I just finished 13 sentinels last week and I have been feeling almost a profound sadness. Like the feeling you would get when a friend moves away. You know you will be able to see them again and they are just a phone call away but things will never be the same as they were when you were together all the time. Life is just different going forward. I have no idea what Vanillaware has in the works for their next title but needless to say I'm going to be along for the ride. 13 Sentinels has been cemented in the list of greatest games I have ever played
Help I’m going through this right now. I don’t know what to do and none of the other vanillaware games seem like my type of thing. All other games are super boring to me now 😭
@@sutoramuneit’s called postgame blues. I only get it with really impactful and long JRPGs. 13 Sentinels hit me hard, I loved it. All you can do is mull it over and appreciate the time you had. Now if I were to recommend another vanillaware game, it would be Odin Sphere Leiftrasir. It’s got really similar storytelling, but divied up with hack and slash combat. Avoid classic mode, and set it to easy if you need to. The story comes together fantastically in the end. I hope you give it a shot and I hope you enjoy it if you do!
Ive totally been considering it! Its a bit more fan-servicy than what i normally play so im a little hesitant, but your def making me reconsider. ill prob play it after i finish persona 3 reload once it comes out@@dkdevil3490
This is a turning point for Vanillaware. It shows that they can truly do everything, and if they next game is anything short of spectacular I'd be concerned. I love all their games but 13 Sentinels is such a GIGANTIC advancement for them. They would have to come out and say they they're not going to be a VN developer if they want to temper expectations.
This video made me get into the game. 4th play through, 140 hours later and watching this video again brings a tear to my eye, thank you for putting your heart into this the way Vanillaware did for this masterpiece❤
i really appreciate the extra effort that went through to the subtitles! :D color, fonts, blurryness, placement everything sold the atmosphere perfectly
I've loved this game ever since it came out in the west. I've never experienced such a story before, so much twist and turns, so much emotions, so much nostalgia and yet it feels so original. I am so happy that it is finally receiving the attention it deserves with the switch release. Thank you for making this, surely, wonderful video 😊
I personally can’t stand the English dub. The exaggerated pitch and tones the English VAs do for anime works in general just take me out of the experience. It’s especially bad when they add in honorifics which don’t exist in the English language. But hey, to each their own. I’m just glad I was able to play it when first came out in Japan in 2019.
@Sage I watch anime in sub and most of the time i don’t notice the Va’s in other anime lol. Only voice that stuck out to me was Kenjiro Tsuda who voices Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen
I didn’t grow up with very much sci-fi. Never really took any interest in the genre, and any steps I’ve taken into it I found okay at best. So when I heard 13 Sentinels described as a time-travel sci-fi epic, I was hesitant, but any time I heard its name it was coupled with immense praise and love of the game. I had recently bought a PS5 with the express purpose of playing all the amazing single player Sony exclusives I had been told I was missing, so I picked it up. I played through this story slowly at first, and then all at once. I couldn’t put it down. I grew to adore every character (though I too had my favorites), found myself crying in some moments, and was in constant awe of the brilliant art style. If I can say anything about this game, it’s that you don’t need to be a fan of science fiction, or of visual novels to enjoy this game. If you’re looking for a story that will resonate with you and be on your mind months after finishing it, then it would be a shame to miss this one.
I've been hungering more video essays on this game, thank you so much. Also thank you for bringing up the character moments in the battle sections, they're some of my favorite moments.
Vanillaware food is really so iconic. I wasn't quite sure Unicorn Overlord was Vanillaware until they brought out the food. I wasn't sure about 13 Sentinels either because I'm not a sci fi kind of guy but it's Vanillaware. Good to know they'll never let me down at all. One of my favorite producers ever. Also I have Kawatani to thank for giving me my favorite husbando.
Joe, you're genuinely one of the best video essayists (if you're even using that particular title) on UA-cam. Certainly the single best one in the field of anime. I mean that quite sincerely, even if I initially didn't think I cared for a particular piece of media, your videos are such artworks in and of themselves that I can't help but be swept up in your enthusiasm.
I'm not watching this because it's been sitting on my shelf for months waiting to be played and I've been avoiding spoilers. But I am taking this vid popping up as the sign that it's long overdue to get started playing.
Thank you so much for this video, I absolutely loved playing 13 sentinels and now I love watching new people play the game and discovering the expert narrative. NGL I almost teared up multiple times during this video.
Man I love this video! It paints such a compelling story and shows so much love for this game and everything that inspired it! Back when you made this video it inspired me to play the game. And even though I have not finished it yet, its still one of my favorite games Ive ever played! The world and the characters and everything about it are just so impactful and memorable! I still think of it and this video fondly and I just decided to pick up the War of the Worlds book as well because of this. So thank you for making this!
Just discovered this channel and it is amazing! I can listen to this guy talk about anything and everything all day long! His voice is so calming and yet unsettling. I imagine him telling scary stories in the dark and yet it's so calming. Listen to this while working third shift and I forget about my dreary job for a little bit.
This games convoluted storyline, that somehow makes perfect sense by the time you complete it, is so masterfully done. The fact that Vanillaware took every sci-fi idea and put it into one cohesive story is mind boggling to me. 10/10 probably should play again.
This might be a bit controversial but i use a Hacked switch and me being a student i don't have nowhere near enough money to buy all the games i want to play. 13 Sentinels is the first game ever that made me feel like shit while i was playing, i could feel the passion and love put into this game bursting through the screen, it was like watching multiple peoples childhood dreams be given form into a video game. Yeah... this game right here, it was a masterpiece. I loved every second of my time with it. Truly one for the Aegis. You reading this comment, why? Just get to playing the game already. Go! Now!
You know, as someone who is really passionate about a lot of things that are niche/esoteric but can also still enjoy some more popular/normie things with normie people I’ve always been able to completely understand and not mind the “it’s cool, but not for me” or hell, even the blatant “nah, that shit’s weird bro, nerd lmao” perspective. I’ve heard it all well enough and well, to each their own you know, who cares. But man, if it’s only one time that it does hurt me it’s for this work of art. From the moment I played this game and realized how it was going to play out I chuckled and said “ohhh okay, so it’s like this huh”. While imo, it might be one of the most properly told complex stories, it’s very nature can still make it easy to get lost in or hard to parse for most people. It’s simply the farthest from a “turn your brain off” work of fiction and you have to really be into it and care to stick through it to the end and I think that’s where it might have lost some people. They’ll get lost and lose interest quick or even just didn’t have enough initial interest to have to work their brain to put it together and get back on track. And well, I guess sometimes I’ve just been recommending it to the wrong type of people, and I mean it’s obviously not something to recommend to just anyone and there is nothing wrong with that. But just saying, darn wish everybody could see it’s greatness. I’m seriously not ever usually an annoying fan about my tastes or opinions but if it’s one game I’d die on a hill for, shamelessly shill and sing it’s praises to everyone I know for it’s this one. Great video and thanks for helping spread the gospel of this masterful work of art! Just knowing it got somebody out there interested in it and are possibly playing it at this very moment thanks to you makes all the difference.
Man! Your content soo good. Very soothing to listen. Man you definitely deserve more attention. Can't wait to see 1 mill sub soon. Well done man. I just can't get enough of your content. I feel like this is destined to be one of those games that is basically fated to be a true cult classic. Niche in pretty much every sense of the word. Definitely one of my absolute favorites of the last few years.
Currently 8 hours in on my first ever play through of this game and so far it’s been incredible. Really surpassed to see you post a video about the game. Keep up the fantastic videos!
Glad to hear people put it in the way it really is for some of these games: not just an amazing story but one of the best in the sci-fi genre. When it comes to stuff like the Xenoblade trilogy, the original trilogy of Mass Effect, Nier, Zero Escape, and this, these amazing stories show that it’s less about being games and more just being amazing and genre defining sci-fi stories After playing some of Xenoblade 3 now that it’s finally out, that’s more clear than ever before
This game still holds the greatest payoff in storytelling for me, when it all comes together and everything is revealed... I just remember sitting on my couch in a catatonic state while the pieces fell into place, and I jumped up as the final piece fit, screaming, HOLY SHIT! THATS! AND THAT MEANS! HOLY SHIT! I then began laughing like a madman, and then the emotions of what the story had proposed hit me like a truck. I then realized I had lost my innocence... I could never go back to the ignorance I once existed in, and I was truly heartbroken. But with that sadness came the happiness that I just played the best story so far in my gaming career. What a journey
Thank God it came to switch, I was waiting for a PC release for a long time and it played flawlessly on Yuzu. After all the hype and anticipation I had it was a surprise seeing it actually surpassing them, one of the games of the generation.
"As Always thanks for " the great recommendation ! I am actually not a fan of sci-fi nor Kaijuus and mecha, but i am so glad I gave it a try ! I watched the first minute of the video and chose to stop and play the game before watching it. Now i am 100% finished, and as you say i am sad to think that i will never find a game like this again. Such a great experience !
Wow, thank you for trying it! That's exactly what I hope when I make these videos, that more people give these hidden gems a chance, so I'm honored you gave it a shot :) and I'm so pleased you liked it! It truly is a one-of-a-kind experience.
whenever I talk about this game witha homie we always get into a huge conversation on how big this story is. it isn't perfect but damn its a great time.
I first bought the game on the PS4 a little after it came out, I enjoyed it, but it got to a point when I stopped out of a lack of interest. When it came out on the Switch, I got a copy for the system since I prefer playing games on handheld mode. I've been hooked on it so hard and I'm currently half way through it, so you know I'm jazzed that this video came out. Not watching it though in case there are any spoilers, which so far, I assume this game has a gajillion of.
don't worry, you can watch it without being spoiled. the video is more like a preparation & recommendation to the game than anything else. don't believe me? 22:29 just watch from here.
Vanillaware is one of the most underrated studios ever. They've been releasing one cult classic after another since the PS2 days.
Can you please recommend me some Vanillaware games, thank you!!
@@diveintothebeyond8426 Odin Sphere is my favorite. Dragon's Crown and Muramasa: The Demon Blade are great starting points as well.

After all the hype and anticipation I had it was a surprise seeing it actually surpassing them, one of the games of the generation.
I hope I can play this game someday. I played many of Vanillaware games and loved them all.
In conclusion this game is dope as fuck please try it out for yourselves
Liked n Subscribed just for the video's title
This game is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Nice editing.
Love Vanillaware, love this video
whenever I talk about this game witha homie we always get into a huge conversation on how big this story is.
it isn't perfect but damn its a great time.
I've wanted to play this for a long time, hopefully someday it comes to Steam.
This such an amazing game!
Very well stated.
First VW game 😊 loved it and then I went back and purchased their backlog of games.
This is easily Vanillaware’s best game. Frankly, it’s a masterpiece and one of the best games on PS4.
