  • Paul Andersen starts this video with a description of the respiratory surface. He explains how worms, insects, fish and mammals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. He then tours the major organs of the respiratory system; from the pharynx to the trachea, bronchus, bronchiole and alveoli. He also explains how oxygen is carried on the hemoglobin and how carbon dioxide is carried as bicarbonate.

    hehehe! I`m in middle school and my science teacher started with this... and now I`m studying with it for a big science exam tommorow, my teacher said to listen to the systems on Bozenbiology to study, so yeah, this is how I`m studying! And I like it! I enjoy it! So your not the only nerd. ;)

    The hemoglobin and plasma of the blood information helped alot with understanding how gas exchange works within the capillaries of the alveoli. Great video bud! keep it up

    I got through Biology last semester thanks Bozenbiology!
    I am a Junior in college and I always tell my fellow science students about this channel if they get stuck and need a back to the basics refresher! Your students are so very fortunate to have access to these podcasts... Wish I did 15 years ago when I took AP Biology in high school!!

      From my opinion, we don't have any use of nitrogen in our body. So, when we inhale air, its only the oxygen that is absorbed and used by the body. The nitrogen is simply exhaled with the carbon dioxide.

      Different gases have different solubilities. So, maybe the oxygen is more soluble and readily accepted by Red Blood Cells whereas the Nitrogen is not soluble at all in blood. So, they stay in the alveolus itself.

    wait so i'm confused....some people say the diaphragm moves up when contracting and some say it moves down...which one is it? o_O
