It definitely is you have to have very good pulse and timing and be able to do very weird music like for example I had to play play the A of a count and then the E of a count right after at slightly less than 200 bpm or play really weird sections of ninelets. Also it’s rebound is a lot worse than the other drums and it gravity doesn’t help us. I played bass 4 of a line with 5 which was hardest (not by much) because of the way my director writes splits. Not saying they are the hardest, snare is definitely harder, but they are definitely not easy.
You can do it I know you can. My friend is 5 6 120 and marched it. Not going to lie it is really hard but you will survive just drop out when you absolutely must.
Back and core exercises is your friend. Believe me when I say conditioning those areas of your body will go a long way whether it's marching snare, tenors or bass. You do that and you'll do alright :)
I played bass 2 my freshman year in high school. Unfortunately, my line was never coordinated enough to even have a worthy session. I just wish I had the opportunity to be a part of a line like this or even close to it. Mine was always sub par. Unfortunately, I am no longer in school, so my opportunities are no longer there. I do assist my former high school drumline whenever I can.
Derp Derpington I've played both Snare and Bass and they're both extremely difficult in their own way. One's not any harder than the other. And I hear and see people say, "I love when the basses thunder" aand such all the time. They are each awesome and difficult in their own ways.
@Codemann098 or you could just move your hands an inch or two away from the rim? the foam is there for sound muting, not comfort. See how their mallets are pointed in?
I agree, but what I meant was listening so you understand the flow of the part and what it musically sounds like. That at least, helps me to learn my part better, it also helps newer players.
I would like to see you try and do what these guys do. I bet they play better than you could ever dream of. And in DCI, they have these crazy things called "Accents and Taps", which makes the drums sound diverse, and not crappy.
Ben Allen their basses are barely muffled it may seem like it from that layer of muffle on the outsides but it's does barely any muffling,it's the tuning their basses have that make them sound weird they crank them super,if you've ever seen them in person your know, and muffling actually help you hear the articulation of each note
for my school i play bass 4 out of five it is hard doing splits yes you will get used to the Weight of the drum but i am switching to snare this year :(i will miss my buddy
Phenomenal playing. I am surprised at the sizes of the drums. That has to be the smallest bass 5 I have ever seen. Looks like 2" separation between all drums. 28" to 20"?
Sort of, but listening can be easily misused information if it is not explained. Most newbie bass drummers "listen" to the rest of the bassline to anticipate their own notes. Usually this causes them to react to someone else, and they come in late. On the contrary, solid TIMING by all 5 players will ensure that you will play the correct rhythm, regardless of whether or not the rest of the bassline plays or not.
The amount of physical and mental preperation and ability to play base is much more complex than playing snare or tenors, as numerous DCI techs would agree with.
I play bass 5 and I'm the smallest person on the bass line and it is heavy hurts my back and the biggest girl is playing bass 1 I'm tall just not strong
Shawnee Blaine just make sure you keep on carrying and fight the pain. Your muscles will build up and it won’t hurt as much by the end of your season. If it really hurts that bad tell your tech that your need occasional breaks.
I am a Bass 6 in my high school marching band, and bass drum is a lot more difficult than people make it seem. Trust me.
bass 6 tho? Prolly easier
Cole Tiemann no it’s not

TheCyberDonkey do you play bass tho if you don’t shut the fuck up
Sucks bottom bass is the easiest. #bass2
bass 5 your tuning is the greatest
Cadets always have an awesome bassline. Some years are better than others, but they're always stellar, regardless.
I'm 5'3 and weigh 150 pounds and my band director is putting me on 4th bass next year ;-;
just be glad it's not bass 5. I'm 6'4 and also 150 pounds because of that drum
You can do it I know you can. My friend is 5 6 120 and marched it. Not going to lie it is really hard but you will survive just drop out when you absolutely must.
Made it into drumline first try. I'm 5'1, 118 lbs, drumline director put me into 2nd bass.
Back and core exercises is your friend. Believe me when I say conditioning those areas of your body will go a long way whether it's marching snare, tenors or bass. You do that and you'll do alright :)
I'm a freshman girl, I'm 5'4 and about 140 pounds and my director put me on bass 3?
I wish basses were louder the players are truly amazing
Timing and technique, they are everything
Heck ya! I play bass and this is awesome. May not look like much but it takes a lot of work. i love it!!!

Nice pants, nice drums, nice splits.... the perfect bassline!
I thought the guy on the left was closer to the camera but then I realized how tall he is.
For my high school i play size 1 bass drum first year playing it.
Bass 5 is hitting the shit out of that drum
Baseline is hard but savage
Holy Bass has been a mainstay forever, here’s hoping The Cadets org can figure out their financials and the corps can make a comeback soon
haha i went to the highschool they were at, i met these guys and played with them because they did a day with the cadetys camp...that was fun

The guy on the end is so tall the fifth bass looks like a third on him!!!
I would like to see you try and do what these guys do. I bet they play better than you could ever dream of. And in DCI, they have these crazy things called "Accents and Taps", which makes the drums sound diverse, and not crappy.
Why does everyone like basses so muffled? You can hardly even hear them...
Ben Allen their basses are barely muffled it may seem like it from that layer of muffle on the outsides but it's does barely any muffling,it's the tuning their basses have that make them sound weird they crank them super,if you've ever seen them in person your know, and muffling actually help you hear the articulation of each note
mario?!?!
It sounds muffled because they tune them so damn high.....
dude there's this guy and he's in high school band and middle school band when he was about 10 years old he played with a conjunto
for my school i play bass 4 out of five it is hard doing splits yes you will get used to the Weight of the drum but i am switching to snare this year :(i will miss my buddy
Damn... do you know how long it takes to get on their level!?!?! YEARS!!!
isaiah spratley nobody cares about your hatred for drum corps. be more diverse with your music interests, drum corps is the hardest thing out there.

I love this! (:
Starting on the right for marching and marking time screws me up though D:
I've tried.
basses are just so bad ass. 4th bass represent.
its called marking time, helps you stay on beat
Bass 5 is a fucking giant
Phenomenal playing. I am surprised at the sizes of the drums. That has to be the smallest bass 5 I have ever seen. Looks like 2" separation between all drums. 28" to 20"?

Listening is also a big one.
my favorite bass line
p.s.
the guy talking look like Rob Van Dam
@sweetlikeADAM Haha. He used to teach at my high school. He's easily 6'5.
The amount of physical and mental preperation and ability to play base is much more complex than playing snare or tenors, as numerous DCI techs would agree with.
and teamwork a good bass line works like it would be one person
HOLY BASS BATMAN!
omg this is so bad ass... why is the shortest guy on base 4? not hating...just curious
Bass 5's posture is ridiculous
It is definitely impressive - but nothing can ever beat 1984's version. Nothing at all.
The shorts. The fucking shorts.
@Codemann098 youre supposed to have your hands pointed in so you dont hit it.. thats your fault for not having proper technique...
I want the shorts.
Found it after 6 years f$nn$l$
bottom bass, bottom bass for mcm this year beast!
Hate the gap between 4&5 and small basses. I guess I just don't like a bass that sounds like a tom
ooh I have video of them practicing that part like 1:20 to 1:26 or something around it.
in that them marking time
I play bass 5 and I'm the smallest person on the bass line and it is heavy hurts my back and the biggest girl is playing bass 1 I'm tall just not strong
Shawnee Blaine me too, I'm tall and lanky, the strongest guy on mine is playing bass 1
I feel you I'm the shortest person in my drumline and I'm on 5th but the girl on 4th is like a foot taller than me. It looks odd
Shawnee Blaine just make sure you keep on carrying and fight the pain. Your muscles will build up and it won’t hurt as much by the end of your season. If it really hurts that bad tell your tech that your need occasional breaks.
It really does sound like a ballon
@sweetlikeADAM its only so he can see over the drum
:41 amazing
i dont like the way their tuned how do you get heard across the feild
new heads? they sound way too low. Maybe just the video
I want to be good at bass

Is there sheet music for this?
bass 5 just sounds like smack xD god
I watched in a mirror so that their feet don't throw me off...
Have you, ever heard of dynamics?
DRUM GOD SPEAKS!!!! ALL HEED THE DRUM GOD!!!
Bass 5 is tall as shit!
I spelled balloon wrong
that bottom sounds like someone is smacking a guy with a mallet.... Jeez
bass 5 sounds like a balloon
Slap Da Bass Mon!
parece barulho de multitons
'Leg moving shit'....
Do you not know what marking time is?
Why are they all in shorts and nothing more? lol
Do you have any idea how hot a rehearsal gets?
UnCensoredSean And for how long
organmastr Usually rehearsals can go up about 2 and half to 3 hours almost non stop drumming
+LemonYT corps practice like 10 hours
bmx687 they have hats on ;-;
The drums are first, muted, second, ever heard of dynamics?
ヤバイめっちゃあってる(◎-◎;)
