  • Before the crucial final 4 fixtures which could massively shape the future of NUFC, we reflect back on whether the fact we are in pole position to make the top 6, after this season of all seasons, is Eddie Howe's finest achievement to date.
Si is joined by Stephen and Stu to draw the comparisons to last season and discuss whether with all the adversity we have had to deal with in 2023-24, it's actually been as good as, if not better than the previous season.
We also look ahead on what the implications of where we finish might be on our two shining stars and if there is a chance we might lose one or both of Bruno and Isak?!

With all the injuries any place in Europe is a tremendous achievement and we should be praising Eddie and the players for a fantastic effort

Anything above 10th is outstanding this season, especially on how teams below have progressed and taking points off all teams.

Goals conceded- pope, botman, tripps. Rest of the team have hardly had a sub to rest them with for 70% of the season. We've had 2 cup runs, a fair showing in the hardest champions lge group, and 6th would top off an amazing result for Eddie and the lads. No way would i let Eddie go.

8th was my prediction at start of the year without knowing about Tonali, no Jan Transfer window and injuries. Two cup quarter finals, respectable Champions League in the toughest group by far, beating Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Spurs then getting any sort of European football would be an incredible achievement. We also got a lot of games into the younger players which will help us next season. a strange season but one we should celebrate if we secure European football.

Great season. Eddie Howe has done remarkably well.

Escaping relegation battle with ease, then top half finishes in back to back seasons? I'd say that's progress, tbh could've had back to back UCL too if this season wasn't so crazy with injuries. Either way I'm happy with the progress on and off the pitch too!

Eddie Howe didn't get enough love & credit for excellent job he is doin at NUFC. Saved us from relegation, guide us to Champions League & this season so many unlucky, difficult cup draws, still remain competitive at Top 7 in league despite huge injury list & suspension. At one point there r 14 players out injured

We are either really good or really bad this season. Next season will be interesting, we can’t be getting smashed by the likes of Luton, Forest, Bournemouth, Everton, and getting outplayed by Blackburn etc. Must fix the away form.

My issue with Bruno being sold is that since he has come in to the club, and of all the games he has missed, can anyone remember, other than the 3-0 away to Utd in the cup earlier in the season, how many games we have won? I honestly cannot remember a single one. We are soo reliant on Bruno, it's actually quite scary. For me, we cannot afford to sell him.

Can’t just compare now to last season, look at last 3, 4, 10 seasons, tragic times. Last year was an incredible miracle but Eddie just getting started with this club. 6th will be class.

6th would be an amazing finish. The injuries were unprecedented and yet we still beat PSG, City, Arsenal, Villa, Spurs, Man U, and Sunderland. We were robbed in the Champions League. Any European spot would be great, all things considered.

This season will be remembered as ‘the one with all the injuries’. It has defined our season. The defining meme of the whole premier league has been inconsistency but only Newcastle have had a decent excuse. Injuries are a compound problem that only great strength in depth can ameliorate.

Yes 6th would be great but we aren’t in pole position. Man U have more home games and a point advantage.

About midway through the season things did look pretty dire tbh. Thats why most fans were very upset for a while.
We had hall looking sub par, the defense in shambles, tonali out for a year, barnes out without even really playing, howes tactics starting to fail, record breaking injuries, our best players seemingly getting ready to leave, we got knocked out of all competitions, and new ffp rules targeting us.
Just about everything that could go wrong went wrong. Luckily though a lot of that has resolved well and were feeling hopeful again that it was just a rough patch and not a fact about our future.

  • @happinesstan
    @happinesstan Місяць тому +1

Are you expecting progress, with our injury list? I'd say we've done a great job at treading water, while the sharks circled. I'd say Villa have progressed, and Liverpool have returned to the mrean of getting all the time needed to get the goal.

Great video lads, IMO I think it would be great to start Europe in the conference to get the experience, knowledge and skills then move up - No-one jumps straight into the premier league they get promoted, they fall, they win its all part of learning.

It's been a terrific season under adversity, imo we are definitely in a champions league place again withstanding worst injuries in our Premiership history and beyond, and we would have qualified in our group in the champions league, young Miley literally had to play four months straight, who could ever have predicted that, that's just one for instance.
Eddie is a class act on and off the pitch HWTL.

The question I have is whenever we lose, we always lose after playing garbage….. we never put in a good game and get beat, in fact we’ve not drawn many either, that suggests we either turn up or we don’t 🤔

Yeah, it absolutely would represent progress, considering the additional strain of the Champions League games. We're victims of our own success in a number of ways. We got into the CL unexpectedly, and we've made a good fist of most of the competitions. Our weakness is still the squad depth, as we're still relying on players who are no longer up to it like Dummett and Ritchie when the injuries start to pile up.

Couldn’t disagree more with the majority of comments on Bruno, especially Stephen’s. I can only think it comes from a place of not appreciating both his importance to the team and the difficultly of replacing him.
I could write a novel of my opinions on it but to focus on a key point, Bruno IS a £100m player in today’s market. We didn’t pay £100m for him. If we get £100m for him (not all of which will be bookable for PSR purposes), we then need to find a £100m player in his position who doesn’t cost £100m.
It could take 2,3,4 or more attempts at that in the £30-40m range to do that. And that’s not really placing any value on his personality and mentality that would be very hard to find again to go along with getting another bargain player.
Like I said, I could go on for days but people casually thinking we can cash in on Bruno and just buy another one don’t understand that it isn’t that easy and that he’s the heartbeat and tone-setter of our team.

The elite manager argument is blah
Any manager with multiple seasons in the top league in Europe is elite.
When people say Elite they're thinking Pep Klopp Mourinho Ancelotti......and that's it
Eddie isn't given that kind of standing by anyone in the media.
Bit for me it's no different to the is newcastle a big club argument....pointless

It's really annoying to hear all these players labelled as having "injury problems" when nobody mentions the fact they've all had to play a hell of a lot more football then they would normally have had too due to the rules of added on minutes at the end of halves, champions league and the fact that a handful of players got injured early on the season and players like isak have had to play every minute of every game, with all them taken into consideration players are bound to get more injuries than normal so I think it's very unfair to give players the label of being injury prone without having a full season where we can rotate properly and give players the rest they need to prevent injuries before they happen

  • @davidhenton8364

I know football is nothing without the fans and it is 'our' club but it really does still sound strange when people say things like 'we need to reinvest our 100 million' as though they actually believe the money is theirs and thinking 'what should I spend it on' lol

Why doesn't Si rate Lewis Miley? Pulled a face when he was mentioned then didn't name him in the young players who came in & did a good job. Love Si usually but I'm sorry that's a bit off imo. Miley has been sensational coming on this season. At 17 to play the way he has on the games he has is something we should be proud of.

The dismissal of anyone who’s criticised Howe is a little annoying. Also the assumption that a league position and over expectation as the reason for criticism.
As Ord pointed out, whilst there were freak injuries, decisions made, putting players at risk, further impacted the squad causing the crisis.
Some very poor performances this season and even more disappointing squad management, very reactive subs etc rather than proactive.
The main question that still needs answering is that - can Howe’s philosophy and intensity work playing twice a week? Regardless of how much you personally rate Howe - that big, important question has not been answered yet

Overall 6th would be brilliant but we can’t just ignore the glaring errors made this season.
Overall for me it’s been really frustrating, not the league position….
In my opinion we have some absolutely outstanding players who have continually papered over the cracks.
