I put all my social media apps on a separate device so that I'm not distracted by it 24/7. I mostly use them for business anyways, so it works out well. This one thing has saved me so much time and mental space/energy!
I'm learning to notice when my stress at work is doing more harm than good trying to power through. When I'm in the office, sometimes I will break and get a cup of hot chocolate and just sit with it. I really felt myself reaching a breaking point when I was working from home the other day, so I set a timer for 30 minutes, lay down on my bed and just stared at the ceiling, focusing on the present moment. That may be a little extreme, but I just started a new role at my organization and on top of that we've lost many staff who were going to support me in my new role, so I find myself getting overwhelmed more easily these days. But taking that thirty minutes actually worked. I went from being on the verge of tears to returning to my desk and writing a couple of emails asking for help in the tasks I found most daunting, then getting more work done. Just that mental shift was all I needed and suddenly I had a proactive solution. It taught me that sometimes the solution is NOT to power through, but to pause, and shift gears, and pay attention to the present. I am so grateful I am learning this and your videos have really helped.
That's wonderful to hear! Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻 Such a great insight, that taking those 30 minutes to slow down and be present gave you the calm state of mind to ask for help and get the work done that was on your plate. I'm glad the video contributed in a small way to this, it motivates me to keep going. And I also struggle with workload overwhelm myself sometimes, I'm going to try this type of 30-minute break next time!
It helps to be sharing your life with a dog or two. You walk with them several times a day, and periodically stop to smell flowers, grass, dirt, etc. They know when bedtime is and request your presence at that time. They need a partner with whom to play. And the love you with all their fuzzy little hearts. Just sayin’.
I love dogs! 🦮 I actually volunteered as a dog walker at a shelter for a year. I hope to have a dog myself one day, golden retrievers are my favorites.
so so true about kids opening up when they feel you are not rushing. When you take time to read or talk to your kids they all of a sudden tell what's on their mind, something what happened during a day that still worries them , or something funny that the noticed. Love the moments like this.
Great ideas Peter.. especially when thinking about how much repeating these small tips each day, over a long time, can positively support health & well being.
Great tips, thanks. My problem is I'm a recovering news junkie, I'm too interested in the news. I now keep reminding myself that my personal news is often more important to worry about.
Glad you liked the tips, Ford! I've also been struggling with my news consumption, I even made a video about it (Why I Want To Stop Watching The News: ua-cam.com/video/jW4F229sS74/v-deo.html). Since making that video I've significantly cut back on how much news I consume and I feel much better for it. Good luck! 🙌🏻
My personal tip that helped me to slow down is having a daily planner. I bought it a couple of weeks ago, and i see how much helpful it is for me. Before having it i turned my attention from the process i am in right now to what else i have to do today - for ten times in hour. It was very unsettling distraction. But now i have relaxing feeling of all my to-do list being kept in a small book i can open after my current task. No need to worry about it:).
Thanks Peter. I’m going through a busy period in my life. I’m finding your tips and positive energy really helpful, especially as a reminder of what’s important, which is to be present when I’m with my loved ones and friends.
I love your meditations story, it was so like the impression a lot of people get of medication. This is a concise video with very thoughtful points to help with slowing down and mindfulness. Realistic points are well addressed, particularly Attention Residue .Thank you
Love your ideas and videos. I am trying to decipher your "almost Dutch" accent. Do you mind disclosing what country you are from originally? I hope you write a book and a work book!
This content is really helpful! Thanks once again 🙃 and is great that you include and sustain with books, sure I will look for some one soon! I really appreciate this approach because I work remotely, but my work is full time and very demand, but I agree always a space could be find to practice the slow living 🍃
Once again, thank you for your helpful tips and insight on slowing down. I'm currently baking a loaf of bread that I would say emulates the idea of slow living. It's a No-knead white bread recipe from King Arthur's website. The "secret," as explained on their website, is: time: the long rest is what develops the flavor and texture. 2-hour rest room temp, then 2 hours minimum in the refrigerator, up to 7 days in the refrigerator-7 days!!! The longer, the more flavor. I waited 6 days. It's baking now and smells great. A few more minutes for the bread to finish. I just opened the oven and looked at it: "Wow!" It looks great and smells great; it appears "it's going to be fantastic"! Worth the wait. I would like to challenge you to try this,😊 and let us know if this fits your slow living idea. It definitely made me develop patience in waiting for the finished product, and no doubt I won't rush eating it! (my desire is to develop this and use this bread as a gift, or treat, for people)
Wow, that's a lot of work and time you put into making that bread, Cindy! It sounds like a great way to slow down. I think it's also a great metaphor for many other things in life: often, it takes time, effort, and focused attention to grow something into the best thing it can be. That goes for relationships, growing a business, or making this type of bread. Thanks for sharing!
@@IAmPeterCook, I like your added insight! By the way, the bread was good! I shared it with someone for lunch today-success! When I came home I did sit in silence for 10 minutes as you suggested in #1 tip. I'll try to remember your thoughts on the time, effort, and focused attention to grow something into the best it can be. Good words to think on! Thank you.
Your suggestion sees to be to give up even those few things like TV watching that busy people may be enjoying everyday and instead to spend that time doing nothing so that it seems like the minutes are crawling by. Not sure if this is the best approach. Instead I would suggest looking hard at those things that you consider non-negotiable and really asking yourself if you need them in your life, could be professional ambition, your idea of how much time you want to spend with your children or any of those other things that are subtly identified as more "noble" than say "wasting time" scrolling through Instagram.
Hi Tanya! I bought it many years ago in a coworking space. It's the Roost laptop stand (www.therooststand.com/). It was originally a Kickstarter project. Hope this helps! 🙌🏻
What is _your_ best slow living tip for busy people?

Getting it at last... Slow is a state of giving full attention - being and doing flow from that. 😊 Thank you!
Thank you Peter for sharing your tips. Your video inspired me on my slow down journey. Stay healthy and happy.

I have noticed in the many vids I watch on minimalist, the most successful ones are single.
It truly is funny how ridiculously fast we choose to live especially here in the USA.
