Mike was always the quietest of the three, but I'm coming to appreciate just how brilliant he was/is. I consider myself to be pretty smart, but anything Mike writes I have to read over several times to get the gist of it. Seems like brilliant people are just quiet and distant, whether they mean to be or not. Still water runs deep.

I gotta say the male interviewer was doing his best to do a decent interview, you can tell he was a true fan.. if it would've been just him and the guys it would have been a better experience for everyone.

mike seemed so quiet at this interview, he said a few words , but they other 3 guys were more vocal, its a shame that he quit the tour without letting the guys know ahead of time, im sure he had his reasons, but that is now in the past, but he was doing his own thing by then, so it wasnt because of the money, you hear so many rumors about what happened, you dont know what to believe.but i will always love them and the happiness they brought to my life all these years later.love ya guys.

I grew up to the Monkees. I was a total Beatles fan so telling friends as a young boy you like the Monkees wasn't the thing you would do well unless you wanted a girl to like you. 🙂 I even wanted my name changed to John but my mom laughed and said sorry..No! But I would watch the Monkees every Sat with my big sister. It wasn't till the Last train was noted as a anti Vietnam war song which then was now it's OK to like the Monkees! But one song that I loved from day 1 to this day not just for a Monkees song but of all songs is You just may be the one, sung by Mike. Also if you watch Mikes audition you could tell he had his own attitude as well as Davey did..

They may not have been on the best terms at this point in their career, but they look their best here. Everyone's hair and fashion choices are extremely stylish and hip.

You've gotta love UA-cam for being able to view all these interviews 16 years later and see the seeds of what went wrong in '97. Fans, the press, and I expect the band had high hopes for what a tour with all four of them could be. But the reality was far from those hopes. The interviewers often fell short with their questions, Nez was out of practice playing and singing the Monkees' material night after night to large audiences and all of them were over 50, far from the young lads of '60s TV.

It appears time has gotten the best of this film/tape, but enjoy the interview. Is restoration even possible. Thanks so much.

@shatterdwing I don't think he had any reason to be bitter-he had a dozen critically acclaimed solo albums and a few hits (Joanne, Rio.) He also had a fairly high profile in the media up until this point-I certainly remember him being on TV a decent amount promoting his film and music projects-he only dropped out of the public eye after this. I just think that, like the late George Harrison, he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

@shatterdwing I don't think they need to be 'Monkees historians' but I think they should know more about them than 'four guys who used to be on television and may or may not have played music.' Sorry if I offended you with my blanket statement-I'm certainly no expert on TV talk shows around the world for the past 15 years, so I had no right insulting those of the UK. And with Davy's passing there's no point in arguing about it. We'll never see all 4 of them together again now.

You could tell at this point Mike had checked out and his heart just wasn't in the band anymore. Apparently the bad reviews had come around to him at this point and that, along with the rigors of the road and typical tensions between band members who spend a lot of time around each other, no doubt soured him on the Monkees reunion. Plus he had plenty of lucrative business ventures and didn't need to deal with the hassles of being a Monkee. A shame that he still didn't try to make it through the U.S. tour though since I would liked to have seen them live as a quartet in the states.

I think it would have been hard to be around him at this time....thank God he seem to lighten up towards The Monkees as he aged and realized how much his fans loved him as a Monkee...

@RhybeckahNesmithFan I guess that's what happens when some of us grow up - we get more serious.

MIke quit after they finished their European tour... 'Justus' was good but not great (unlike 'Good Times!' which is a GREAT album)
He has always seemed to be the leader of the crew and a bit standoffish from the other 3, but nevertheless he IS a vital part of the band... like I said, the leader...
This interview reminds me the old "video" for 'Daily Nightly'...

Rock n Roll HoF needs to make these guys already (along w/ DM and the Cure)
    The Monkees love!

This is hard to watch because of Mike's bad attitude....

    • @demonprince2646

Mike didn’t have a “bad attitude”, he was just checked out by this point. Things within the bad weren’t going great by this point and everyone knew it. Plus he was extremely busy running multiple businesses and extremely tired. Things weren’t going well in the band with Peter either (he was eventually fired by Micky and Davy) so tensions were running high. But they all still came on and did stuff and it’s not like he didn’t answer their questions. So there’s no reason to be harsh on him when he didn’t do anything wrong or disrespectful.
