  • PLEASE CHECK OUT THE LATEST 2020 VERSION OF THIS VIDEO HERE: • Real Digital Watercolo...
    UPDATE 2020: I am no longer using these brushes but have a few favorites you can download for free from Adobe ~ Kyle T Webster Watercolor Brushes - my favorites are: Kyle's Real Watercolor Round Robin (creates wet edges - better than the one I use in this video), Kyle's Real Watercolor 500 Giant (great for soft watercolor backgrounds) and Kyle's Real Watercolor Soft Edger 1 for blending.
    Hi Guys! I'm back with a new video for you. This one was inspired by my recent exploration of the digital watercolor tutorials on UA-cam and I was immediately SO confused and overwhelmed by what people were trying to teach and to me all of them had lost the magic of REAL art!
    So if you haven't already given up hope on trying art in Photoshop check out my video. I make it easy to learn and it's perfect for traditional artists who typically work with pencil and paper or brush and canvas.
    You will need:
    Photoshop
    Drawing Skills (or not - drawing is like a muscle you have to use it to make it stronger - get started and you will only improve).
    Wacom Tablet (any kind) and digital pen (usually comes with the tablet)
    A watercolor brush - UPDATE 2020: I am no longer using these brushes but have a few favorites you can download from Adobe Kyle T Webster Watercolor Brushes - my favorites are: Kyle's Real Watercolor Round Robin, Kyle's Real Watercolor 500 Giant and Kyle's Real Watercolor Soft Edger 1 for blending.
    I hope you enjoy - please let me know if you have any questions. Subscribe to my channel for future videos and please share my video - Cheers!
    ~ Jess ;-)

    Gosh this was so helpful. I’m trying to make an illustration in a watercolor style (I usually do highly-rendered digital) and oh my *god* I didn’t realize I needed to be told “just put colors down, don’t worry about being clean and have fun with it”. Thanks *so* much

    My smudge tool wasn't working as well as yours, so I realized "Finger painting" wasn't selected. That changed everything.

    I have been using photoshop for a few years, and I'm an artist but have never used it for my drawings or paintings, I have been so discouraged with the other videos of how to "act" like an artist by using all the photoshop tricks!! THANK GOD FOR YOU AND YOUR TUTORIAL! I can finally just do art on photoshop with watercolor color techniques that are as natural and close to the real thing, and allows me to be an artist without having to be a photoshop technician! lol. Thank you a million times!!

    I've always been on the traditional side of art, especially watercolor illustrations. But I just bought a pen tablet and the whole digital art world felt so intimidating, the tools, brushes, settings etc! But this is the most sincere and humane digital art tutorial I've seen so far haha. Your voice is so comforting and loved it when you said like "Be messy, be free, and do it like how you would do it, not like how computers would do it". The whole thing seems more familiar already, thank you :)

    Just wanna say thank you. I was having so much trouble blending watercolor together, I almost gave up and decided that Rebelle would be a good choice. Then I watched this. The type of canvas made all the difference when blending, I used to get these oil streaks on the normal surface when trying to blend watercolor but now I use the watercolor surface and it blends with texture and all. Thanks again.

    Bless your heart, this video is super easy and straightforward, and all I needed was a new brush and some guidance. I used to dread having to color b/c as good as I am at drawing, I can't color at all digitally, so now I'm learning to do it. I love the watercolor effect and although all of the other watercolor videos on YT look nice, the effects don't look genuine at all; or if they did, you still had to buy brushes and all sorts of complicated tools and actions :(

    I tell you, even if i'm a noob, I think it's better having as many layers as you can. In this way your draw would be easier to edit. A long time a go I did a drawing where I created a layer for every single line of the lineart i was making. This allowed me to change some lines of it at the end of the work easier and faster than when you have all in one layer, and then i could switch between them to see which one was better

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  5 років тому +13

      I agree sometimes it is good to have lots of layers for certain types of art. I do this for fabric art for example when I want to replicate one element over and over and move them around easily. The disadvantage to many layers is the more layers you add the larger your file size will be. You also have to be very disciplined and label each layer so you don't spend half your time searching for a certain line or element. But if it works for you then that's great - we all have to find what works best for us.

    Having not gotten into digital art for the reasons mentioned (so overwhelming when you watch other tutorials, didn't feel like actual painting, etc), this video was absolutely refreshing and provides my with the inspiration to pursue trying it again. I love traditional watercolor, so the experience will still be a change, but to be able to create a similar effect digitally, and without constantly using a hairdryer to dry the page, is exciting! :D

  • @SaltyMaud
    @SaltyMaud 5 років тому +10

    Effective simple technique. I, being the dreaded _graphical designer_ i am, improved the end result by duplicating the color layer, applying find edges and a few pixels of blur and multiplying that on top of the color layer. Makes more convincing dried outlines to the "watercolor strokes". With that addition and a bit of touch up i am quite happy with the effect.

      Chiaotzu that's my point.. I was being sarcastic. It seems that the creator of this video thinks that graphic designers are not artists. Little did she know, graphic designers study art and practice it as much, or even more than fine art artists or whatever she calls artists.

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  6 років тому +8

      Actually I NEVER once said Graphic Designers were not real artists. I said the videos you find on UA-cam with the computer effects do not feel like real art. I am trying to bridge the gap between traditional art and digital art. People who have been drawing and painting their whole lives very often have a hard time translating that to digital media. If you are going to post negative comments on my videos I will remove them as this was intended to be for people wanting to learn something not for hateful remarks. I am completely self taught on all of the Adobe software and others as well as being a traditional fine artist so you don't have to preach to me about the hours it takes to learn this stuff - because you're looking at it.

    This is awesome!
    Thank you Jess,
    Ik keep returning here to check the steps, So I'll summarize them for my (and maybe other's) sake ;-)
    1- import drawing into PS
    2- copy with lasso (CMD+C)
    3- make new doc: 7x7 inch 300dpi cmyk
    To make watercolor texture paper:
    4- Create new group
    5- Add layer mask
    6- Edit> Fill> Pattern>Artist surfaces>second last>goache light on watercolor
    7- Lighten texture: click on grey box of pattern > CMD+L for Levels, left marker to middle of peak for a little less texture
    8- New layer (multiply mode) > Paste step 2 (CMD+V)
    9- Transform (CMD+T) Press Alt (and with old PS: shift as well) > drag to the preferred dimensions) Enter
    10- Clean up paper colour: CMD+L Left eyedropper, anywhere on the blanc paper. Rename layer
    11- New layer (multiply mode) Rename to 'colour'
    12- Paint with brush Jess 8

Love this. 🥰👊 New sub.
