Daniel, you were more than fair. You wanted to show the seller the list of how you arrived at the offer, and that shows honesty, transparency, and respect. I know in the back of your mind this isn't charity; this is business. Can you resell these coins and make a profit? Since you made the offer, the answer was yes. You know what moves because you've been around for a while. This is also a small investment. How quickly can you recoup the $160, using the profits to purchase more inventory? All in all, like I said, you were more than fair. You did well, Daniel, Obi-Wan Kenobi of numismatics.

If you did not have a YT channel I am sure that you would probably just offered for the non-pocket change stuff and I would not blame you a bit. The misinformation that is floating out in the world about "Rare" and "mint error" and "no mint mark" frustrates me soooooo much. You're a better man than I am Daniel Malone.

From the UK here. I watch your videos quite a lot as I have a reasonable amount of US coins in my collection. I’ve never commented in the past, as I just watch to educate myself. However, I felt I should post this time, as your honesty always comes across, and this video just reinforces it! Well done, and thanks. Keep it up!

Problem with this for you is, its a No Win. It takes 30min+ of your time which is woeth at least $50 an hour and at best you have to take 2/3rds to bank. And you may make $10 profit reselling what you bought. So basically you are providing a community service.

Good information. Recently my cousins' husband died and she wanted me to sell his coin collection. She thought it was worth a few thousand dollars. I check the coins value in the current red book and told her the coins were worth less than she thought. Went to three different coin shops and they all said pretty much the same as you. A lot of the coins were pocket change and the ones that were silver were very worn. She took the best of the three offers which was way lower than she hoped for.

People will also keep coins, because they think that they coins it MIGHT be worth something. Or they may hold onto a damaged coin just because they like the way someone made it look. Those inheriting coins of this type need to understand that their loved one collected coins as a hobby of interest and not an investment from which they could retire early.

These videos are so informative, I don't want my family to get excited about a collection passed down to them only to be be let down. I've kept some of these same coins thinking they maybe something but thanks to your honest educational videos I'm gaining the knowledge of what to keep and what to spend. I bet this scenario appears at your store often, it must be hard to constantly break the news. Hopefully they watch your videos where we can all see how kind, thoughtful and honest you are. Being informed and doing your research is key. When my father died and I went thru his collection and realized that he had basically change like you said. Some silver coins. Some silver dollars bills. Im keeping these to pass down as something from my dad to give the great grandkids. I'm a coin collector because of my father and I'm hoping the next few generations gets hooked too. I'm the Aunt that gives them money/silver coins for birthdays, christmas, good grades, etc....

My friend bought a large collection of Whitman albums most of it was change literally I spent a few hours pulling out wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, war nickels, silver out. Then I dumped the face value stuff into a jug. It’s the sad reality of this. You gotta take the good with the bad and move onto the next deal. Sometimes the pocket change stuff is very time consuming.

While I was watching, I did a fast calculation of what I think I would pay as a fair price if someone brought this to me. I came up w $165, which is very close to what Daniel had. I would be hoping to make maybe 5%-10% profit selling the salable items thru my coin club auction.

You were very fair and honestly overly generous. You might make $5 on that Morgan, a few dollars on the 90%... Everything else is going to sit for ages and while yes, you will make money on it... you'll likely take a year or more to even get your $160 back.
Not many people are actively looking for things like bulk indian heads or buffalo nickels, at least not at the prices you gotta get to stay profitable. Plus all the labor... It's a good thing you got this youtube channel to subsidize that buy haha.
It's deals like this that stink for dealers... because often times customers think you are trying to rip them off, when in reality you are doing the opposite... you are overpaying to help them through a tough time. That was honestly nice of you to help them out, hopefully they know you were extremely fair.

As a youngster in the late 1960s I took an interest in collecting coins from circulation supplemented from occasional visits to a local coin dealer. This video brings to mind a memory from the coin dealer. Around 1969 I was there with my parents when someone came in wanting to see what they could get for their $1.00 silver certificate. I remember overhearing the dealer tell them he would give them 95 cents, or they could spend it in his store for a dollar.

Working in a coin shop - I see these low value common coins coming in - and some people have high expectations - and by the time you have separated the common silver coins from the rest- and spent time on dates and condition - you as the dealer are already on a losing streak - not to mention the fake gold and silver coins - the argumentative customer who saw "" these high value coins on Ebay "" - and aļl the variations in between - it is simply NOT all joy dealing with coins - and sometimes angry customers

But he forgot to mention the awesome things you can and will possibly find in pocket change. I know this first hand from experience. I have found three different double die reverses in my pocket change. No BS, found a Sally Ride 25cent DDR , a Maya Angelou DDR and a one cent 2009 Lincoln Formative years DDR... So there's some awesome finds in pocket change, just gotta separate the common from the uncommon...

I was a military antique dealer and did very well. There were some problems. When I started advertising, most people brought me junk and wanted top dollar. I tried to tell them that a surplus uniform in size small is unsellable. So it's totally worthless. The they accuse you of ripping them off. I don't know how I did, I didn't offer to pay anything. 9 out of 10 transactions were a total waste of time. I had a buddy with a brick and mortar store. He had tons of junk come in, but when something good came in, it was spectacular. But he had to be there 6 days a week! I don't think it was worth it.

I needed new checks this week and they told me it would be $28 or $29 for a "refill"... my other two banks fall all over themselves to help. But those banks will only take rolled coins and won't sell me coins.
I am about to stop coin hunting because it is too frustrating and now costly... the bank now charging me 3% to run coins through their machine is also now charging 3% on boxes wrapped coins. These fees hit on 8/1.

The only coins that come from the ground shinny are gold and silver.

I think as a dealer you should buy any coins if they're not happy you should send them to another dealer and just ask him to come back if they get the same price from the other dealer

Just look at the UA-cam comments talking about super rare coins. There's almost always a handful of people complaining they have that exact same coin but the video doesn't tell them where they can sell it. It's kinda sad but also maddening.

But they don’t really have it so dealers turn them away, or they’re from another country and have no idea they don’t have a rare coin.

Out of curiosity, were there any coins in there that were victims to being in a washer and dryer where their rims are wider and flat? Have you ever had someone bring you one of those and assume it's an error or something?

Things are tough for some people, just getting by. I noticed that more and more coin shops and they even go to banks and they want old sterling silverware, broken jewelry, some have a few collector coins ( well it's silver maybe a little gold and they weigh it cut them a check or cash ). Just looking at it you know it's going to be melted. It's sad.

You're like me and naturally have a huge heart that cares for others and you even take the time to put yourself in their shoes. It's a blessing and a curse. Regardless, you're a great person who helps make the world a better place.

Yeah, that's a bit of a sticky wicket. It's good that the person wasn't antagonistic, but some people do think you're trying to con them. So is it best to just pass, make an offer that might offend them, or just try to cherrypick the good stuff? What's gonna lead to the most positive outcome? Tough call.
If you run shop, then you can use the pocket change as ammo for the till. Saves a trip to the bank for both parties so long as you're not buying up more than you can use 😅

My dad left us his collection of every coin minted in 1942, unc or better (when possible). I understand what drove him to complete the collection, bc I inherited that collector’s mindset. Just have no idea what to do with his collection.

Have it professionally appraised without intent of selling, then go from there.
