If I can derive a good story and a few good jokes from the whole situation, that's enough for me for now. 😅 Unfortunately, German law doesn't make it so easy to return things. However, I wouldn't want to give back the M11 now either. Probably Stockholm Syndrome. 😆
I REALLY wanted to get the M11, but there’s really no excuse for the issues on the camera. It would be one thing even if Leica admitted these issues and said they’re working on a fix. They won’t even admit there’s issues. A $9000 camera, or any new camera for that matter, shouldn’t have issues at all. Pulling the battery to fix a freeze, formatting the SD card with some special up up, down down left right up down cheat code to get it to work, etc are inexcusable. Love the Leica cameras I have and love the brand, but I won’t be giving Leica any free passes on a flawed camera model
I have heard from so many people that the M11 has serious issues. Mine is just average in comparison. However, it's really lousy of Leica to simply not acknowledge it. At least they replace it without any fuss. I also believe they changed the battery just because they knew it had to be removed occasionally. It would be a hassle with the M10 to unscrew the baseplate every time.
Leica... hmmm.... maybe not worth it after all!
After all, there are usually no bad products only bad prices. The M11 in its current state is definitely a product with a very bad price. 😅
Everyone preparing to buy the #M11 and #M11P thanks you for your honest review of the glaring unresolved issues. You saved me a headache and $17,000 dollars. So many others that review this camera aren’t even mentioning these ongoing issues. Please update us with a new video if Leica ever addresses these issues fully. I am sure you have gotten a lot of pushback from #Leica fans who dare not even speak of issues.
I have been buying digital cameras for 15 years and had half a dozen brands and never had a camera freeze and have to remove the battery, let alone a $10,000 camera. Maybe the solution is a class action lawsuit, at this point the M11 should be classified as a lemon. Great channel and great info.
"Classified as lemon" 😄😄😄 Thank you for the kind words. I think many people don't mention many problems because they don't have them at all. Some get a camera like mine, and some never have even a single problem. Unfortunately, I returned my M11 a some time ago, so I can't make a follow-up video, unfortunately.
Never update a reliable working A-cam unless you have at least two of them :)

Age is no barrier to capturing great shots, my friend! And with the M3 and M A cameras in your hands, you've got a reliable setup to create some awesome shots. 👌
I have a button rewind Leica M2 (1958 vintage) . It's 65 years old and it's still in immaculate working order.
I never have any problems with it in any conditions or weather. You could get a good user M2 for only $500 a few years back.
I think Leica were okay with cameras up till around the 80s and the original M6 was good for 30 years too.
Digitally, Leica is increasing its prices year on year.
They are a luxury goods company now.
If you do a UA-cam search you will see umpteen dispirited customers who have slapped down a ton of money only to be frustrated to the max.
I believe an M10 was the best digital Leica for shooting.
Magnum guy Nikos Economopoulos uses one to great effect.
It's completely crazy chasing all these mega pixels when all you really really need are 24mp. And all these $7000 lenses and $9000 cameras is crazy too. And then you have to unfreeze the damn thing.
Give me my $500, 65year old M2 and my 35mm pre-aspherical Summilux any day.
I can fully agree with you; my M3 also outperformed the M6 in terms of build quality. A tank of a camera, and the M2 is certainly no exception. It's just very annoying that Leica, as a company, needs to make more profit for their shareholders every year, and that's why the cameras keep getting more and more expensive.
I've also heard many complaints about the M10, but no one has really complained about the M240 so far. So, if you need a camera that always works, the M240 is probably the best digital camera choice at Leica.

My M3 in 1967 arrived new in box! Ganz Neues! Keine Rf! No Freaking Rangefinder! None, no, nyet, nie, non,.. I had warranty signed by 3 people! Assembly and missing parts, fitted in South Africa. Leitz had a workshop there! Leitz sort of aplogized 18 months later.. Some clients are too fussy! *%$#@.
A friend noted the dreaded corrossion on M9. Fixed. Free! Only had to wait 10+ months!
I would decide if keeping it? The images look nice, but all digitals look super! It's a camera! If you do pro work, always carry a backup. I used 2 bodies when I did weddings etc. Each had a different film make! Bad things happen in labs!
How old is M11? Maybe do a 2nd upload of Firmware or newest. Good Luck!
OH! I still have that M3! Most used camera for many years. Later Pentax Spotmatic (Never serviced/repaired) Nikon-F, need for more lenses. I used my M3 this morning. Again Good Luck.

Years back I installed new firmware on my X-T2 that promised SlowMo capability. And it did. However, som other things got screwed up so Fuji issued "new" firmware what was actually the previous one under the new number to fix the problem within a week. After a month or two yet another new firmware was released that did had SlowMo capabilities without any issues. That's my only firmware story that was actually quite painless...
interesting. I have never had even a small problem with the firmware of 3 generations of fuji cameras. At least Fuji managed to release a fix within a week. it was really painless but thanks for your comment. 👌

Haha, yes, that's probably it. The red dot is the camera's pressure release valve. When it's covered, the pressure rises to a critical level, and it freezes. 😄
Truly sorry for your troubles. On the other hand: Aaaah, my M6 and my Voigtlander Bessa R4A are so much fun, reliable too!

Glad to have you back. I missed your presentation. That lockup that is cured with the battery removal and others have reported it on youtube. Apparently the only way to eliminate this is to send it to Leica support, at least the time of the reporting. I think Thorsten had this issue with his M11. A process which given your experience isn't very satisfying.
Translate to English: Thank you 😄 I believe anyone who had the M11 has mentioned the issue at least once. For me, it still works because I live in Germany. However, if you're an international customer , it's even worse. The 1.6.1 update shows me that it's puely firmware problems and it shouldn't actually need to be sent in for repair. Nonetheless, it really destroys a lot of trust.

@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel My first M11 froze too often, I missed lots of shots. It was replaced but after a few weeks it stopped working. After waiting for 24 hrs for it to wake up with no joy, I returned it. I have the v reliable M10-R now but I far prefer the rendering of the M11.
Get yourself a Sony or a Fuji …you just cant assume a Leica that is evident. Unfortunately not everyone can for different reasons.
I’ve switched to Sony now. Terribly ugly, but it works. The Leica M6 will probably be my only Leica.
The Camera has a neurological issue of the Firmware. I'd rather have.a IIIf, M2 or M3 anyway.

Ask for a new one I have one i actually have 3 get hold of them and absolutely destroy them say they have lost you money jobs just put it on thick start crying 😂
I asked for a replacement due to the freeze error, but at the moment, they can't do anything either. Repairing the bottom palte and waiting for a patch seems to be the only option for now. 🤷♂️

You should make sure to get one that works when you buy it. As soon as the camera has problems or freezes, return it and ask for a new one.
M11 has some random batches of cameras that have this freezing issue... my first one would do that very often right at the startup... Leica exchanged it and the second one I got froze up on me only a couple of times. What helped me was switching to UHS II and faster write speed SD card, and also for some reason disabling the auto switch between EVF and LCD... super unfortunate but hopefully next firmware update will finally fix these issues for everybody
So they just swap you the camera and hope that the next one might be less bad than the previous one. 😅 In the end, the update shows that it is simply a software problem. The UHS-II tip is good though. I had a clip that is definitely due to a read or write error of the memory card. I hope that your current one is now working properly.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel i still get freezes sometimes but very rarely... Thankfully Leica is not my main camera for work so I'm personally still hoping eventually they will fix it with firmware.
Forget about the clinic and just relax. I hear it's a strain for your marriage and I have heard it before from couples, they almost broke up because of that. I am my ex-wife eternally thankful that she said to the doctor trying to push us in to this trajectory that 'if it will happen, it happens and if not, then not'. Basically the same as the doctor after our miscarriage said.
This other doctor in Wuppertal falsified my medical result I found out years later. I gave the report to another urologist here for medical treatment and he asked me if the other doctor told me the findings could have serious implications. He did not, so I was tested again and everything was alright.
My ex-wife was 39 and 42 as she had the kids, just 3 years after getting together and having a miscarriage at the first try. So I think he just tried to push us down that road because of her age and try to make money out of it.
Instead just relaxing helped way more, as another couple that in fact went down that clinical road found out too.
It's no coincidence that most kids are born in April, nine months after summer holidays....
Thank you for sharing your story. It was very interesting to read. It's true that many children are born in April. I can only say that we were accurately diagnosed and that there really was no way around the clinic. At the moment, however, we have put the whole project on hold and are focusing on ourselves again.

I feel your pain! I bought my M11 about one year ago, and it's been plagued with constant bugs. The firmware updates seem to only exacerbate these bugs, sadly. And the weirdest thing is that the bugs come out of nowhere - just turning on the camera and taking a single photo will sometimes cause a bug to occur. As you say, at this price point, bugs should be nonexistent or at least rare. I love the Leica brand, user experience, and the images I'm getting out of the M11, so I'm reluctant to consider other brands. But it's becoming tempting to ditch the M11 and get a Hasselblad X2D or other camera instead.
Oh no, so you also ended up with a faulty model like me. It's best if you, especially if you like Leica, exchange your M11 for a newer version or inquire with Leica support, especially if you're still within the warranty period. There are certainly more flawless examples of the M11. The X2D is also a good choice.
Yeah, mine has been having bugs since I bought it over a year ago. I took it into my local Leica store and they're going to replace the main circuit board - for free, since it's still under warranty. Hopefully this will fix the problem! As for the X2D, an employee at my local camera store who deals with high-end cameras all the time, told me that the X2D as well has problems with bugs! Too bad since I agree it's a good possible alternative to a Leica camera.
@@benjaminparks8032 Yes, I can attest to this! I had the X2D and it def also froze (this being said, so did the GFX 100). Mind you, I used all the recommended memory cards (and diff cards with the diff systems). The GFX froze the least. The X2D and M11 seem to freeze more on a regular. The M11 being the worst (even with firmware 2.1.1 - current as of writing)

Hey, yes, in retrospect, the M10R would have definitely been the better choice. Unfortunately, some things are only known when it's too late.

@@carlosmcse Somehow you've taken over with the internal changes, and the software division is struggling to keep up with fixing everything. My M11 has returned from Wetzlar, and due to the freezes, they can absolutely do nothing except keep putting me off, saying they'll take care of it.
In the end, there's nothing in there that could be omitted. The 240 still had video, which they definitely wouldn't do anymore.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I mean the change from the M240 to the M10. They took things away back then. Hopefully they’ll do the same in the future but I doubt it. The M10R was definitely the last great digital M that followed the simple Leica M ethos. They’ve fucked it all up with the M11 trying to compete with Sony.
Schade. I considered the M11 but weighed bad reports of customer support for a buggy camera and I chose the X2D. The X2D with the XCD 55V costs the same as the M11 with lens, has better color science, better IQ and image stabilization, usw. I have four older Leicas but would never buy a new one for all the reasons you have outlined. So wie Oma sagte, dass is beschissen.
The X2D is really perhaps the better choice. These two manufacturers are on a par in their history. it's actually a shame that leica lets the software lag behind. :(
I had the same frustration... with my m11 freezing right after starting
I sent the camera to new jersey, it worked perfect for a while, but now it freezes sometimes
One recommendation I had from the camera store where I purchased from... in Toronto, Ontario, is that I should never update the camera with any firmware whatsoever, because it brings bugs 🐛
Now I think that, maybe, what causes the camera to act funny is all the info that my phone can send ( between leica app and Samsung) .. maybe
Oh, I feel your pain! Unfortunately, it's already too late for your tip. The freezes were even more frequent with version 1.5 of the software I started with. Meanwhile, the camera has been at Leica in Wetzlar, but they couldn't do anything, and not even 100 pictures later, I experienced another freeze during a job. Very frustrating.
Interesting video. That's why Nikon has their Nikon Professional Service. This better service does of course some money, but if you're a professional, then it's worth it.
Thank you, the Leica service is not bad, but it could be even better. However, I wouldn't call it a professional service. Nikon is certainly much better in that regard.

Not unusual with Leica ..... they may be great optical and mechanical engineers but they tend to be deficient in software expertise. What you describe is typical of almost every Leica I have ever owned with it often taking years before firmware glitches are solved ..... and sometimes they never are. By contrast high production number cameras from Canon, Sony, Fuji et al flag up and fix firmware issues very quickly. It's a fact of life with Leica ..... and one reason why my main cameras are Fuji's and the remaining Leica is a weekend runabout.
interesting that in all the reviews i've watched over the years, things like this have never been addressed in a big way. My M11 is still unusable but then freezes out in a situation where it definitely should not to. I think this will remain my only leica for this reason alone.
Even the hardware design and QC is poor. Many issues with everything from Leica. They used to make good/competitive cameras until 60s, then it went downhill... even during later phases before digital, many manufacturing issues, even with materials/paint etc.

On the M11, I just use one of those round black stickers that you can find in abundance on Amazon. It's more of an office supply. However, I recommend electrical tape instead, which I just used on the M6; it matches the paint job better. ✌️
I hope you'll have better luck after the bug fix software update (and what's more important....good luck in your private life!)

@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Yes, the shutterbox got broken after exact one year. Then the electronical system had a defect... should had been repaired but I insisted in a new camera.... and the kit-lens 24-70 had issues too and was replaced together with the camera. Now I continue photographing with Lumix S1R and stay within L-Mount and can still use my lenses. But I do not trust in the quality of Leica anymore. Had never so much trouble with any other brand.
Wow the sl2 issues also? I just watched a video on the q3 and freezing issues. Maybe we are witnessing the death of Leica…
Interessanter Beitrag. Software hat einfach immer Fehler. Hat sich ja aber anscheinend schon gebessert bei dir. Ich habe letztens wirklich schöne Bilder im Weinberg mit der Familie gemacht. Ich benutzte dafür Film und habe dann den Film im Dunkelsack einfach nicht auf die Filmspule bekommen. Jetzt sind die Bilder dreckig und leicht zerkratzt, hat aber auch was. Irgendwas ist halt immer, gehört irgendwie dazu. Viel Glück für eure weitere Familienplanung.
Film hat ja auch seine Tücken das stimmt wohl. 😄 So kleine Defekte haben ja durchaus auch ihren Charme. Die einzigen Probleme die man hat kommen eigentlich auch nur von nicht gewarteten Kameras.
Oje ich hoffe ich werde mit meiner M11 nicht die selben Probleme haben 🙃
PS: Welche Gegenlichtblende verwendest du da auf dem Objektiv?

in den Bereichen wo ich spreche habe ich die Gegenlichtblende des Fuji 35mm f2 in ein paar anderen shots habe ich eine selbstgedrucke Gegenlichtblende. Normalerweise benutze ich eine 49mm belüftete blende mit 43-49 stepup ring. :D

Not surprised to hear Leica has lock ups and freezes as well. Modern cameras are so heavily dependent on electronics glitches are the norm. 50% of your Leica price point has nothing to do with anything other than brand/logo, so I am not at all surprised with service and expectations being par norm. As you nicely say it's a sub par camera with an expensive brand up front to ask for much. With 3 generations of Fuji I have never had any software problems. At least with Leica I am in the glitch club. 😄
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel If it makes you feel any better my XH2S had a bad crash recently that required a factory reset and move to f/w 4.00 to fix. They're all buggy now :D
My first M11 bricked and was replaced. But I won’t be updating firmwear as my replacement works fine. On the IVF front, here’s some important stats, on the first try IVF has a 27% success rate, on the second try, IVF has roughly a 3% success rate because it only ever works on about 30% of people, for 70% of couples it will never work. I mention this as I work on statistics and looked into this when we couldn’t have children and after my fiends were spending a fortune through unethical clinics trying 7 times!! Obviously beyond 2 or three try’s is pointless. Most people don’t understand this. Best wishes on all fronts.
After watching my video, I don't think you'll be updating your working M11 for a while 😅 Thanks for the information about IVF, and yes, you're right, one should truly understand how the probability distribution of IVF works. Our probabilities are quite good, but there are still some other issues that set us back. And thank you for the well wishes.
In all honesty , my KANTO rebuilt M 3 is smooth beautiful reliable , feels so good to operate , shutter rewind ( yes the Old rewind ) and the handling of the film , all are good , and even better .... than the M A , that had been shipped to Leica for service by prior owner for the shutter feeling " not up to par " , so ... a Good M3 is a great camera.
My M3 is my friend. 1958 Buddha Ear , Single Stroke Chrome. She has new leatherette and brightest viewfinder. Yes .. M3 is it .
I can understand your love for the M3 very well. My M3 embodies a mechanical perfection that Leica only rarely achieves. The M11 definitely does not belong to that category. I even had a thumb rest modeled after the M3 and had it 3D printed.
