Many have complained about the Milwaukee blade motor's plastic housing -the black bulge to which the blade connects. They say that when you hit a hard object, the housing breaks off and can not be repaired. Is the EGO blade motor housing made of plastic or metal?

Appreciate the thorough review! I was looking to get the Ego until I heard the drive squeal on multiple review videos. It's louder than the blades! Sounds like a kids toy! Ego build quality looks good. Power specs sound good. Ego always seems to gets it to the 1 yard line then fumbles the ball. The drive squeal is a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the video and keep up the great content!

@@515Mike - I’ve had an EGO for 4 years now. I think you’re being short sighted. Mine performs every bit as good as my previous gas powered mover. Not only is it might quieter, but you don’t have to deal with gas, spark plugs, and it folds up to a compact footprint. I’ve never experienced any “squeal” with the assist drive and I use it frequently. Try talking to people who actually own an EGO vs making a decision based on a couple of videos you watched. I’ve been nothing but extremely satisfied with mine.

I was on the fence to go into a battery lawnmower, I’m in the mid 40’s and my13yr push 140cc Troy-built was giving me issues, which could probably resolve if I repaired. After watching tons and tons of a of videos old and recent of ego, Ryobi, and Milwaukee, decided to buy the M18 one. I just picked up today and used for the first time. I live in FL which St. Augustine grass is very thick, I very picky and maintain my lawn at the time, but this time I had way overgrown grass, like 3-4 week, and that in FL during the summer is a pain to cut. Approximately 6k-7k square feet. Man let me tell you, where my old mover kept bugging down in a situation like this, this M18 beast didn’t skip a bit. It never stopped, bugged down, nothing. I always mulch, so I did with this one. Settings: height 3”, self-propelled speed 3, always turbo mode, and mulching. Did all my lawn and still had 2 bars left of battery. I’m far impressed with this beast.
I made the mistake to cut my lawn around 1pm FL time, where is it hot as heck. Never saw any overheating on the machine, batteries or any issues because of that. Also as you said, never had an issue with looking at the battery gauge, very bright and easy to read.
Observation: that I have seen on this video and others the m18 machine mulching plug leaking, I didn’t experience this. Never had leaks and the machine performed like a champ. Grass clippings are supper fine and again was mulching and cutting and very high and overgrown grass, the backyard most of all was cutting way more than 6”, with no need to overpass.
I was also thinking about the Ego LM2206SP, which you have on the video, since it has good power and it's aluminum deck, but Jesus, that high pitch from the self prop, you can even hear that all the time more than the actual blades cutting, very uncomfortable. I looked at LM2156SP or 2135, to light, tested them at store, seems to light in the front, and the all plastic doesn't bring confidence IMO. On the M18, you almost don't hear the self prop at all. Going backwards, wheels don't get stock, and you don't hear the self prop motor, it moves freely if you don't use self prop. The machine is heavy, like a gas one. For the deck, as long as you clean the deck every time, just with a towel and use a blower, it should last a very, very long time.
Best of all, the storage, take out batteries, put it upright position and that's it. No more dealing with gas, fumes, gas smell or leaks in the garage, oil, etc. For me, this was more about convenience and get to cut fast and do it faster without struggles. A convenience you will get with any electric mower.
M18 is not cheap, that's true, same at the ago, and maybe for someone that cuts their lawn and maintains it every week or so, I'll say this could be overkill, but if you skip a couple of weeks, be certain the M18 is a beast, something else and for someone on the M18 platform already, this will be a no-brainer just because of the batteries. My neighbors both have Toro and Honda, and their machine bug down and struggle while cutting grass the way I did today.
I still need to test when is darker, to test while adding lights, and see how much battery will last with that.
Finally, before someone else comments, I'm not a fanboy, this is actually my second Milwaukee tool. I have a very old first gen M12 1/2 stubby, and a Kobalt XTR Impact Driver, that's as much as power tools I have.
My trimmer, blower, chainsaw are still gas, still using 13yr Ryobi expand it system. I have plans to change those to battery soon, and probably will go with M18, for convenience.
From initial experience, on the M18 machine I’m blown away, note I didn't have any other electric mower before, I just wanted something that could perform or be one of the best. The m18 is a beast of a lawnmower.
This and your videos were one of the few that helped me with my decision. Thanks and Great video.

Appreciate your content. Simple, fair head to head comparison with very little bias.
I have extensive experience with both Ego and Milwaukee ope having run both commercially. For a home owner I would recommend both. For commercial users I would lean heavily towards The Milwaukee system due to battery durability and tool weight with larger batteries.
I stayed a way from Ego mowers due to the plastic construction and dual blades but have probably thousands of hours on their other tools......introduced me to battery ope tools. Their batteries really are their weak point commercially with most failing within two years plus they are heavy.
The Milwaukee mowers weak spots are poor rear flap design, less than ideal weight balance when bagging and the lack of a true high lift blade. I haven't experienced the mulch plug issue. Big plus of the mower is speed....everywhere.
    Thanks for the content.

  • @SuperTA329
    @SuperTA329 7 місяців тому +5

Outstanding and very detailed review. Having the Milwaukee myself i agree to all your points. I had a friend on IG from the UK send me an upgraded mulch plug which works much better. My guess is they are aware of the leak issue but not available in the US which doesnt make sense. I dont mulch much so not a super big deal but unexceptable for a mower that expensive. The one thing i absolutely like the best is how smooth the drive system is. Variable speed control allows you to feather the speed no matter the speed settimg exactly like a Honda HRX. Silky smooth. The Ego looks very solid. My one wish for milwaukee is to have a dual blade vs. single. Thanks for sharing this video as i could only imagine the time and effort it took to make. 💯👍

M18 ecosystem, lower/less annoying propel whine, free moving wheels when unpropelled, different power modes, and smaller batteries is why I chose the milwaukee mower for my 1/2~ acre yard. If you need big ego batteries for the riding mowers, blowers, chainsaws, inverters, or not in the milwaukee 18v/makita 18v/40v line, then an OPE focused brand would be a good choice for a lot of homeowners. I only need four 8 ah batteries to trim and mow my whole yard. I don't want 7.5ah+ 56v batteries sitting for 6~ months of the year. The amount of use from each m18 battery compared to the 4x~ a month used 56v/60v batteries for a small home owner should be greatly considered.
Though I will say to wait for a gen 2 milwaukee mower if you are not in the ecosystem. Great video TME!

The so called engaging of the motors on Ego mowers is a safety feature to stop the mower from rolling backward on hills when self propelled drive is stopped. Honda ICE self propelled mowers also have this same feature. It is easily defeated as you said by pushing forward a bit. When using the mower on level ground simply disengage the self propelled drive a bit early and allow the mower to coast slightly before making a turn or change in direction and this feature will never engage. It only takes a little while if use to get the hang of. I used Honda’s for years and was well aware of this and when I switched to Ego 5 years ago I was surprised it too had the feature. It can be a pain if you only have a level lawn but if you have any steep inclines you will very much appreciate it. I’m sure they include it to avoid liability though.

    • @TechMadeEzy

    • @jezza6575
      @jezza6575 7 місяців тому

@@TechMadeEzy Perhaps it doesn’t happen every time because you aren’t self aware when using the mower that it needs to travel forward a bit to disengage the feature? Not sure about when not using self propelled as that’s interesting. I can tell you though that mine never does this unless I stop in a tight turn and have no room to roll forward. It would be nice if there was a defeat for us flatlanders! Have you tried Ego customer service? They’ve been helpful to me in the past.

Excellent review. Converted to Ego blower, edger, trimmer, hedger recently after my gas powered trimmer died. Very pleased with the transition and now closely following their mower reviews. I wonder how these hold up - what's the oldest one out there? Paid $219 for my Craftsman in 2002 and it still cranks on the first pull. Hard to come to grips with a thousand more for something that's guaranteed for 5 years. Mower aside, I'd expect the battery to not last (with any reasonable endurance) longer than that. For what it costs to replace the battery I could buy TWO current-model Craftsman mowers.

This is the most expensive Ego model. You can upgrade to lower priced models for much less. My mower was only $450 but it's not self propelled and came with 5ah battery. All of Egos current model lawn mowers come with at least a 6ah battery. They're all guaranteed for 5 years. Mine is 8 years old.
I've seen mowers go on sale for $649 with 7.5ah batteries and self propelled. Also if your blower tool has a battery, that can be used as a spare for the mower. Any battery can be used but I can say the 2.5ah battery just doesn't have enough power for the mower.

Curious if you will be testing out the Ego commercial line mower? Would be interesting to do a side-by-side comparison of the consumer versus commercial Ego and any differences in the app unlocking additional features. I've had ego lawn mowers in the past and currently have the Milwaukee. Both build qualities are a little cheap IMO. I'm looking for higher end commercial grade even though Milwaukee does a very good job it could be better. The super high turbo mode of the ego to suck up the leaves is a nice feature as I still cannot get the electric lawn mowers to have the suction of the Honda gas power. Have to keep the Honda around just for the fall leaf cleanup.

Milwaukee wheels are VERY good. Even if it is a VERY heavy mower, it is relatively easy to push it. Bearing + large wheels size. I use self propel only on slopes or to accelerate the mower. Once at speed, I do not use it anymore. If the EGO is not free-wheeling backward, even only 30% of the time, THAT is a deal breaker to me.

When I first saw the video length I was thinking I can't possibly watch a lawn mower head-to-head that is as long as a movie. Well, I did. Good job! I was thinking how nice it would be to have a single ecosystem for tool batteries. However I now think the dividing line really is the physical battery size. I could get the Milwaukee mower, but those dual 12.0Ah batteries are too large for most of the tools in the Milwaukee M18 lineup. So I am fine with having large 56V EGO batteries for outdoor power equipment and smaller Milwaukee M18 for hand tools. (Their larger capacity M12 batteries are basically the physical size of the M18 batteries, so I don't really see the point of their M12 line and it complicates their ecosystem.) So that is two battery chargers in the garage and that is perfectly fine. Well, except that my Propella eBike has its own cylinder style lithium battery and charger. So three in all. That may be one too many.

I just got the lm2156sp. 10 amph battery and a “free” 5 amph
I like it. Great cut quality
Rear wheel drive seems stupid though. Years of lifting the front up to turn.
I haven’t timed it but the 700watt charger seems to charge the batteries fast
Just went all in on ego. Mower, chainsaw, blower. Free battery deals
Can’t attest to durability but out of the gate I’m impressed
Have a fuel Milwaukee blower to compare with. The EGO is much better. (Would like to say blows it away, but that’s too corny)
I just don’t understand why they would make these mowers rear wheel drive. The ergonomics of front drive mowers just makes sense. Rear wheel drive is annoying. I’m a recent adopter and have had to remow a few spots where the front lifts on a slope. I’m just saying putting the drive up front should not be an issue with electric
But on the whole I like it

@@TechMadeEzy its the way they've built them all. there are switches in the handles to detect that you've extended them and the wiring is internal, which is great in concept, but they've had issues with the switches failing or wires getting pinched and the mower won't run. the external wires and no switches on the other brands seems to work fine. I haven't tried my Makita mower to see if it can start while folded, which is what Ego is trying to prevent.

Milwaukee exhaust cover does not close air tight because you may not want to "side discharge". If you do not put the mulching plug, or the side discharge, it will simply discharge to the back. Which I actually prefer to the side discharge. The gap is "By Design". Like a Honda mower. I use the side discharge only when it rains, or the grass is VERY high. In the end, "grass leakage" is absolutely unimportant. My recommendation to everyone ... Don't be cheap, buy a secondary battery, and be in turbo mode all of the time. I would use "Auto" mode only with the side discharge., Milwaukee's stopping delay is to allow the deck to fully empty so that when you restart, it is not gonna jam. Or. To avoid patch of un-mulch grass. After 3 years, my Milwaukee bag needs repair. Another of those things I never experience in decades with Honda.

Nowadays, the vast majority of legit battery powered lawn mowers have enough runtime to mow the size yard that is “push mower size”. So I’m not too concerned with battery life any more.
For me, I want to make sure the lawn mower will last, that it has enough power, and that the self-propel is smooth and allows easy pushing forward and backward.
My thoughts based on these mowers and the review:
    1. Torque: I think the Milwaukee was underrated on this. It is by far the strongest battery powered mower, and stronger than the vast majority of gas powered mowers. I don’t care what Ego “says” its torque rating is, it is NOT stronger than the Milwaukee, as demonstrated by other tests and THIS test. The Milwaukee started off every time and NEVER bogged; the Ego bogged several times, actually shutting off, and had to be tilted back to start. Case closed.
    2. Self propel: The Ego drive is notoriously “snatchy” when first engaged. It cannot be “feathered” on initial start; it is either “on” or “off”. This is bad. It jerks harshly when starting, and tears up grass. It is not easy to turn and engage. It cannot be slowed easily and intuitively when mowing. It is LOUD and sounds like my daughter’s toy Barbie Jeep.
The Milwaukee, however, has a feature that should have been highlighted during the review. It is the MAIN reason I would choose the Milwaukee over the Ego. You set the max speed dial to the fastest you want to walk. The handlebar mounted “thumb/wrist” paddles then let you feather the speed on start, or whenever you would like to slow down. It is continuously variable from 0 to the max speed you dial up. It allows effortless and intuitive speed changes when starting, making turns, going around trees, hitting high grass, etc…. It can be used like I use my gas powered Honda lawn mower. Milwaukee has accomplished with direct electric control what Honda and Toro achieve with mechanical belt slip systems. It works great, and is the #1 reason to choose the Milwaukee over the Ego. The Milwaukee also allows effortless pushing, forward and backwards. This is required when getting into corners and around obstacles. I will not buy any mower that locks the rear wheels when trying to backup.
If Ego ever gives us an intuitive way to change drive speed, and a way to feather the speed on takeoff or when making turns, I will consider it; if they fix the drive noise and locking on reverse, I will consider it harder.
For now, the Milwaukee has the key features that are most important (to me). More demonstrated power, adequate runtime, great cut with only one blade to sharpen, and smooth, intuitive drive with effortless speed change and no locking up when pulling reverse.
Also - a steel deck is inherently stronger and more resistant to cracking; it can also be repaired by simple welding.

Milwaukee cut height adjustment will fail if it "hits" anything. Cedars, fence, or whatever. Then you cut a notch or two lower and notice it only minutes later. I HATE single lever. No professionals like it.
