffer really flexed her claws as Catwoman in my opinion, but I agree that "super powers" have gone astray over the years. Thank you. This was an awesome conversation.
Another great episode. I love getting to know celebrities that I wouldn't know about otherwise, because till now I only knew them from their show business personas and the media. It's so interesting and entertaining to get to know who they are as people. I've been pleasantly surprised many times. So many great entertaining stories! And even with their celebrity lifestyles, these podcasts can make them down to earth and relatable. Of course, my favorite, with this and Real Time, is always hearing what Bill has to say, the substance, and the great laughs. Omg, the joke about Titanic still has me laughing!
No, he's not a "badass actor" he just plays himself in everything, obviously. Same with so many actors that get high praise like DeNiro, Nicholson, etc. A great actor can make you think they are someone completely different, Johnny Depp, Jared Leto, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, etc.

Love Ron! Great show! Great conversation! Thanks Bill!! 😘
The conversation about Hollywoood and the creative process was fascinating.
Ron Perlman is such a character. Bill's right, in movies like "The City of Lost Children" he was so bizarre looking you wondered if he was even human! ;-) Now though, he looks like a leading man. Great actor.
One of the best interviews, informative and eye opening, we talk about anything from his career to his interests and still be entertained. Up there with the gene Simmons interview
Very Good Show! When I saw how short it was I thought it might be a dud but Ron Perlman was an excellent guest and I wish there was more!
And for anyone who wants to look for it 17:26and 18:31 Shiiiisss i gotra see that one. Bill Maher's Irish and Jewish background
Ron Perlman is amazing!!!1! Thank you, Bill! PLEASE have him back!!!
nope
“Titanic 2: Is it me?”😂 I actually laughed out loud
He looks much more distinguished now, but back in the day he had the right 'look' for playing that hunchback oddball in the 14th Century monastery in THE NAME OF THE ROSE. Great movie -- and I hear it's been made into a miniseries on one of the streaming channels.
Great interview, you look amazing Ron! Bill was pouring you the shortest drinks.
Guess this was recorded before the strike and before Ron made the threat towards the movie executive 😅
Bill Maher changed glasses. Better than the previous one.
This should have been longer . Great chemistry between these two.
God Bless Billy Wilder, the man got it, over 40 years ago.
Great interview Guys!
The gen z folks are perfectly fine with never having to leave the house
I love him in City Of Lost Children
Pearlman looks like the missing link between man and ape. I always thought he was perfect to play Robert Neville in an I Am Legend adaptation.
Had fun!!!!!
Sons of Anarchy is one of my favorite shows, and he’s incredible in the show.
God, what a magnificent actor. Glad that he's done with cigars. Hope he has a much longer career. I'll watch anything this actor chooses to grace with his acting skills.
Bill, keep bringing the old white guys on the show. So much more interesting than the hip hoppers.
Aw, that was so short! His voice is so smooth, I wanted more!
Been enamored since City of Lost Children 🥰
I have seen many Randoms but Ron Perlman was really a pearl
I loved his Hellboy!
This man has a history being scary and menacing. As usual the relaxed interview erases all that. I know that history. he is real polite and very pleasant to talk to. Quit smoking😊
The TDS w/this goof f is hilarious!
Donate money to that poor poor millionaire oh wait they don't take rubles
Supporting the disgraced former president is funnier
Him and Bill are on team homo
Not that there is anything wrong with that
@robertsaul234 supporting an America hating child sniffer is even worse 🤡
@@drwhowhatwhere how long will Trump be in rhat deranged head?
He was so great on Sons of Anarchy.
I have loved Ron Perlman since Beauty and the Beast, seen lots of films and always thought he brought so much warmth, depth and humanity to his performances, that just makes me want to see and learn more. I really hope he goes in search of his roots and hopefully we can follow along if some of the shows that does this realise they just have to. I can imagine there will be some great storys to tell, fates to shed some light upon and to get to see Ron find out and react, I would love it.
I recently read the original 1911 novel of 'The Quest for Fire' and enthusiastically recommend it. The world-building alone is amazing.
The quest for fire is epic
Thank you Mr. Perlman for guiding me to Billy Wilder's AFI speech.
Ron Perlman is a legend
Good one.
Ron Perlman is kind of a man’s man. Can play a tough guy, but has many layers to him. Great actor!
Ron nailed Clay Morow in SOA!! I actually became a HUGE fan of his watching that show!!!!! Ron is the man!!! ❤
You're The Man Bill Maher!
so lame
Glad you guys are staying hydrated!
I’m on board with Maher most of the time BUT, I am a struggling American retired person.. He has the privilege of living in his wealthy neighborhood and traveling to one nighter gigs by private plane (and I assume private cars too..)..
And he is courting the right wing now. Because he fears them. Kid rock? Really!

I'm not a big Trump guy but Ronnie boy hasn't been the same since 2016, it broke him and he has had a serious case of TDS. I hope he can defeat his mental illness and find the help that he clearly needs.
You sound like a yuge Trump guy.
Sad but spot on. I think all the actors turned down for Celebrity Apprentice can't get over it.
@@BluntforceJ Nope but I don't lose my mind over one-person, little buddy.
You obviously have RPDS.
@@nw1750 Poor little buddy.
Michelle Pfeiffer really flexed her claws as Catwoman in my opinion, but I agree that "super powers" have gone astray over the years.
Thank you. This was an awesome conversation.
He will always be Clay Morrow to me.

War ... War never changes ...
Really enjoyed him in Blade 2! Just seeing him play up against Wesley Snipes was great!!!!!
No. No. No. he should have been included in that movie. One of his lesser roles
Quest for Fire is awesome and Ron was great in that movie.
this guy is a badass actor
No, he's not a "badass actor" he just plays himself in everything, obviously. Same with so many actors that get high praise like DeNiro, Nicholson, etc. A great actor can make you think they are someone completely different, Johnny Depp, Jared Leto, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, etc.
That was enjoyable.
Just watched Billy's speech. Man was he spot on.
Bill, those old widescreen films are rendered on blu-ray now, and they are FANTASTIC because now we have the screens to view them. GET UP TO DATE BILL!
I like this guy Ron Perlman.
Perlman is great!
There's old Bill reminding me once again of my drunken aunt everybody would try to avoid after dinner getting caught alone with her and her verbal diarrhea
No one making you watch...
It’s a comment
You always have the" no one making you watch" guy on the internet... I guess if you actually watch Bill Maher you would know his stance on comedy and constantly calling out those people that say" no one making you watch"...and it's nobody is making you watch or no one's making you watch so if no one is making me watch then what's the problem
@@p40tomahawk41 I don't know. I'm normal and I don't watch shows I don't like. I also wouldn't cry in the comments about the host of a show I'm watching that I don't like.
I just wouldn't watch it.
Oh, P.S I've been watching Bills show since the late 90's so ya I do "actually" watch his stuff.
Ok..thanks KMan.... I also don't watch shows that I don't like but since I've been following Bill Maher ever since his early comic days to Politically Incorrect to real time I watched the show because I enjoy it and I enjoy the humor and as Bill Maher says ,and since you watch it so much about what the fuss is over comedy .x3 tips buddy ...either move out of the basement of your mom's house, get a girlfriend or get a better name than Kman buddy we're not living in the 80s...and who the fuck are you to tell me what to watch.... because I can guarantee you one thing if you were actually standing in front of me none of that crap would have come out of your mouth.?. And since you say you've been watching it from the 90s are you sure you're watching Bill Maher cuz you certainly don't sound like somebody's that's been watching from the 90s
