- Welcome back to another episode of schofield welding. in this episode we are doing a one year interview from the time Josh took his very first weld test to Where he is now. In this episode Josh is going to talk to you about some of the pit falls and struggles in the oilfield to some of his biggest lessons learned. hope you all enjoy. Josh has been in North Dakota and Colorado. He will talk about buying rig welding trucks to busting and making welding tests. Some of the other things covered is taking care of your money and equipment.

This video gave me the motivation I needed! I start welding school Monday and was super nervous, one of the welding instructors told me that you should wait 5 years before you put a rig together and just work in a shop. But hearing about how Josh did it really helped me.

Awesome video guys. Pretty well sums up my first year with the exception of traveling and buying a camper. I was fortunate enough to work within an hour of home and had been saving money like crazy eating ramen for weeks on end just to buy another jack stand or spare bottles and when I broke out I didn’t owe a penny to any banks or anyone.

In school right now for multicraft industrial maintenance. It has been crazy expensive, but only a fraction of what Josh was talking about spending in his first year. Tool box, hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, diagnostic tools. Been a crazy experience but it is the best thing I have ever done.
Jake know if either of you are going to see this but I start my new job with a local shipyard at the end of this month your videos helped push me through welding school, so thanks, man! stay blessed

Smart man.. ive been helping for 2 years now, im all rigged up and everything but can’t catch a break. I cant stress out enough about CONNECTIONS.if you don’t know the right people they won’t test you.. down here in south tx people are very greedy . But i dont let that get to me , still practice almost every other day so when the day comes im ready..

you got pretty lucky for christmas haha i haven't been home for Christmas in the past 14yrs haha i been pipelining for a little more than 15 yrs so its good to hear your making sure there's at-least a little family time just to keep your sanity, and keeping your sanity is very important in our line of work haha
Here I am 29 years old, served in the military workin Aviation F-18’s, got out and spent 6/7 years doing Sat Com Engineering working with very important companies in space, I much more enjoy my time at my house welding and building things, so I’m her watching this video trying to figure out the best route to get back to Texas from Alaska and make my way into the welding field. I love Alaska, want to learn pipeline then come back to work the Alaska pipeline. Familiar with welding due to fabricating personal things in my shop. With no certs whatsoever, but I also understand that I’m gonna be the small man on the pole and gonna have to learn as the new guy, which i feel i need/want to learn as if i know nothing whatsoever. gonna have to start all over in life but i think it’s worth it. I know this interview is 2 years old, but very valuable information. Thank you guys.

I wanna get into pipelining im in jobcorp for welding and im trying to go to advanced training for it. I absolutely love welding like im not even doing this to make money its fun and I enjoy it. The money is gonna be really good but im here to do something I enjoy

Nice video. If i had no kids back then i would of join to be a pipe welder. Some times the road just leaves you to different directions. Just remember only cus you a pipe welder you make great money. Im a shop welder i run side work after work. Im bless to be making easy 100k a year. Welding has alot of doors to open just be smart and wise

Well those tips will. Completely help your jobs ,these tips great warnings,I have done what you do , years past ,your video ,a good memory lane enjoyed it , there was no social media when I did it ,the amount of bullshitters that tried to fake it to make it unbelievable ,
If it was easy, everyone would do it. Invest your money wisely, and often, otherwise you'll be that 70 year old welder wondering what the hell happened.
I'm 29 been welding since I was 22. I get ideas of things I wanna do and make all the time and I set myself a goal of doing them by the time I'm 35. I tell myself all the time " Dont talk about it, do it"! I'm no different than anybody else. Those 50 and 60 year old welders told their self the same thing when they were 30. Don't just talk about it!
@@christopherwalker1294 hey buddy, is this something a 40 year old guy could start out on as a helper and move into a welder or am I too late, as in too old ? Don't get it twisted I'm a hard worker with some fabrication welding experience with tig, and mig welding. Just no pipeline experience.

I started rig welding 4 years ago .I'm 48 now ., I had been welding for a long time and I took me about. 2year to get the necessary tolls to star. I wish but had done it earlier in my life .just have to remember . Rig welding is not always a steady paycheck. Specially in the beginning. . good luck my friend .

fuckn love u guys. im an acetylene welder, here in ventura California. welding on 4' and below on natural gas pipeline distribution. i havent welded in transmission like you guys. but im working on my certs. i am in the local 250 pipefitters union. currently welding for socal gas.
Man keep getting after it!! No doubt in my mind you will get it. I’ve actually never heard of anyone that did acetylene welds that is way cool.

How can you get on as A helper on A pipeline? Never been A helper on A big pipeline? Interested in all of it not getting any younger. Working in the Industrial pipe welding I have my R stamp with the company iam with. Combo welder boiler tubes tig; wire feed; stick . I wanna get my foot in the door but I don’t know nobody. You guys are my only hope lol. Tired of only working 40 hours A week..
What made you leave the boilermaker's union to be a pipeline welder? What year apprentice were you?

On average what do you helpers bring home every week or two weeks
One thing I always ask myself when someone says you should do this, or you should get that, or get something newer I always ask myself will this thing help me do my job better, be more productive, or proficient at my job. A set of rims will not help you get the job done better hell they may leave you stranded cause they couldnt take the stress and break. If it ain't broke dont fix it

Old vid. But there’s nothing wrong with a tub rig. Most guys here in Canada run tubs. The Texas bed looks cool for sure. But definitely not necessary.
When r startin out and just breaking out, there is no pretending you could lose your job tomorrow. You could and you absolutely will if you dont think that.

While I'm not a welder myself ive know quite a few and ive me a grand total of 2 brothers who were over 60 and still welding and wanted to be welding both are structural welders

It will on depend on where you are at and what you are hauling. I prefer a dually they ride better and its a little extra insurance on your truck when you have four wheel in the back.

So how long did he work as a helper before he got his own rig? And is that just because you don't have the money to buy a rig so you have to work and save, or is it because you've gotta learn from the guy you're helping and build those connections?

I work union construction growth is definitely made in discomfort. I’m 21 I went from sweeping the floor at 19 to building now I’m going to be running a crew of guys in a week but if the boss ask if I feel comfortable doing something obviously he thinks I’m capable. If you want to progress you have to be uncomfortable, that is best thing I’ve learned being in the blue collar world.

A good work ethic goes a long way people will see that you are serious about it and they will help you and put you on jobs but then there are people who won’t help you and won’t put you on jobs

What do you guys mean hi lo gets you money? I've heard that before on here.
Sometimes the high lo will cause a repair or cut out and depending on how many you have. You could be let go.
Im a rig welder but i only work for refretiation pipe my dream is to work for the pipe line but im scare i dont know why.becouse im a good welder i just can make the step forward i dont know were to start

I still need a lot of experience to get but although I want to get straight into getting a job as a pipe welder when I graduate, what do u recommend entering as a helper or just go straight to taking the test to be a welder? Can u please respond..
If you still need a lot of experience, then be a helper first and use your downtime to practice. It helps having the money to spend on coupons for practice, and if you haven't had enough practice, you'll have a hard time passing a test.

Welding & fabrication, (more fab than anything) helping out at a job shop in Atlanta whose owner gave me my legs back after an unrelated injury had me all but bedridden for almost 2 years. Been doing a lot of machining lately, but welding is what I prefer.
Experience is your friend, and not just yours. Other people who have been welding a long time can show you so much, but most times you have to show them you're serious by doing what you need to and asking the right questions.
Good example for you: don't ask anybody "what's the trick to ____?". 'Trick' makes it sound like you're looking for a shortcut. Instead, things like "how do you tell if ___ is ____?" and "what should I look for when ____ might happen" are good ways of conveying your urge to understand more about what you're doing instead of seeming like another guy just looking to hurry up & 'get it done' so he can get his check.
Speed will come with time, so don't worry about doing things fast right away. I see a lot of younger people focus on speed, but if you focus on doing things RIGHT, you'll naturally get faster with time, and won't have to spend so much time fixing things. You'll still mess up, but learning how to fix screwups are a big part of growing in a lot of industries. Hell, if you get good enough at it, you might end up being the one they call to do other people's cutouts & reworks.👍

No problem, bud. You get that school done, and go be a helper to build up cash for a rig truck, machine, & tools while you practice on your downtime. Then, when you break out, you'll have a much bigger sense of accomplishment, and you'll be able to teach new helpers better because you'll know from experience what they're worried about and what they need to learn.
First thing's first though. One step at a time. And don't feel like there's things in school you need to skip over; you'd be surprised how often you might reach for a Tig torch once you get the hang of it, and sanitary stainless work pays alright while you're still at home. Don't ignore anything; you wouldn't believe the little things you pick up on just watching other people work. You'll find out about tools you didn't even think existed, and then you get one and wonder how you ever did without it. Best example of that is the Estwing chipping hammer; I used those $5 spring handled ones forever, and the minute I used that Estwing, I couldn't believe how much easier the slag came off. Dross from plasma & torch cutting, too.
Gas stations will strip your money people everything in those places are so price jacked my husband would always do this and you really don't realize how bad they get ya but they do good advice
Is it realistic for someone who is 40+ years old with welding experiance to get involved in the pipeline industry as a helper?. If so, how?.

I've been asking myself this same question. All the videos I have seen have younger people everywhere. I'm wondering if at 46 I am too late to the game. I grew up around welders and the industrial life in southern Mississippi but moved to Texas after serving 4 yeas in the Army as a Mechanic 19 years ago. I have two kids and a grandchild now and am about to be empty nested. I've stayed close to home cause of my family, but now I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make some serious money. I have always loved welding, but chose other careers cause of my family and situations at that time. I started to go to vocational welding school right out of high school but changed to machining before I even got to 7018. I graduated as a certified machinist, but then all the machine jobs moved up north and I was not in a position to chase them. (What a waste of time. I should have just stuck with welding!) What would be your suggestion to get back into the life at this age? What jobs should I look for and start with? Do I need to go back to school first? Seeing as I'm in Texas, I'm pretty sure that the expectations are higher here therefore harder to get in. Do you think I will have to go elsewhere to "sneak" in? Or do you guys think I'm just too late and need some mid-life counseling?

Jason it means busting xrays or catching repairs which means just a few of those and they lay you off meaning your not making money anymore.
I want to be as good as you Jacob I know it takes a lot of practice work,time, patience etc.but I want to b a pipe welder.im two months in going to college school for welding I need five more months to graduate.

I am in Pennsylvania working a fab job as a helper. Another helper here stays out late almost every night getting drunk. LoL I do not understand how he can function at work.

This is good info and all but why not do a video on something more useful like, how you prepare for tax season or the percentage you think is good to save over the year for taxes? These are things that I always think about. Unfortunately, there isn’t a video or a discussion about it anywhere. At least not to my knowledge.
We can do one for taxes but my biggest suggestion is do not do them yourself. Hire an accountant

Jacob Schofield Ahh it’s alright. I figured it out after a few weeks. I built my whole truck set up before even working in the oilfields. And when I got here I had to sell it because my truck blew up. So I had to sell my $9k truck for $3k. Then I bought a new truck. I got things fingered out now. Now I have a 2019 f350 dually with my sa200 in the back. I’m almost all rigged out.
I'm a laborer by trade a few years ago I was on a low paying job and didn't want to drag up job was coming to a end and just a handful of us were left on job doing punch list stuff I was really wanting off this job but my B A was a good friend of mine and had put me on some real good work but called and needed man power on this job and out of respect for what he had done gor me I helped him anyway the day came they handed out layoffs I watched a electrician literally come to tears an d cry saying he couldn't live on unemployment a few weeks this man was mid 60s age after talking to this guy he had nothing put back had a new truck new camper riding a new Harley wife had a new car had just built a new home and was in debt to his ears why in the hell would someone do all this at his age instead of putting money back for retirement sorry but I had to walk away from him feeling un sorry fo r him an d his situation but I have went out on jobs as a steward and have handed out checks and watched guys borrowing money 2 to 3 days later because of partying it up or spending it all at th d casino just nuts!

Food on the road. You will be SO MUCH better off buying a loaf of bread and lunch meats and make sandwiches. Buy good wheat bread or something that has flavor, good meets from the deli country not the prepackaged stuff. The precut cheese and pickles if you like and your health will be better and spend a whole lot less money. A 12v cooler can pay for itself. There are even 12v coffee pots and the like. If you have to buy premade, look for something like subway where you can buy a footlong and eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner. Food on the road can be more expensive than your welder fuel if you're not careful.
