One of the key advantages of the triangular lens arrangement, as used in iPhone Pro models for several years, is that the physical distance between all the lenses is equal. This uniform spacing minimizes the “jumping” effect when switching between zoom levels, resulting in smoother transitions. In contrast, the design shown in the video for the iPhone 17, where the lenses are aligned vertically in portrait orientation, raises significant doubts. During landscape video recording, this arrangement would result in the lenses being stacked vertically, which is far from ideal for three-dimensional video capture. Effective 3D imaging-such as depth mapping or stereoscopic video-requires lenses to be spaced horizontally in landscape mode to provide the appropriate stereo base for depth perception. A vertical alignment sacrifices this functionality and makes it much harder to achieve accurate depth mapping. In comparison, the iPhone 16’s design, with lenses positioned horizontally in landscape mode, is far more practical. This horizontal layout supports advanced features like 3D video capture and computational photography, while also maintaining smooth zoom transitions. Frankly, I struggle to see any benefits to the vertical lens arrangement suggested for the iPhone 17. Instead, I see significant drawbacks, particularly for professional applications like 3D video capture. It’s hard to believe Apple would adopt such a design, given the compromises it entails.

Anyone who doesn’t have an iPhone or hasn’t for the past X amount of years always complains we still have a ‘notch’ on our phones but the under display cameras look awful and the last thing Apple wants to do is downgrade their devices. Furthermore, it’s because Apple took a different approach to Face ID which was to use LiDAR and not the camera which allows it to work at any orientation, day or night and much more accurately than any other camera could have done it (at the time anyway). So complain all you want, I like Dynamic Island, it’s useful and the Face ID shouldn’t be sacrificed unless it going to work just as well if not better under the display and I hope their designs surrounding it don’t get completely removed when they finally get that clean display they’re pining after.

I’ve heard that with this new phone that you’ll be able to chance the lens aperture like you can on a camera. What do you know about that? Great video.
I don’t think that’s happening, Apple just added a “camera control” it doesn’t work for spatial video if the camera is horizontal. It has to be stacked vertically. Too uncomfortable for the that I think, they wouldn’t.
To me, why not have a phone with all cameras contained within the body and have a flat surface. It’s more practical. Easier to clean the surface, flat on tables, more protection on camera lens too.
Um? So, getting rid of spacial video? The thing that they repositioned the camera module on the normie iphone for. Also, with that cylon style module, that would create some negative space at the top of the phone and shrink the battery and mainboard. Idk.
