This was SO helpful!!!! I'm a brand new knitter trying a little bit of a more challenging pattern and I was so stumped by the directions. Thank you, thank you!!
That is so awesome to hear. That's why I make these videos!
You are very pleasant to listen to. Ty for your info I've just stumbled across your channel and really like it.
I'm so glad you like my videos and hope to continue making stuff you like.
Best video of its kind. Very thorough explanation. Thank you.
Thank you! This is finally a video that explains WS and RS that actually makes sense!!!
Glad it was helpful and that it clicked for you!
1. Love your shirt,
2. LOVE your sweet, positive energy,
3. Thank you so much, this video saved me when I was in a stitch! 😏
Yay! Thank you!
Very informative and complete explanation - great teacher!
I am so glad it was helpful.
This video definitely cleared up some things for me. I am not advanced enough to read my knitting other than knits and purls. So, I will rewatch this once I start doing yarn overs and increases/decreases. Thank you!
Baby steps baby!
Hi is that furniture I see 🙌🙌🙌😁 good to see your getting your stuff ! Thanks for the video, still new to knitting and trying to figure things out
Yes, furniture! I am glad that the video might be useful to you!
Definitely helpful! Now I can read my 4-row knitting pattern I just started.
Fantastic! Learning how to read your knitting is a challenge, but once you have it down it makes things so much easier.
You are always so helpful. Thank you!
Happy to help!
This is a very informative and useful video.
Because I cannot see my stitches at all, I have gotten into the habit of marking the right side of the work as soon as I can.
I also note which side the tail from my cast on resides on as I begin the first row. For the long tail cast-on the tail is to my right; for the knitted cast-on the tail is to my left. These are the cast-ons I use most frequently, but the method should work for any cast-on.
I also sometimes use the tail of the cast-on as a row counter by tying small knots in the tail. The knotted yarn method can also be used with a separate length of yarn which I pin to the right side of the work. For more complicated counts I keep track in a document on my computer where I can enlarge and increase contrast of the numbers.
I would love to be able to use a row counter, but the numbers are too small and/or too indistinct for me to see. I have yet to find either a counter I can see or a talking row counter.
You do such a good job of narrating your videos that I can usually follow what is going on, even if I can't see the pictures at all. I really appreciate that.
What is the grey piece wirh the triangles? It looks both gorgeous and doable.
I am so happy to hear that you enjoy the videos! And you have excellent strategies for right side/wrong side identification. Not getting in the position where you need to figure it out is the best plan LOL.
The grey shawl is Irulan and I am a bit biased but I think it is lovely. Here is a link to it: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/irulan-2
Thank you for sending the link to Irulan. The shawl is so elegant. It's a sort of spacefaring Art Deco look, and it is especially appealing to me. It makes me wonder if I shouldn't have stuck with the Dune series a bit longer.
I don't know if I'll ever get to making Irulan, but I must have the pattern.
Oh my gosh, that makes so much sense. Thank you!!!
excellent article during this pandemic....easy to comprehend.
Wonderful!
Thank you! That was very helpful!
Wonderful!
Thank you 😊 You information was very helpful. 🧶
You’re welcome 😊
I would read my pattern if I knew how! Do you have a video to teach how to read the patterns?
Thank you for teaching me about rs and ws.
I have made a couple of reading patterns videos!

Yay!
Thank you. So helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful! Thanks
Yay!
Happy birds!🦜🦜
Thank you so much I think know I am more clear
Wonderful!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Happy Independence day ya'll! So happy to see your furniture has arrived. Thanks for such a interesting, and informative video.
If you're not blessed to have a independent yarn store in your area, can you suggest a good website for finding good locking stitch markers? Or, videos for making your own?
You can find locking stitch markers on Amazon here: amzn.to/2MQokkF if you have Prime the shipping is free. But pretty much any decent yarn website should have them. As far as making them, that is beyond me LOL.
WatchBarbaraKnit, I've got the plain plastic ones, I'm hoping to find some pretty ones, with the lobster claw clasp. I keep seeing the cool ones people send you, and I was hoping you'd know of a online retailer where I can find some. No worries. I may take a stab at making some myself. If I can replace the wires on "French hoop" earrings, I'm sure with a little trial and error I can make sure of my own. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hi Barbra, Is there a pattern out there for knit or crochet out there for very fine yarn or number ten crochet cotton? I have been looking for one for a long time. I'm not that good with computers, so I have probably gone past one.
I have watched heaps of videos of yours, they are wonderful.
Thankyou.
Roz Lyle . West Australia.
Hi! In the Ravelry database there are a bunch of patterns under the thread category. Ravelry is honestly the best place to find the widest variety of patterns. Hopefully this link will work for you: www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#sort=recently-popular&view=captioned_thumbs&weight=thread
Thank you for the helpful video. I have a question, not sure if I missed it in the video but do you ever have to flip sides, as in the wrong side facing you and start knitting on that if you need to do a wrong side row? Or are rs and ws in patterns just a formality to let you know what it is doing and you don't need to change sides? Sorry if this is confusing but I just want a little clarification so I get my knitting right lol
When you are knitting flat you are constantly working back and forth. Typically you begin with a Right Side row. When you get to the end of that row you have to swap the needles from hand to hand and at that point you'll be working from the wrong side. If you are working in the round you are almost always working from the right side.
If I start a row and the right side is facing me does that mean I’m starting a right side or a wrong side row
If the right side is facing and you are ready to start a new row then you will be knitting a right side row.
Thankkkkk you!
I'm glad it helped!
Hello Barbara, I'm new to knitting and my 1st project consists of all garter with changing colors of the yarn to form stripes. I'm wondering if you have any tips to ensure one doesn't accidentally switch yarn colors on the wrong side. I'm still practicing before i actually attempt to start on my project, and I've ran into this issue a few times now. Any tips at all help. Thank you for the helpful video😊
There really shouldn't be a way to accidentally switch yarn colors at the wrong time. You carry the yarn up one side only, there won't be any yarn to switch to on the other edge.
Besos. No te canses nunca... Necesitamos tus videos!!!!!
I’m knitting a blanket I have it pinned on the right side and on the wrong side nothing how do I know which stitch say to do?.
I am afraid I don't really understand what you are asking me.
I am trying to finish off my Bernat Baby Seed Stick Blanket to knit and it says that my the end of a certain amount of rows, I should be left with mine stitches to bind off but it's really at the end but my stitches haven't decreased. Is it because I am not knitting on RS? I have been keeping track using bee counter. So confused.
I am not familiar with that blanket but I googled it. The shape of this blanket is dependent on increasing for half of the blanket and then working decreases for the second half of the blanket. What kind of decreases are you using?
how can you work out which is ws or rs when doing ribbing (k2, p2) as both sides are the same. thanks for a reply Barbara.
Ribbing is one of those things that is truly reversible so it can be very challenging to tell. If it is in the round it is almost impossible except for you should know what comes directly after your beginning of round - knit or purl. So if the first two sts are knit then you are holding it wrong side out the first two sts after beginning of round would be purls. It is similar when working flat. You either start your ribbing with a knit or a purl so you have to hold your knitting so it starts that way. If you are holding it with the WS facing it will be a purl.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thank you once again
Wouldn't the tail from CO be a simpler way to tell WS from RS? Of course it will differ with which type of CO you used, I guess. Please advice or correct if I'm wrong. Thanks 😊
Indeed it can be, but I didn't want to get into the different ends that different CO would have the dangle from. And honestly, I frequently get half way through a pattern and forget which side the dangle is supposed to be on LOL.
Something I was thinking, mine is a small duck in garter stitch, so I guess it really wont matter anyway.
Thanks, can you tell me please how to differentiate between wrong and right in a 1 x 1 rib? I just knit a 1 x 1 rib headband for my baby niece and I can't tell the difference between the wrong and the right side.
A 1 x 1 rib is a truly reversible stitch pattern - there isn't a right or wrong side!
I’m doing a 1x1 rib and i have lost count on which is the rs and the ws, as I’m changing colour yarn, so I need to change colour on the ws facing me. Can you please guide me on what I need to look out for thanks
That is really tough on 1x1 ribbing because it is truly reversible. Take a look at your pattern, does the Right side row begin and end with a knit stitch? Or does it start with a Knit and end with a purl? If it begins and ends with a knit then the WS would begin and end with a purl so that would be one way to tell. Are you doing 2 row stripes? If so take a look at how many rows of each color you have, that might be helpful? Once you figure out which is the wrong and which is the right side, make sure to use a piece of yarn or locking stitch marker to mark the RS so you don't have to go through this again.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Omg, thank you so much!!!! I was working on a 2x2 rib and I couldn't for the life of me remember how to tell what was the rs.. When I first learned how to knit, I was taught to look at where your cast on tail is to determine which side is which, but that only confused me further haha.. Thanks again for this wonderful info!!!
Hello my dear, may I ask you if you could help me
In a little girl dress is ready for some reason it has a hole that mean many not only one or two stitches they many and cut the yarn
So it is for me big trouble.
Hope you could explain the way to make it
Best regards
I am really sorry, but I cannot really tell you how to fix something from this description.
Is there a pattern for the shawl? that appears at 6:54 in the "How to tell Right Side from Wrong Side in Knitting video? I checked your Ravelry site but can't tell which pattern it is.
I had to go watch it, thank you for the bookmark LOL! That is a shawl from my Dune series called Irulan: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/irulan-2 It takes one skein of fingering weight yarn and canNOT be easily made larger/smaller.
I am a new knitter, so this may be wrong but my way of telling RS from WS on Garter stitch , (using long tail C.O. /I am right handed) the 1st row /RS , will be when my tail is hanging down on the right side(as opposed to left ) after I have completed C.O. and turned the work , is this Correct ?
You can tell which is right/wrong side based on the location of your yarn tail, but keep in mind different cast-on techniques end up with the tail at a different location.
When you cast on is the tail always on the right side. How about the tail and working yarn together on same side? Does that tell you better.? 😢😢 13:00 😅For instance, I started garter on first n every row for 14 rows I'm now on row 1 wrong side?) after doing all 8 rows . Ty
I'm afraid the idea that the tail is always on the right side is not necessarily true, that depends entirely on what cast on technique you have used.
Can't u go by your starting tail?
If its on the left side or the right side of your work?
I don't have my needles on me right now, but it seems whenever im on the right side my yarn tail is on the left, and whenever I'm on the wrong side my yarn tail is on the right. Hope I explained this well.
Good video, that's the kind of videos I like watching. Your a very good teacher.
You can indeed go by your starting tail, but that is something that depends on what kind of cast on you used. I didn't want to get too confusing because you have to note which side of your knitting the tail is on at the beginning. Different cast ons end up with the tail on different sides. The idea for this video was how to figure it out if you forgot lol. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
bmandtn thanks your comment really helped me.
This is the answer i was looking for heh. Thanks
Ms Barbara, what is the right and the wrong side of the seed stitch?
Seed stitch is a truly reversible stitch - so there isn't really a right/wrong side. That said, if your pattern includes other elements you might need to make sure to mark the RS when you get started so you know which side it is for instruction purposes.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit I see, thank you alot!
Can I see your patterns
Also I would like to see how you do a bobble stitch
You can see my patterns on my website here: www.tumpedduck.com/
Is the beginning the yarn should be right side or wrong side
I'm afraid I don't quite understand your question. The yarn really isn't on the right or wrong side. When you are making a knit stitch the yarn should be behind the needle and when you are making the purl stitch it is typically in front of the needle, but that is independent of Right and Wrong side.
I haven't yet learned to knit but really want to , this is very intimidating oye oye oyeoye maybe shouldn't have watched this particular video lol
No! This is just good information to have. Once you start knitting it will make total sense.
Do start knitting. There are lots of beginner tutorials on line, both written and video. I began teaching myself a little over two years ago when I was nearly blind and getting worse. I've learned a lot, made trillions of mistakes and gained lots of personal satisfaction.
Learning to knit is worth the effort. Do be kind and patient with yourself.
Barbara is a great teacher, with her video you will learn alot. Don't be intimidated, just look here and you will be fine.
What if your pattern starts with WS, pattern calls for CO 27 stitches, Row 1 (WS): K, p, *k, p, k, p2* ,rep from * 3 more times
It really is no different, once you've completed your first RS row make sure to mark it and then you'll know which side is the RS and which is the WS.
Can’t you also tell by where the cast-on tail is? Depending on which cast-on you used?
Yes, you can. But as you say it's different for different cast-ons and I didn't want to confuse the matter LOL.
1:06 How do you knit on the wrong side in the first stitch of a pattern?
I am afraid I don't really understand your question. Could you elaborate?
How about the wrong side on a seed stitch?
Seed stitch is one of those patterns that is completely reversible. Your best bet for these types of stitches is to mark the face of the right side with a stitch marker or bit of scrap yarn.
Everyone who does these demonstrations always use a double pointed needle or a circular needle. I'm reading a Lion Brand pattern that wants me to use the basic, single-point "straight" needle on rows that require me to knit on the wrong side. How do I flip or change to knit on the wrong side with a basic, single-point "straight" needle? It appears that the end cap is prohibiting me to do so. But the Lion Brand pattern wants me to use this type of needle; so there must be a special technique on knitting on the wrong side with a "straight" needle.
I was not using the circular needles to knit in the round and the technique of flat knitting is the same regardless of circular or flat needles. If you are knitting flat you begin with all of the stitches on your left hand needle and in the process of knitting all of the stitches will be transferred to the right hand needle as you create them. Once all of your stitches are on the right hand needle you simply switch which needle is in which hand. The needle with all of the stitches on it is transferred to your left hand and in doing so you flip it over so that the "wrong side" is showing. You pick up the empty needle with your right hand and begin working the stitches on the left needle. Once you've worked all of the stitches they will all be on the right hand needle. Then you switch that needle to your left hand, again flipping it over and the right side will be facing you, empty needle in your right hand.
Hi Barbara, Foote some reason your audio and video are not synced. It's not bad, just a little distracting.
Hmm, it seems to be OK from my side. It might be a buffering issue?
My pattern doesn’t indicate which is right side but wants each new section started on right side. So far I have a section of garter & a section called seed stitch (K1, P1). Any suggestion on how to figure out the right side?
Honestly, at this point if you have lost track it is going to be very hard to figure it out. I think I would look for the row that is the transition between your last row of garter and your first row of k1, p1 - if you can find that and position it so that the k1, p1 starts on the right edge and your last garter ridge is showing its purl side, then the side facing up should be the right side. And I would mark the RS once I figured it out LOL.
Wow. I had to watch the entire video just to hear that if you are only knitting in garter WS and RS don’t matter, Then why is it in my pattern?
Well, I cannot exactly say unless I saw your pattern, but there are various reasons it could be. Unless you are simply knitting a straight rectangle there is usually shaping of some sort. These types of patterns might say something like "increase 2 stitches every other RS row" or even simply increasing on the RS row and not increasing on a WS row. Or at the end will say "bind off from the wrong side". It is possible that it is truly irrelevant in your pattern, but that is an unusual situation. At a bare minimum, it is industry standard to indicate Right Side and Wrong Side.
