I feel the need for a point of clarification; the DoD knows exactly how much money they spend and how big they are, but they will never fully pass a full audit because of how many severely projects they have. There is just information that can’t be filled and it will leave gaps that cause them to “fail” an audit. Nothing everything can be publicly accounted for

    • @bilboes6634

An audit would mean revealing every secret technological project...they can't and will never do that. They can say, however, "this much money" goes to the military...which is very broad and non-specific.

    • @ovo_daedae6678

They probably secretly spend more money than that.

    • @pspublic13
      @pspublic13 3 роки тому +2

@@ovo_daedae6678 Yes they do but this is also a known quantity. Government budgets are public information and every dollar is accounted for.
Even the secret classified budget funds are easy to calculate. Just subtract every listed spending item from the total amount of money used. It's in the tens of billions of dollars which is a lot of money but not that much for the US budgets.
When it comes to the US military, the money comes from 3 main areas. The general defense budget, emergency or provisional supplemental spending such as war budgets for Iraq and Afghanistan, and finally the classified budget which is not listed publicly but is much smaller than the first two types of funding.

The primary reason that there cannot be a full and complete accounting of the US military's "footprint" is due to secrecy and black operations. Even if an accounting process has the proper personnel to review the parts of the Pentagon budget that are black, there are compartmentalized programs even they will still not have access to, and the final product of such an accounting would be so redacted so as to be useless.

I'm in the military. I'd like to point out the way classified material works. Anyone who wants to view classified information must have an equivalent or higher clearance. *And* they also have to have a reason to know that information. They do this so there's a very narrow margin that allows the discharge (negligent or otherwise) of classified information. If a Brigadier General, Major General, etc doesn't _need_ to know something classified they won't and likely wouldn't even know what they don't know.
What this means is that in order for an audit to happen, examining the amount of spending (may be classified) on specific programs (may be classified), international installation locations (may be classified), technology the money is spent on (probably classified), etc they would need at least a Top Secret clearance. *And* they would also be receiving and analyzing a huge amount of likely classified information while not being in a high position in the DoD or government in general most likely. They would know more secrets than most generals even know. They would be a bottleneck for classified info and a huge vector for negligent discharge of classified information or espionage.
The amount of red tape involved in auditing the military would likely be crazy and take forever to sort out. I highly doubt they just didn't have the answers. It's way more likely they just didn't want that info out there to keep the enemy guessing and to avoid national security issues.

When you think about it, it makes complete and perfect sense that the USA has so many bases in Korea, Japan, and Germany. These bases are not just "holdovers from World War 2" as the video maker dismisses. Most of the bases are there because there are real threats nearby, and having US military personnel in those places deters those threats from being more threatening. OK, granted that the focus of the NATO vs Russia "competition" has moved to the east with the entry of Poland and other nations, but Germany is still a focal point in Europe for NATO's need to defend against the aspirations of Putin and his crowd.
As for Japan and Korea, the threat posed by North Korea and its sponsors in China to Japan and South Korea...not to mention Taiwan...requires the US be there in force to support our allies in the region.

So I was on one of those small dots in Africa in 2016 when civil war broke out in S Sudan, which necessitated a evacuation of the US embassy there. We were able to evacuate the embassy in a very short timeframe, because, rather than having to fly Marines and supplies from the US, we had the means in Djibouti. What I think a lot of people don't understand that haven't been in the military, is that the Navy gets called for a capsized boat, the Air Force aids in searching for downed aircraft. The Army helps with disaster relief. There are plenty of noncombat missions the military helps to fulfill. Although OH is right, it's also so if something pops off in -insert random place here-, we're there on short notice.

I’m late AGAIN! (I really need to turn notifications on!) But, anyway America is basically the son that moved out when it was 18 and wanted to be on its own lol we were the “black sheep” of the family 😂 BUT what is really interesting is that the British (we still love our family across the pond ❤️) was such a BIG country in numbers compared to the British (American) colonies. Then 100s of years later WE outnumbered the British and Britain and the U.S. have relied on each other HEAVILY throughout history. Such as WW1 and WW2 when America came to Britain’s defense (as well as NATO and the oppressed countries aid.) then during 9/11 the queen actually broke a 600 year tradition and actually played the U.S. anthem at Buckingham Palace (until then only the British national anthem was played.) and that the British was the second largest military (the first being the U.S.) to declare war on terrorism. So we have had some rough history but, we always have (and hopefully always will.) stick together. The US is geographically separated from most of the world by the oceans... the massive amount of installations offer refueling options for any mission needed... That, if absolutely nothing else, is what these things are for. The ability for the US to put assets on birds (be it people or bombs) and fly them from the US to any country on the planet with the aid of refueling spots is something that few if any other militaries can match.

During my time in service we had a lot of requests from other countries to build bases or have a long term presence in a few countries. Either with a small installation, sharing a base with a host nation or regular rotations of US troops coming in to train with the host nation. A few countries were in Europe mainly NATO members and a few countries in the Pacific. During my time the requests came in and a few of these requests did become reality. My unit took part in one of the European requests and a friend of mine participated in one of the requests in the pacific. Both were requests for US troops to share a base and train with the host nation on a constant rotation. That was back in 2011 and both are still going on today and have even expanded at the host nations request.

I don't live next to a US military base, but used to have frequent trips to a town next to a USMC base in Eastern NC USA. Sometimes you would(all from the POV off the back gate to the base next to a water source): hear artillery shell explosions, sometimes hear machinegun fire with the explosions, see flares pop up at night in the middle of the forest, see V-22s fly overhead, seen CH-46's, see CH-53's, see UH-1Y Venoms, saw a AH-1Z Viper a couple times, saw some Harriers fly really high overhead a couple times, and seen a few patrol boats driving by once in a while(usually at night, lol). The marines frequented the bars/bar & grill type restaurants, seen some grunts at the beach, and grunts in general around town. Been on the base a few times too...mostly trees, lol. I think it's a cool experience to see and hear it all!

Two points (in reverse order): First, the reason for his map and database are simple -- Yes, there are those within the US political structure who fancy themselves as Romanesque Procurators, but the practical reason derives directly from US participation in WW2: For the first two years of the US's involvement in the war, we got our asses kicked on a regular basis. There was little in the way of forward-positioning or monitoring, few effective defenses in the few forward-deployment areas we did have, and no monitoring, backup, logistical depth or training for a real war, even as WW2 was literally exploding for 2.5 years on opposite sides of both coasts....Which, up until that time, was how the US fought wars: we were always on the back foot, and won by the skin of our teeth, usually because we could both out-die and out-spend our enemy-du-jour. _After_ WW2, with a bipolar world and nuclear weapons (no, no conspiracy-whizzles here - leave that for another video...this is the straight version), there was no "work-up time" possible - we had to be ready to go from _0 to Hory Clap_ from _Minute One,_ 24/7/365. This map is the result. Yes - it is stupidly expensive. Yes - you should be happy about it. Yes - you should be on the ass of the government to not descend to #2.....
Which, secondly, is that the first proposition he makes in his video, is why you should read history -- because it is replete with examples of European powers (and the US, its unique aspects aside, is very much based on a European model of thought) maintaining large military forces nearby to native populations...And specifically, the Spanish in the Americas. If you think we are at the level of the Spanish - or, gods forbid, the Chinese - you need to get out of your basement more, and put down the latte. The reason Western Europe has gotten away with decreasing its militaries (and their military spending) in recent decades is precisely because US forces were there in such enormous numbers...And the reason why they (and the Japanese) are now reorganizing their militaries, spending more money and recruiting more troops is also precisely because we are shrinking our own military force structure, and increasingly turning to the private sector.....Which, if Mozambique is anything to go by, is about the disaster-in-the-making I always knew it would turn out to be.
To paraphrase Trotsky, you may not think too deeply about War and Strategy, but they think deeply about _you,_ every single second of every single day.

You get used to hearing and see fighter jets flying in the sky, especially when a military crisis like the Iran air strikes last year. There was also a time we saw a ufo beam across the sky leaving a huge bluish green trail and the Air Force base claimed they were testing a new missile or rocket system but the trajectory didn’t appear to come from that base. Also, when covid hit, the army came to a local church and was handing out lots of food and water for locals which was cool
