A little bit about the album this song is on, _A Momentary Lapse of Reason._ This album was the first after the departure of Roger Waters. It originally started as a Gilmore solo album. But then he brought in Mason to do a guitar part and then Wright to do a keyboard for another song, and then they decided to just make it as a Pink Floyd album. Because if that, this is the one Pink Floyd album that really sounds much more like a David Gilmour solo album than a Pink Floyd album.
One of my favorite things that Pink Floyd does is take a note from one instrument or singer and so seamlessly hand to another that you don't realize it at first. In this song it's when the one high note being sung by the one back-up singer is taken up by Gilmour. They do it quite a few of their songs (Sheep, for instance) and I love it.
Over the years something I've discovered about Pink Floyd or at least noticed is that they seem to know the human attention span!! The reason I say that is anytime you start feeling like reaching for the dial or you're hoping that the songs getting done or you think it's time for a change, it happens!!
This is 100%...i can name 1000 times this has happened with floyd, they take you to the aggravation point then relieve you. Pink Floyds biggest trick was they were always creating contrasts
40 years ago, when I was a teenager, Ace Frehley was number 1 for me. An older friend said at the time that David Gilmoure was the best guitarist. I laughed at him. Today I know there is no "best" guitarist, but today I also know what he meant back then. There are very few guitarists who are instantly recognizable by their playing and David is certainly one of them.
@@frontman3336 From the Nassau Colosseum on Long Island, New York in August 1988 (home of the NHL's New York Islanders). I had a copy of the original concert on VHS HiFi and first heard the concert in about 1991 or so. "On the Turning Away" was at least 4 minutes shorter on the initial release and also on the DVD. They added in the remaining 4 minutes or so of the guitar solo in 2019 and I absolutely love it. My favourite Pink Floyd song and David Gilmour guitar solo. Period. So I will lob an artillery shell or two at you David but not a barrage, LOL! 😉🎸💖
Agree with you on all points, but you may have missed one that's a key part of many, many PF songs: the lyrics, the message! This is one of their stellar commentary tunes that should make any listener sit up and take notice! Humanitarian lyrics that pose honest, needed questions and suggestions. Wonderful female vocalists add a fullness to the song's poignancy.
Solid. I'm a die hard PF fan. As far as I'm concerned, no one really comes close. But I agree with your assessment of this song. Compared to many other songs in their catalog, it is average. But compared to the rest of the music out there it's very impressive. Thanks for being honest.
Hiya DH - big Floyd fan here (I have their complete collection - not a fan of a lot of their early stuff ). I scored this performance at 7.9-8.2 mainly because the extra 3 or so minutes of instrumental outro took me away from the earlier vocals though it did give me an extra 3 minutes of listening to Rachel and co's vocal harmonies almost perfectly in sync with the musical instruments. I think most of their concerts have undergone the remastered (audio and visual) experience of late (last 3-8 years) and some are just magical. Anyways - just letting you know I'm still hanging about listening, and watching. Keep up being you and I'll catch you on the next reaction that catches my eye/ear. Cheers from Oz 🦘
Love that song, it's one of my favorites from Pink Floyd. I have even played it a couple of times, I have 2 effects presets specifically dedicated for that song. I titled them "1 Of These Days" and "2 Of These Days".
I can listen to most Gilmour solos all day, and this is a good one, but I agree it goes on a little too long. I agree with your rating. Dogs, Echoes, Shine On, are all much longer than this snd they leave you wanting more.
Great stuff....as long as you aren't averse to long well-constructed and interesting songs, please give a try to one of the best prog metal bands (and one you have never covered) - Vanden Plas. Here's just one of their epics - "On My Way To Jerusalem" - I guarantee you will not be bored: ua-cam.com/video/xMELW0DEM7g/v-deo.html FYI, they have been around since the mid-eighties with only a single lineup change Keyboardist last year)....amazing in its own right. Enjoy - I'll bet you'll want more afterwards.
One of the finest live performances I have ever seen. I was 18 and lucky enough to see this live.
Pink Floyd doing Pink Floyd things........ Brilliant!
I’m so fortunate that I was able to see them live twice…..1988 & 1995.

Comfortably numb, from Pulse live concert. Best live guitar solo ever.

There was a band called Pink Floyd 1965 - 1994 RIP Syd and Richard

The jam at the end makes the slow buildup so worth it.
Pink Floyd to me are the ultimate band in there area of music and David Gilmore shows so much emotions with his guitar work

Great reaction i could see it in your eyes that the music of Pink Floyd touches you like it touches me
This is my favorite pink floyd album .,and the first one I brought .it's been on my car cd player for the last two months playing .I love this .
I think this is the Pulse tour in Italy , i was at the Earls Court Pulse , one of the best nights of my life period
This is from Delicate Sound Of Thunder, I was also at Earls Court 94, best concert ever!🤟

All of PF's longer songs leave you wanting more 💗✌🤘🖖
Love this song, terrific album. PF never needed help in the vocal department, one of the reasons they were so successful...imo

"it's a shame that somehow
light is changing to shadow"
I found myself saying "ya damn right!" an awful lot during your commentary, especially your first long commentary. Ya damn right!
David Gilmour 🎸🔥🤘
8.1.
I can live with that.
This is great I loved everything about it
AUTHENTIC HILLBILLY JIBBERISH!!!
You must list to one of these days by Pink Floyd

Some patron suggest him echoes pt 1 live at pompei jeeeez 😅

When did Glen Beck grow his hair out?
I would of never put that together 😂

Not one word about the b e a u t i f u l lyrics???
Nope sorry, I'm not a lyrics guy. Lyrics have always gone right over my head, so I stick with what I know well.
😅im certain gilmour values your opinion on this masterpiece
How impatient. You almost want the song to end before it even starts.
Lol. I'm the same and Floyd's my favourite band
This band is a miracle. I dont know what else to say.
