I am 66 year old female I have lost 30 lbs on low carb and am maintaining that loss by continuing on low carb. Once a week a have a sweet that I have been wanting. I actually saved a gourmet chocolate chip cookie for five days before I indulged. Did it send me on a sugar binge? The answer is no. I am approaching this as a life style, for the very first time in my life, I consider the health benefit and body size benefits both. I can’t go through my life completely feeling deprived, but now I can control when, where and how much. Freedom to remain slim and healthy!!!!

I love this woman; her calming voice would typically be so soothing, and some might lose interest. However, there's a difference with Dr. Becky, at least from my perspective, and that is she wastes no words. Every word used, every inflection has a purpose, listening is easy, there is no resistance, and as a result, what she says is easily inculcated. Great work, Dr. Becky. I have personally experienced what you say about sugar. One must eliminate them, and in a few days, cravings go away. One more point, even as I have been relatively fit most of my life until I started intermittent fasting and low carbs, I thought of little else but sweets. How liberating it is to be freed of that addiction.

A cheat can definitely get one to creep back into sugar. I always remind myself, once I go back, the weight comes back too. It's a lifetime lifestyle and our bodies weren't designed to live a carb addicted food lifestyle. Remind yourself cancer cells grow because of it, it contributes to heart disease, viruses thrive on it, bacteria lives off of it, it makes us look older (contributes to wrinkles).... just remember all these things and it'll keep you off the sugar addiction life

Thanks so much for your assistance. I am type 2 caused by Agent Orange in Vietnam.
I didn’t know about my problem until the mid 80’s, but didn’t take it seriously until the 90’s, started going to the VA for treatment. A1C is now 7, sometimes higher but have decided on a LOW CARB diet. Carbs are definitely not good for me. My next A1C test will hopefully be much better.
I’m keeping my weight down, which I don’t think has ever been the problem. Normally I’m around 170, 5-8 tall. Recently I’m down around 8 lbs, being more serious about CARBS.

Having done keto for four months, I am wondering about the "cushion" that continues around the pelvic rim and sides. Can you make a video about the areas of fat loss that most people should expect and the time frame to deal with. For me Keto is now a life style choice and currently average between 5 to 10 carbs per day and NO refined carbs in my daily schedule. But this plateau of a cushion is very troubling. Yes, she has a relaxing personality. And the fact she does not have several cameras jumping from side to side (Thomas DeLauer) is so refreshing. She gets top marks. Finally, she is on par with Dr. Jason Fung who I watch and learn from on a regular basis.

Celebration parties a little less. Haven’t been able to crack those, don’t want disappoint or let people down who have spent a lot of time preparing food. it is not a huge problem last year because of COVID. One party and one restaurant visit in 1 1/2 year. But they will be ramping up again so I am wondering how to tackle that in a thoughtful way.

At 1:42 where the rutabaga and potato are compared, the rutabaga wins with 8.6 g of carbohydrates vs 17.5 g for the potato. However the sugar content in the rutabaga is much higher at 4.5 g vs 0.8 g for the potato. I thought that the sugar level and carbohydrate lever would be directly related with each other.

After going through several yo-yo diets (based on calorie deficit and low fats) over the years, as I've aged and slowly put on the pounds, I'd become 60 lbs overweight. I was also becoming pre-diabetic. About 2 and a half months ago, I did some research and discovered that the American Food Pyramid (based on high carbs) is total garbage and that calorie deficit diets don't work, for the reasons that you listed, mostly that they slow your metabolism, and when you stop the calorie deficit diets, your weight shoots back up. Then, it's even harder to drop the weight the next time. So, 2.5 months ago, I went low-carb, then Keto, with intermittent and multi-day fasting. This has been a total game-changer for me!!! So far, I've lost 40 pounds, on my way to losing a total of 60. I love keto-level carb intake (I shoot for < 20g each day, with absolutely no sugar or artificial sweeteners or starchy veggies (only good leafy greens, which I love, from the produce section). Luckily, I've been drinking unsweetened coffee and tea for years, and have never been much of a breakfast eater nor much of sweets eater), with an 18/6 daily eating schedule and periodic multi-day fasts (I'm currently about to end a 72-hr fast (black coffee, green tea, and water only). Fasting, coupled with a really low carb diet, has been utterly amazing for me. I'm surprised at how easy it is to do multi-day fasts. Even during the first 24 hours of a fast, I'm not very hungry, since my glucose level is already low (and ketones high) at the beginning of the fast; after, 24 hours, the ghrelin (sp ?) is so suppressed that I'm not hungry at all. I can even cook meals for my wife (foods that I can eat on my diet), yet there's virtually no temptation to take a bite. I loved your discussion on "Interested vs. Committed." I'm definitely committed, and the weight loss and healthier feelings have been phenomenal for me. This is not just a multi-month diet for me; it's a lifestyle change, and I couldn't be happier! I'm convinced that a low-carb diet needs to be the basis of a healthy lifestyle, on so many levels! High carb diets are killing too many Americans!

Hi Dr Becky, can you enlighten me please. I'm not overweight but have been on Keto for 6 months just to eat differently. I was a vegetarian for 20 years, only eating healthy natural foods. My biggest downfall was my homemade bread, only 1 piece for breakfast but I worked out the carbs. To my horror it was 29 per slice, my question - one of the bread recipes uses 260gms Vital Wheat Gluten with 240gms Almond flour. I only occasionally have 1 slice with my OMD. There seems to be conflicting views, so can you let me know your thoughts. Cheers Rosemary Perth Western Australia (70 yrs)

Dr beckey, I enjoy your u tubes. Also wanted to add when most talk about low carbs, they speak of salads and inside I am going this is what the naysayers see and maybe turned off. What about showing a plate asparagus with Brussels sprouts and or kale or cabbage or greens with okra. I like to stir fry my okra in light olive oil. Green beans. I like the green spring mixed salad by the way. And etc. most naysayers think low carb or keto eaters eat only salad/lettuce. I named the vegetables I eat and like. There are mirrored more vegs to choose from. Just sayings. Smiles.

I also lost 40 pounds in the first 2 months and nothing for the next 8 although I have little left to lose. Because I lost so fast is why I still have loose skin. Also, I lost muscle mass and am weaker than I was a year ago when I started keto. And although I initially was able to get off my 4 high BP meds I've had to return to using one of them. Overall though I'm happy with keto & will maintain the lifestyle.

I do not eat beef, pork, or lamb. I do eat poultry and seafood as well as nuts. I eat quinoa, which has carbs but is high in protein. I add flax seed to Greek yogurt and fruit. I eat lots of salads and generally have salmon or chicken with them. Instead of potatoes at supper I have two veggies. I have homemade soups. I substitute ground beef for ground turkey. This is how I keep my weight down since I’m unable to eat meat.

But it is more complex than even the Dr omits to, my mom is 91 loves sweets and has ate them her entire life. Has never had a weight problem, as a matter of fact never has weight more than 120 lbs except when she was pregnant, 5 times. Has no diabetes, she does have high cholesterol a little dementia, who doesn't at that age. She has a cousin that is 97 has smoked her entire life, and is in excellent shape. I'm not promoting doing this I'm just saying there is a lot about the human body we still don't understand !

High fat diets cannot be undertaken by people with medical conditions like pancreatic disease as fats are hard to digest and eating them causes painful pancreatic flare-ups, which can be life threatening. So, if you have this problem, eat as little fat as possible.

@@rebeccasmith8567 wow. Someone believes too much internet 'information'. I can't even imagine someone who cares for their livestock would throw dead animals to their pigs (how did their other animals die??). I guess if the poor things don't have enough to eat they'll eat anything - as do people - and most animals - in that situation. If you are basing your information on what you actually witnessed, sadly these 'farmers' care little for their livestock and have poor husbandry skills - and you're right, I'd never eat something from their 'farm' either - pigs, or otherwise. What you explained is quite disgusting and inhumane - not what most farmers do. Good farmers know taking care of their animals is the only way they will be successful.
