I have to agree. The hooks Ghost come up with are masterfully crafted. I understand they’re not for everyone and bubblegum to some people, but if you’re a songwriter, they’re doing something you should aspire to in that dept.
@@BigMuff520 yep. That's a much more organized version of the point I wanted to make. So much music is interchangeable these days. Better hooks and better crafted songs are needed
The positive here is that once everyone can clearly see their intention is sell you these cheesy, weak, intentionally designed catchy hooks it separates them from real metal. Those who seek real metal prefer the pure aggression, feeling, and abrupt tempo changes a la Altars of Madness over critically applaudable songwriting skills. Why does it have to be 'catchy' and palatable? Why not the fury of Blasphemy and the jarring dissonance of Immolation? Mass accessibility offers success and opportunity, but thankfully the metal underground is still alive.
@mikerauter1859 I'd disagree. Trey and David on those first 4 morbid angel albums has massive hooks and very catchy, just a much more aggressive version. But those songs were so damn well written. Same with nightside eclipse or ix equilibrium. That album was an absolute masterpiece and my demo fragile art was an attempt to get even slightly close to the abilities of ihsahn and samoth
Well I'll alter the perspective to my comments to include aggression and extremity if they're the dominant experience will help allow for catchyness in repetitive structures like the early morbid angel you mentioned. If it doesn't have aggression and is simply catchy for catchy's sake may as well be Nickelback@@TheDistortionPrinciple
Im 48 and have been a death, thrash, hard core ect fan my entire life. I finally crawled out of my cave 2 years ago and listened to Ghost for the first time. Pinnacle to the Pit was what i heard. Haters are gonna hate but the fact of the matter is. Ghost is the shit, their riffs will stick in your head for days and some of their covers are better than the originals
I didn't know about them till 5-6 years ago, when I kept seeing their name pop up at the top of some "best metal songs of the year" lists. The singer, Tobias Forge, is from my wife's hometown so I had to look them up. They have written some good stuff... and a lot of stuff that misses. I always say they're metal Abba with the pop hook sensibility.
Totally catchy tunes. I’ve been learning a bunch of their stuff on bass. I like “heavy” stuff with melody. Cirice is kinda like saying ser-eese And in my opinion they do not suck.
Ghost is a band I like when I hear them but I never think to listen to them on my own. I'll probably listen to them at work tonight but only because you mentioned them.
@@TheDistortionPrinciple lol. I spent a weekend writing a song. It was Post Mortem I wrote Post Mortem. I always think of early Uriah Heap and Mercyful Fate when I hear Ghost.
I don't think Tobias has ever claimed they were a metal band. He writes from his influences which are vast ranging from metal to pop to classic rock. I think the fans and media just gave them the "metal" label because of their image and earlier work and they haven't been able to shake that label. Much like Oasis got stuck with the whole Beatles imitators label... Even though they sound nothing like the Beatles.
I would agree the earlier stuff is more metal and probably why the tag stuck. Of course the one time I saw them live it was with anthrax and Megadeth as well
Ive never been a fan of ghost but ive seen some intriguing videos on YT that makes me think they can be cool when they want to with some catchy stuff. Just not my cup of tea
I don't think ghost should be called metal. Same thing goes for Metallica. They are hard Rock bands. In that vein ghost is the best Hard Rock band to come out in twenty years. They know how to write music and compose their craft perfectly. They are just not metal. Metal heads will never like them. Nor should they. Slipknot and ghost are Miles apart.
I hate Prequelle and Impera barring two songs Faith and Hunters Moon those are great songs but everything else sucks. I love everything before Prequelle though Meliora is a masterpiece! they just went too poppy sounding and lost the edge. imho
Ghost is one of those bands that people who don't listen to metal will bring up when you tell them you like metal. They have a cool aesthetic but i can't stand their music.
I can't stand the vocals. The guy has such a small range, but his voice doesn't have the character to make up for it. The band itself, and maybe it's the production, sounds so wimpy. With the imagery they put out you'd think they're super heavy, but as someone else said they sound like Scooby Doo chase music. I try not to be a hater, but every once in a while I just gotta tell the world how much I think this band sucks.
I love Ghost. And the fact that so many metal fans cry about them proves that “real” metal fans are softer than Ghost’s music lol

That's why I love them haha. It's everything between heavy metal and Abba stuff. Amazing and love it.
It sounds better as an isolated guitar track.
