Thank you, Daniel! Unfortunately not every coin dealer is as honest and forthright and ethical as you are. Sellers and buyers both need to self-educate and be cognizant of their own interests!

This all is applicable to selling ANYTHING. You must know the subject with more than a hobby interest. You want to maximize your product and get the best that the market will bear. If you don't want to learn your product to sell then find someone you trust to help you. Great stuff Daniel.

My typical process for selling is 1: Know exactly what I have. 2: Before I look up the price I determine the grade and always go with the more conservative grade if it's a borderline grade. 3: research book prices and ebay sold listing. 4: put the price tag at 80% of that for more desirable coins and 70% for less desirable. If it's going up in the club auction that range can be anywhere from face value for the reserve and up to 80% for certed coins.

Thanks Daniel. I started off buying junk Morgan & Peace dollars. I was stacking for weight, not collectability. Most of my silver is in one ounce bars & rounds. I don't need to sell now (already retired), but if / when silver gets over $30.00 or more per ounce I will go to a local coin shop and sell most if not all I have.

Excellent video! I saved it to remind myself of what needs to be done to sell coins.
Just one other thought here. I have sold coins on Ebay, and it is possible to make a Little bit of money doing things honesty, and correctly...yet do not think you will make a ton of money.
It is just that when you think of the labor making the picture look properly, labor writing the description, labor to package, price of packaging, Ebay fees, Paypal fees, and Auction hassle...you might do better getting your coins together and selling them to a honest Dealer.

For all ,and I mean all , people thinking about buying and/or selling coins, I would highly recommend the photo grading books. Daniel is an amazing channel. He does exactly what he claims to be talking about in the title. No click bait, no hyper fixation on some of his or their coins and no salesman BS that other channels would try to shove down your throat, anything to sell you that coin or rounds or bars.
If you need dependable information he would be definitely the person to go to. But after some of his videos, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets so busy trying to answer all of the questions then he may not always have time for you.
Do not ever buy from tv ads, chances are that they are selling you hyped up coins that are overpriced and over graded. Don’t buy from you tube channels that try to sell metals based on BS SHTF (shit hits the fan) or some other kind of financial meltdown, where currencies like the dollar or euro, go down to almost nothing in terms of value. Or any other type of ARMAGEDDON where you will need gold and/or silver to make purchases.
Instead study up on currency fluctuations, look up for precious metal prices and history of their highs and lows of things that you might buy to see you through the cultural disasters. At least if you learn about them you can make an educated guess on what has happened in the past and what might happen in the future and I use the word MIGHT with a bit of tongue in cheek. I mean ,don’t believe everything that you think that you “know”.

Thank you for the informative video, Daniel.
Recently, I was interested in a coin auction by a seller I see quite a lot of on Ebay. The photo's in the auction looked almost like negatives. They most likely revealed bag marks, etc., but displayed nothing in the way of luster, so I contacted him and asked him about the luster of the coin and/or whether it had been cleaned or dipped. His response to me was they handle so many coins that he didn't know, but he told me I should assume that all of his coins are cleaned or dipped. He told me he had a return policy, so if I didn't like the coin, I could send it back.
-I declined to bid on the auction and don't plan on participating in any of his future auctions.

I sell coins thru my coin club auction, which resolves a lot of these issues. This is because the guy that lists the lots in the auction does his own grading and estimated value of the coins. When I submit my coins to him, I put my idea of the grade and sometimes the estimated price also but he just uses his own opinion anyway in the listing. I trust his grading and estimates because I think he is better at it than I am. Usually, but not always, his estimated price is higher than mine, which is another reason why I trust him. Also, there is no need to take pictures of the coins because the coins are all displayed at the meeting so everyone can examine them for themselves. Seeing what coins sell for at an auction gives you a good idea of what the coins are worth. I generally get better prices for my coins thru the club auction than I would get from a dealer. Another of the many reasons to join a coin club!

I’ve been a collector for several decades. When I have a third party graded coin that’s high quality, but there is no price guide for it because it’s an ancient or medieval or foreign coin - but it is really nice mint state or higher, I have sold my own coins online. I have not cheated or claimed the coin was something it’s not. (I have hyped the positives it actually had - like the third party mint state grade, and/or the actual population or rarity of the coin.) I’ve sold because I had purchased a higher grade or the coin no longer fit in my collection. I never lost money, because the “money” is made on the purchase end not the selling side - and I’m a careful buyer (unless I so desperately want a coin that I’m never going to be selling it!) I’m not selling as a business, but I certainly can sell my own coins when I need to.

Everything you said here was spot on. I’m fairly new to the hobby and like everyone else watching this video got “hooked” to it pretty quickly once I discovered it. I’m taking my time, learning as much as I can with the little time I have because life is so busy. I know there’s so much to learn and would never kid myself that I’ve learned enough and now I can start moving big numbers. Slow and easy wins the race in this instance. And dear heavens, DO NOT PUT YOUR COIN IN A SCANNER. I see people with ebay businesses using a scanner. I have learned what a good coin looks like in a scanner but most people don't. I love a picture that appears like when you look at it under a lamp because that's how you will see it. It is not going to look like the "true view" pic the grading company sent.

At this time I don’t pan on selling my coins but if I decide to sell any I will consult with the proper companies so that I don’t say anything wrong or accidentally hurt someone monetary wise.

This could all be summed up with one single concept which seems to be rapidly becoming obsolete:
Integrity - or the lack thereof.

I am taking videos of my error collection so I can sell the whole thing. Coin collecting has changed a lot and so have I. I am going to sell it for 40k, it is worth far more graded but I don't have the time, love or resources for it anymore unfortunately. Never thought this day would come.

Is there any way to have someone removed and banned from selling on Ebay? I bought a 1964 SMS Set a couple of years ago and sent them in back in August of this year and as it turned out, they were swapped out for a proof set. PCGS graded them all as proofs. Your thoughts? I consider that fraud!

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  7 місяців тому

No one has a 1964 SMS set to sell, they're all proof sets, the fraud was calling a proof set an SMS set. You thought you stole a deal and was going to make bank but you bought proofs thinking they're SMS. I don't know what to tell you. 1964 SMS sets where not issued to collectors or to the public at all. So no one has one to sell unless it's already in a PCGS holder and for sell at a major auction house.

Buy a 2024 Red Book price guide or use an online price guide to look up their value.

I've sold a number of items (not coins) on eBay. I found out the hard way that I need to limit my words to just a couple of facts and then let the photos tell the rest of the story for me. If I did sell coins, I would say what the coin is (US dime, quarter, etc.), and year. If it is in a holder, I would mention the grade on it. A potential buyer would need to look at the pictures to determine all other details. I would simply make too many beginner errors if I described it.

💯% right my friend, great video Dan. I have discovered 6 new varieties.
I also sell on ebay, telling the truth about the coins your selling is a must!

I do see manipulation of images on ebay more than I should. They are usually Morgan Dollars and they lighten the coin so much with Photoshop you can't see the details on the coin such as nicks. Another tactic is to say they are DMPL coins with 30" mirrors.
