    it was such a small, fleeting moment, but what made Keitaro my favorite character was him talking about how learning about history is what allows us to understand the present; it's so rare to see any piece of media--at all--take this idea and actually do anything with it. While I wouldn't call that the main theme of 13 Sentinels, or even one of the biggest ones, the fact that it's still present at all just made my little history-loving heart sing. Great game, for sure.

      I think the moment where 2188 Keitaro talks about how the Pacific War was the most fascinating point in history and how he'd love to live in it is the moment that got me *really* invested in 13 Sentinels, he is now one of my favourite characters in all of fiction, I absolutely adore him, he has a fantastic story, he's just so fucking good.

    I find it entertaining how you find destruction complicated, cuz for me it was a very much needed break from all the brain melt happening in remembrance, which is why for me its so comfortable to just click demolition blade and seeing big numbers pop up after all the brain overload i accumulated in remembrance.

      Haha demolition blade go brrr

      @DLxxx 4 роки тому +9

      Same, lol. It really helps to break up from the potential story overload you can get from the ulra dense Remembrance section. In general, the way you switch between sections of the game does wonders to help freshen up your experience every time you jump back into something.

    I'm with you about the story: I wasn't particularly *emotionally* involved, but I *HAD TO KNOW* where it was going once I got started.

    Its not about humans vs aliens
    Or good vs evil
    The only conflict that really matters...
    Is hemboiger vs yakisoba pan

    Great way to word this game.
    This game was one of the best expierences I've had with a video game in a long time. So much nuance and attention to detail with themeing and characters. I was invested and felt thouroghly paid off for that investment

      Few games have stories that are so well written as 13 Sentinels, its actually insanely impressive and you can tell years were spent carefully writing the whole thing. I really hope they keep it up with their future games, this is a new high for Vanillaware.

  • @suddenlycrows
    @suddenlycrows Рік тому +3

    A late reaction but Vanillaware has always been about the super detailed, super tasty looking food. I'd like to think that they did that for their other games too to do exactly what you said. The Pooka village in Odin Sphere is always so cozy and welcoming and the travelling chef's restaurant will always be a great respite mid-dungeon because the food Always. Looks. So. Good. I've been a fan of Vanillaware forever but I never really thought about their emphasis on food until you brought it up here! Good insight.

    amazing video so happy to see more people talk about this game. I really liked how you talked about the theme on "Passing the torch" since that was my favorite theme in the game. I really liked how you pointed out that the character who failed are adults obsessed with the past.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  4 роки тому +2

      I loved that theme a lot, and I wish more fiction was willing to execute it in such a subtle fashion. So many stories just default to "well you have to love bad people if they're your family!" and I hate it

    • @thebluePrincess5904
      @thebluePrincess5904 4 роки тому +2

      @@culIen yeah I think my favorite part of the The Passing Torch theme is how it ties into a much of smaller themes on the game like Reincarnation, legacy, and redeeming sins of the past. Also one of my favorite characters who ties into the theme is 426 since he’s the first adult character to realize the importance of having faith in the next generation and does all he can to help them grasp their future

    • @AdeptArcanist
      @AdeptArcanist 3 роки тому

      @@thebluePrincess5904 god, yeah. The scenes where my understanding of 426’s motivation came together were the closest this game got me to crying.

    I agree with this is an RTS mode for people that don't like RTS. I love turn based strategy and that's what the combat is due to time pausing. I thought the combat mode from trailers looks horrible, but it grew on my VERY fast, and I loved it honestly. After getting all the trophies, I bought the other 2 Vanillaware games on PS4, and plan to purchase all future. Great dev team.

    I think the cool thing about this game is the freedom to choose (to some extent, at least) what order you experience the story in. When I first started playing the game, I started with a character Iiked, and then picked paths based on what currently had me interested. I'd complete a chapter of someone's story and I'd either feel like I had to know what would happen next with them, OR I'd be super interested in the story of one of the characters involved in the story I had just seen and I'd switch to them. I feel like there's no "right order" to play through the story in and tell my friends that I've gotten to buy the game to just follow what they find interesting. I immediately replayed this game with my boyfriend after finishing it the first time because I was so excited to show him the characters and plot, but the order we did it in was different and it gave us a very different experience to what I had when I played it myself.
    Also, Keitaro Miura has my whole heart (and Nenji is a good boy)
    Also also: Hello fellow sentry gun spammer, that carried me through destruction and I love that the sentry gun character always had way more damage than anyone else on the squad. Sentry gun is life.

    Sorry, unpopular opinion here :), but this games feels complex and convoluted just for the sake of being complex and convoluted. Sure, the pay-off at the end is great and it the plot-twists are 100% hit. The hand-drawn graphics (so far, the impression is that everybody claim they are hand drawn, but ot confirmed anywhere?) are nice, as well as the English voice actors. I just think that story is being too much farfetched because it was intended to be complicated, as its main driver. Nowadays, this is a tendency we find often in video games that are narrative driven; if the story is not convoluted nor overarched, it is labelled as cliché or building on existing generic stereotypes (save the world). Developers and scenarist have to bring more complex stories to differentiate themselves from existing baselines. I still feel that AR13S uses one-dimensional characters, and the plot tries to tie them altogether in the best way it could? Whether that was necessary? It was the intention since the start of the developers.

      I apologize for annoying you then, I just went off what the game and Google told me without much of a second thought. Pan is just another word for bread, so I personally don't find it to be too big of a deal. Oh well!
