Great job as usual Brian! These lessons are why I’m an Active Melody member...oh, I love BB too! In my opinion he is probably the most influential guitarist ( and musician) in the blues rock genre ever. This lesson is very well articulated and yes, a lightbulb has been turned on for me! Thanks for this one Brian!
Just heard the BB tutorial. I learned a lot about mixing minor & major scales. Your teaching methods are exceptionally clear. From someone who teaches & played guitar for 35 years.
As a quite good keyboard player, now learning guitar, I found this really helpful, talking about the shapes, and the short phrases, really helps me start to understand BB's style - thanks so much !
You said, "Light Bulb Moment": anything you post for me is a light bulb moment! I'm always grateful for your content and your wealth of knowledge, even at times, theory wise it maybe over me head, I pick up bits and pieces as I go.
Wow! What an absolutely inspirational tutorial! I have been stuck in panic mode and straight to pentatonic box 1 for about 5 years now but have just sat for an hour jamming around with all these shapes and, although I say it myself, my ideas and solos sound so much more interesting now. Thank you so much for showing us how to join those three shapes in such an informative and clear way. My wife even just said it sounds so much better than what I was doing before after just an hour. Brilliant!
Most of us Blues guys are moving toward Jump Blues and Bee Bop. BB swings it, he was one of my favorites. Him and Larry Carlton Thanks for what you do 72 years old and cranking it up Peace Los Angeles
I’ve seen videos on the BB Box before, but this is the best one yet because of the way you blend minor and major with the licks and still keep within the context of the backing track. Makes it much more ‘musical’ and has made me feel more confident to try when improvising myself.
This was an excellent lesson and explained a lot of the nuances of the BBK zone. Thanks Brian. Here is a tiny detail regarding how the BBK zone relates to the CAGED system. When moving to the 8th fret position (minor pentatonic, position 2), and your 3rd finger is on the A (second string,10th fret), you have moved into the D-shape of CAGED. Since this position is minor, you can see the open position D-minor shape in the scale tones.
And I say that we could all bet our guitars , the man wasn't thinking about major ,minor pentatonic scales notes when he was jamming the blues. Only our man Brian is trying to confuse everyone with music theory , hehehe. Knowing scales patterns is very important but don't matter much when you explain BB King licks. Clever work there, Brian.
@@alexgrecu4395 You're definitely on to something there. He knew his minor and major thirds, and his fifths and his sevenths, and of course enjoyed going back to the tonic a lot. But he was probably thinking about notes which sounded good and he could use (whether or not they were part of the scale) as opposed to notes which didn't. There is a lot of chromaticism in his playing too.
One of the best video lesson of yours Brian! Really understand the mechanics of the BB playing at last. I would like hearing intervals too as fret numbers, Im more of an interval guy lol. Thank you for this great lesson.
Thanks Brian. Great fun! So many 'simple" licks. I'll be going over this for a while to pick it all up and then get up to speed. More please! Many thanks.
Awesome lesson, I've been looking for something like this for years. What a difference with just a few well thought out notes. The bends are just perfect, playing this in the next jam night. Thank you.

Hey Brian, Wonderful stuff. Greetings from Dublin - I got to wait until late in the evening 'cos of the time zones for your lessons but man was this one worth it. Love your enthusiasm, you've helped my playing so much. Thanks, Mick
Okay. Major lightbulb moment. Most of the lessons I've watched, I either lose interest, or am just not interested but being a big fan of BB kept me interested in this and in fact, made the most sense. I don't play very good at all, but this one had me playing all the way through which made me feel really good. Played this until my fingers hurt. (I need to learn how to develop a light touch instead of strangling the neck.) Awesome lesson right here. This lesson might make me a subscriber.
An excellent lesson. It clarifies a lot of things for me and I've been looking for just this kind of lesson re: BB. One suggestion for all of your lessons. Is there anyway you can put tags on the video so that we can quickly get to the beginning of discussion on a particular demo? Like chapter or paragraph markers.
I use piece of paper and pencil, write down the time stamp of what I want to localize.. His premium level has looping option to adjust speed and keep playing into a loop until you get it. I plan on joining soon myself,to focus during winter.
I think there literally was a lightbulb turning on above my head during this lesson. I can play minor and major pentatonic decently well but have seriously struggled mixing the two. Can’t wait to play around in BB’s zone, thanks!
Thank you so much. This was so helpful since I LOVE the blues and BB king. It’s so simplistic, but so nuanced at the same time. it was great how you broke it down since I’m good as seeing patterns as well. I actually play with inverted strings like Albert King or Eric Gales, so I need it broken down like this so I can develop my own approach to it 🙏
A good lesson which is a nice refresher for me to see every now and then, to uncomplicate my blues playing which often has too many notes in my improvised phrasing. My "keep it simple, stupid" go-to!
This is a phenomenal lesson, Brian! The way you analyze and make everything approachable is fascinating! I even learned a couple of new words: BB-centric and twiddly stuff! 😉
Brian, did BB play in A or Bb mostly? (Possibly tuned down a semitone?) Also I think one of the many key reasons to your success is that you teach from a point of view through the student's eyes, not a know-it-all guitar teacher and that's a special talent. You've always been gold, pal. Talk by email again soon one day. 😉 J.
Another reason I voted with my wallet to be an Active Melody member! Of all of the online teachers out there, Brian breaks it down to the simplest common denominator. For me, this is similar to learning simple math as a child. The first things we learned were the basic formulas and why it adds up to the correct answer. Just remember: You can't go into the maternity ward at the hospital and ask where the baby guitar players are. Guitar or any other instrument is a LEARNED skill.... Nobody is actually born with it although some are blessed with perfect pitch!
It's one thing to think about these concepts in focused practice, but being able to play these ideas in a blues jam without thinking too much is another skill altogether that I haven't yet found a good tutorial on. I know it will come with time / practice, and it's a struggle until you "get it".
Good stuff, thank you. I hear so much of one of my favorite players in this, Steve Gaines, he must have been a fan and student of the BB school of guitar.
Like the 2nd blues pattern transition to 4th pentatonic pattern. I have been playing around with various transitions between both. Helps to see from respective positions. I have hit it accidentally before and wasn't sure why it worked, just that it did. Like the original approach, too.👍
I'm one of the 60 plus learning guitar again and what gets me is the minor major although I know the shapes can't quite seem to put it together this video may help
This is really cool... I get lost when try to think if I'm playing the minor or major pentatonic, but If I just use my ears it kind of just drives on its own.
its great to copy the great players, but to learn how they do it, and find other ways to improvise is better , you make it your own, the years I have been following this channel that's being the theme of it, but BB simple things like the BB Box could do so much, another player which you did a lesson which I really liked was Warren Haynes maybe another Warren Haynes in the future , great lesson Brian
I’m retiring in three weeks and I’m going to join when I do and would love to see more lessons like this! I started playing with a book called the BB King box method and really got a lot from it all those years ago and loved this video! Do more of these!
Great lesson. If I may make a suggestion. Hill Country Blues/ Cotton Patch Soul lesson Droning & percussive fingerstyle style Similar to RL Burniside or Junior Kimbrough. The type of stuff where the thumb is consistently playing bass rhythm and other fingers are playing melody. Ex)See my jumper Hanging on the Line by RL Burnside
Great video, just found your channel. I have seen a few BB Box videos but yours is the best. You explain it well and don't just copy leads but explain options which makes us think. One video I saw recently that I would like your opinion on is switching between the Major Pentatonic scale while also playing the same position of the Minor Pentatonic, which would be box 5 of the minor. Hope that makes sense. The frets overlay each other and it would be awesome to be fluent in one position and be able to switch back and forth between the two scales in the same hand position..
Great job as usual Brian! These lessons are why I’m an Active Melody member...oh, I love BB too! A wonderful, detailed, brilliantly explained lesson Brian. Thank you so much for your generosity making these lessons.
Just heard the BB tutorial. I learned a lot about mixing minor & major scales. Your teaching methods are exceptionally clear. From someone who teaches & played guitar for 35 years.
Brian that's the best B.B. lesson I've watched. it finally clicked switching from minor to major. That's the sound.
As a quite good keyboard player, now learning guitar, I found this really helpful, talking about the shapes, and the short phrases, really helps me start to understand BB's style - thanks so much !

Awesome lesson! Definitely opened up more for me. Made a quick look and played the position and jammed for over an hour!
This should be standard curriculum for any aspiring blues players. All i know is learned something here....thanks brian
A great lesson I am now out of a rut with my playing.

What a blessing. The 60 second vids are perfect 👌🏽 thanks man!
B.B. King plays guitar the same way he sings, that is so true! He was one of those guitar players you can recognize instantly.

Fantastic. A great way of visualising BB's soloing technique. Will be sitting with this lesson for some close reading. Thanks!
