That is a really cool & easy mod. Listening to the intro track, I was reminded of what I learned taking music theory in college. "Bach 'permanently stuns' a kitten everytime you use parallel fifths." I always thought that was dumb, but you have validated my stance today. Stellar writing and playing!
Thank you Garreth! If you haven’t tried yet, take a 12AT7 in the left position of the HMV2. You’ll find it cleans up very nicely when rolling the volume back on your guitar. That’s how we ship them now. You still get all the gain when you roll back up as well. Try it out sometime and hopefully you’ll enjoy it that much more!
I have seen these before in adds and so forth but this is my first listen through. Edutainment at its best. Mr. Thorn bringing the roses. (see what I did there, oh I crack myself up.)

@@LegendaryTones I have a jcm800 mini and a friedman runt 50. I used one gujtsr with jb and 59 pickups and one guitar with emgs. Do you suggest this or the lynch mod?
@@TheDistortionPrinciple The Lynch Mod isnt currently being made at the moment as it was a limited handwired run. We ARE looking at a PCB version but that will be later in the year or early next year. They are similar in voicing but the Lynch has more bass in both settings. But since you’re using pretty high output pickups, I would think less bass would be useful and you’d likely keep the bass/deep switch on the low position. I really like what I hear with the HMV2E in the mini 800 heads. That’s the platform I’d use. Friedman is a great designer and I’m not sure I’d personally put more gain in one, but I do have customers that have done so and are happy. The 20 and 50 watt Friedman Runts would use a reverse wire version though.
Always like the way the late 70's JMP 2203 & 2204's with the Dagnall's sounded. The later 80's horizontal input with Drake's sounded too stiff & bright.

As usual that price! This tone chasing is not cheap. Killer sound and playing. I want to be more like this guy. New dsl coming bet I won’t need to get jacked for these funds to buy this cool as it is. Let’s jam two tubes in one socket!😂🤣😂
Did you own one of the early devices like this......didn't Soldano start out with a similar unit or was it Rivera......the 6K11 tube was a big thing at the time....a TV compactron tube. Instead of a dual triode as with a 12ax7 type, the 6K11was a triple triode. BUT either way, a very interesting device as a plug in add on for any cathode follower type amplifier circuit.
Yes, i worked with Mike Soldano in fact on this. The original Hot Mod was a bit over the top for my tastes and a little noisy and bass heavy. But still a very cool device for it’s time. This is a revised version now using more common preamp tubes and Andy Marshall of THD electronics also helped with the tuning I wanted to achieve in the new design.
Great amp! I have the same one as well. I was lucky to find mine (first year 1981) with its companion 1x12 extension cab. Makes for an awesome mini-stack and both cabs are loaded with G12 65 watt Celestions which I highly recommend with these master volume amps.
Serious question please. What are the differences/pros/cons of this tube mod versus hitting the front of the amp harder with some sort of boost? We know the latter gives you a tonne of gain out the speaker also. Gets there through the pre-amp in a different way. I’m genuinely curious as to the differences if you feel there are some to consider.
So, Pete I can pop this in my plexi type and have Soldano is, Jose is, Lee is type gain? In the same breadth, remove it and go back to my normal setup of blasting the power tubes? I have been toying with getting a mod, but DO NOT want to spoil my amp, as it is. This sounds practical as all get out!! Thanks, Eric
That's correct. It's mod that's layered on top of the cathode follower, which Soldano and Friedman and others have performed, but we're taking it external rather than cutting into your amp with a permanent mod.
I would be curious to see what the Hot Mod V2 Evo (reverse wired version, because of the built in effects loop) would sound like on the JCM 900 4100's first channel. I realize this was designed for older Marshall models, but this might be a way to bypass Channel B's clipping diode without mods. Don't get me wrong, I think the JCM 900's channel B is fine. If I need a bit more boost, I just add a pedal on the way in. But this might be a neat experiment to add tube gain to the 900. The only question is whether channel A uses the clipping diode at all. Then it would make it a moot point.
Unfortunately it won’t work in the 4500 as it doesn’t have the traditional cathode follower layout. Here’s a compatibility list for other amps though if interested: legendarytones.com/will-my-hot-mod-v2-work-in-x-amp/

That is a copy per se of the Kasha Rock Mod. John has been making those for 15-20 years. John has been building preamps and modding Marshalls since the 80s.
No, not a copy of John’s work at all. He replaced the V1 position with an additional preamp stage. This one goes into V2 as the cathode follower and layers a gain stage on top of the cathode follower. This design is actually an update of the original Soldano Hot Mod that Mike and team built from the late 1980’s and early 1990s. But it’s been refined quite a bit with various circuit improvements.
I have a Marshall SV20 but I also have a Friedman JJ Junior. I’ve always thought of the JJ as my hot rodded Marshall. I’m wondering if I need this. My G.A.S is definitely saying yes…lol
With the SV20, the HMV2E will make the amp loud without a master volume. So it’s compatible, but it would need to be a high-volume thing they way it interacts in that circuit.
Ha I thought nobody knew about these. Just be careful when purchasing BECAUSE!! --- Read the list on the website...depending on what amp you have, you must get the regular version or the RI version, for hardwired or signature reissues. The Lynch Mod version is extra great, has a pot control for shaping tones further. Hope this helps!! Thanks Pete.
Brings back memories of the Soldano Hot Mod (80's) with 6K11 tube (triple triode). The HM had so much gain in a 68 Super Lead it was pretty much useless for my taste. Now if you rewire the Super Lead Preamp to a JCM800 configuration (easy to do), that is my kind of sound. Similar to what the V2 Evo does.
Yes, I worked closely with both Mike Soldano and Andy Marshall to tune the circuit. The original Soldano was a bit over-the-top and I found also bass-heavy. So think of this as a refined, and lower noise version but now doesn’t need an oddball and hard to find tube.
I remember Guitar Player's review of the Soldano unit back in the day... They said using it on a non-master volume Marshall turned the amp into "the Terminator on steroids"
i wonder if you can use 3 mods simultaneously. My JCM800 with a Seymour Duncan TB6 pickup has plenty of gain for me, but if youre looking for higher gain, checkout the Orange TH100. You can find them pretty cheap used and they have 4 preamp tubes, and sound amazing imo.
The mod can’t work in every tube position or amp. Only in an amp that uses what’s called a cathode follower tone stack. The mod then “layers” it’s extra gain stage on top of the cathode follower.
Great song to demo. Lizzy rulz! More and more folks are getting these. I like my 4104 stock, gain dimed, master around 4. Have a SLX 2100 to compare it to. The 4104/2204 cuts better in a band mix with second guitarist who uses one.
It won’t in the Origin unfortunately as it doesn’t use a cathode follower tone stack which is what the Hot Mod V2 Evo needs to see in order to connect and add its gain stage. In case it’s of interest in the future, here’s the compatibility list: legendarytones.com/will-my-hot-mod-v2-work-in-x-amp/ Thanks for your interest!
Thank you for your interest. This will work in a wide range of Marshall’s. Here’s the current list at this link: legendarytones.com/will-my-hot-mod-v2-work-in-x-amp/
I have a Marshall JCM 800 2205 which had diodes for extra gain. I wonder how this would sound with it. Or is this more suited for the non master volume Marshall’s?
Hey! I'm a tone geek and guitar amp freak!! But what I really want to know is - "are you gonna go my way?" Seriously though, I have a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Reissue and was wondering if this will work with it. I believe the preamp tubes are too close together for it to work? Thanks and spanks
I’m not sure about that particular circuit, but if it follows the originals with a cathode follower it would work. The unit actually rotates at its base as well to fit into those tighter spots. So we thought about that too.
Well, I found out from Fender that the amp is fixed bias so it won't work, but I'm definitely gonna try it on my next amp which will most assuredly be "Marshall inspired". Thanks for your time :)
Can’t wait to buy this. And then buy a Marshall amp
You don't need a Marshall amp just get one of these.

Sounds crazy, but I wonder what this would to to a NMV amp? Like a JTM-45 cone that I have??
Clone,dammit! This phone sucks.
@@howiewells6321 Without a MV, the volume would be pushed before saturation, so in other words, it would be loud :)
@@LegendaryTones I figured as much... Thanks!
This cat can make a one string uke sound amazing.
What a clever idea!
Does this fall into the category 'thinking out of the box', or would this be 'thinking inside the box'? 😁
Pretty cool sound!
@@LegendaryTones Ok. Thank you!
Killer tune man. Love the verse riff, very very much.
Does this just work for Marshall amps?
I'm pretty sure this is an extension of that done with Mike Soldano's Blessing. They were talking about it on tone talk awhile back!
@@NoahRichardHarris Yes! In fact, it was going to be Soldano branded originally, but then Mike sold his company and semi-retired.
Great. Does it work in other models like Marshall Origin 20 ?
It won’t in the Origin unfortunately as it doesn’t use a cathode follower tone stack which is what the Hot Mod V2 Evo needs to see in order to connect and add its gain stage.
In case it’s of interest in the future, here’s the compatibility list:

Hi Pete quick question I was just wondering can this be used on Marshall valvestate or joyo zombie 2 or like a crate gt80dsp???
Can this only be done to older Marshalls? And is this something you can do to a tube combo amp for more gain?
Thank you for your interest. This will work in a wide range of Marshall’s. Here’s the current list at this link:

I have a Marshall JCM 800 2205 which had diodes for extra gain. I wonder how this would sound with it. Or is this more suited for the non master volume Marshall’s?
It will work in the earlier versions of the 2205 and 2210. Here’s info on that:
legendarytones.com/will-my-hot-mod-v2-work-in-x-amp/
Oh, mine is 2205 year 1987. Oh well I guess I’ll have to buy another vintage Marshall, this is the perfect excuse to tell my wife😂
@@johnsaras1 I won’t comment except to say “I’ve been there 😂”
Hey! I'm a tone geek and guitar amp freak!! But what I really want to know is - "are you gonna go my way?"
Seriously though, I have a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Reissue and was wondering if this will work with it. I believe the preamp tubes are too close together for it to work?
Thanks and spanks
I’m not sure about that particular circuit, but if it follows the originals with a cathode follower it would work. The unit actually rotates at its base as well to fit into those tighter spots. So we thought about that too.
@@LegendaryTones Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply.. I'll check with Fender about the circuit. Thanks!
Well, I found out from Fender that the amp is fixed bias so it won't work, but I'm definitely gonna try it on my next amp which will most assuredly be "Marshall inspired". Thanks for your time :)
