[Reupload] Doctor Who's 60th Anniversary was Abysmal

  • I realize I'm late to the party on this one, but I've finally gotten around to covering the 60th Anniversary Specials for Doctor Who. While an anniversary special should celebrate the show, these were not only underwhelming and disappointing, but they ruin the characters, ruin a big moment from Tennant's original run and it doubles down on The Timeless Children, which is infamous for completely destroying The Doctor's entire backstory.

    "You can never have a human villain since that would be portraying a real world group badly"
    The trick, of course, is that the people who advocate this viewpoint tend to view a couple of real world groups (you know who I mean) as genuinely evil in real life, and thus completely OK to malign.

    Which does not even make sense because "gravity" comes from the Latin "gravitās" meaning "weight." And Sir Isaac Newton, being a learned man, would have known Latin and would have either used "gravity" (as he heard it from them) or, as he did in real life, "gravitas". Not a dumb unfounded in language "mavity"...and, also, why would the doctor use the word when he would not have been changed by it considering he lives outtatime (to quote Back to the Future).

    Also, the sonic screwdriver should not be able to work on brick. As shown in the 50th anniversary it would take centuries for them to be able to decode rock.

    There was an entire episode about how the Doctor couldn’t stand still during Matt Smith’s time, when he had to stay on earth with Amy and Rorie to Examine the weird cubes that just sort of appeared. I don’t buy that the Doctor would just retire away somewhere.

    40:49 i remember when the supposed controversy about davros started there were fans who were physically disabled who tweeted how much they enjoyed being able to cosplay davros and how they felt that Davis was trying to erase a well known disabled character for the sake of political correctness. End of the day all characters can and should come in all shapes and sizes and anyone who thinks a minority should be excluded from certain character types needs to understand the difference between fiction and reality
    Moreover Davis brought davros back before in his original updated design and flat out said that there was no reason to change such an iconic design

      @sapare7838 25 днів тому

      I stopped on the 50th too. I actually remember having a long discussion with a friend at the time how doctor who was just wasted potential, its stagnant and can't stick to any real changes.(and I had grown up watching the series with my parents so I would have a "pro" doctor who bias) I had seen better fan spin-off concepts of the same character by then.
      I doubt that exact thought is how many felt, but its interesting to hear that I am not the only one who dropped off around then, and considering where they ended up...
      To be honest, I don't think they can ever really fix it, at best they can get "good enough" to get the mainstream back who just want to see episode of the week drama. But for anyone with an interest in long term storytelling and exploration of what a character like Doctor Who really would be, and could become, it will always be too lazy.
      If you think about it, Doctor who is just a Pokemon or Simpsons for adults.(and that is taking it very generously with what it is now) A world that never really changes, characters that have no arc and world building with no weight. It is crazy to think that My Little Pony(4) ended up having more ambition than Doctor Who when it came to writing a story-throughline.

    I do not get that criticism considering the fact the vast majority of houses in London are that style. All my family in England owns that type of house except my aunt and uncle and they do not live in London (and there house is considered large for England, when it is probably smaller than the average American house).

  • @Cats-TM

    My favourite part about the episode is when they showed off the fact they could film where ever inside compared to the previous one which was _horribly_ designed and only allowed a few filmable angles. But also, I do not really like this Tardis very much because it feels flat, especially when compared to Peter Capaldi's last Tardis (which Chibnal had blown up) which was one of the best.

    They could've made use of Rocket Launcher Wheelchair Lady's association with and knowledge of UNIT by having her instead use their equipment when they're taken out of the picture. A gun, like you said, but she could've also gotten a breaching charge that a military unit like UNIT would probably have on hand if they thought they might need one, so she'd still be how they get through the wall, but in a more logical fashion. That'd show resourcefulness on her part as well as competence and that she pays attention to things not strictly related to her job as a science advisor. Instead, we get the funny wheelchair rockets.

      @partlyawesome Місяць тому

      @@Creetosis/videos Alright, I'm going through the video again to remind myself of the criticisms. One thing that is frustrating for someone who has watched the specials is that your criticisms are linear, in that it doesn't take into account future information. You complain about the happy ending at least twice before reaching the scene where Donna explains why she got rid of the money, which is bad review writing.
      There are moments in the video, like "Why is the doctor talking to the unit girl in the wheelchair?" which have a fairly obvious answer when you've watched the rest of 2005 Doctor Who, or even have knowledge of Classic Who, The people in UNIT are known to be investigating phenomenon or know details which the Doctor bounces off. Tennant when he was 10 was also fairly rambly to randoms all throughout S2 through S4.
      Disabled people in wheelchairs perform all sorts of tasks in society and don't need to be relegated to the back of a truck or an office. It is perfectly understandable for a science/investigator role at UNIT to be on-site if required. The danger that she's in is accepted as part of working at UNIT.
      To complain that the doctor doesn't instantly house invade with the sonic screwdriver is an odd criticism, the motivations for using the screwdriver are regularly established before it's use and it's common for the show to do something like that door scene.
      Complaints about the comedy is very strange too. Is this an Americanism? Sometimes things are a joke and can be laughed at.
      Doctor Who is a famously underfunded show and if you've watched some of the earlier scenes you'll know that what we got in these specials is a step above most of what we've had.
      The force-fields of the sonic screwdriver were set up before they were used in the scene, it's not like the sonic hasn't done some pretty wild stuff beforehand, it's actually one of the better examples of the sonic doing something unbelievable. It opening doors and stuff like that is just taken for wrote but that was just introduced at some point. It's a multi-tool that only exists for the plot.

    • @partlyawesome
      @partlyawesome Місяць тому

      I didn't mean to send that without the rest of my argument. Oh well.
      Do you just hate Rose's actor? Because she's an actor, she doesn't come up with the lines and her performance is perfectly acceptable and in-line with the kind of performances throughout 2005 Who.
      -- Just got to 38ish minutes in and oh, it's a *political* complaint? I'm not sure how much movie stuff you've done (I have mainly enjoyed your video games critique content) but villains from marginalised groups is extremely common in-fact and there is a wealth of analysis from both marginalised and non-marginalised people about how that kind of *exclusive* representation can be a problem. While I think that you could argue that maybe he's being too cautious around the topic, to say it has *no* impact would be media illiteracy.
      -- "Her only character trait is that she is transgender", bearing in mind that she is a minor character in a doctor who episode she's more fleshed out than many characters like say, the thin and fat Anglican marines. Showing real struggles in Doctor Who isn't new either, can a character not be transgender and get transphobic abuse from in-story characters?
      -- The pronouns bit isn't to push a message, it was a gaff, a bit, a little joke! It was meant to be funny and you missed it because... you were mad about them mentioning pronouns, i guess. It's a little silly getting worked up about it when the only people who did get worked up about it are the kind of people you wouldn't want to associate with.
      -- A small correction regarding non-binary, people can be non-binary men and women, it's not a strict and defined term, but that's a minor point and you did admit you don't know about it.
      -- The male-presenting timelord thing I believe is meant to be a joke, it's kind of unclear and fumbled, I'd recommend watching a video by verilybitchy about this topic as I believe you'd find it interesting from a media analysis point of view.
      -- Another small correction "male-presenting" is just a kind of modern-ish way of saying "looks like a man/male", the terminology is confused so I don't blame you for not knowing.
      "A show that is generally more serious like Doctor Who" definitely comes across like someone has not watched the series beforehand, no one can seriously say the show with mannequins coming to life and living fat is "generally more serious", it's camp!
      The Doctor, especially 10 is an emotional and slightly egotistical creature, your framing of him over this video coming into and being forced to interact with his *best friend* is sad and lacking empathy, when he was interacting with Donna before the ship, he was being wilfully ignorant to the possible consequences, bottling up what he was doing to live some of his best moments once again, to have it unleashed in one outburst where he knows what he will do will 100% resign her to her fate. It's emotionally compelling.
      Things like the drive destroying an area to take off and undoing that kind of damage is very Doctor Who, there have been tonnes of examples of similar things with similar endings all throughout 2005, they can and have done it before, it's par for the course.
      Personally I was a fan of Wild Blue Yonder, it has some good themes, actions and resolves some of the timeless child plot and hand-waves it into a "we don't talk about that" kind of territory. The race-swap is nothing to complain about as Doctor Who is known for playing fast and loose with history. And while you might not like it "Mavity" is very clearly a joke.
      Bi-generation is fun, don't you think? It's meant as a way to shed a little bit of continuity as series 14 is a soft-reboot, so it's meant to lead to a Doctor that is fresh and doesn't need to handle some of the more entrenched problems in his psyche. Don't forget that regeneration originally was an ass-pull so the show could continue without the first Doctor.
      The whole doctor age thing I personally think is a little pedantic. He was exaggerating about being a billion, it's just a replacement for "very old". But I think if you don't see the Doctor as a character that is always running, you could watch, oh I don't know, the first four series of 2005 Who that established him as a character that doesn't relax, always having to do something, like he has a case of ADHD, but it's because he can't stop because of the trauma, the same trauma that was established throughout 2005 Who and if I remember correctly playing a huge part of the 50th anniversary. You literally acknowledge it's not a character trait for him to stop and relax! The Tennant Doctor in this case is being *forced* to live out the therapy, that's why he's with Donna's family, to keep him in-line with is *best friend*.
      I don't know, it just feels like most of this video was a vehicle to complain about social issues, but I don't want to think that because I hope that anyone who would go our of their way to make long videos would be engaging honestly. So I do apologise, I do not want to make the accusation.
