    Great lesson here! Many folks out there teach the BB box, but without the context or how it works, which are things I *really* appreciate!

    I gave up playing guitar 20 years ago, because no one of my very skilled guitar teachers could explain me the coherences of solo playing very good - watched a few of your videos the last few days and it's a revelation. back on the blues track now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Griff! Cheers from Germany!

    Hi, I've been trying to learn how to play the guitar for 15 years. Sounds crazy but I've learned scales until I'm blue in the face but I've never been able to turn them into music. I've watched hours and hours and hours of videos on you tube and this is the best one I've ever found. You stayed on topic, your explanations are fantastic and you didn't drift into things that I can't understand. I always lose interest in those other videos and I get so frustrated. I'm watching this lesson for the fourth time tonight. NICE JOB and thank you so much.

      Thanks, Doug, I'm so glad to hear this video, and maybe some others, have helped. It's really easy to get overwhelmed and the default response is that somehow more notes must be better. Just work with a small group at a time and focus on making music. If the greats can do it, so can you!

    Thanks Griff for an excellent explanation on a simple but vital element of paying in box 2 minor and major patterns. Recently been breaking down Albert King’s I’ll Play The Blues for you. For anyone wanting to do it start in second pattern bending Perfect 4 to 5! Reinforcing what Griff has said about creativity, just find out how many wonderful sounds Albert King got out of using the house pattern using 3 or 4 notes - fantastic! Simple but very creative and effective. Try it. There is a big difference I believe in using established patterns and scales. The former is for creating licks similar to BB Albert, Stevie etc, the scales provide passing notes, ring downs etc, which are also vital. Thanks again Griff for a great video!

    Very helpful. I learned the 5 Blues scale positions, but it's difficult to remember for each chord. But since I know every note on the fretboard, your house pattern makes so much more sense to me and helps me actually play music rather than scales.

    Thanks, Griff. After several years, I finally get it. Specifically, it was at the point when you explained when the root was on the B string, the 3rd is not in the box until you bend the B string. That alone switched on the light bulb. I haven't had an advance in understanding like that in a while. That was major.

    Top notch instruction, thank you! Something I figured out but have never seen mentioned, if you drop pattern 2 in the minor pent down three frets, to the same position as pattern 1, you're playing the major pent. That makes it so easy to throw in major licks while remaining in pattern 1. Hope that makes sense

    However, the video is blurry and difficult to watch; my guess its a consequence your inaugural use of Facebook live. I appreciate trying new ways to reach viewers & hope your experiment using Facebook live leads to better video definition in time. My comment comes a year after this video was posted so it likely outdated.

    Really cool lesson, thank you very much! The thing I just can't seem to understand is: what does a lick have to contain so that it's playable over the I, IV or V chord, respectively? Is it really just the (minor or major) third which determines whether a lick fits better over the I, IV or V chord or is there more to it? Does a lick necessarily have to end on the root note of the I/IV/V chord?

      I often call it the house pattern. It's the root, 2nd, 4th, and 5th of the scale, plus you can reach down to the 6th. When you bend the 2nd you either make it major (whole step bend) or minor (half step bend.) Search my channel for "house pattern" and you'll find it.

  • @FKtdyvan

    This is confusing to me. I thought that what is referred to as the BB box involves four notes with one of the notes bend up to get the fifth note and that those notes are located in the area of 10th, 11th, and 12th frets. So, we are often told that BB King played mostly his notes over that area of the guitar neck, and that, therefore, he played mostly in the major as opposed to the minor pentatonic blues scale. Is that inaccurate?

    • @bluesguitarunleashed
      @bluesguitarunleashed  6 років тому

      His pattern would change depending on the key that he was in, so you can't really limit it to a single set of frets. In my experience this video represents the pattern BB used the most, where the index finger is on the root, and the bent note on the lower string gives a major or minor 3rd, and the upper string note gives the 6th of the scale. It's not quite a simple as saying he played mostly major or minor because he weaved them back and forth so effortlessly as he needed.
