    I'm not to proud to admit - i was Ex Pro back in my day (90's) but this bike is just more than i can handle. Power comes so strong and fast - sadly i'll have to wait until spring to try it

      Pro back in the 90's means you understand how to go fast and most likely still go fast today! And yes the 2023/24 YZ450F engine revs so quickly with 2-stroke like snap - very fun and challenging to ride even when dialed back with an EFI map. I think the 23.5 KTM 450 Factory Edition engine with 60 hp at the rear wheel (according to MXA) is super easy to ride and makes 60hp very rideable...have you ridden a 23/24 KTM 450SXF? Would be curious to hear your thoughts

      @@mxengineer1 I haven’t - I try not to ride too many bikes because I always end up buying lol. This bike was giving me fits all year - even in set up or trying to get rid of the nervousness. Are you running sag and forks as per Yamaha suggestion or as per the current “normal” set up. I ended up buying a 250f in the mean time while I fry and get this 450 a little more Ver friendly.

      @@superjet94 Which 250F did you get? The all new 2024 YZ250F with the same frame as your 23/24 YZ450F? I moved forks around, ran 103~107mm sag, re-valved the suspension (Brad at RideWorx is amazing) and all helped settle the chassis and give me a little more comfort at speed. However for me the overall character of the new YZ450 is quick response to inputs: both the engine and chassis so hang on!

      I bought a new 2023 YZ250f as second bike, enjoying it - it just works and doesn't seem to care about set up....gas and rip. I just had my suspension done on my 450. According to suspension tech I've been going the wrong way chasing stability lol. They lengthened my rear shock and want me to run with lower sag numbers and forks higher in the clamps. Apparently they say the 450 likes a lot of weight on the front.....i only got a short ride on it before weather turned. It did make a big difference. WEIRD. But i agree with you - the character of this bike will never be like the old chassis. I can't blame the bike to much as being a 90'd era 2 stroke guy :-) I need to learn to ride it different....i'm work in progress at best lol. @@mxengineer1

      Love my 2-strokes, have a YZ250 and a KX250 - tuned for desert trail riding. AWESOME. But, I have a WR450F, cannot beat electric start and fuel injection! I'm now experimenting with calming the beast for desert trails. Presently, barely touch the throttle and - WHAM - full power hit at any rpm. It's a bitch on gnarly, technical trails.

    Love seeing these vids. As a guy that came from a yz450 and switch to a 2 stroke for single track, this 23 makes me want another 450. However I really would like to try out a 350. I’d also be interested in a 24 yz250f. I hear the current yz250f has a ton of power, I’d be curious how it stacks up against a 350 and if there is any advantage to it for ppl who are trying to do moto and single track. 250f I would imagine would be geared lower. Maybe that would be something for you to try one day.

      I've done a lot of back to back rides with the 20/21/22 YZ250F models on woods loops and for some reason (I think the somewhat abrupt initial throttle response) the YZ250F never won a lap time comparison. Here is a back to back with a YZ250F and KTM 450SXF (read the description for details).... ua-cam.com/video/uI8GT6MKx0c/v-deo.html
      Here is a Husky FC350 back to back with a YZ250F... ua-cam.com/video/j-QCGp9U5_U/v-deo.html
      I am hoping the updated chassis (and perhaps an updated engine) will make the '24 YZ250F an even better bike.
      I still really like the previous generation KTM/Husky 3350's....just did a ride this week on my '21 KR350.... ua-cam.com/video/O8q4qlHMIRc/v-deo.html

      My "350" map is simply retarding the ignition timing (leave fuel injection alone). I do a step down of the ignition timing starting at -10/2000 rpm, -9/5000 rpm, -8/8000 rpm, -7/10000 rpm. So for example go to 2000 rpm and for each of the throttle % positions (20%/40%/60%/80%) put a -10 in for ignition (you end up with a column of -10). Do the same for 5000rpm with -9 ignition timing, 8000 rpm -8, 10,000 rpm -7. You can go to my UA-cam info page and email mr if you want a screen shot. Let me know how the map works for you!

    You know, I listen to you make this video and I don’t hear one complaint while you’re riding it. In the woods. On a 450 mx bike. On what sounds like stock suspension. Some other channels I’m not gonna name would complain how much power a 450 has and he they can’t control the thing, how they can’t do tight woods riding on it etc. Looks like you handle it just fine.

      The '23 YZ450F is a BEAST...but so much FUN to ride!! Yes the engine is fast - but can be dialed back a bit with the tuner. The suspension is moto focused so it will be firm off road but opening up the clickers makes it much more rideable - not perfect but rideable. I like my bikes to have what I call offroad bandwidth - ride them on moto (slow Vet moto for me though my son rides them and is very fast) and capable of woods riding too. The YZ450F is a very capable bike...perhaps if the 2024 YZ450FX gets all of these updates that might be a better choice for me and maybe if they come out with that bike this summer I'll switch to that model. For now I will enjoy spinning the clickers and making maps and riding my 23 YZ450F anywhere!

      The YZ450F is a bit more of a beast in the woods - even when with the engine response turned down. A 350 still has less engine inertia so "feels" a bit more agile though the 23 YZ450F is surprisingly agile on the trails. I want to try the '24 YZ450FX which should be all new and have the 23 YZ450F updates along with the wide ratio (low 1st gear and taller 4th/5th gears) along with a more off road focused suspension setting...should be a very fun 450F for the woods and light Vet moto!

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Рік тому

      I have found that retarding the ignition setting can slow the engine RPM build and makes the bike feel a bit smoother. Adding fuel can have a similar result but sometimes makes the engine feel a bit richer and even stumble a bit. I wanted to try doing just an ignition change for this test and it was a noticeable change to throttle response. I will continue to try different settings to dial in a more refined "350" EFI map. The engine does run a bit hotter with the ignition retarded this much and also seemed to have a little less engine braking. So cool Yamaha offers this free tuning app!

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 місяців тому

      If you are looking to soften the throttle response retarding the ignition and adding fuel are (2) ways to accomplish this. Best to try different settings and see what works best for you. I'd start with making the low mid RPM ranges all -3 on ignition and see what you feel. Then go in steps up to the max you can retard the ignition (perhaps -9 on your 2018). See how it works. Then you can do similar climb adding fuel and feel the effects. It will most likely be a combination of retarded ignition and adding a little fuel that will give you a smoother engine response to throttle inputs. If the mid to upper range is OK then just adjust IG/Fuel in the low to mid RPM range.
