Lathe restoration. Simple lathe stand.

- Continuing to develop my skills, I decided to buy a small lathe for metal work.
I was lucky, this turning machine (TV-4 model) I found on internet and
the location was not far from my home.
This lathe was produced in Soviet union in 1974 and it still works.
I'll do some restoration work.
Thanks for watching. -
Most comments seemed to slam this guy pretty hard but had you read the description, he is working on his skills. This lathe is not an antique. All it needed was some cleaning up, maybe some new wiring and a little new paint. He said was working on the stand, not so much the lathe. There was no need to take it all the way down and get extensive with it for what he was intending to do with it. So, lighten up. It's a working machine. It didn't have to be fully restored to 'like new' condition.
Agree with you. He doesn't restore an old rare car. It's a tool. Just a tool.
Witammm!!Udana renowacja tokarka!!Efekty widoczne,bedziesluzyc na lata!Dobry pokaz filmowy!!Tak trzymac!!
a most competent and workman like renovation, thank you.
Outstanding work, nice to bring a machine back to life
This thing found a better home! :D
Excellent job
Great idea for fixing that handle with epoxy. Never thought of doing it that way. Top marks :-)
Cracking work mate keep it up saving a decent lathe from scrap nice workmanship thanks for sharing
A great lathe for the workshop!
You gave it so much love
I know that I’m a bit late in commenting but I’d like to say that you have an eye 👁 for detail.
Very enjoyable to watch.
Thanks 🙂
That looks a good one to service & make good on a stable stand!
A fantastic restoration and the casting of the handle with epoxy was sheer genius. I cannot wait to see what you produce on your new lathe. The work was done to your usual very high standards. A HUGE thumbs up.
Thank you sir for your comments they are awesome. Sure I will produce something on this lathe. But before this I have the few things-ideas I want to do first )
i came to comment right after the handle wheel repair too! brilliant way to do it, we learn something new everyday if we keep our eyes and ears open!

Handle repair was essentially jerry rigged mold casting setup, though using pen ink as color was pretty clever idea, same as adding storage space under the lathe, that in this case can create tripping hazard. How ever what hell are you talking about high standards? I know these things depend on perspective, but camoon?! He didnt even replace slide cleaner pads, check slider for straightness and who know what he over looked.
Also this not a restoration, more like "amateur fix it in working condition and paint it". But at least he did try to make it better, rather than fucking it up by lack of maintenance. I suggest you pool over how to maintain your lathe and do bit more thorough job next time.
WTF is with all these DB's who come on UA-cam and belittle people's work? This clown has 41 videos showing him running around playing combat games with pretend guns. Make something or fix something before you trash somebody who does.
really cool little lathe
Great work, friend!
very charming old urss lathe
A very good!
Nice job on the tail stock knob repair..
Great restoration Sir ! very nice.
Great restoration 👍👍👍
I love the end !
You must be a very clever man, great restoration like watching all your video's , have a nice day . Brian UK !!!
Thank you Brian! Have a nice day too! Nick UA !!! :)
Simply marvelous and genius kob
really apreciated the no talking,, great work,, should Isay awsome..Thank you very much keep posting...
What a paint job...
Brad. Haven't see you around in a while
Dear friend, you are a genius. Good boy. Greetings from Italy.
Although you say you are "developing" your skills they are far in advance of mine, I want to go out and break something so I can fix it using your method. An absolutely brilliant find and a great size for a home workshop, I’m totally envious as I only have a small wood lathe.
Nice job
Beau travail.
Nice job, and it will be adequate to learn how to do some metalwork on. Cheers.
Now that's talent right there kids.
Awesome job!
Great work, friend! Ignore all of the idiots that offer only negative comments. Its YOUR LATHE, and you did it YOUR WAY. The negative people have NOTHING to show for their negative attitudes, while you have a beautiful old lathe in great working condition that you can now enjoy! A+ friend! by the way, I restored a 1937 South Bend 9” model C just recently. I LOVE IT!
Man im Like in Awe! Right now Beautiful Job restoring that Old lathe! I love seeing old tools being restored rather than hauled off to the Dump/Garbage!!! Im sure youll get a lifetime of use and it will still be running strong! You did such a Great Job all Around!! You didnt take any short cuts and your hard work and time really Payed off! Goodluck to you and cant wait to see you making parts or whatever on your Brand new! Vintage lathe lol I love how you fixed that broken Wheel knob!(dont know the name) that was such a Brilliant Idea! Very Clever and it came out great! You couldnt even tell it was broken! Well take care i Subscribed so ill catch you later lol Have a Great Day!
good job
Looks like normal human restoration that you and I can do. Within budget and time frame. Fixing worn parts, fixing broken parts. Not the crazy down to the last screw restoration one apparently nowadays needs to do to not attract butthurt perfectionists.
That said, I cannot agree on your pick of the color scheme, gray is just.. too gray, you know. Some nice colorful hammer paint finish would have been just perfect. Your skill with the roller is second to none, though, I can never get this to work, brush for me all the way :)
Also would have probably replaced the slotted screws with nice socket screws, but that's just me kinda like that hexagon look.
Aside from that, the handle fix. Very very well done, who needs 2k mold silicone when you can use regular caulking one ;) And where that pens which paint you blew into the epoxy? Genius! Gonna remember that for whenever I need to do something similar.
I call it tools for hipsters' workshops.
fico escelente o seu trabalho amigo
...OBRA DE ARTE...
Dude- you find the coolest things and then improve them!! *****
Hi just watched your video, would like to say what an outstanding job you've made of it. Therefore, it has to be a 10/10 bob in derby
Love the hat!!
That's a pretty cool little machine. Considering its origin you should have painted it red.
I would be concerned about out of tolerance gears, bearings, sliding surfaces and of course the electric motor. Having said that I can't wait to run across one of these and get knee deep in gears and grease and nuts and bolts. I'll overcome my concerns about wear and tear as I work through the project. I would have used a paint brush instead of roller. Nice move on the wheel repair. Got some pointers. Thanks and nice job.
Not bad work, young man, especially for a first time effort with limited experience and tools.
It might not be a perfect machine, but it is older than me, and I am no perfect machinist, but a useful old machinist!
Thanks!
Good luck my friend
Cool can`t wait to see you making chips.
I suspect that the gearbox and apron gears need liquid oil rather than grease. Nice work.
Nah. He did right in both cases. The gearbox (clue in the name) needs gearbox oil, any automotive grade will do in a hobby lathe, I'd go for something more specific in an industrial environment. The oil is thrown around inside by the high speed shaft and gears, lubricating the whole assembly.
The apron is low speed, oil wouldn't get thrown around so grease is the word there. The bigger the glob the better the job.
I congratulate you ... greetings ... I'm Marcelo de Berazategui
Wow brilliant idea for the handle never would of thought doing the same thing but pure genius
Hydraulic oil is often about the right weight for the bed and cross slide ways (30 weight).
Keep going and you will be fine
Great video! And loved how you fixed the knob with the silicone mold. Oh and love your city as well! The Slava Ukrainia restaurant is an amazing place!
I was lucky enough to get a hold of some legs from a lathe from w.f&j barns made in rockford ill. I built a table from them and the thing turned out awesome
Bom trabalho 👌👍.
super boulot
Fesahe
Great video, although, I loved that green piant color.
That lathe is green because it from Soviet Ukraine. So after 2WW soviet union have a lot of green paint and use it everywhere when can you see ...;)
Super
The first thing I'd make is a new handle/knob that you repaired with epoxy. :) Well done.
Fajno!
so much clever
nice paintjob , but it is abolutely not a restoration
not redo the prismas , no new bearings or bushings ,
what have you restored ??
Esperaba mas trabajo de restauración.
muito bom trabalho show
bon travaille
Very compelling presentation; you look like you knew EXACTLY what had to be done! Impressive shop, and your craftsmanship is impressive, a real artist! How is the lathe's accuracy? Stripping the paint is a task I would have avoided, but you did it effortlessly...
Thank you sir for your comment. For this type of lathe the accuracy type is NORMAL. I don't know is this an international classification.
how much did you get the lathe for, if i found an old lathe like that i would be so happy
Very good, ok.
A couple of observations.
You could've fitted matching levers.
Also, how about a Quick Change tool-post?
It looks like an awesome little gear head lathe. What is the swing and distance between centers? Thanks.
my dream machine even the size is perfect for me too bad cant buy one of these maybe after 5 or 10 years i will own one or maybe not 😢😢😢
Could have the complete disassembly even the gearbox , sand it than the paint with a compressor the result will be better than that thank you ?
Good job fixing up the late.
Ignore negative comments :)
My only thought seeing this is about the bottom stand, while a great idea to have a drawer to stor stuff, is that stand not too deep? I would imagine you having to stand just a tad too far away from the lathe for comfortable use, especially if you stand for more than say 20 minutes working manually.
Can I recommend that you look at the channel of Xynudu on UA-cam, what he has to show you in metalwork, and particularly lathework will be very useful.
10 out of 10✅
I use brake caliper paint on my projects,,, damn near bulletproof and resists grease and oil
Use light weight non detergent oil on all your parts,,,except open gears and I use lucas red n tacky on them,,, the grease is going to become hard and make it hard to slide on gibs
would love to have that old Russian lathe
That is no russian lathe, it from Ukrainian Soviet Socialistic Republic, so Ukraine and Russia different countries bro...
@@Woffleg1 But they were also made in Russia. My TV4 was made in Rostov on Don.
Awesome work! What's the deal with those strings?
Oh,,,,I wanted to see you turning something,,,nice job,,,l love to bring tools back too life,, you have a nice lathe there,, how much did you pay?
Try and oil the bed and cross slide every time you use the machine, and the tailstock barrel and bedway.
I have bought an restored 3 lathes in the past 2 months, that is a well built machine, bed is a little short,, but such a nice heavy duty headstock, what brand is it?? Never seen one like it.
Cool restoration 👍I need 1 of this lathe where can I get one???
Take a Community College Auto Body Shop Class....please!
Should use a finer wire wheel my friend not to gouge the metal
what Brand and Model is this lathe? What is the Country of Origin? I like it!
4 (TV4) made in USSR. School students loved them!
Fantastic job and Hail to the Redskins!
