Works like a champ since I only use it in the summer and never have to touch it. I should do a video on it....
Good idea on the rubber hose to prevent it moving on its own. In my case the pressure from the actuator was so great it wouldnt move at all once put in place
I am trying to turn the little white knob but I think it is going to break something. So, I need to take 1 bolt out, pry it up, and then I should be able to turn it?
@@Nordic_Mechanic Today I was able to look behind the glove box and put a right angle set of pliers on the white piece of plastic on top of the blend value actuator and turn it from cold to hot. It took a few tries to turn it but I was successful. Its possible to use a small vise grip and lock it onto the top white plastic piece. Then use it like a handle for the future.
@@Nordic_Mechanic My 2003 Grand Marquis has 372K miles. This fix is great because I most likely will get rid of the car next year with over 400K miles. The cheapest quote I got was $375 to change the blend door actuator. If I clamp on a vise grip I'll just turn it in the spring for air conditioning. If I had about half the miles I might have fixed it.
The break the bolts that you can't get, break the holes off on the new actautor. Slap it on there with one bolt and you're good to go for another decade or two. I'm just going to replace mine. I'm not going to remove my airbag multiple times in a row for each season.
what are those cables going down across to a looks like a computer or some sort? I seen a couple of videos with those cables going to that black box thing. when I took off my air bag its empty. just the mount by itself.
Veikra thanks a lot bud! I did my actuator replacement. when I bought my 99 interceptor it was stuck on AC cold. so it took me about a year to drop the dash and try to remove the actuater but no luck. so I lift the actuater to move lever to heat. great winter. now its hot. so I look up your video and replace actuater dorman brand. plug my actuator back bolt everything up. and its still on hot. any ideas? manual climate. thanks
I have a 04 mercury grand marquis I just bought few weeks back 77k miles and I checked the air because it was hot out when I bought it now it's cold and the heat don't work only air will this work for heat on my car
yes, only difference is you have auto temperature control, we dont. Same part, same problem is most likely the cause. 77k that's good for a long while, almost brand new !
Can you help me my 04 grand marquis does not blow at all the blend door is clicking but no heat or air blows out the vents at all. what could be the problem? compressor comes on and off and the line is cold. but nothing blows out the vents at all.
Thanks for the reply. I fixed it the problem was the Blower Motor Resistor. It is located under the hood passenger side just under the two heater core hoes it is the Resistor that powers the blower motor. It's was a B❗⬆#h to replace but I did it. One more thing. I replaced the Blend Door Actuator but it makes a clicking sound just like the old one?
How did you use the hose for this? When you did the job do you think you could get a long screw driver under the duck vent to push the lever from cold to hot or hot to cold. Mine is stuck on cold and its getting cold here in New England
Great video! BUT THERES NO NEED TO DO THIS!!!!! All you have to do is get a 3/4 inch by 3/4 hose barbed ball valve and put it on your heater hose! Then all you have to do is pop your hood and open/close the valve. NO disassembly required!
But you still wont get AC in the summer AND you may be blocking the engine's coolant flow before thermostat opens since heatercore is used as the bypass in most cars.
I’m still having trouble with this...I unplugged the blend door but soon as I start driving the switch moves back to heat on it’s on. It will not stay in ac mode. I’m so frustrated!! Please help!!!!
it does not affect the core. It bypasses the blend door only. You should unplug the wiring on the blend door when doing this so it no longer moves. The whole process takes about 10 mins.
Veikra yes I found the problem, it was pretty easy lol I found a zip tie thinking it was left over because of emergency lights or wiring but once I removed the passenger air bag the zip tie was for the lever to change it to cold or heat probably left by the Police Department...I’m from way south Texas and we never get cold and never had to use heat until today but it’s temporarily out fixed
I have an 03 interceptor (crown vic). Its not moving any warm or cold air when I turn the heat or AC on. I checked fuses, relays and tested the blower motor. Would the blend door not allow air to move? I hate to pull a part that's not defective and waste money. I'm just wondering if there's anything else I should check? It's been almost two weeks with no heat and temps are in the teens and low twenties. It sucks.
Problem solved! I checked for power to the fan switch and had nothing. Then I checked fuses again and found one located on the passenger side under the hood. It was a burnt 50 amp. Kind of embarrassing that I missed it but I was moving quick. Finally warmed up a little today.
Drill a little hole and put a rod through the hole to the tab then you can just push or pull the rod instead of taking the airbag and vent apart each time
It's your OTHER actuator that it bad then. But lucky you, it's much easier to replacement than this one on your car. Replace it it's about 34$ It's called the Mode Actuator.
it could be stuck in the middle or a pathway is disconnected and it somehow doesnt pull air through them. Check this blend door first . Its the most common failure
@@Nordic_Mechanic I just figured out a simpler way on my 2004 crown victoria. It was stuck on heat. I simply disconnected negative battery terminal and pushed a/c and it kicked on. Spread the word.
@@franknabozny6062 It means your actuator isnt completely dead, but on it's way out. It started working again enough for it to go to cold. Something to try first before doing what in the video.
Next time, pull the black plastic piece out of the way, spiral a piece of hanger wire around hinge, route it to accessible under dash. And you’ll never have to take it apart again.
All you experts saying to just block the hot water flow as an easier fix need to know that my blend door on 2008 Grand Marquis is stuck in cooling position so I have no heat.
Exactly why I do it like this. It work both way and it's faster than installing other stuff. I dont use the car enough to warrant the real fix although I may do it for sake of making a video if this video hits 100k. I have a good shortcut to save a lot of disassembly of dash.
My 03 Marauder had that issue in 05 , 07, 08. Cost me 500.00 per the dealer to replace the control head each time.. Then I heaRD OF A GUY BACK EAST THAT REPLACES SOME FAULTY CIRCUITS in the head and I haven't had the issue since.
Michael Medeiros. Your comment was really funny and had me rolling ....that shit seems to always happen to me too . The video segments that seem to be unimportant to these people always turn out to be the complicated (what-now) part of the fix . No offense intended ....just funny !
Michael Medeiros in my grand marquis I had the same problem getting the airbag out but I looked underneath the air bag and there’s 2 screws underneath it that needed to be removed as well
All of this is a waste of time if you just want to manually control the heat without fixing the blend door. All you do is put a brass plumbing shut off valve on the heater hose under the hood going into the heater core, voila, turn it off for summer and back on for winter. If I was going to bother tearing into the dash as far as this guy does just to switch it manually, I would fix the blend door. A shut off valve does the same thing and much easier to access and install under the hood.
this is quicker than installing a ballvalve and no need to play with coolant. fixing the blend door requires a lot more disassembly. Nothing wrong with different options !
This idea is helpful, but, if you have to do this in a pinch (like 30 mins before go to work on icy rain day), don't do it. There are lots of steps that this video is missing.
.....or you could just go through the glove box and NOT take everything apart. My blend door has been manual for 2 years. Thumb to pry up, finger to switch between ac and heat. Takes 2 seconds
Can you run that by me again. Are you saying you didn't need to remove the airbag or plastic tunnel vent to manually move the level? I hope your right. I was wondering if something like a coat hanger with a hook could move it
This is the mistake of this video. I only figured people wanted to see that after people like you started telling me. Had I known prior I would have shown it. Aint too bad, but you got to flex it a little.
If you hear a clicking that fucker is shot. If your controller is digital a trick is to keep going into diagnostic mode (press FLOOR and OFF at the same time then press AUTOMATIC) it will keep trying to actuate the blend door and it might move.
Veikra mine was a little different. 2004. But, once I got to the part I removed a screw then pried it up and tore the black piece off. Then I pulled the wore towards me and, heat! The video was still a huge help. Thanks for sharing. Some definitely have two airbag screws beneath or behind the glove box.
if there screw underneat then remove glove box and unscrew. simple enough but with cop cars being taken apart often , lots are mising those screws i guess
yes, they is a bolt to remove the part that needs the dash removed to access it. There is, however a shortcut without removing the dash consisting of breaking open the old part and cutting a slit in the new one.
Also works for no A/C troubles ! lol . That's the last v8 full size, body on frame sedan. Id have a caprice like yours if it wasnt from the age making lead time on parts orders a pain
Luckily they don't break too much. You need your own parts collection to keep them going! I would DD a old Crown Vic if i had room. The guy who worked at the police maintenance facility had it right though. "Do you really want one of these cars, they are out idling in this extreme heat all day, all night, that's a lot of hours on the electrical system!"

Good idea on the rubber hose to prevent it moving on its own. In my case the pressure from the actuator was so great it wouldnt move at all once put in place
I just disconnect my battery and it reset
1990 town car. is it the same? F0VY19980A sends a 12v signal to a vacuum something behind it to acuate hot or AC
blend door is in same spot i'd guess. But it wont be an electric otor sitting on it
Im getting barely warm air (bu ac works perfect) is my problem a heater core you think?
Could be. but you have to check this first. Trust me
the best video for this problem
Thank you. It's more of a hack than a repair
I am trying to turn the little white knob but I think it is going to break something. So, I need to take 1 bolt out, pry it up, and then I should be able to turn it?
pause the video at 3:02, you have to get the black plastic piece up enough to slide the metal level under to where you want it, cold or hot.
Is there enough room under the air duck without removing it to move the lever? I need to go from cold to hot so I need to move it to the right.
well you arent gonna see anything of what you are actually doing if you dont remove the duct
@@Nordic_Mechanic Today I was able to look behind the glove box and put a right angle set of pliers on the white piece of plastic on top of the blend value actuator and turn
it from cold to hot. It took a few tries to turn it but I was successful. Its possible to use a small vise grip and lock it onto the top white plastic piece. Then
use it like a handle for the future.
@@n1kkri nice. now you can plan and decide when to actually get the actuator replaced
@@n1kkri Yeah, I did this minus vicegrisp for the remaining 3 years of the car with me. Dunno if next owner fixed it correctly yet.
Thanks for this video!
I replaced mine easy with that minimal space and the right tools. But great vid.
Share your technique. By the views on that video, people would appreciate it
What did you do
The break the bolts that you can't get, break the holes off on the new actautor. Slap it on there with one bolt and you're good to go for another decade or two. I'm just going to replace mine. I'm not going to remove my airbag multiple times in a row for each season.
Yes I know, but this video is the poor man temporary repair. Liking your comment so others can see it
what are those cables going down across to a looks like a computer or some sort? I seen a couple of videos with those cables going to that black box thing. when I took off my air bag its empty. just the mount by itself.
this is the brain of the heater and a/c unit. You probably have a 1999 instead of a 2003+
Veikra I do. thanks
Veikra thanks a lot bud! I did my actuator replacement. when I bought my 99 interceptor it was stuck on AC cold. so it took me about a year to drop the dash and try to remove the actuater but no luck. so I lift the actuater to move lever to heat. great winter. now its hot. so I look up your video and replace actuater dorman brand. plug my actuator back bolt everything up. and its still on hot. any ideas? manual climate. thanks
maybe the real problem was the heater control that wasnt moving the actuator, and not the actuator itself
For heat do I pull it toward me or push it away from me
@@detroit_clips i say so in the video, I dont recall off of my mind which is which
I did it today my heat is working great for the winter thanks for the video
The way I got it now I can go through the glove box to switch it back and forth without removing airbag and duct work
Awesome video! Thanks man...
Glad you liked it!
What about defrosting the windshield? Does that still work when the blend door is bypassed?
this only bypass the temperature, not the positions. Control of the position will remain unaffected
Can you help me my 04 grand marquis does not blow at all the blend door is clicking but no heat or air blows out the vents at all. what could be the problem? compressor comes on and off and the line is cold. but nothing blows out the vents at all.
you fan (blower motor) is probably not spinning
Thanks for the reply. I fixed it the problem was the Blower Motor Resistor. It is located under the hood passenger side just under the two heater core hoes it is the Resistor that powers the blower motor. It's was a B❗⬆#h to replace but I did it. One more thing. I replaced the Blend Door Actuator but it makes a clicking sound just like the old one?
I did the same thing on my 03 grand Marquis after it died in the heat position. Used a piece of hose to hold the lever in the cold position
Jordan Mamrak I thanks
My
I did this to my Mercury yesterday and it worked perfectly..but the switch keeps moving back to the heat mode...do you know what I can do??
the switch in the dash control? unplug the actuator, it wont matter where the switch is
Veikra how do you unplug it?
I’m still having trouble with this...I unplugged the blend door but soon as I start driving the switch moves back to heat on it’s on. It will not stay in ac mode. I’m so frustrated!! Please help!!!!
i just take the bypass the heater hose in the summer and put back on in the winter , 5mins work
should put a valve in then. Messing with fluids everytime isnt for me.
Does this process affect the core over time?
Also about how long is the process
it does not affect the core. It bypasses the blend door only. You should unplug the wiring on the blend door when doing this so it no longer moves. The whole process takes about 10 mins.
Thanks
My 07 crown vic might have this same problem about to check it, cold ac blows but no heat when changed..
highly probable. look at the little level when you move the dial to heat. If it doesnt move you found the problem
My heat won’t come out by the windshield it only comes out of the vents and floor will this fix my issue?
no, this is the temperature control. theres another just like it for the positions of where the air goes out.
@@Nordic_Mechanic do u know where it’s located?
@@jerrybockes4769 Im not sure anymore, but its the easier one. I *think* is was near the gas pedal.
@@Nordic_Mechanic is it the same thing as the blend door kinda u just turn it?
@@jerrybockes4769 yes and the part looks the same
Thankz your video was a big help
It wouldn't matter if you pull the dashboard out or not, that upper piece that's blocking the actuator from coming out is part of the firewall.
I know, but you need to pull a good amount of the dashboard to drop the heater box.
Drill a little hole and put a rod through the hole to the tab then you can just push or pull the rod instead of taking the airbag and vent apart each time
hard to drill a hole in a round bar deep into the dashboard facing away from you
thanks for this tip just great.
Is it this easy on the 97 towncar?
should be. the newer model share the same overall body.
I have a 03 mercury marauder my A/C and heat works but it comes out the top not vents does actuator controls that to
It's your OTHER actuator that it bad then. But lucky you, it's much easier to replacement than this one on your car. Replace it it's about 34$ It's called the Mode Actuator.
Veikra Thank you very much thought I had to take the whole dash down on it
Is this Magnus from fast and loud?
How did you find out?
F0VY19980A is what I'm looking for. If you can help me?
Thank you good bless
Glad to help !
My air just blows at room temperature no cold no heat, could this piece be the problem? I doubt both my ac and heater are bad.
it could be stuck in the middle or a pathway is disconnected and it somehow doesnt pull air through them. Check this blend door first . Its the most common failure
@@Nordic_Mechanic i will, thank you for replying.
Do you have to disconnect the battery??
yes, you have to remove the airbag and it's safer to disconnect the battery prior to doing such
@@Nordic_Mechanic I just figured out a simpler way on my 2004 crown victoria.
Does this work for 92-94 model Vics?
yes
Thanks i will try it but I sure it won’t take me 5min to do it for the first time 😅
Next time, pull the black plastic piece out of the way, spiral a piece of hanger wire around hinge, route it to accessible under dash. And you’ll never have to take it apart again.
But that's cheating ! :p
Alright, hope this is the problem on my vic. Don't look fwd to heater core issue
Can you do this with a 1994 Lincoln Town Car? Thanks.
Yes, I did it today. Almost same lay out. Just a post in way, but it's doable.
@@SpectrumRob What about a 97 Town Car?
Similar but probably a bit different. 1997 was a body style change. Good luck!
All you experts saying to just block the hot water flow as an easier fix need to know that my blend door on 2008 Grand Marquis is stuck in cooling position so I have no heat.
MrJerryjg I'm in same boat with a 2009 GM, it's driving me nuts
Exactly why I do it like this. It work both way and it's faster than installing other stuff. I dont use the car enough to warrant the real fix although I may do it for sake of making a video if this video hits 100k. I have a good shortcut to save a lot of disassembly of dash.
My 03 Marauder had that issue in 05 , 07, 08. Cost me 500.00 per the dealer to replace the control head each time.. Then I heaRD OF A GUY BACK EAST THAT REPLACES SOME FAULTY CIRCUITS in the head and I haven't had the issue since.
Brilliant thanks!
You're welcome!
Will this work on a 2009 crown vic ?
yes, works up to end of production in 2011.
do you have one for a heater core?
no, but it's rather involved let me tell you
Thanks just fix my crown vic

Thanks for skipping the removal of the air bag piece on the dash! I removed the screws and seem to be tearing it apart with no luck,....
That's all there is to it, I can't show what doesnt exist. It's 2 screws and it clips in.
Michael Medeiros. Your comment was really funny and had me rolling ....that shit seems to always happen to me too . The video segments that seem to be unimportant to these people always turn out to be the complicated (what-now) part of the fix . No offense intended ....just funny !
yeah, I try not to but I never had to undo those 2 screws on 4 different cars. Too many people dont put back all the screws on these cars:p
Michael Medeiros in my grand marquis I had the same problem getting the airbag out but I looked underneath the air bag and there’s 2 screws underneath it that needed to be removed as well
Alright I'll try and edit it, lots are missing those screws.
Gracias mil... excelente
De nada :)
That literally took me 20 minutes start to finish.
@@Nordic_Mechanichow. With that duct vent. No way. Took me 1.5 hours to get it out and put it back
thank you for sharing. saved me a ton of time and money. L -o-

This is a good strategy ,but you must remove the glove box to access the two bottom bolts holding in the air bag not mentioned in this video
No such bolts on mine
I got a cheap power inverter and a small floor heater for now 😂
hahaha . seriously trick this trick. You can also replace the actuator by cutting a leg and fishing it through wihtout removing the dash
No focus on the switch on the actuator
darn it
.....or you could just go through the glove box and NOT take everything apart. My blend door has been manual for 2 years. Thumb to pry up, finger to switch between ac and heat. Takes 2 seconds
I tried that but my hands are too freaking big. I'm 6 ft 7. That way is only for midgets
Can you run that by me again. Are you saying you didn't need to remove the airbag or plastic tunnel vent to manually move the level? I hope your right. I was wondering if something like a coat hanger with a hook could move it
how u remove the air bags with no problem
you simply do. nothing fancy. Disconnect battery then the airbag
thanks u
I turned it to cold but no cold air for me. Fml
perhaps ac is dead
@@Nordic_Mechanic no its the compressor canister
@@lucasdunn1776 which is the ac system
Everyone scared to show that ac vent tube coming out
This is the mistake of this video. I only figured people wanted to see that after people like you started telling me. Had I known prior I would have shown it. Aint too bad, but you got to flex it a little.
Thanks bro
Push What Back ?
the little metal lever
I have no heat and I can hear the blend door struggling to open
If you hear a clicking that fucker is shot. If your controller is digital a trick is to keep going into diagnostic mode (press FLOOR and OFF at the same time then press AUTOMATIC) it will keep trying to actuate the blend door and it might move.
Turn up the radio and you won't hear that anymore.
I ment a hole somwhere in the dash
Mine had two screw under too
the 4 cars I've worked on never had those
Veikra mine was a little different.
My mechanic wanted $750 since it would take 5 hours to remove dash...really....
yes, they is a bolt to remove the part that needs the dash removed to access it. There is, however a shortcut without removing the dash consisting of breaking open the old part and cutting a slit in the new one.

Luckily they don't break too much. You need your own parts collection to keep them going! I would DD a old Crown Vic if i had room.
